CHRISTIANITY - A CULTURE, ORGANISATION, OR A RELATIONSHIP?
It is easy to criticize the church and its religious ways, but the real question is 'what do we do about it?' That is the challenge that we as God's disciples face today. Over these 12 weeks we are looking at practical ways God is calling His church, you and me, and the body corporate, to change today. These are taken from my publication A REVELATION OF……. GOD'S CALL TO HIS CHURCH, published 10 years ago. I do not pretend that the changes are easy, but they are necessary for God's kingdom to be established on the earth in preparation for the return of Jesus. Let's continue.....1: FROM MARTHA TO MARY
2: FROM GREEK TO HEBREW
3: FROM REVIVAL TO HABITATION
4: FROM KINGSHIP TO SERVANTHOOD
5: FROM RECEIVING TO GIVING
6: FROM SONG TO HEART WORSHIP
7: TO CHANGE FOCUS FROM US TO HIM
8: FROM NUMBERS TO DISCIPLESHIP
9: FROM BUILDINGS TO COMMUNITY
10: FROM SERVING PROGRAMMES TO MEETING INDIVIDUAL NEEDS
11: FROM PRIESTLY FOCUS TO PERSONAL INVOLVEMENT
12: FROM MATERIALISM TO SPIRITUALITY
As we conclude our study of God's call upon the church today, we will look at a final, difficult area of church life. The area of a Christians 'right' to material wellbeing, epitomised in the closely related 'name it and claim it' and 'prosperity' doctrines.
One thing I have noticed when travelling around the world, is the makeup of congregations in prosperity teaching churches. It would be reasonable to assume, if the teaching was effective, that the people attending would be of above average wealth for the community in which they live. For prosperity is relative. What is considered poverty in New Zealand is regarded as wealth in Africa. Yet, whether in the USA or the heart of Africa, the congregations of prosperity preachers are invariably poorer than the community average. Why? The teaching appeals to the poor, those who see this as a way out of their financial disadvantage. It is noticeable too, invariably, that the preachers are rich.
But what does the Bible say? Much of our confusion comes because we fail to understand the fundamental difference in the manifestation of God's blessing between the Old and the New Covenants.
The Old Testament was based in the natural. Ongoing physical sacrifices of animals were required for forgiveness of sin, while wealth and the possession of land measured blessing. The glory days of God's blessing of Israel were found in the reign of King Solomon. Unfortunately however, In spite of being the world's wisest man, Solomon's character was unable to resist the temptations wealth brings. A sobering warning to us all! From the final part of Solomon's reign onwards, it was all downhill for the Jews.
Jesus came to change the system. Believers accept with gratitude the incredible final sacrifice Jesus made on the cross and are gladly prepared to spiritually apply the power of His blood for the forgiveness of sin. For we have read in Hebrews:
8 First he said, “Sacrifices and offerings, burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not desire, nor were you pleased with them†(although the law required them to be made). 9 Then he said, “Here I am, I have come to do your will.†He sets aside the first to establish the second. 10 And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. (Hebrews 10:8-10)
Logic would dictate that if the sacrifice were changed from physical to spiritual, blessings also, would take a new form. And they do. Solomon failed through lack of character. New Testament blessings therefore, are focused around character building, rather than the acquisition of wealth. This is epitomised by the 'Sermon on the Mount.'
3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. 5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. 6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. 7 Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. 8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. 9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God. (Matthew 5:3-9)
In fact, rather than receiving a promise of the comfort of wealth, we are promised blessings for pain and suffering! The sermon continues:
10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. (Matthew 5:10-11)
Sobering, isn't it?
Much of the New Testament deals with the subject of wealth. But only in 1 or possibly 2 places, in a positive light. Probably the most hard-hitting passage is about the Rich Young Ruler.
22 When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth. 23 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “I tell you the truth, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. 24 Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.†(Matthew 19:22-24)
Of course, everything is possible in God, but this was a huge warning to the Jews (and us!) for they hankered for the return of the days of King Solomon.
The lifestyle Jesus modeled was one of 'daily provision', as expressed in the Lord's prayer. Give us today our daily bread.
His emphasis was on seeking spiritual understanding with its associated blessings:
31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. (Matthew 6:31-4)
Yes, Jesus came with a new covenant. One based on the spiritual 'kingdom of God'. Today God is calling on us to put aside the seductive temptations of materialism and embrace principles of kingdom living. Jesus died, not that we might become wealthy in the world, but to build spiritual treasure in heaven.
32 “Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom. 33 Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will not be exhausted, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. 34 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. (Luke 12:32-34)
There will come a time when the physical and the spiritual will be reunited as it was in the Garden before Adam and Eve sinned. But that is another story, one dependent upon the spiritual development of our character to become like Jesus.
PRINCIPLE 12: God is calling His people to change focus from the material to the spiritual.
DAVID'S DECLARATION: "This time, God, I understand. For I have been a millionaire twice and bankrupt twice and know in which state I come closer to you. And recently, you called on us to give away our protective 'nest-egg', Lord. I am learning not to worry about tomorrow - well, most of the time!"

FROM THE WORD
THE WORDS OF JESUSMay we hear what the Lord is saying to us.
Parable of the Tenants (Matthew 21:33-46, Mark 12:1-12, Luke 20:9-18)
A parable spoken against the chief priests and Pharisees.
“Here’s another illustration. There once was a man, a landowner, who planted a vineyard. He put a fence around it, made a winepress, and built a watchtower. He rented it to some tenant farmers, and then left to go to a different country. At harvest time, he sent his servants to the farmers to collect the fruit that belonged to him. But the farmers attacked his servants They beat one, killed another, and stoned another. So he sent more servants, but the farmers did the same things to them. So then he sent his son. ‘They will respect my son,’ he told himself. But the farmers, when they saw the son, said to each other, ‘Here’s the heir! Come on! Let’s kill him so we can take his inheritance!’ They grabbed him, threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him. When the vineyard owner returns, what will he do to those farmers?â€
Kill them and give the farm to others, the Pharisees replied.
“So haven’t you read the Scriptures?†“‘The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone. The Lord has done this, and it is wonderful in our eyes.’ That’s why I’m telling you that the kingdom of God will be taken away from you. It will be given to a people who produce the right kind of fruit. Anyone who falls on this stone will be broken, but it will completely crush anyone it falls upon.â€
Parable of the Wedding Feast (Matthew 22:1-14)
“The kingdom of heaven is like a king who organized a wedding celebration for his son,†Jesus explained. “He sent out his servants to everyone who was invited to the wedding to tell them to come, but they refused. So he sent out more servants, with the instructions, ‘Tell those who are invited, “I’ve prepared the wedding banquet. The bulls and fattened calves have been killed—everything’s ready. So come to the wedding!â€â€™â€
“But they ignored the invitation and left. One went to his fields; another to take care of his business. The rest grabbed the king’s servants, mistreated them, and killed them. The king became furious. He sent his soldiers to destroy those murderers and burn down their town.
“Then the king said to his servants, ‘The wedding banquet is ready, but those who were invited didn’t deserve to attend. Go into the streets and invite everyone you find to come to the wedding.’ So the servants went out into the streets and brought back everyone they could find, both the good and the bad. The wedding hall was full.
“But when the king came in to see the guests, he noticed a man who didn’t have a wedding robe on. He asked him, ‘My friend, how did you get in here without a wedding robe?’ The man had nothing to say. Then the king told his servants, ‘Bind his hands and feet, and throw him out into the dark, where there’ll be crying and grinding of teeth.’ “For many are invited, but few are chosen.â€

302. MISTAKEN EMAIL
It is wise to remember how easily this wonderful e-mail technology can be misused, sometimes unintentionally, with serious consequences. Consider the case of the Illinois man who left the snow-filled streets of Chicago for a vacation in Florida. His wife was on a business trip and was planning to meet him there the next day. When he reached his hotel, he decided to send his wife a quick e-mail. Unable to find the scrap of paper on which he had written her e-mail address, he did his best to type it in from memory.
Unfortunately, he missed one letter, and his note was directed instead to an elderly preacher's wife, whose husband had passed away only the day before. When the grieving widow checked her e-mail, she took one look at the monitor, let out a piercing scream, and fell to the floor in a dead faint. At the sound, her family rushed into the room and saw this note on the screen:
Dearest Wife,
Just got checked in. Everything prepared for your arrival tomorrow.
P.S. Sure is hot down here!

"Guilty."
"That'll be fifty dollars and a warning from the court." Katz stepped down and the two judges shook hands and changed places. "How do you plead?" asked Tyler.
"Guilty."
Tyler reflected for a moment. "These reckless driving cases are becoming all too common of late," he pointed out. "In fact, this is the second such incident in the last quarter hour. That'll be two hundred dollars and ten days in jail."

Israeli and Egyptian ministers meet for first time in years
By HERB KEINON03/31/2016
Discussion focused on various regional issues, including the possibility of Israel supplying Egypt with natural gas.
National Infrastructure, Energy and Water Minister Yuval Steinitz met in Washington on Thursday with Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry for the first meeting between ministers of the two countries in a number of years.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the Nuclear Security Summit being held in the White House.
According to Steinitz's office, the discussion focused on various regional issues, the possibility of Israel supplying Egypt with natural gas, and international cooperation in preventing nuclear terrorism.
Israel's delegation to the summit also included the head of the Israel Atomic Energy Commission, Zeev Snir; the deputy head of the National Security Council, Yaakov Nagel; and representatives from the Foreign Ministry.
US President Barack Obama’s original goal for the 2016 Nuclear Security Summit – the fourth in a series of confabs meant to address what he described, in 2009, as the “most immediate and extreme threat to global security†– was for global leaders to step back and assess the progress they have made to secure existing stockpiles.
But the summit has adopted a sense of urgency, as the White House believes Islamic State is intent on acquiring radioactive material to conduct a nuclear terrorist attack.
After its operatives were found last week to have been conducting surveillance on Belgium’s nuclear scientists, one senior administration official said the US is not aware of a specific, active Islamic State plot to obtain or use radioactive material.
“Certainly the video footage is of concern and suggests that there is at least some interest by [Islamic State],†Laura Holgate, senior director for weapons of mass destruction and arms control on Obama’s National Security Council, told reporters in a phone call on Tuesday. “But we don’t have any indications that it was part of a broader planning to acquire nuclear materials, and we don’t have any information that a broader plot exists.â€

WAXING LYRICAL
It is so easy to blame the Lord, or others, when things go wrong in our life. Yet the answer is found not in struggle, but in submission. Putting our life in His hands.LORD - HELP ME!
Now's the time when you are feeling low,
All your effort, with so little to show.
When life is getting on top of you,
God's Word doesn't seem true.
You're looking for a boost,
Chickens home to roost!
Nothing's working,
Life so hurting!
Indescribable!
Unbearable!
"Hey!
Pray!"
"Do I hear,
Voice in ear?"
"Now, listen to me,
One plus two, can be three!
If today, you will let me help you,
Your dreams, they can still come true.
When you rest your all in my gentle hand,
Your horizons, I will again, begin to expand."
Why do we ignore His advice?
Unwilling to pay the price,
Of giving all our being over to Him,
Rather let life's light, grow so dim.
Yes I'm still learning to understand,
Life, when it's placed in His hand,
Will simply, so much better be,
Than if it's only guided by me!

A DAVID MUSING
This week I planted some Lachenalia bulbs in pots, a small reminder of our days, long past, as bulb and cut flower growers. Then, instead of a dozen or two, we planted by the hundreds of thousands, at the least! This potting job was certainly easier!Bulbs are amazing in that they grow, flower, die, and rise again from the bud retained within the bulb over the hibernation period, generally, but not always, during Summer.
If you cut open a bulb you will see next year's bud surrounded by food stores providing protection, then sustenance for the precious bud within once growth starts again. A miracle of God's creative power!
There are times too, when we as Christians 'hibernate'. We go through the seasons of life, sometimes thinking that we will never grow and bloom again. Yet God wants to reassure us that, like the bulb, His Spirit is always within us, waiting to bloom again in due season.
May we never forget the Lachenalia of life. We will bloom again!
So until next week.....
MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOU BLESS GOD
His servant and yours
