WHOSE CHURCH IS IT ANYWAY? Part 23
OTHER PROMINENT LEADERS
PHOEBE PALMER (1807-1874) The 19th century Holiness movement began in the Methodist Church, as they sought to revive the religious fervour of the 1700's and John Wesley's teaching of a 'second work of grace' in the believer. While other words were used to describe this teaching in the various denominations to which the movement spread, it was what we now know as the baptism of the Holy Spirit.
Phoebe Palmer was the most prominent and influential leader of this movement. The wife of a prominent New York physician, Dr Walter Palmer, she was a Methodist lay person. While never ordained, she has been widely regarded as the most influential female theologian ever.
In 1840, she became the leader of the 'Tuesday Meeting for the Promotion of Holiness'. Meetings were held in the Palmer's spacious parlour, and attended by 4 Methodist bishops and other leaders from the Methodists and other denominations. Phoebe wrote 3 books and edited and published the most influential Holiness periodical of the era, "The Guide to Holiness'.
She travelled widely throughout the US, Canada and Britain, in later times accompanied by her husband.
From England, Phoebe reported, "the Lord was saving the people by scores daily." and that "now the entire (Newcastle) community seems ready to acknowledge its [the revival's] power." There was such a presence of God that "people are weeping all over the house" and "the power of God is sensibly felt to be present to heal." She also spoke of people who "felt the girdings of almighty power in an unusual manner" and of "tokens of divine presence" among them.
Phoebe understood this as "a resuscitation of primitive Christianity and primitive Methodism."
Speaking in tongues occurred also. In a series of afternoon meetings in England, the emphasis was to be on "the full baptism of the Holy Spirit as received by the one hundred and twenty disciples on the day of Pentecost." At another time, "the baptism of fire descended; and, as in the early days of Christianity, utterance as a restraining gift was also given." And again, a local preacher came forward and received "the tongue of fire." then "spoke as the Spirit gave utterance."
Through Phoebe Palmer's influence, Pentecostal language came to replace Wesleyan terminology in describing the second blessing. Sanctification became the baptism of the Holy Ghost and instead of cleansing from sin, the blessing now became endowment of power. Critically, these modern Pentecostal/Charismatic terms have lost much of the spiritual depth of meaning of the original ones, and the godly requirement to live a holy life has been lost to an undue emphasis on speaking in tongues and power, without evidence of a changed life, as Phoebe Palmer pronounced.
CHARLES FINNEY (1792-1873) A lawyer, Finney was converted at age 29, firstly aligning himself with the Presbyterian, then later, the Congregational Church.
A powerful, logical preacher, his innovations included the Altar Call and the Anxious Seat.
At the time of his conversion, Finney had an experience that he later identified as the baptism in the Holy Spirit, recalling that he "wept aloud with joy and love" and "literally bellowed out the unutterable gushings of my soul," a likely reference to speaking in tongues.
While Finney didn't pray for the sick, healings occurred. For example an unconverted lady who was not expected to live the night was prayed for intensely, and Finney experienced a settled peace in his mind. The next day Finney told her husband....
"Brother W_______, she will not die with this sickness; you may rely upon it. And she will never die in her sins."
The woman recovered and accepted the Lord as her Saviour.
Spiritual manifestations were common at his meetings. At a meeting in Rome, New York, he heard the sobs and sighs of the people as he closed in prayer.
At this very moment a young man by the name of W_______, a clerk in Mr. H_______'s store, being one of the first young men in the place, so nearly fainted, that he fell upon some young men who stood near him; and they all of them partially swooned away, and fell together.
Finney's preaching affected entire cities. Charles P. Bush, a leading New York pastor reported.....
The whole community was stirred. Religion was the topic of conversation in the house, in the shop, in the office and on the street. The only theater in the city was converted into a livery stable; the only circus into a soap and candle factory. Grog shops were closed; the Sabbath was honored; the sanctuaries were thronged with happy worshippers; a new impulse was given to every philanthropic enterprise; the fountains of benevolence were opened, and men lived to good.
In 1835 Finney became the professor of systematic theology at the new Oberlin College in Ohio. Here, he and Asa Mahan, the first president, developed the 'Oberlin Theology', referring to the second blessing as the baptism of the Holy Spirit. This was identified as an empowerment for service, rather than a cleansing from original sin. Finney commented about the lack of this in a certain pastor's life and ministry.....
He had fallen short of receiving the baptism of the Holy Ghost which is indispensable to ministerial success. When Christ commissioned his apostles to go and preach, he told them to abide at Jerusalem till they were endued with power from on high. This power, as everyone knows, was the baptism of the Holy Ghost poured out upon them on the day of Pentecost. This was an indispensable qualification for success in ministry.
Finney's methods and teachings played a major role in the preparation for what was to come in the 20th century.
Many of the influential people we have looked at over this period are not known for their openness to spiritual gifts, but as we have seen, and will continue to see today, they did experience the leading of the Holy Spirit in their lives, so preparing the way for the Holy Spirit outpouring of the early 20th century.

FROM THE WORD
THE WORDS OF JESUS
May we hear what the Lord is saying to us.....
The Widow’s Mite (Mark 12:41-4, Luke 21:1-4)
Donated to the Temple.
“I tell you the truth: this poor widow has put in more than all the rest together. All of them gave from their wealth what they had, but she gave from her poverty what she didn’t have. She put in all she had to live on.”
Disciples Admire the Temple (Matthew 24:1-2, Mark 13:1-2, Luke 21:5-6)
“You see all these buildings? I tell you the truth: there won’t be one stone left upon another. Every last one will come crashing down!”
The Four Fishermen Disciples Ask Jesus (Matthew 24:3-35, Mark 13:3-31, Luke 21:7-31)
About the signs of the end of the age.
“Make sure no one misleads you,” “Many will come claiming to be me, saying, ‘I’m the Messiah,’ and they will deceive many people. You’ll hear about wars, and rumors about wars, but don’t be anxious. These things have to happen, but this isn’t the end. Nations will attack other nations, and kingdoms will fight against other kingdoms. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places, 8but all these things are just the beginnings of birth pains.
“Then they will arrest you, they will persecute you, and they will kill you. All people will hate you because of me. At that time many believers will give up believing. They will betray one another and hate one another. Many false prophets will come and deceive many people. The increasing evil will lead the love of many to grow cold, but those who hold out to the end will be saved. The good news of the kingdom will be proclaimed around the whole world so everyone will be able to hear it, and then the end will come. So when you see the ‘evil that defiles’ standing in the holy place that the prophet Daniel spoke about (those who read this please consider carefully), then the people living in Judea should run away to the mountains. Anyone who is on the housetop must not go down and fetch what’s in the house. Anyone who is out in the fields must not go back to get a coat. How awful it will be for those who are pregnant, and those who are nursing babies at that time! Pray that you don’t have to run away in winter, or on the Sabbath day. For at that time there will be terrible persecution—more terrible than anything that has happened from the beginning of the world up till now, and won’t ever happen again. Unless those days are cut short, nobody will be saved, but for the sake of the chosen those days will be cut short.
“So if anyone tells you, ‘Look, here’s the Messiah,’ or, ‘There he is,’ don’t believe it. For false messiahs will appear, and false prophets too, and they will perform incredible signs and miracles in order to deceive the chosen, if that were possible. Notice that I’ve told you this before it even happens. So if they tell you, ‘Look, he’s out in the desert,’ don’t go looking there; or if they say, ‘Look, he’s secretly here,’ don’t believe it. For the coming of the Son of man will be like the lightning that flashes brightly from east to west. Vultures gather where the carcass is.’
“But right after those days of persecution the sun will be darkened, the moon will not shine, the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of heaven will be shaken. Then the sign of the Son of man will appear in heaven, and all the peoples of the earth will mourn. They will see the Son of man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and in brilliant glory. With a blast from a trumpet he will send his angels to gather his chosen ones from every place, from one end of heaven and earth to the other.
“Learn an illustration from the fig tree. When its shoots become tender and leaves begin to sprout, you know that summer is coming. In the same way when you see all these things happening, you know that his coming is near, in fact it’s right at the door! I tell you the truth: this generation won’t pass away until all these things have happened. Heaven and earth may pass away, but my words won’t pass away.

Join the many who have downloaded the 'The Words of Jesus'. I am sure you will be blessed by it, as I have been.
One key element here is the setting out in chronological order (as far as it is possible to do so) our Lord's words drawn from all the Gospels, and the elimination of repetition between Gospels.
You may be surprised by the different perspective this presentation gives you both in understanding of His life and ministry, and in achieving a closer relationship with Him.

DAVID'S DOODLINGS
315. In nature, human growth occurs naturally. We expect the same in the Spiritual and get offended when others grow more quickly than us.
316. Human growth is measured in height, girth and wrinkles, spiritual growth by the 'fruit of the Spirit.' Often we confuse the two.
987. To see the view we must first climb the mountain.
988. Growing pains happen in the spiritual as well as the natural.
989. To grow in our God we must first shrink in our self.
990. 'Going down' is the secret to 'growing up' in God.
991. Without life's valleys we wouldn't truly appreciate the mountain tops.
992. 'No gain without pain' is truly also the dictum of the race of life.
993. The race of life goes round many corners.
994. The race of life is held on a cross country course, not on a cinder track.
995. Growth in God is in spurts, same as in the body. They are normally both challenging and satisfying at the same time.
1000. It's in the valleys of life we develop the strength needed to scale the mountain tops.

LAUGHING AT OURSELVES
***Blessed are those who can laugh at themselves for they shall never cease to be amused***
*** Those who can't laugh at themselves leave the job to others. ***
84. Sixteen!
A little boy was attending his first wedding. After the service, his cousin asked him, "How many women can a man marry?"
"Sixteen," the boy responded.
His cousin was amazed that he had an answer so quickly. "How do you know that?"
"Easy," the little boy said. "All you have to do is add it up, like the Bishop said: 4 better, 4 worse, 4 richer, 4 poorer."
QWIK QWIP: “Are you wrinkled with burden? Come to the church for a face-lift.”
85. Modern Idiom
A 6-year-old was overheard reciting the Lord's Prayer at a church service: "And forgive us our trash passes, as we forgive those who passed trash against us."
86. A Price For Everything
A little girl became restless as the preacher's sermon dragged on and on. Finally, she leaned over to her mother and whispered, "Mummy, if we give him the money now, will he let us go?"
A DAVID MUSING
Doing something new is exciting (for me at least) and stretching of the old brain cells.
Certainly has been the case over the past few days, when we have recorded our first video for His KINGDOM EYE AND GENERAL HOSPITAL project.
Shot it twice, once with one phone camera, then a day or so later, with two.
Edited it, with the help of Daniel 'Einstein' - actually I watched while he did it!
Now that should be the end! But no! Uploading was a challenge that took 2 days to sort out.
But the satisfaction was worthwhile, and also the knowledge we can do it both better and faster next time.
Have a look at the video at on Youtube at KINGDOM EYE AND GENERAL HOSPITAL
Life in Jesus is much the same.
The first time we step out into a new dimension of faith, it can be a challenge. But shortly, it will become normal - and then we can step out again!
Until next week.......
MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOU BLESS GOD.
His servant and yours
David Tait
