OUR SOURCE - GOD OR MAN
DISCIPLESHIP IS CAUGHT NOT TAUGHTThe CHRISTIAN EDUCATION BUSINESS is a huge one, from Theological Institutions and Bible Schools to Christian books and videos, often even to Sunday sermons. The business absorbs billions of dollars in facilities, teachers and production costs. It is self-perpetuating, and generation after generation of good meaning believers are hooked into the belief that they can get closer to God by participating in this treadmill of learning.
Sadly however, today more than ever, when the resource is greater than it has ever been, the conversion rate of BELIEVERS into DISCIPLES through the traditional church is less than it has ever been. People are leaving the system in increasing numbers, not having lost their faith, but having lost faith in the system. While the system is now more sophisticated than it has ever been, but it is not changing people into true disciples of Christ, prepared to sacrifice everything for their personal Saviour and Lord.
This discussion is not church bashing, but endeavoring to find a way ahead where believers can be discipled in a more effective way than they are presently, to be encouraged to grow into the image of Jesus.
Today we live in a world where knowledge rules supreme. The more we know about a subject the better we are. This philosophy has grown out of the Greek culture, upon which the education system today is based. It has served us well in many ways, particularly in the science and technology field, where our knowledge of the world around is increasing exponentially, daily.
In Christ too, the opportunities to learn more about Jesus, the Holy Spirit and the Father, are greater than any time in history. On the one hand, many are acquiring more knowledge of God, while on the other, people are walking away, finding all the knowledge to be useless, not bringing peace nor commitment to their walk and life.
The church has got so enamored by education, that in the West at least, a religious qualification is required in order to come into the pastoral ministry. PASTORING HAS BECOME A VOCATION, NOT A CALLING.
WWJD
Or rather, what did Jesus do?
Jesus, in the manner of the custom of the Rabbinical system, took 12 men (along with some women), and trained them in the ways of God. They were men rejected by the Rabbis as uneducated and unworthy, but He changed 11 of them into a team that changed the world.
Yes, the Disciples learned directly from Jesus, through teaching, but also by experiencing day to day life with Him. The DISCIPLES CAUGHT DISCIPLESHIP THROUGH INTERACTION WITH JESUS. Here a very few examples of their close interpersonal relationship.....
[ Jesus Calms the Storm ] Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. (Matthew 8:23)
While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew’s house, many tax collectors and sinners came and ate with him and his disciples. (Matthew 9:10)
Jesus got up and went with him, and so did his disciples. (Matthew 9:19)
Of course, Jesus is not with us now. So who is going to teach us today? Jesus told us.....
25 “All this I have spoken while still with you. 26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. (John 14:25-6)
Jesus too, left us with His Word, as contained in the New Testament.....
24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand.
Jesus, just before He ascended into Heaven, charged His disciples .....
19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.†Matthew 28:19-20)
The first element then, in building discipleship, is a close personal relationship between the teacher and the the believer, sharing not only teaching but life experience.
Continued next week.
FROM THE WORD
THE WORDS OF JESUSMay we hear what the Lord is saying to us.
Peter Confesses Jesus as Christ (Matthew 16:13-20, Mark 8:27-30)
When the disciples were asked by Jesus about His divinity.
“Who do people say that the Son of man is?â€
“But what about you?†“Who do you say I am?â€
“You are truly blessed, Simon son of John,†Jesus told him. “For this wasn’t revealed to you by human flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven. I also tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church and the powers of death won’t overcome it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you ban on earth will be banned in heaven, and whatever you allow on earth will be allowed in heaven.â€
Jesus Rebukes Peter (Matthew 16:21-8, Mark 8:31-9:1, Luke 9:18-27)
Again the question was asked. Peter gave the same reply.
“All these crowds of people—who do they say I am?â€
“But what about you?†“Who do you say I am?â€
Peter was told it was not easy path, for all involved.
“The Son of man must experience terrible sufferings,†“He will be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the religious teachers. He will be killed, but on the third day he will rise again.â€
“If any one of you wants to follow me, you must deny yourself, pick up your cross daily, and follow me,†“For if you want to save your life, you will lose it; and if you lose your life for my sake, you will save it. What do you benefit by gaining the whole world if you end up lost or destroyed? If you are ashamed of me and my message, the Son of man will be ashamed of you when he comes in his glory, and in the glory of the Father and the holy angels. I tell you the truth, some standing here won’t taste death until they see the kingdom of God.â€
The Transfiguration (Matthew 17:1-8, Mark 9:2-13, Luke 9:28-36)
On a high mountain, in front of Peter, James and John.
“Get up,†he told them. “Don’t be afraid.â€
“Don’t tell anybody what you saw until the Son of man has risen from the dead,â€
The disciples were told that the Elijah to return prior to the Saviour coming was indeed John the Baptist.
“It’s true that Elijah comes to put everything in place, 12but I tell you that Elijah has already come and yet people didn’t recognize who he was. They did whatever they felt like to him. In the same way the Son of man will also suffer at their hands.â€

A NOTE ABOUT AFRICA
This article was published in last weeks A Note of Encouragement, sent out by CILOA - Encouraging one another as long as it is called Today.IN HIS TIMING
...by David Tait
This year my wife, Kathy, and I came to an exciting decision! We will follow God who has made the way possible for us to shift, long term, from New Zealand to Kenya. How did that come about?
My life once lay in ruins. Bankrupt, desperate, unable to provide for my family. Then I gave in to God. He came and took care of us and rebuilt our lives together. With Jesus, the difference was amazing.
One day as I was about to finish reading the entire Bible and feeling pleased with myself, the Lord suddenly stopped me at Revelation 12:11: They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death.
At that moment, He instructed me to build my life and His ministry upon that verse. It would be the foundation for Walking With Jesus Ministries. Ever since we have focused on helping others get deeper into God---to truly walk with Him.
Here's what I want you to do...one day.
For years I wrote and taught how to do this, even sharing His vision in Asia and Africa. Then 4 years ago the Lord gave us a new direction. He told me to go live in Kenya and minister with our friends, David and Selina Walukhu. He would make the way for us. So we waited...and waited.
In August, 2015, I went to Kenya after a 10 year absence, intent on talking to David and Selina. Due to our schedules, we had only an hour so they quickly showed me where they were living.
Their "home" was a 6 acre compound, financed and built by a Pentecostal church in Holland. It included a large house, big Bible school, greenhouses, outdoor horticulture, aquaculture and poultry. It was amazing. All was going well with their Dutch involvement.
Kathy also wanted to check it out. Her opportunity came in 2016 when we went to India for our son's wedding. India is much closer to Kenya and we found some very cheap airfares.
We envisaged going to Kenya, helping in the Bible school, and expanding our ministry into the surrounding countries. Meanwhile, Kathy would find a job to help people, probably in nursing.
It's God's vision and His plans, not ours.
But when we arrived, everything had dramatically changed! The Dutch church had withdrawn and the compound was now in the hands of local Trustees, who were looking for a new vision. The new situation was tailor made for us to come in and provide guidance to the people there!
We asked medical people, community leaders, and others what their greatest medical need was. Without exception the answer was "eyes". It "just so happens" that Kathy's primary nursing experience is as an eye nurse, both as a theatre nurse and in running eye clinics.
So now we are heading to Kenya to become part of the local community, sharing together and learning from each other. We will help with the compound and work toward building an eye clinic.
Unbelievable! The vision tarried for 4 years before it was God's time for fulfillment! So if you are waiting for His direction, be encouraged. If it is His vision, the day will come...in His timing.
Continuing to follow God as He directs our steps,
Chuck

DAVID'S DOODLINGS
HEAVENLY TRUTHS GOD HAS SHOWN ME739. - 809. God has shown me that...
... the more I get into Him, the more He gets into me.
... the more time I spend with Him, the more time He has to make changes in me.
... His love never fails, but other's love may.
... the reward for loving others is found in Heaven, rather than on earth.
... life is to be our investment in eternity.
... ultimately, I am the one responsible for me.
... salvation is a process, not an event.
... life's limitations are man driven, not God given.
... when my wants line up with His desires, things happen.
... I need to place godliness even above wisdom.

454. BEING PRUDENT
A little boy walked down the beach, and as he did, he spied a woman sitting under a beach umbrella on the sand.
He walked up to her and asked, "Are you a Christian?" She said, "Yes."
"Do you read your Bible every day?" She nodded her head, "Yes."
Do you pray often?" the boy asked next, and again she answered, "Yes."
With that he asked his final question, "Will you hold my quarter while I go swimming?"
453. GODS WAY?
ï‚· And God populated the earth with broccoli and cauliflower and spinach and green and yellow vegetables of all kinds, so man and woman would live long and healthy lives. And Satan developed the fast foods industry. And fast foods brought forth the 99 cent double cheeseburger. And Satan said to man, "You want fries with that?" And man said, "Supersize them." And man gained pounds.
ï‚· And God created the healthful yoghurt, that woman might keep her figure that man found so fair. And Satan froze the yoghurt, and he brought forth chocolate, nuts and brightly colored sprinkle candy to put on the yoghurt. And woman gained pounds.
ï‚· And God said, "Try my crispy fresh salad." And Satan brought forth creamy dressings, bacon bits, and shredded cheese. And there was ice cream for dessert. And woman gained pounds.
ï‚· And God said, "I have sent your heart healthy vegetables and olive oil with which to cook them." And Satan brought forth chicken-fried steak so big it needed its own platter. And man gained pounds, and his bad cholesterol went through the roof.
ï‚· And God brought forth running shoes, and man resolved to lose those extra pounds. And Satan brought forth cable TV with remote control so man would not have to toil to change channels between ESPN and ESPN2. And man gained pounds.
ï‚· And God brought forth the potato, a vegetable naturally low in fat and brimming with nutrition. And Satan peeled off the healthful skin and sliced the starchy centre into chips and deep-fried them. And he created sour cream dip also. And man clutched his remote control and ate the potato chips swaddled in cholesterol. And Satan saw and said, "It is good." And man went into cardiac arrest.
ï‚· And God sighed, and created quadruple bypass surgery, angioplastys, and stents. And Satan established HMOs...

LAST WEEKS QUESTION: Is it possible for twins to have different fathers?ANSWER: Yes. There have been several documented cases of women giving birth to twins who had different fathers, including cases where the children were of different races. To do so, the mother had to have conceived both children in close proximity. There has also been one recent case where a mother gave birth to unrelated ‘twins’. In that instance, the mother underwent in vitro fertilisation and had her own child and the embryo of another couple accidentally implanted in her. (Possible, but not the way God planned it.)

264. STORM WARNINGS
The practice of naming hurricanes began early in the 20th century when an Australian weather forecaster decided to insult politicians he didn't like by naming devastating tropical storms after them. (Were Australian politicians all females back then?)

95. HEAT WAVETemperatures had soared to 109 degrees in Abilene, and we Texans tried everything to cool off. I had just finished some yard work and was eagerly heading for an icy shower when my wife approached, wrapped in a bath towel. "Sorry, honey," she said. "I used all the cold water."

My father, a retired Air Force pilot, often sprinkles his conversation with aviation jargon. I didn't realize what flying had meant to him, however, until the day he

97. GENIUS?
A guy did system support in a law firm. One day, he had to log a user off and then back on. He entered her initials and then she gave me her password.
Her password was "genius".
After three tries and the system telling him "access denied," he asked her how to spell it.
She said, "G - E - N - I - O - U - S."
98. YEAH RIGHT!
In the office where I work, there is a constant battle between our technical-support director and customer-service personnel over the room temperature. The frustrated director, trying to get us to understand his position, announced one afternoon, "We need to keep the temperature below seventy-five degrees or the computers will overheat."
Thinking this was just another excuse, one of my shivering colleagues retorted, "Yeah, right! So how did they keep the computers from overheating before there was air conditioning?"
99. THE ULTIMATE
I took my 4 year old son, Josh, out to McDonald's for dinner one evening for a "guy night".
As we were eating our hamburgers, Josh asked "Daddy, what are these little things on the hamburger buns?"
I responded that they were tiny seeds and were ok to eat.
He was quiet for a couple of minutes and I could tell he was in deep thought.
Finally, Josh looked up and said, "Dad, if we go home and plant these seeds in our backyard, we will have enough hamburgers to last forever."

One in Four British Christians Say Resurrection of Jesus Didn't Occur: Survey
BY BRANDON SHOWALTER , CP REPORTERApr 10, 2017 | 10:15 AM
One in four people who identify themselves as "Christians" in England say that they believe that the physical resurrection of Jesus Christ did not happen, according to a new poll.
ComRes conducted the survey of 2,010 British adults by telephone for 10 days at the beginning of February, asking them a series questions about their beliefs on the Bible and Easter. BBC local radio commissioned the survey for Palm Sunday, measuring the responses of the "General Public," "All Christians," and "Active Christians," which refers to Christians who attend religious services at least once per month.
When it comes to the specific event that Christians around the world will celebrate on Easter Sunday, Christ's resurrection, half of the general public replied they do not believe that it happened, as did a quarter of people who identified as Christians.
Seventeen percent of all respondents believed that the resurrection occurred exactly as it is described in the Bible, while 31 percent of Christian respondents and 57 percent of active Christians agreed. Nine percent of non-religious respondents said they believed in the resurrection and, 1 percent of whom said they believed the Bible version.
Exactly half of those surveyed did not believe in resurrection whatsoever.
"To ask an adult to believe in the resurrection the way they did when they were at Sunday school simply won't do and that's true of much of the key elements of the Christian faith," said Lorraine Cavanagh, the acting general secretary for Modern Church, which promotes a liberal Christian theology.
An "adult faith requires that it be constantly questioned, constantly re-interpreted," she said, highlighting the progression of science, and intellectual and philosophical thought.
Those polled were also asked whether or not they believed in some kind of life after death. Forty-six percent of said they did while another 46 percent said they did not. Options of life after death in the survey included reincarnation, Heaven, and Hell, and others like "we go to a parallel universe/the astral plane of existence."
More women than men were likely to believe in life after death, 56 to 36 percent, the survey found. Twenty percent of nonreligious people also said they believed in a form of life after death.
Yet about one third of Christians surveyed (31 percent) stated they did not believe in life after death at all, while approximately one fifth (21 percent) of non-Christians said they did.
Anglican Bishop of Manchester David Walker welcomed the survey, calling it "important" and that it proves "that many British people, despite not being regular churchgoers, hold core Christian beliefs."
"Alongside them it finds surprisingly high levels of religious belief among those who follow no specific religion, often erroneously referred to as secularists or atheists," he said.
Linda Woodhead, a Lancaster University professor at the Department of Politics, Philosophy and Religion said the survey "confirms that Britain is now split down the middle between those who call themselves Christian and those who say no religion."
"But this is not a simple division between religious and secular," she said.
Perhaps surprisingly, the poll also found that younger British Christians, ages 18 to 34, were more likely to attend church regularly than Christians between the ages of 45 and 64.

A DAVID MUSING
This has been a week of flooding in certain parts of New Zealand, a result of the remnants of Cyclone Debbie which devastated the East Coast of Australia the week before. Fortunately, our area, while experiencing heavy rain, missed out on the worst of the downpours which affected some areas. In common with much of the rest of the world, our country has been experiencing extreme weather events and numerous earthquakes, events that are promised for end times.
I am not one who looks out for such things, but cannot help questioning the numerous once in a hundred years floods and earthquakes we are having seemingly every year. This weeks flood was supposedly a once in 500 year event. Ummmmmmmmm.......
Persecution of Christians is another promise of end times. Some are already experiencing this, but it is to become more common as we approach the return of Jesus.
How prepared for what is coming are we?
Until next week.......
MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOU BLESS GOD.
