A 'NEEDS' TO 'WANTS' GENERATION
The 'baby boomer' generation, those born after World War 2 up to the 1960's, to which Kathy and I belong, is the first of a new phenomenon in the Western world. For we are the first generation to face no real hardship in life. Sure, we have seen recession, but not depression, regional wars but not world wars. We've experienced a general level of prosperity previously enjoyed only by the privileged elite. And when things do go wrong, we have backup state social welfare systems to take care of us. Yet still we complain! But we and following generations, are the most blessed materially, in all history. So, of course, we give all the glory to God! Well.... no, actually! The more we get, the more we glorify...... ourselves! Let's face it, we in the West, no longer need to depend upon God for our provision.
Ministering to a 'wants' rather than a 'needs' generation, is a key challenge, maybe even the greatest challenge, facing the church today. . A battle the church is losing - certainly here in our home country of New Zealand, to which the many empty pews testify. In my youth, nearly half the population went to church regularly - now it would be not much more than 5%. We have changed from the country that used to send the highest number of missionaries overseas per head of population in the world, to one where missionaries from the countries we used to send to, are now coming here! This is happening throughout Europe as well as Australasia, and even now, so I understand, in the USA as well.
The major adjustment much of the church has made to try and counter this reality has been to go along with societal trends and preach a prosperity doctrine. Effectively, join our church and God will make you richer than your neighbours who don't come! Yes, I am exaggerating to make a point, but I trust you will see a germ of truth in this proposition. Obviously, judging by church attendance's, this method is not working.
So what did Jesus teach? How did He live?
The most striking thing about Jesus was his lack of materialism. Completely the opposite to us today! He had no house of His own, He owned no chariots, to the best of our knowledge He had but a single set of clothes. He enjoyed eating and celebrations, but didn't automatically head for the top table. Most of the time He ate the simple fare of the ordinary people. He wore no jewellery. He was more at home with the poor than the rich, for they were willing to consider His message.
20 Looking at his disciples, he said: “Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. 21 Blessed are you who hunger now, for you will be satisfied. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh. 22 Blessed are you when men hate you, when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man. 23 “Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, because great is your reward in heaven. For that is how their fathers treated the prophets. 24 “But woe to you who are rich, for you have already received your comfort. 25 Woe to you who are well fed now, for you will go hungry. Woe to you who laugh now, for you will mourn and weep. (Luke 6:20-25)
Jesus didn't leave a will, for He had no material possessions, but He did leave a spiritual inheritance, a New Covenant available to all who will accept it.
10 This is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after that time, declares the Lord. I will put my laws in their minds and write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. (Hebrews 8:10)
Jesus replaced the Old Covenant of the Law, in which success was measured by earthly possessions, and replaced it with a new, spiritual covenant, based on servanthood, upon sacrifice, upon building treasure in heaven. The old covenant was replaced because it didn't work. King Solomon fell into sin and His successors lost all that he had been given. Jesus brought a new, spiritual inheritance that will never fail, for those who embrace it.
Just like the Jews under Solomon who became self-sufficient and self-reliant, so today's generation in the West has fallen into the same trap. And are suffering the same spiritual consequences.
So what is the answer? To participate in the kingdom we must live as Jesus lived. Disciples of a Rabbi would copy their Rabbi in every possible way. And Jesus is our Rabbi. The early New Testament church illustrated the practical application of this lifestyle when they sold their property to help support each other.
Today of course, in the West, for better or worse, the welfare state primarily fulfils that function for us. But there are still huge needs in the rest of the world that we can help meet.
Yes, Jesus is calling as away from our acquisitive Western lifestyle to one of sacrificial servanthood. WE are required to differentiate ourselves from the generation where 'wants' has overtaken 'needs'. To live a humble lifestyle, as did Jesus and use the wealth we have to help others and benefit the kingdom of God. We say we need greater prosperity to provide money for world evangelisation. But the reality is, we already have the money, if only we are prepared to spend it for God's benefit rather than our own! As Jesus Himself said:
“Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom. 33 Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will not be exhausted, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. 34 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. (Luke 12:32-4)
Where are our heart's today?

FROM THE WORD
"If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death— even death on a cross! Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father." (Philippians 2:1-11)"“When the kings of the earth who committed adultery with her and shared her luxury see the smoke of her burning, they will weep and mourn over her. Terrified at her torment, they will stand far off and cry: â€â€˜Woe! Woe, O great city, O Babylon, city of power!
In one hour your doom has come!’ “The merchants of the earth will weep and mourn over her because no one buys their cargoes any more— cargoes of gold, silver, precious stones and pearls; fine linen, purple, silk and scarlet cloth; every sort of citron wood, and articles of every kind made of ivory, costly wood, bronze, iron and marble; cargoes of cinnamon and spice, of incense, myrrh and frankincense, of wine and olive oil, of fine flour and wheat; cattle and sheep; horses and carriages; and bodies and souls of men. “They will say, ‘The fruit you longed for is gone from you. All your riches and splendor have vanished, never to be recovered.’ The merchants who sold these things and gained their wealth from her will stand far off, terrified at her torment. They will weep and mourn and cry out: â€â€˜Woe! Woe, O great city, dressed in fine linen, purple and scarlet, and glittering with gold, precious stones and pearls! In one hour such great wealth has been brought to ruin!" (Revelation 18:9-17a)
"Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace; the sinful mind is hostile to God. It does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. Those controlled by the sinful nature cannot please God. You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ. But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness. And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you. Therefore, brothers, we have an obligation—but it is not to the sinful nature, to live according to it. For if you live according to the sinful nature, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live, because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. 15 For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.†The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory." (Romans 8:5-17)

DAVID'S DOODLINGS
PROSPERITY177. Earthly prosperity is 'just a little more'. But heavenly prosperity is learning to be content with what the Lord has given.
382. There is no absolute measure of prosperity for our perception of it relates to what we see others have. I wonder what God sees?
383. The problem with prosperity is that we all want to own God's 'cattle on a thousand hills' personally.
811. In the Old Testament, success is measured by prosperity, in the New, by sacrifice. Many believers prefer to live in the past!
812. May I learn to rest content with my 'daily bread'.
813. There is no problem with prosperity, only our definition of it.
814. In the Old Testament, prosperity is provision for the future, in the New, sufficiency for today.
815. Worldly provision comes through people, godly provision through the Providor, for whom people are but one resource.
816. Jesus redefined prosperity from wealth for the future to provision for today.
1223. The curse of prosperity is its uncanny ability to draw our attention away from God.
1224. For most, prosperity is a magnet that attracts people away from its source.
1225. Prosperity comes, prosperity goes, but God's provision is eternal life.
1226. Prosperity is human indulgence, sacrifice, a godly command.
1227. Faith is of more value in affliction than in prosperity.
1228. A general rule in God's economy is that faith grows through affliction, but dies with prosperity.
1229. Want to build your faith? Then ask God for affliction, not prosperity. Not surprising there is so little faith today!
1230. It is an enigma to me to see the carparks at prosperity preacher's meetings full of old jalopies!
1231. History proves that God's kingdom grows faster through affliction than prosperity.

CRANWELL'S CARTOON
21 So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and closed up the place with flesh. 22 Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.
23 The man said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’ for she was taken out of man.†(Genesis 2:21-23)

A REVELATION OF....... THE TABERNACLE OF DAVID - Part 4OBEDIENCE IS BLESSED!
In our human way of thinking we relate blessings to material prosperity.
In the Old Testament too, blessing was reflected in worldly goods, the archetype being seen in the wealth of Solomon.

501. SWIM?
A learned Rabbi took a philosophy professor (an atheist at that) out fishing on a large lake. As they drifted on the still lake, the philosopher accidentally dropped an oar and watched it float away. The Rabbi stepped out of the boat, walked across the water to the oar, grabbed it and walked back to the boat.
The next day at the university, a colleague asked the philosopher if he had enjoyed fishing with the Rabbi. "It was okay, but would you believe that guy can't swim?"

THE FATHERLESS GENERATION
Newman Weekly is a weekly article by Dr Muriel Newman of the New Zealand Centre for Political Debate, a web-based forum at www.nzcpd.com for the lively and dynamic exchange of political ideas. This week, concerns over youth gangs and violence have hit the headlines. It is a problem that can be found to a greater or lesser degree in many towns and cities throughout the country.
The debate over what can be done has ranged widely from more council amenities for young people, making education more relevant and improving after-school activities, to more pro-active truancy monitoring, more effective parenting, greater coordination between social agencies, and better policing.
While suggestions on what should be done to improve the situation have been free flowing, little has been said about the underlying causes of the problem. The reason is that it is no longer considered to be politically correct to discuss issues relating to personal responsibility, the home and the family. Yet the reality is that these are at the heart of the problem: children raised in stable, loving families, are more likely to join sports teams, rather than gangs.
Any discussion with police or those who work with troubled youth will quickly identify that the largest proportion of them come from homes where their biological father is absent: children raised in families without a father, where there is inadequate supervision and a lack of socialisation, are far more likely to become involved in anti-social behaviour and crime, than those raised with a dad.
Chief Youth Court Judge, Andrew Beecroft, in a speech at Parliament a few years ago identified six characteristics of serious youth offenders: “85 percent are male, the majority have no contact with their father, 80 percent do not go to school and have chronic drug or alcohol addictions, most have psychological or psychiatric issues, and 50 percent – up to 90 percent in some courts – are Maoriâ€.
He explained that many of these boys have no adult male role model: “14, 15, and 16 year-old boys seek out role models like ‘heat seeking missiles’. It’s either the leader of the Mongrel Mob or it’s a sports coach or it’s Dad. But an overwhelming majority of boys who I see in the Youth Court have lost contact with their father. …What I’m saying is that I’m dealing in the Youth Court with boys for whom their Dad is simply not there, never has been, gone, vanished and disappearedâ€.
Judge Beecroft went on to say: “…every single young boy that we have dealt with has been abused as a childâ€.

VICTORY!
The inspiration for the first two parts of this poem came from a cross-island trek Kathyand I went on when we were staying on the beautiful Island of Rarotonga, in the Cook
Islands. For those who don’t know, The Cooks are situated around the Tropic of Capricorn
in the Pacific Ocean. A great place to visit! The last part is based loosely on the book
of Revelation, Chapters 21 and 22, the biblical promise of what is to come. Hope it is
both enjoyable and challenging to you. Of course it is just verse, so is not all strictly
theologically accurate! Called poetic licence! (Part 3 of 9)
This week we get to the top of the mountain!
VICTORY!
THE MOUNTAIN CLIMB (continued)
At the top of the mountain the scenery did change,
The summit now in view, well within our range,
Grasses indeed, now the landscape predominate,
Sprinkled about with wild orchids, looking great.
At the summit we rest, our faces all aglow,
We have made it! No more climbing to go!
We thank our guide Jesus, for taking us right up there,
But our own efforts too, we are wanting to compare.
Jesus just looked at us with a wry grin on his face,
"How little they know, thinking they set the pace."
But he says nothing, for we’re still learning the way,
"Let’s go down to the waterfall’, then see what they say.
So down the mountain towards the waterfall we wander,
Satisfied with what we had done, but our legs do wonder!
For we have reached our goal, or so we thought,
In the ecstasy of our achievement, we are caught.
On the way down, we all get a little careless,
Tripping over a stump, my side now a mess,
Suddenly learning that a journey isn’t complete,
Until you are safely back, sitting in the bus seat!
More carefully now, we wend our way down,
Conscious of our need, to get back to town,
To have a shower, to again get clean,
Jesus grinned, this he had often seen.
For he did, and still does, know more than we,
Some of us by now, understanding him you see,
Could glean that he has more surprises in store,
For those who want to move on, who desire more.
(To be continued next week)

A DAVID MUSING
Yesterday we received two unexpected prophecies, both indicating that June would be a month of spiritual fulfilment for us. After a couple of months of difficult times, this would be truly appreciated!God is good. He reprimands us at times, and then provides encouragement when we need it, as any good father would.
Thank you Lord.
Today in New Zealand is a Public Holiday for the Queen's Birthday. For we are a part of the British Commonwealth. Interestingly, it is neither Queen Elizabeth II's actual birthday (She was 80 on 21 April 2006) nor do all Commonwealth countries celebrate it on the same day. In Australia it is celebrated next Monday!
Much like our religious holidays of Christmas and Easter, celebrated at different times by different groups. May we not forget that they are symbolic occasions only. Now, the Jewish Feasts? That is another story.......
In the meantime we will just enjoy (part of) a day off!
So until next week...
MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOU BLESS GOD.

Today's 'Word Puzzle' Answer: GUNSHIP
TODAY'S 'DO YOU KNOW?' ANSWER: c. A group of Jewish writings that were included in some versions of Jewish scripture, but were excluded from the official canon of Judaism.
The Apocrypha is a group of 15 late Old Testament books written during the period 170 B.C. to 70 A.D. These Jewish books were included in many versions of the Septuagint (a Greek translation of the Old Testament) in circulation as the New Testament was being formed, but were excluded from the official canon of Judaism, established about 100 A.D.
