WHOSE CHURCH IS IT ANYWAY? Part 5
THE CHURCH AS PROCLAIMED BY PAUL
Paul's ministry was birthed in the supernatural, when He had a personal encounter with Jesus.
3 As he neared Damascus on his journey, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him. 4 He fell to the ground and heard a voice say to him, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?” 5 “Who are you, Lord?” Saul asked. “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,” he replied. 6 “Now get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do.”
7 The men traveling with Saul stood there speechless; they heard the sound but did not see anyone. (Acts 9:3-7)
Three days later he was filled with the Holy Spirit and received back his sight.....
17 Then Ananias went to the house and entered it. Placing his hands on Saul, he said, “Brother Saul, the Lord—Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here—has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit.” 18 Immediately, something like scales fell from Saul’s eyes, and he could see again (Acts 9:17-18a)
Paul's ministry was birthed in the Holy Spirit.....
Barnabas and Saul Sent Off
In the church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen (who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch) and Saul. 2 While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” 3 So after they had fasted and prayed, they placed their hands on them and sent them off. (Acts 13:1-3)
Immediately, Paul and Barnabas were guided by the Holy Spirit as to where to go.....
On Cyprus
4 The two of them, sent on their way by the Holy Spirit, went down to Seleucia and sailed from there to Cyprus. (Acts 13:4)
.....and what to say and do, with startling effect.....
8 But Elymas the sorcerer (for that is what his name means) opposed them and tried to turn the proconsul from the faith. 9 Then Saul, who was also called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked straight at Elymas and said, 10 “You are a child of the devil and an enemy of everything that is right! You are full of all kinds of deceit and trickery. Will you never stop perverting the right ways of the Lord? 11 Now the hand of the Lord is against you. You are going to be blind, and for a time you will be unable to see the light of the sun.” Immediately mist and darkness came over him, and he groped about, seeking someone to lead him by the hand. 12 When the proconsul saw what had happened, he believed, for he was amazed at the teaching about the Lord. (Acts 13:8-12)
The Holy Spirit motivated, encouraged, and supported them all, even during persecution.....
48 When the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and honored the word of the Lord; and all who were appointed for eternal life believed. 49 The word of the Lord spread through the whole region. 50 But the Jews incited the God-fearing women of high standing and the leading men of the city. They stirred up persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them from their region. 51 So they shook the dust from their feet in protest against them and went to Iconium. 52 And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit. (Acts 13:48-52)
Holy Spirit enabled healings were a regular part of Paul's (actually God's ministry through Paul!) ministry.....
In Lystra and Derbe
8 In Lystra there sat a man crippled in his feet, who was lame from birth and had never walked. 9 He listened to Paul as he was speaking. Paul looked directly at him, saw that he had faith to be healed 10 and called out, “Stand up on your feet!” At that, the man jumped up and began to walk. (Acts 14:8-10)
Religion quickly reared its ugly head, both in Antioch.....
Some men came down from Judea to Antioch and were teaching the brothers: “Unless you are circumcised, according to the custom taught by Moses, you cannot be saved.” (Acts 15:1)
.....and also in Jerusalem, when Paul and Barnabas went back there to consult the apostles and elders over the circumcision issue. Jesus' main religious opposition, the Pharisees, continued their opposition to 'The Way'!
5 Then some of the believers who belonged to the party of the Pharisees stood up and said, “The Gentiles must be circumcised and required to obey the law of Moses.”
(Acts 15:5)
The key element that persuaded Peter that the Pharisees were wrong in their religious arguments, based on law, not grace, was that the Holy Spirit had been given to the uncircumcised gentiles.....
6 The apostles and elders met to consider this question. 7 After much discussion, Peter got up and addressed them: “Brothers, you know that some time ago God made a choice among you that the Gentiles might hear from my lips the message of the gospel and believe. 8 God, who knows the heart, showed that he accepted them by giving the Holy Spirit to them, just as he did to us. 9 He made no distinction between us and them, for he purified their hearts by faith. (Acts 15:6-9)
Paul was continually led by the Holy Spirit throughout his life and ministry. For example.....
Paul’s Vision of the Man of Macedonia
6 Paul and his companions traveled throughout the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been kept by the Holy Spirit from preaching the word in the province of Asia. 7 When they came to the border of Mysia, they tried to enter Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus would not allow them to. 8 So they passed by Mysia and went down to Troas. 9 During the night Paul had a vision of a man of Macedonia standing and begging him, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.” 10 After Paul had seen the vision, we got ready at once to leave for Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them. (Acts 16:6-10)
And again.....
9 One night the Lord spoke to Paul in a vision: “Do not be afraid; keep on speaking, do not be silent. 10 For I am with you, and no one is going to attack and harm you, because I have many people in this city.” 11 So Paul stayed for a year and a half, teaching them the word of God. (Acts 18:9-11)
Paul was insistent that water baptism must also be accompanied by that of the Holy Spirit.....
Paul in Ephesus
While Apollos was at Corinth, Paul took the road through the interior and arrived at Ephesus. There he found some disciples 2 and asked them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” They answered, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.” 3 So Paul asked, “Then what baptism did you receive?” “John’s baptism,” they replied. 4 Paul said, “John’s baptism was a baptism of repentance. He told the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus.” 5 On hearing this, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied. 7 There were about twelve men in all. (Acts 19:1-7)
He followed the Spirit's leading, even when he knew it would lead to hardship.....
22 “And now, compelled by the Spirit, I am going to Jerusalem, not knowing what will happen to me there. 23 I only know that in every city the Holy Spirit warns me that prison and hardships are facing me. 24 However, I consider my life worth nothing to me, if only I may finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me — the task of testifying to the gospel of God’s grace. (Acts 20:22-24)
Even if the danger was confirmed by others operating in the Holy Spirit too.....
10 After we had been there a number of days, a prophet named Agabus came down from Judea. 11 Coming over to us, he took Paul’s belt, tied his own hands and feet with it and said, “The Holy Spirit says, ‘In this way the Jews of Jerusalem will bind the owner of this belt and will hand him over to the Gentiles.’” 12 When we heard this, we and the people there pleaded with Paul not to go up to Jerusalem. 13 Then Paul answered, “Why are you weeping and breaking my heart? I am ready not only to be bound, but also to die in Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.” 14 When he would not be dissuaded, we gave up and said, “The Lord’s will be done.” (Acts 21:10-15)
The Lord encouraged him in his hardship.....
11 The following night the Lord stood near Paul and said, “Take courage! As you have testified about me in Jerusalem, so you must also testify in Rome.” (Acts 23:11)
Miracles accompanied him all the way, even when he was shipwrecked on the way to Rome.....
Once safely on shore, we found out that the island was called Malta. 2 The islanders showed us unusual kindness. They built a fire and welcomed us all because it was raining and cold. 3 Paul gathered a pile of brushwood and, as he put it on the fire, a viper, driven out by the heat, fastened itself on his hand. 4 When the islanders saw the snake hanging from his hand, they said to each other, “This man must be a murderer; for though he escaped from the sea, Justice has not allowed him to live.” 5 But Paul shook the snake off into the fire and suffered no ill effects. 6 The people expected him to swell up or suddenly fall dead, but after waiting a long time and seeing nothing unusual happen to him, they changed their minds and said he was a god. (Acts 28:1-6)
Holy Spirit power permeated his preaching.....
When I came to you, brothers, I did not come with eloquence or superior wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God. 2 For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. 3 I came to you in weakness and fear, and with much trembling. 4 My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, 5 so that your faith might not rest on men’s wisdom, but on God’s power. (1 Corinthians 2:1-5)
Paul sums up well, the need for the Holy Spirit's power and guidance in living the Christian life.....
Wisdom From the Spirit
6 We do, however, speak a message of wisdom among the mature, but not the wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing. 7 No, we speak of God’s secret wisdom, a wisdom that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began. 8 None of the rulers of this age understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. 9 However, as it is written: “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him” — 10 but God has revealed it to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. 11 For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the man’s spirit within him? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. 12 We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us. 13 This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words. 14 The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned. 15 The spiritual man makes judgments about all things, but he himself is not subject to any man’s judgment: 16 “For who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct him?” But we have the mind of Christ. (1 Corinthians 2:6-16)

FROM THE WORD
THE WORDS OF JESUS
May we hear what the Lord is saying to us.
Six Woes Declared on the Pharisees and Lawyers (Luke 11:37-54)
When Jesus joined them for lunch without ceremoniously washing His hands.
“You Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and the dish, but inside you’re full of greed and wickedness. You’re so foolish! Don’t you think the One who made the outside made the inside as well? If, acting from within, you do acts of kindness to others, then everything will be clean to you. Shame on you Pharisees! You pay tithe on herbs and plants, but you neglect justice and the love of God. You need to pay attention to the latter, while not leaving the former things undone. Shame on you Pharisees! You love to have the best seats in the synagogues, and to be greeted with respect when you go to the markets. Shame on you! You are like unmarked graves that people walk over without knowing.”
“Shame on you lawyers too! You place burdens on people that are too hard to carry, but you don’t lift a finger to help them. Shame on you! You build memorial tombs to honor the prophets, but it was your own fathers who killed them in the first place! By doing this you are witnesses showing that you agree with what your fathers did. They killed the prophets, and you build their tombs!
“This is why God in his wisdom said, ‘I will send them prophets and apostles; some they will kill, and others they will persecute.’ Consequently, this generation will be held accountable for the blood of all the prophets shed from the beginning of the world, from the blood of Abel right up to the blood of Zachariah who was killed between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, this generation will be held accountable for all of it. Shame on you lawyers! You have removed the key of knowledge. You didn’t go in yourselves, and you prevented others from going in too.”
Jesus Teaches His Disciples and a Great Crowd (Luke 12;1-12)
To the Disciples.
In the meantime the crowd had grown to several thousand and they were trampling each another. Jesus spoke first to his disciples. “Beware the yeast of the Pharisees—hypocrisy. For there’s nothing hidden that won’t be revealed, nothing secret that won’t be made known. Whatever you have said in the dark will be heard in the light, and whatever you whispered in private will be announced from the rooftops. I tell you, my friends, don’t be afraid of those who kill the body, for once they’ve done that there’s no more they can do. Let me make it clear whom you should be afraid of. You should be afraid of the one who after he has killed has the power to dispose of them in Gehenna. That’s the one you should be afraid of. 6Aren’t five sparrows sold for two pennies? But God doesn’t forget a single one of them. Even the hairs on your head have been counted. Don’t be afraid—you’re worth more than many sparrows!
“I tell you the truth, those who declare they belong to me, the Son of man will also declare they belong to him before God’s angels, but those who deny me will be denied before God’s angels. Everyone who speaks in opposition the Son of man will be forgiven, but anyone who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.
“When you’re brought to trial before synagogues, rulers, and authorities, don’t worry about how to defend yourself, or what you should say. The Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what’s important to say.”

BOOK OF THE WEEK
THINKING GREEK OR HEBREW:
Understanding Scripture as Jesus did.
One of the major causes of the church not truly walking in the ways of Jesus is that we don't truly understand what the ways of Jesus were, and are! For we view the Scriptures from a Greek (Western), rather than a Jewish (Eastern) perspective. The two are very different.
This book highlights the differences in interpretation between the cultures, opening up a new perspective on what it truly means to follow Jesus.

Join the many who have downloaded the 'The Words of Jesus'. I am sure you will be blessed by it, as I have been.
One key element here is the setting out in chronological order (as far as it is possible to do so) our Lord's words drawn from all the Gospels, and the elimination of repetition between Gospels.
You may be surprised by the different perspective this presentation gives you both in understanding of His life and ministry, and in achieving a closer relationship with Him.

DAVID'S DOODLINGS
CHARACTER
1100. As the church develops the character of Christ, so it will conquer the world for Him.
1101. To fulfil our potential in God we need to inherit His character.
1102. Character cannot be bought but must be developed through the trials of life.
1103. Salvation is instant, but developing godly character takes a lifetime.
1104. Feeling come and feelings go but character is eternal.
1105. An ounce of character outweighs a ton of enthusiasm, any day.
1106. Gifts are given, character developed. We prefer gifts but God seeks character, for the gifts are already His!
1107. Spiritual gifts are temporary while character lasts through eternity.
1108. Believers believe in God, while disciples build a godly character.

19. Its Funny How….
….hard it is to read a chapter in the Bible,
but how easy it is to read 100 pages of a best selling novel.
….people want to get a front seat at a game or concert,
but scramble for a back seat at church services.
….we need 2-3 weeks notice to fit a church event into our busy schedule,
but can adjust our schedule at a moments notice for other events.
….how hard it is to for people to tell others a simple gospel message,
but how simple it is to repeat gossip.
….we automatically believe what the newspaper says,
but always question the Bible.

21. Feed My Cow
One Sunday a cowboy went to church. When he entered, he saw that he and the preacher were the only ones present. The preacher asked the cowboy if he wanted him to go ahead and preach.
The cowboy said, "I'm not too smart, but if I went to feed my cattle and only one showed up, I'd feed him."
So the minister began his sermon.
One hour passed, then two hours, then two-and-a-half hours. The preacher finally finished and came down to ask the cowboy how he had liked the sermon.
The cowboy answered slowly, "Well, I'm not very smart, but if I went to feed my cattle and only one showed up, I sure wouldn't feed him ALL the hay."

The Amazon, a gigantic system of rivers and forests in South America, supplies 20% of the world's oxygen. (For how much longer?)
21. Multitudinous Colourful Possibilities
There are 1,929,770,126,028,800 different colour combinations possible on a Rubik's cube. (Counted each one!)
22. No Escape
The famous magician and escape artist, who survived numerous death-defying stunts, died on Halloween 1926 at the age of 52. The cause of death was peritonitis, internal poisoning resulting from a ruptured appendix. Interestingly, a few months before he died, Houdini bought a bronze coffin and had himself locked into it and submerged in a hotel swimming pool for an hour and a half before the coffin was pulled up and opened to reveal a healthy Houdini. He took the coffin on tour with him and jokingly instructed his wife to use the coffin should anything happen to him while on tour. It was in that very coffin that his body was returned to New York for burial. (And he’s still in it – as far as we know!)

WAXING LYRICAL
Busyness and creativity are not good bedmates. But I tried!
CREATIVE!
Would like to write a poem
to express my creative side,
But first you need to 'knowem'
To be imaginative inside.
But that is just a struggle,
as with busyness I juggle.
So this offering will be very short,
Even though I have lot's to report.
Maybe next week I will have more time,
Time for the jingling bells to chime.
But then again, the weeks may be two,
Slipping both feet into a single shoe.
Or maybe three, or even four,
as we open, our new store,
Enough of this trash,
Now I must dash!
See you again soon,
Is what I croon,
Goodbye for now,
Don't be sour,
Still can smile,
Go extra mile.
Do wend,
The end!
So help me Lord!

A DAVID MUSING
We have had an amazing time, in Scorland and England, with family and friends.
My birthday present from my wife Kathy were tickets for myself and our son Cameron (another motor racing tragic) to the Goodwood Festival of Speed, on the grand country estate of the Earl of March. Thousands of cars were displayed, of all ages, with an emphasis on those that go fast!
The photo is of the winning car at Le Mans this year, driven by 2 New Zealanders Earl Bamber abd Brendan Hartley, along with a German, Timo Bernhard, displayed at Goodwwod.
Cameron and I had a fantastic day. Thank you sweetheart!
This is so different to what we will be going to in Africa this week, but it will remain in the memory - for a little while at least as my dysfunctional memory allows! LOL!
Our adventure in Africa begins this week, so hope to have a nessage from there, if I can arrange an internet connection in time.
If not, we will catch up again in a fortnight's time.
Until next week (hoefully).......
MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOU BLESS GOD.
