MUSINGS ON THE KINGDOM - PAST, FUTURE AND PRESENT
KINGDOM PRESENT - THE KINGDOM PARABLESThe Parable of the Tenants
33 “Listen to another parable: There was a landowner who planted a vineyard. He put a wall around it, dug a winepress in it and built a watchtower. Then he rented the vineyard to some farmers and went away on a journey. 34 When the harvest time approached, he sent his servants to the tenants to collect his fruit. 35 “The tenants seized his servants; they beat one, killed another, and stoned a third. 36 Then he sent other servants to them, more than the first time, and the tenants treated them the same way. 37 Last of all, he sent his son to them. ‘They will respect my son,’ he said. 38 “But when the tenants saw the son, they said to each other, ‘This is the heir. Come, let’s kill him and take his inheritance.’ 39 So they took him and threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. 40 “Therefore, when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?†41 “He will bring those wretches to a wretched end,†they replied, “and he will rent the vineyard to other tenants, who will give him his share of the crop at harvest time.†42 Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures: â€â€˜The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone; the Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes’? 43 “Therefore I tell you that the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people who will produce its fruit. 44 He who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces, but he on whom it falls will be crushed.†45 When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard Jesus’ parables, they knew he was talking about them. 46 They looked for a way to arrest him, but they were afraid of the crowd because the people held that he was a prophet. (Matthew 21:33-46)
Under the Old Testament church, in the form of the Tabernacles of Moses and the Temples that followed, the priesthood was primarily responsible for the spiritual wellbeing of the people. God entrusted His church to the Jews, more specifically, to the priesthood.
This parable talks about how the leadership, in particular, rejected and killed the prophets that God had sent over the centuries to provide correction and direction to the people. Being a prophet in Old Testament times was a high risk occupation! Stoning was a common fate! e.g. Zechariah.
21 But they plotted against him, and by order of the king they stoned him to death in the courtyard of the LORD’s temple. (2 Chronicles 24:21)
Planting a vineyard is an expensive business and it takes time for the vines to mature and provide a good harvest. This is the nature of business.
Take for example, on a much shorter time scale, the establishment of a 'Seekers Megamart'. It costs us $20,000 to set up a new shop. We need a weekly turnover of $4-6,000, depending upon location, to make it economic. We do not expect to start out with that turnover, but over a period of a year, with staff training, publicity and word of mouth, we expect the turnover to approach that level. At the one year point, we will make a decision as to whether to continue in that location, or not.
God was a lot more patient than me! His trainers were killed on a regular basis by the religious management! So, in a last ditch effort to get the 'spiritual vineyard' back on track, He sent Jesus, His son. We know the result. Jesus foretold that He was going to meet a similar fate as had the prophets earlier.
The time of decision had come.
The kingdom of God was to be transferred from Jewish to gentile custody. The Jewish religious leaders were finally held accountable for their actions over the centuries.
Custody of the church has been placed in gentile hands until there is a reconciliation of believing Jews and gentiles at the end of the age.
The 'playing field' has changed. Jesus sacrificed Himself for us. He is now our sole intercessor with God. No longer do we approach God through a priesthood (or 'pastorhood'). We are PERSONALLY RESPONSIBLE for our OWN SALVATION, past, present and future. The kingdom of God is available to, and must be sought by, each one of us individually. For the kingdom of God is not found in a building or denomination, but within the individual believer.
20 Once, having been asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, Jesus replied, “The kingdom of God does not come with your careful observation, 21 nor will people say, ‘Here it is,’ or ‘There it is,’ because the kingdom of God is within you.†(Luke 17:20-1)
As leaders we need to be very aware of this New Testament reality and be extremely careful not to become de facto priests. We can help point the way, but no-one can come to Jesus through us. It is between the individual and Jesus.
6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. (John 14:6)
Likewise, it is the role of leadership to train the people to do the work, not to take it all upon ourselves.
11 It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, 12 to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up (Ephesians 4:11-12)
It is only when leadership truly understand and applies this principle that we will come into end time unity.
13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. (Ephesians 4:13)
I know it seems impossible. I realise it is our natural inclination to want to take on people's burdens. Being real, it feels nice to have people reliant upon us! But it is not the way of God for these days. We need to be so careful that we do not now suffer the same fate as the priests of the Old Testament, through disobeying God's instructions.

FROM THE WORD
"After the death of Jehoiada, the officials of Judah came and paid homage to the king, and he listened to them. They abandoned the temple of the LORD, the God of their fathers, and worshiped Asherah poles and idols. Because of their guilt, God’s anger came upon Judah and Jerusalem. Although the LORD sent prophets to the people to bring them back to him, and though they testified against them, they would not listen. Then the Spirit of God came upon Zechariah son of Jehoiada the priest. He stood before the people and said, “This is what God says: ‘Why do you disobey the LORD’s commands? You will not prosper. Because you have forsaken the LORD, he has forsaken you.’†But they plotted against him, and by order of the king they stoned him to death in the courtyard of the LORD’s temple. King Joash did not remember the kindness Zechariah’s father Jehoiada had shown him but killed his son, who said as he lay dying, “May the LORD see this and call you to account.â€"(2 Chronicles 24:17-22)Jesus the Way to the Father
"Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?†Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really knew me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.†Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.†Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you are not just my own. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the miracles themselves. I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it." (John 14:5-13)
Unity in the Body of Christ
"As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit— just as you were called to one hope when you were called— one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. But to each one of us grace has been given as Christ apportioned it. This is why it says: “When he ascended on high, he led captives in his train and gave gifts to men.†(What does “he ascended†mean except that he also descended to the lower, earthly regions? He who descended is the very one who ascended higher than all the heavens, in order to fill the whole universe.) It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming. Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ. From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work." (Ephesians 4:1-16)

FACTS FOR FUN
LAST WEEKS QUESTION: Who were the Buccaneers?ANSWER: Today, ‘buccaneer’ is simply another word for pirate.
Buccaneers started out as hunters on the islands we now know as Haiti
and the Dominican Republic. Their name came from the French word
‘boucan’ (meaning barbecue), as they liked to barbecue their meat on
grills. The Buccaneers were driven out by the Spanish in the sixteenth
century and to get revenge they teamed up with other persecuted
peoples, such as escaped slaves and deserters, and began attacking
Spanish ships, particularly those bringing goods to the Spanish American
colonies. By the seventeenth century, the word ‘buccaneer’ was used to
describe pirates and privateers based in the West Indies. (Do ‘buccaneer
businessmen’ have West Indian Tax Havens?)
THIS WEEK'S QUESTION: Is it true that August stole a day from
February?
Answer Next Week.
232. RACIALLY INCLUSIVE!
A 15-pound turkey typically has about 70 percent white meat and 30 percent dark meat. (Sadly for the Turkey, they don’t get to keep it for very long!)
233. SOMETHING IN THE NAME?
Spam, spam, spam: One billion cans of Spam had been sold by 1959. The two billion mark was hit in 1970, followed by three billion in 1980, four billion in 1986, and five billion cans in 1993. (First in the can, then in the computer!)
234. LEMON POWER
Thin-skinned lemons are the juiciest. (Thin skinned people the sourest too?)

191. THE REAL OIL!
There are a lot of folks that can't understand how we ran out of oil here in the USA.
Well, here's the answer: It's simple.........nobody bothered to check the oil. Didn't know we were getting low. And of course the reason for that is geographical. Most of the
oil is in Texas and Oklahoma, and all the dipsticks are in Washington, D.C.
190. NO CRAYONS

"Not really," Willie said, "What happened to all them crayons?"

BIBLE TRIVIA (Old Testament Family Life)
RECENT STUDIES HAVE CONFIRMED.......... that the safest time to perform circumcision is on the 8th day. Vitamen K, which causes blood to coagulate, is not produced in the required quantities until the 5th to 7th days. On the 8th day the body contains 10% more prothrombin than normal, an element important in the clotting of blood.

Nigerian Pastors Buried in Bauchi as Tensions Continue in Jos
By Dan WoodingFounder of ASSIST Ministries
NIGERIA (ANS) -- Funerals were held on Friday, April 16, 2010, for the Reverend and Mrs. Ishaya Kada of the Church of Christ in Nigerian (COCIN) Boto in Tafawa Balewa, Bauchi State, who were hacked to death and burnt to ashes by Muslim assailants on April 12.
According to Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW), the couple had only recently returned to the area after their church was burnt down in January by Muslim refugees from Jos.
"Following the murders, police in Tafawa Balewa interrogated the local Village Head and three others, who disclosed the identities of the perpetrators," a CSW spokesperson told ANS. "As the search for the killers continues, the Governor of Bauchi, Isah Yuguda, has expressed his condolences, and has contributed towards funeral expenses and the repair of the church building. Gvernor Yuguda also promised to assist the couple's children with the costs of their education."
CSW says that meanwhile, tensions persist in Plateau State after a suspected bomb exploded prematurely on April 12, 2010, in a room in the Dadin Kuwa area of Jos, severely injuring three young Muslims, who are currently being interrogated in hospital. In addition, Ishaku Sunday,a youth who vanished on April 5, 2010, while grazing cattle with a friend in the Vom area has been found alive, but with severe machete wounds.
Ishaku describes being attacked by four Fulani men armed with swords. His friend's mutilated corpse was discovered the day after their disappearance. Fulani men are also said to be responsible for hacking another man to death on 14 April in Kassa, Barkin Ladi.
The continuing attacks and "silent killings" during curfew hours have caused many to question the army's willingness or ability to protect them. There is also growing speculation that an attack on Kuru Jenta on 11 March, which targeted two community leaders, may have been carried out by rogue military elements.
Mervyn Thomas, Chief Executive of Christian Solidarity Worldwide, says: "Our prayers are with the Kada's children on this sad day, and we commend the Bauchi authorities for proactively pursuing those responsible for these appalling murders. CSW also commends Governor Yuguda, for his conciliatory actions which will assist in assuaging fears and fostering reconciliation.
"However, we remain deeply concerned at the continuing insecurity in Plateau State, and at renewed speculation that rogue military elements may be behind some of the violence there. We call on the Nigerian Federal Government to urgently review and adjust current security arrangements and to take decisive action against military personnel who are found to be involved in extrajudicial executions or attempted assassinations."
For further information or to arrange interviews please contact , email admin@csw.org.uk or visit www.csw.org.uk.

WAXING LYRICAL
Another Bowentown adventure. It is amazing how the Lord communicates with youwhen you are genuinely seeking Him. I am one of those strange people who enjoys
running – well, most of the time anyway. This poem shows how the Lord is not 2000
years behind the times, but communicates with us in ways that are relevant to our
circumstances and life.
ON THE RUN continued
His Spirit’s tide returned in a captivating flow,
First it would come in, then out it would go.
Sometimes in more, then sometimes less,
But always seeking, God’s people to bless.
As I sat on my rock, His words became clearer,
Then a picture of my life, the waves ever nearer.
For I’d sat back and watched The Spirit, oh so long,
Did I need Him in my life, was it right, was it wrong?
Sitting there, the waves lapped playfully round my feet,
Ever closer now, for The Spirit’s coming, me to greet,
Then suddenly my special, bigger wave came,
Engulfing me, so I would never be the same.
When it happened in my life, came as a great shock
To myself and others. Thought I would never unlock
My heart to the wonders of The Spirit you see,
No, there was no hope for a stalwart like me!
So onto the top of my rock, did I hop,
There was no way now, I could stop,
For the wonders of scripture, I was eagerly seeking to behold,
Standing on the rock of Jesus, He would me, start to mould.
Standing on the rock gave a new perspective,
For of new truths, I was ever more receptive.
As I looked down there, into the water,
Seeing the tide flow, allowing no quarter.
First there was the sand, a myriad of it you know,
Pushed about by the tide, not seeing where to go.
For there are many Christians just like that sand,
Drifting with the flow, not knowing how to stand.
In the water too, were many plants a bobbing,
So painful, one could almost hear them sobbing!
For they had grown initially, but their roots were short,
Overcome by the troubles of life, their God they did abort.
But the saddest of all to me, in the now seething cauldron,
Were the dead leaves floating, no protection to call on,
Even as I watched one, broken, smashed into a rock,
Yes a Christian, but the Spirit’s power, he did mock.
My heart lifted, looking at the rocks out there,
For them, the turmoil all around did not scare.
But as I looked closer, I could see rough edges worn away,
For The Spirit was moulding them, they were there to stay!
I realised then, the value of ‘The Rock’ in my life,
For he protects me, from the effects of the strife
That surrounds me. Christians, so hard to believe!
Refusing the mighty power of The Spirit to receive!
