THE TWO MARATHONERS Part 2
BACKGROUND
In 1992, when I was but a 3 year old Christian, the Lord stopped me as I was nearing the end of reading the Bible right through – at Revelation 12:11 to be precise.
“They overcame him (meaning satan) by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death.”
As clear as you are reading this, He explained basically what the verse meant, and told me to base my life’s work for Him upon it.
Now, for a relatively new Christian, this came as a bit of a surprise! However, I was prepared to give it a go. So the next day, I can still clearly remember sitting on the couch in our lounge, wondering what to do and where to start.
While sitting there, the Lord gave me this allegory of ‘The Two Marathoners.’ I hurriedly wrote it down, not wanting to forget, fully understanding my notoriously poor memory. The following day He gave me the interpretation. Of course, it took a couple of weeks to flesh out the outline and make the grammar acceptable to you, the reader.
The allegory was given in three parts, relating both to the three parts of the key verse and of our walk with Jesus. Over the next 18 months the three-part ‘Walking With Jesus’ course evolved. One part of the allegory was included with each part of the course. However, it wasn’t until I had just about completed writing the course, or more correctly, holding the pen while the Holy Spirit wrote it, that I realised that the allegory lined up with the course perfectly. It had to be God, for I had no idea of what was to come when I was first given it.
The 30-hour ‘Walking With Jesus’ course, consisting of 3 booklets and 18 hours of tapes, has been used by over 10,000 people over the past 8 years or so. Many people have found it helpful to a better understanding their walk with Jesus while others have found the Lord for the first time through it.
I trust this story will inspire you too, to find or deepen your walk with Jesus.
THE TWO MARATHONERS
Note: The gaps between the brackets ( 1) are there for you to write in the underlying ‘spiritual’ meanings of the CAPITALISED words that proceed them, if you print this. The letters and numbers in Italics refer you to the answers that are found, along with the interpretation, at the end of each of the 3 parts. The first two are given for free, so you can get the idea. Have fun – and get the Lord’s message too!
Part 3: The Race ( c)
Finally, the big RM DAY ( 15) arrived. Roger Runner turned up in good time for the race, went through his well practised, precautionary STRETCHING ROUTINE ( 50) and had a gentle warm up. He felt just great - rearing to go! He looked round for his old COUCH POTATO ( 10) mate, Jeremy Jogger, but he was nowhere to be seen. Ten minutes to go to the start. Still no sign of Jeremy. Five minutes. Then two minutes. Suddenly, out of the corner of his eye he saw his old friend Jeremy, pushing his way towards him, through the throng. Jeremy looked terrible, he looked really terrible! He had arrived late, and had to run the 2 KILOMETRES ( 6) from where he was able to find a park for his car to get to the starting line. He was flushed and already puffing heavily. His couch potato mystical middle area FLAB ( 13) was bursting out over the top of his shorts. He just looked so out of place amongst the mass of well prepared, eager RUNNERS. ( 2) While he was still trying to force his way through the crowd towards Roger, the starters pistol fired. With a loud shout the mass surged forward, knocking Jeremy off his feet as he struggled against the flow, all as one in their single minded determination to achieve the GOAL ( 34) that they had worked towards for so long. As Roger surged forward with the others, he could hear Jeremy’s rapidly fading, plaintive cry, “Roger, wait for me, wait for me!”
Rogers mentor, MONTY MARATHONER ( 43) looked on sadly but silently. It was too late to do anything for Jeremy now. Without doing the TRAINING ( 24) it was impossible to complete the course. There was nothing that anyone could do for JEREMY JOGGER. ( 17) Jeremy cried like a baby as he was pushed and shoved to one side by the thousands of runners who passed him by. He was led away, a BROKEN ( 60) man, by the race officials. His race was over before it had even begun.
ROGER RUNNER ( 35) meanwhile, was out on the course. The race seemed easy after the TRAINING. ( 24) Now nearly to halfway – no problems. Then loomed up, as expected, the MOUNTAIN. ( 48) Roger was prepared for this challenge. The going started to get a bit tougher as he climbed higher and higher but, just when he needed some encouragement, he saw the stone marking the halfway point of the race. He looked ahead and could see the road disappearing over the top of the mountain. This spurred him on, up, over the top and down the other side. What a tremendous feeling! The mountain conquered. “It will be easier now,” Roger thought, with the hint of a smile. A drink station – a welcome replacement of FLUIDS ( 61) lost on the tough mountain climb.
Suddenly, unexpectedly, a small INCLINE ( 62) makes its presence felt under Roger’s pounding feet. It doesn’t feel that steep but it seems to go on forever. The muscles in each leg begin to hurt and hurt badly. How could such a LITTLE HILL ( 62) hurt so much. Roger looked up in despair. It was then that he saw MONTY MARATHONER ( 43) standing on the side of the road, encouraging him onwards. Over the HILL. ( 62) The 30km sign appears – only 12 to go. Then 32km – only 10 left now!
At that moment Roger’s body really starts screaming! “I can’t go on,” he thought in despair. “I can’t take any more!” But through the pain he heard his friend Monty shouting out to him, “Remember what the book says. Remember what I have taught you.” Roger remembered. He had hit ‘THE WALL’. ( 63) The time in every marathon when the body’s metabolism changes from burning BLOOD SUGARS
( 64) to burning BODY FAT. ( 65) It was painful, unbelievably painful. It was so hard, so very hard to keep on going, but Roger KNEW ( 11) that if he did carry on, did run through it, everything would come right. Besides, he still had Monty’s words of encouragement ringing in his ears. “Have faith in the BOOK, ( 40) have faith in ME, ( 43) Roger.” He repeated these over and over to himself as he ran through the searing pain.
Then he looked up again – the 35km marker. Only 7 to go! He was starting to feel a bit better too. “Look ahead to the end of the race Roger,” he told himself. “All that the book and Monty have said is proving to be right.” Thirty-six kilometres, 37, 38 – 90% done – 9 steps taken out of every 10. He glanced to the side of the road and there again was MONTY ( 43) smiling and encouraging him on to even more effort. “Not far to go now,” Roger said to himself, knowing that the strain was showing on his face and in his slightly stooped body. Thirty-nine kilometres, forty. “I’m going to make it! I’m going to make it!” A new release of energy, his stride lengthens, his body straightens. He glances sideways and sees Monty there, running with him. Forty-one kilometres. Into Rotorua’s central shopping area. The crowds are cheering him on. His pace quickens some more. Monty is still running at his side, smiling and encouraging him on. Roger turns into Government Gardens and now can see the FINISHING LINE ( 34) a couple of hundred metres ahead. Adrenalin takes over and he breaks into a sprint. The crowds cheer some more. Roger is smiling amidst the effort of sprinting those final few metres. The FINISHING LINE ( 34) arrives at last, 42km, 196 metres after the start of the race.
And who was the first to congratulate him? MONTY ( 43) of course. The exhilaration, the tiredness, the joy, the pain, the TRAINING, ( 24) the VICTORY! ( 34) It was all worthwhile. His GOAL ( 34) had been achieved. The reward was in Monty’s smile. Welcome to the MARATHONERS CLUB, ( 66) Roger.
Roger was surrounded by fellow SUCCESSFUL FINISHERS, ( 67) some from his own MARATHON CLINIC, ( 20) whom he greeted by name, together with many others he didn’t know, but was now able to greet as sisters and brothers. They had all run THE RACE, ( 3) had all passed the test together.
Roger wasn’t the first to finish, nor was he the last, but he had run the race to the BEST OF HIS ABILITY. ( 68) At the prizegiving, after the last FINISHER ( 67) had completed the course, the PRESIDENT ( 5) of the MARATHON CLUB ( 66) welcomed all the FINISHERS, ( 67) individually, to the club. JEREMY JOGGER ( 17) was nowhere to be seen. When it came to Roger’s turn, he looked up and his happiness was complete. Roger had recognised the CLUB PRESIDENT. ( 5) He looked a little different out of his running gear but he clearly recognised his friend and mentor, MONTY MARATHONER. ( 43) “Can I ask you just one question, Mr President,”
he asked. “When I was out there running my race and needed support, I looked up and every time saw my friend Monty there to encourage me. How did he manage to do that?” The PRESIDENT ( 5) answered in a gentle voice, “Roger, we ran beside you all of the way. You ran the race to the best of your ability. WE ( 69) are proud of you.”
In the traditional end of marathon, emotional experience, Roger burst into tears, tears of joy that is, and could only just manage to reply, “Without YOUR ( 69) guiding, prompting, example, encouragement and friendship I would never have made it. Really, the PRIZE BELONGS TO YOU.” ( 70) The race was run, the race was won. Roger would savour this moment FOREVER. ( 71)

INTERPRETATION OF
‘The Race’ (Judgement Day)
THE CHRISTIAN WALK FROM GOD’S PERSPECTIVE:
This story illustrates the different perspective to God of our walk with Him. We see our walk as one of training to enter God’s kingdom, to put in as much or as little effort as we desire. God however, views our walk (or race) as commencing with salvation, developing through testing, perseverance and obedience. As we become more dependent upon Him, so the support of His Holy Spirit increases, until we reach the goal we seek and He desires for us – eternal life with Him.
Repented sins are forgiven and forgotten, therefore do not feature in God’s judgement of us.
Salvation qualifies us to start the race, while the rewards are at the end. Ultimate victory is achieved through full submission to Him. Only on the path of obedience can the race be run and won.
While we may be plucked out of the race (by death) at any stage, as we live we are required to keep on training and running, to attain to God’s rewards for us. To give up the training is to sacrifice the rewards. The Choice is ours.
They overcame him (that is satan) by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death. (Revelation 12:11)

FROM THE WORD
THE WORDS OF JESUS
May we hear what the Lord is saying to us.....
Many Desert Jesus (John 6:60-71)
Deciding the teaching was too difficult to accept.
“Are you offended by this? Then what if you were to see the Son ascend to where he was before? The Spirit gives life; the physical body doesn’t do anything. The words I’ve told you are spirit and life! Yet there are some of you who don’t trust me.”
“This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is made possible by the Father.”
Now speaking to the disciples.
“What about you? Do you want to leave as well?”
“Lord, who would we follow? You’re the one who has the words of eternal life. We trust in you, and we’re convinced that you are God’s Holy One.”
“Didn’t I choose you, the twelve disciples? Yet one of you is a devil,”
Men’s Traditions Rebuked.(Matthew 15:1-11, Mark 17:1-16)
Jesus asked why the disciples didn’t wash their hands before they ate.
“Why do you break God’s commandment because of your tradition?” “For God said, ‘Honor your father and mother,’ and ‘Anyone who curses their father or mother should be put to death.’ But you say that if someone tells their father or mother, ‘Whatever you might have expected to get from me is now a gift to God,’ then they don’t have to honor their father. In this way you’ve annulled God’s word for the sake of your tradition. You hypocrites! How well Isaiah described you when he prophesied: ‘These people say they honor me but in their minds they don’t care about me. Their worship of me is pointless. What they teach are just man-made requirements.’”
“Listen, and understand this: it’s not what goes into you through your mouth that defiles you. It’s what comes out of your mouth that defiles you.”
Parable and Explanation of Man’s Traditions to Disciples (Matthew 15:12-20,
Mark 17:17-23 )
When the disciples commented that the Pharisees were offended by this teaching, Jesus gave this parable.
“Every plant my heavenly Father didn’t plant will be uprooted,” Jesus replied. “Forget about them—they are blind guides. If a blind man leads another blind man, then they’ll both fall into a ditch.”
An explanation asked for.
“Haven’t you understood this yet?” “Don’t you see that whatever goes in through the mouth then passes through the stomach, and then leaves the body as wasted? But what comes out through the mouth comes from the mind, and that’s what defiles you. For what comes from the mind are evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, and blasphemy and those are what defile you. Eating with unwashed hands doesn’t defile you.”

THE PART OF OUR CHRISTMAS LETTER RELATING TO THE HOSPITAL
KINGDOM FAITH BASED HOSPITAL
Finally, after a 2 ½ year wait we received approval as a Service Provider for the Government backed NHIF National Health Insurance Fund, a cover held by round 25-30 % of the people in our area. This increased our daily client numbers from 20 per day to 50. In more recent times, as we instituted sore clinical services, the numbers are climbing again by another 50%, and this at a time of generally low demand for hospital services as we are not in the wetter, cooler, Malaria season, plus people have harvested their crops and have food to eat. The treatment of Malaria forms over half of the Hospital’s business.
The Challenges have arisen through the difficulty of collecting funds due from NHIF in a timely manner, plus some staff issues related to growth. Success here comes with many pitfalls along the way!
If you would like our full Christmas letter, please write to me at david@wwj.org.nz
FOOD! FOOD! FOOD!
The last few days, the hospital has quietened off a little, although Omicron cases are now coming through, including a quarter of our staff! No-one escapes, as masks, while helpful for most things, do not prevent Omicron.
So back to food this week!
MANDASI is my favourite food here. No wonder, now I have found out the ingredients! It is like a light donut! Flour, oil, sugar (hence me liking it) and baking powder, are the ingredients.
Here Judy's hands are mixing the dough.
AND THE RESULT!
Yours Truly having a bite!

DAVID'S DOODLINGS
716. Without His priceless love bought on the Cross, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.
717. The Cross of Jesus points in all ways - up, down and around. There is no way of avoiding it!
718. To deny the Cross is to deny Christ.
719. The miracle of the Cross is that the very best could come out of the very worst.
720. The Cross of Jesus was designed to take life, but ironically served to give life to all who believe.
721. There is still no greater power working in the world today than that of the Cross of Jesus.
722. The devil takes, the Cross gives.
723. Pilate's charge, THIS IS JESUS, THE KING OF THE JEWS was both the present truth and a prophecy yet to be fulfilled.
724. Don't cross the Cross. It will cost you your life!
725. Jesus freely gave His life for us on the Cross. He invites us to freely give our lives back to Him in return.
726. New Zealand has 4 million people and 40 million sheep. Yet, if it weren't for the Cross of Jesus, our sheep numbers would still be insufficient to pay the ongoing cost of sin. For this, the sheep are most grateful to Him!

141. Hard?
Ever wondered what it was like for Jesus at Nazareth High?
Nazareth Secondary School Term Report
Student: J. CHRIST Form: III Term: 1
SUBJECT GRADE TEACHER'S COMMENT
RELIGION (D) To the question "Who made the world?" persisted in answering
'My dad'. Claims bible originated from the same source.
ENGLISH (D+) Tends to speak and write in archaic forms and uses outmoded
figures of speech.
HISTORY (A) Excellent pupil of ancient and Religious History.
GEOGRAPHY (C-) Assignment on 'Hot, dry lands' was excellent, but shows
little interest in the rest. In geology, keeps talking
about the Rock of Ages instead of the ages of Rock.
SOCIAL STUDIES (B+) Shows keen interest in social issues.
MATHEMATICS (F) Lacks basics. Keeps muttering about 'Three in one' and 'I and
the father are one'.
GENERAL SCIENCE (D) Lacks discipline - e.g., when asked to repeat the experiment
for making hydrogen, claimed he knew a better way.
GRAPHIC COMMUNICATION
(D) Prefers to draw with a stick in the sand to pencil and paper.
CONSUMER EDUCATION (C+) Interesting ideas about alternative life style: Something about
living like sparrows and lilies of the fields...too impractical.
ART/CRAFT (B) Obviously has imagination and creativity, a good potter - likes
working with dirt and water.
MATERIAL STUDIES (A) Excellent in woodwork section. Obviously receives help and
stimulation at home.
MUSIC/DRAMA (B+) A keen member of the school choir. On occasions can be
frighteningly dramatic.
COMMUNITY (A) Keenly interested in all aspects of Living community.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION (D-) A trouble maker - e.g. during the learn-to-swim campaign insisted
on trying to walk across the pool.
HEALTH CLASSES (A) Shows a remarkable aptitude for first aid and knowledge of the
body.
CLASS TEACHER'S COMMENT: This boy has a very unhealthy tendency to form gangs. He has organised twelve of his friends into a gang and is seen constantly in the company of the children of publicans and sinners. He needs to be more selective in his choice of friends. Also, he should learn to keep his hair at a tidy length and not wear sandals with the school uniform.

A DAVID MUSING
It is along time since have written a proper poem, rather than just a short verse. Now the Lord has inspired me to write this, only my second ever psalm. May it help
PSALM 2
(of David Tait)
Oh Lord how can it be
Life is challenging me.
The virus that is scaring us all,
The long, the short. the tall.
Oh Lord how can it be
Life is challenging me.
To see so many, many, walk away from You,
Faith destroyed, cure hasn't come through.
Oh Lord how can it be
Life is challenging me.
Surely Lord, for we are so clever today,
A cure now, just a stones throw away!
Oh Lord how can it be
Life is challenging me.
Why can't the people now see, that You,
are the Mightiest, through and through?
Oh Lord how can it be
Life is challenging me.
May we come closer to You, not turn away,
Yes, you're my faithful God, all of the day.
"Don't be troubled my Son, for I am with you,
And all who turn to me, to you all I am true.
For I have indeed afflicted a straying mankind,
Seeing whose faith is real, now surely to find,
For faith is always built through troubles my son.
When life is too easy, people depart one by one.
To truly follow me takes courage, to trust me true.
For all who take it, my kingdom is here for you."
Thank you Lord
Amen

Until next time.
