THINKING GREEK OR HEBREW? continues
We are looking at the differences between the Jewish (Eastern) and Greek (Western) ways of thinking, so that we can better understand the ways and teachings of Jesus. (See the last 38 weeks issues of PGIM!)SUMMARY
5. IMPORTANCE OF COMMUNITY - THE CALL TO UNITY
As we have learned together about the cultural differences between East and West, a key difference has been the emphasis upon the individual in the Western world, while in Eastern culture, the greater good of the group, the family, the nation, took precedence over the individual.
Put succinctly, we promote the 'rights' (of the individual), whereas Eastern cultures emphasize 'obligations' (to the community).
It is true that, under the New Covenant, salvation has become a decision of the individual.....
15 He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation. 16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. (Mark 16:15-16)
.....but it also says that all Israel will be finally also be saved.....
All Israel Will Be Saved
25 I do not want you to be ignorant of this mystery, brothers, so that you may not be conceited: Israel has experienced a hardening in part until the full number of the Gentiles has come in. 26 And so all Israel will be saved, as it is written: “The deliverer will come from Zion; he will turn godlessness away from Jacob. 27 And this is my covenant with them when I take away their sins.†(Romans 11:25-7)
This indeed, as it says, is a mystery to us, with our Western mindset. But it will make sense to the Jews, for it is the way God has dealt with them in the past, as prophesied through Isaiah.....
15 Truly you are a God who hides himself, O God and Savior of Israel. 16 All the makers of idols will be put to shame and disgraced; they will go off into disgrace together. 17 But Israel will be saved by the LORD with an everlasting salvation; you will never be put to shame or disgraced, to ages everlasting. (Isaiah 45:15-17)
Unity is a concept that we, in the West, do not truly understand. For us, unity involves full agreement on every aspect of the area of unity we are considering. For example, take the supporters of a team at a football match. They are united in the support of their team. As are, of course, the supporters of the opposing team!
Unfortunately however, this unity does not exist in the ultimate winning team of all - the 'Jesus Joy Jumpers'! See, we cant even agree on the name - for we don't jump for joy in our church! How unseemly! How sad, actually! For if we put two Christian theologians together, we will likely end up with 3 opinions! Opinions that have divided the church into over 30,000 denominations and groupings. Perhaps a lot more. Sadly, what divides is greater than that which unites.
Jews too, have many differing opinions. Paul knew how to exploit this.....
6 Then Paul, knowing that some of them were Sadducees and the others Pharisees, called out in the Sanhedrin, “My brothers, I am a Pharisee, the son of a Pharisee. I stand on trial because of my hope in the resurrection of the dead.†7 When he said this, a dispute broke out between the Pharisees and the Sadducees, and the assembly was divided. 8 (The Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, and that there are neither angels nor spirits, but the Pharisees acknowledge them all.) (Acts 23:6-8)
However, when it comes to the crunch, as is well illustrated in Israel today, if the nation is threatened, the people come together as one.
In the Old Testament, when the people agreed and operated as one, the Lord was with them.....
10 The couriers went from town to town in Ephraim and Manasseh, as far as Zebulun, but the people scorned and ridiculed them. 11 Nevertheless, some men of Asher, Manasseh and Zebulun humbled themselves and went to Jerusalem. 12 Also in Judah the hand of God was on the people to give them unity of mind to carry out what the king and his officials had ordered, following the word of the LORD. 13 A very large crowd of people assembled in Jerusalem to celebrate the Feast of Unleavened Bread in the second month. 14 They removed the altars in Jerusalem and cleared away the incense altars and threw them into the Kidron Valley.......... 26 There was great joy in Jerusalem, for since the days of Solomon son of David king of Israel there had been nothing like this in Jerusalem. 27 The priests and the Levites stood to bless the people, and God heard them, for their prayer reached heaven, his holy dwelling place. (2 Chronicles 30:10-14, 26-27)
We too are called to unity in Jesus.....
Jesus Prays for All Believers
20 “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, 21 that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22 I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one: 23 I in them and you in me. May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. (John 17:20-23)
I am certain, that next to lost souls, the thing that upsets the Lord most are the divisions amongst His people. His appointed leaders prime function is to bring unity of faith to His people.....
11 It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, 12 to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. (Ephesians 4:11-13)
May we put aside our differences and learn to love and support each other as we are instructed to do.....
12 Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 13 Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. 14 And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. (Colossians 3:12-14)
Amen.

FROM THE WORD
All Israel Will Be Saved"I do not want you to be ignorant of this mystery, brothers, so that you may not be conceited: Israel has experienced a hardening in part until the full number of the Gentiles has come in. And so all Israel will be saved, as it is written: “The deliverer will come from Zion; he will turn godlessness away from Jacob. And this is my covenant with them when I take away their sins.†As far as the gospel is concerned, they are enemies on your account; but as far as election is concerned, they are loved on account of the patriarchs, for God’s gifts and his call are irrevocable. Just as you who were at one time disobedient to God have now received mercy as a result of their disobedience, so they too have now become disobedient in order that they too may now receive mercy as a result of God’s mercy to you. For God has bound all men over to disobedience so that he may have mercy on them all." (Romans 11:25-32)
"The couriers went from town to town in Ephraim and Manasseh, as far as Zebulun, but the people scorned and ridiculed them. Nevertheless, some men of Asher, Manasseh and Zebulun humbled themselves and went to Jerusalem. Also in Judah the hand of God was on the people to give them unity of mind to carry out what the king and his officials had ordered, following the word of the LORD. A very large crowd of people assembled in Jerusalem to celebrate the Feast of Unleavened Bread in the second month. They removed the altars in Jerusalem and cleared away the incense altars and threw them into the Kidron Valley. They slaughtered the Passover lamb on the fourteenth day of the second month. The priests and the Levites were ashamed and consecrated themselves and brought burnt offerings to the temple of the LORD. Then they took up their regular positions as prescribed in the Law of Moses the man of God. The priests sprinkled the blood handed to them by the Levites. Since many in the crowd had not consecrated themselves, the Levites had to kill the Passover lambs for all those who were not ceremonially clean and could not consecrate their lambs to the LORD. Although most of the many people who came from Ephraim, Manasseh, Issachar and Zebulun had not purified themselves, yet they ate the Passover, contrary to what was written. But Hezekiah prayed for them, saying, “May the LORD, who is good, pardon everyone who sets his heart on seeking God—the LORD, the God of his fathers—even if he is not clean according to the rules of the sanctuary.†And the LORD heard Hezekiah and healed the people. The Israelites who were present in Jerusalem celebrated the Feast of Unleavened Bread for seven days with great rejoicing, while the Levites and priests sang to the LORD every day, accompanied by the LORD’s instruments of praise. Hezekiah spoke encouragingly to all the Levites, who showed good understanding of the service of the LORD. For the seven days they ate their assigned portion and offered fellowship offerings and praised the LORD, the God of their fathers. The whole assembly then agreed to celebrate the festival seven more days; so for another seven days they celebrated joyfully. Hezekiah king of Judah provided a thousand bulls and seven thousand sheep and goats for the assembly, and the officials provided them with a thousand bulls and ten thousand sheep and goats. A great number of priests consecrated themselves. The entire assembly of Judah rejoiced, along with the priests and Levites and all who had assembled from Israel, including the aliens who had come from Israel and those who lived in Judah. There was great joy in Jerusalem, for since the days of Solomon son of David king of Israel there had been nothing like this in Jerusalem. The priests and the Levites stood to bless the people, and God heard them, for their prayer reached heaven, his holy dwelling place." (2 Chronicles 30:10-27)

May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. “Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world. “Righteous Father, though the world does not know you, I know you, and they know that you have sent me. I have made you known to them, and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them.â€" (John 17:20-26)

554. DO UNTO OTHERS
The pastor’s car stalled at a stoplight. He tried to get it started, but nothing. The light turned green, and there he sat, frustrated and embarrassed, holding up traffic. The car behind could have gone around, but instead the driver added to his anguish by laying on the horn.
After another desperate attempt to get the car started, he got out and walked back to the honker. The man rolled down his window in surprise.
“Tell you what,†the pastor said. “You go start my car, and I’ll sit back here and honk the horn for you!â€

NDOP Wembley Submerged By Waves of Prayer and Praise
By Peter WoodingEurope Bureau Chief for ASSIST News Service
LONDON, ENGLAND (ANS) -- Wembley stadium was overtaken by a wave of prayer and praise when over 32,000 gathered for the National Day of Prayer and Worship on Saturday September 29th.
Youth being commissioned to carry baton of prayer (photo by www.jordanmary.com)
Tens of thousands more were able to join the day through live broadcasts and streams via GOD TV, Revelation TV, OHTV, Premier Radio and UCB.
During one of the key moments of the day as 300 young Christians in red hoodies were being commissioned to carry on the baton of prayer into the next generation, a Mexican wave of united prayer engulfed the whole stadium as tens of thousands were believing for a new wave of revival to hit the UK.
The day carried the theme of the Lord's Prayer and began with a time of thanksgiving for the fulfilment of a 17 year old Wembley vision, the Diamond Jubilee, the Olympics, More Than Gold and for Government.
Leaders on stage pray for the nation and unity (photo by Steve Fanstone)
Then many key leaders from different denominations and organisations took to the stage to lead prayers for the nation and unity.
Later Samaritan's Purse UK Executive Director Simon Barrington prayed for the world's neediest children, after a touching performance by a children's choir, while Tearfund's Matthew Frost then led a time of prayer for the one billion people going hungry all over the globe.
There was such a wave of praise and worship throughout the day from a wide variety of artists including Remanente, Sound of Wales, Tim Hughes, Noel Robinson, Matt Redman, Guvna B, Hillsong, LZ7, Graham Kendrick, Lara Martin, and the NDOP Mass Choir.
Also prayers were said for the global church and more locally for some very new and exciting community prayer and outreach initiatives in the UK including Neighbourhood Prayer Network, Hope 2014 and Crossing London - Mission 2013.
That carnival atmosphere combined with the fantastic weather even greeted the thousands pouring into the stadium along Wembley Way with bright and colourful exhibitions and market stalls. Also before the day began, in an unprecedented display of unity 1050 leaders gathered in the Bobby Moore Suite for a lunch reception.
Jonathan Oloyede, the NDOP Convener gave a mandate for everyone to take the baton of prayer back to their streets, towns, cities and stadiums. He urged all Christians across the British Isles to join the dots in prayer and mission.
NDOP organisers are hoping that Wembley 2012 will be a catalyst to help regional gatherings of prayer emerge in the months to come as well as support other stadium events.
To facilitate this NDOP is producing a number of resources including a Legacy DVD coming out soon, and in partnership with Neighbourhood Prayer Network a Wembley legacy book now available called "Neighbours, Transform Your Street". For more information go to: www.neighbourhoodprayer.net

A DAVID MUSING
Last week, for the first time in five months the sales figures of our group of five charity shops showed an increase over the same week last year. It was unexpected - and a great relief! For all the staff and volunteers put in a huge effort to make it work, to help our local communities with good value goods, and support the work of World Vision overseas, amongst the poor. We are looking to have another good week this week too! An encouragement to us all!Life in Jesus can be much the same at times. A struggle. Seemingly going backwards. Everything is an effort. No response from those we try to help. No encouragement. We lose hope.
Then, all of a sudden, something good happens! Yes, Jesus! Our hope is restored! Our faith strengthened! We are back on track! Thank you Jesus!
The Bible calls us to persevere through the difficult times. For it promises that, if we follow Jesus with all of our being, we will achieve the victory - over the world, over evil, and finally, over death.
May we learn to become, through our trials and tribulations, more like Jesus. For His sacrifice, on Calvary's hill, places our sacrifices in perspective. And the victory of His resurrection is a promise that we too, will come through our troubles to reign victorious with Him. Thank you Lord!
Until next week.....
MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOU BLESS GOD
His servant and yours
