FROM CELEBRATION TO CONSTERNATION

In a week when the people of London have experienced the extremes of euphoria and tragedy within a 24 hour period, it is timely to look at the backgrounds of both.

OLYMPIC GAMES
The modern Olympic Games are the world's top sporting event, involving virtually every nation on the earth. The Olympics come out of ancient Greece, whose culture, thought patterns, science and educational systems still permeate, indeed dominate, Western society today. Our concepts of freedom, democracy and the importance of the individual, all come from Greece. Hence, staging the 2004 Olympics in Athens was of particular 'spiritual' significance to many. Hosting the Olympics brings prestige to a city, so it is not surprising that Londoners, and the British people in general, were celebrating. For 'The Games' is a showcase of our modern world.

ISLAMIC TERRORISM
On the other hand we saw, once again, the devastating effects a small number of individuals, determined to impose the judgement of their version of the Islam Religion can have upon the lives of ordinary people simply going about their day to day business. To obtain some small understanding of their motivation we need to take a look at the foundation of Islam.

In The Physical
The Prophet Muhammad founded Islam, the religion. Born in Mecca in 570AD, he received his revelations, claimed to be from the God of Abraham, during the early part of the 7th century. Initially he was a man of peace. But once his teachings gained in popularity, he was banished from Mecca to Medina. As he grew more powerful he promoted 'just' war, and along with 10,000 followers, conquered Mecca, from which he had been banished, in 630. He died in 632.

So we have an explanation of the two sides of Islam. Many follow his teachings on peace while others embrace the 123 verses in the Koran that justify war. However, virtually every believer will concede that war is justifiable, when the honour of Islam is at stake.

Unlike Christianity, which separates church and state, Islam sees the church, the state and the land as one. The key is the land, for once you control the land, you can convert the people who live on it voluntarily, or often, forcibly. It needs to be understood that this is a 'religious' approach, one also used by the Emperor Constantine and his successors in the Roman Empire to spread 'religious Christianity' throughout the Western world. And also applied, as Moslems will quickly point out, to the Semitic world during the Crusades. This state religion led to the Dark Ages. It took the Reformation to reintroduce the concept of a personal relationship with the Father through belief in Jesus. For true Christianity is not 'religion' but 'relationship'!

This emphasis on land, and regaining it if it is ever lost, explains the intractability of the conflict in Israel. Israel's right to exist cannot be accepted within Islam, as they ruled the area for many hundreds of years. In Africa, through the regions where Christianity and Islam meet, the operation of this 'land grab principle' too, can be clearly seen. It also explains why the terrorists see a country as 'Christian', even though people of many creeds may live there and be affected by their actions. For to them, the state, religion and land are one. Therefore, Britain, Spain and the US are seen as being 100% 'Christian' in their eyes.

In The Spiritual
Unlike Greek philosophy, in Judaism, Islam and Christianity, the spiritual world is regarded as the 'real' world. Many Western Christians have difficulty accepting this principle, for we are so conditioned by Greek oriented thought. Most Westerners see this life as a prelude to a spiritual afterlife. However this is not what Jesus taught. The spiritual 'kingdom of God' is to be lived here and now. And we are engaged in a spiritual battle now!

To better understand Islam in the spiritual then, we need to seek out its source. The Koran claims ancestry back to Adam through Abraham, as do both Judaism and Christianity. However the difference comes in the next generation. For Islam traces its inheritance through Ishmael, rather than Isaac. Ishmael was the result of Abraham and Sarah trying to fulfil God's promise in their own way. It made sense, in that they were very old, and the servant Hagar, in that society, could legitimately produce an heir in such circumstances. Hagar and Sarah fell out, so Abraham reluctantly sent her and Ishmael away. In the Desert, when facing starvation, God promised he would make Ishmael into 'a great nation.' But even before his birth, Hagar had been told that her son would be a wild donkey who would live in hostility to his brothers, and his brothers to him.

So now, in the spiritual, we have Islam, a man made religion with the character of Ishmael, a great nation of approaching 1 billion believers. One brought about by Abraham and Sarah's human solution to God's promise, and one that generally lives in hostility to its spiritual brothers, both Jews and Christians.

What does the future hold? We don't know the details. But we do know, as Christians, we are to to love our enemies, whether they be Humanists, originating from the Greeks, or those of other religions. For the Bible promises us, that those who hold on to their faith in Jesus to the end, will be saved. Amen. Come Jesus, come.

Lest we think that terrorism is the sole preserve of Islamic extremists, this week has also seen the 20th commemoration of the time French Secret Service agents exploded 2 limpet mines on the hull of the Rainbow Warrior (pictured). It happened in Auckland Harbour, here at the end of the earth, in little old New Zealand, killing a crewmember. The ship was about to head a protest armada to Muroroa Atoll, in the Pacific, where the French were testing nuclear weapons. No one is immune. Terrorism is neither new, nor exclusive!

FROM THE WORD

"Then the Pharisees went out and laid plans to trap him in his words. They sent their disciples to him along with the Herodians. “Teacher,” they said, “we know you are a man of integrity and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. You aren’t swayed by men, because you pay no attention to who they are. Tell us then, what is your opinion? Is it right to pay taxes to Caesar or not?” But Jesus, knowing their evil intent, said, “You hypocrites, why are you trying to trap me? Show me the coin used for paying the tax.” They brought him a denarius, and he asked them, “Whose portrait is this? And whose inscription?” “Caesar’s,” they replied. Then he said to them, “Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.”" (Matthew 22:15-21)

" “The Law and the Prophets were proclaimed until John. Since that time, the good news of the kingdom of God is being preached, and everyone is forcing his way into it." (Luke 15:16)

For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. (Ephesians 6:12-13)

"The angel of the LORD also said to her: “You are now with child and you will have a son. You shall name him Ishmael, for the LORD has heard of your misery. He will be a wild donkey of a man; his hand will be against everyone and everyone’s hand against him,
and he will live in hostility toward all his brothers.”" (Genesis 16:11-12)

" “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous." (Matthew 5:43-5)

" “Be on your guard against men; they will hand you over to the local councils and flog you in their synagogues. On my account you will be brought before governors and kings as witnesses to them and to the Gentiles. But when they arrest you, do not worry about what to say or how to say it. At that time you will be given what to say, for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you. “Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; children will rebel against their parents and have them put to death. All men will hate you because of me, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved." (Matthew 10:17-22)

CRANWELL'S CARTOON

5 “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love
to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be
seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward
in full. 6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door
and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees
what is done in secret, will reward you. 7 And when you pray, do
not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard
because of their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your
Father knows what you need before you ask him. 9 “This, then, is
how you should pray: ”‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,
10 your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us today our daily bread. 12 Forgive us our debts, as we
also have forgiven our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.’ 14 For if you forgive men when
they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.
15 But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not
forgive your sins. (Matthew 6:5-15)

Hello David,
I really enjoyed your piece today on job titles. It is one aspect of a issue that has bothered me since entering ministry. My understanding of ordination was that it gave me permission and opportunity to serve Christ in a set of roles. It became clear to me that, for some ministry, ordination is a pathway to status, power and recognition.

Considering the state of the church in general today in the eyes of our cultures, ordination began a deep disappointment for these clergy. Even though our theology may differ on what I consider minor issues, though many consider them major, I appreciate your ability to serve Christ in the ways you do. Keep up your good work.

LAUGHING AT OURSELVES

***Blessed are those who can laugh at themselves for they shall never cease to be amused***

*** "Those who can't laugh at themselves leave the job to others." ***

393. A MATTER OF PRIORITY
The Catholic Church's air conditioning broke down, so they hired a fellow named Higgins to crawl around in the ducts and figure out what was wrong. As Higgins peeked down through one of the vents in the sanctuary, he saw little old Mrs. Murphy kneeling by the altar, saying her rosary.

Being a bit of a rascal, Higgins decided it would be funny to try and mess with Mrs. Murphy's mind. In his most authoritative voice, Higgins said, "This is Jesus. Your prayers will be answered."

Mrs. Murphy didn't even blink; just kept on saying her rosary. Higgins tried again. "This is Jesus, the Son of God!" Higgins boomed. "Your prayers will be answered!"

At this, Mrs. Murphy looks up and yells, "Wait your turn, Lord. I'm talking to your Mother!"

392. TAKE FIVE
One Sunday, a preacher announced that he'd pass out miniature crosses made out of palm leaves.

"Put a cross in the room where your family argues the most," the preacher said. "When you look at the cross, it will remind you that God is watching."

As people were leaving the church, a woman walked up to the preacher, shook his hand and said, "I'll take five."

Water freely with patience and cultivate with love.

There will be much fruit in your garden because you reap what you sow.

FACTS FOR FUN

LAST WEEKS QUESTION: What is a Welsh rabbit?

ANSWER: Welsh rabbit (also called Welsh rarebit) isn’t an animal at all. It's melted cheese on toast or crackers. It was called this so peasants could imagine themselves eating real rabbit -- or at least make fun of the fact that they couldn't afford it. The name originated in an era when only the Welsh nobility could hunt rabbits. The poor peasants had to melt cheese on toast and simply call it ‘rabbit’. (Unable to acquire the habit of eating rabbit.)

THIS WEEK'S QUESTION: Where did the term ‘private eye’ originate?

Answer Next Week.

SOME FUN FACTS

639. BURIED DEEP
Alaska holds the World Record for the greatest daily snowfall, where 78 inches (1.95metres) of snow fell on February 16 1907. (Even buried the snowmen?)

640. SWISS CAUTION
Every Swiss resident is required to have access to a bomb shelter. (In about the only European country that has managed to keep out of all wars for more than 100 years.)

641. ADVENTUROUS TRAVELLERS?
The foreign city most visited by American citizens is the closest – Tijuana. (The closest foreign city to New Zealand is Sydney, Australia, some 2,000km away. Proportionately though, more New Zealanders have visited Sydney!)

BIBLE BITS

***In 1603 James IV of Scotland became King James I of England and began a programme of peacemaking between hostile English religious factions. That very year, Dr John Reynolds, the Puritan spokesman at a meeting of leaders at Hampton Court (a-maze-ing!) proposed a new English translation of the Bible be issued in honour of the king. So his name has lived on through the 1768 revision, still known as the King James Bible.

***The conquest of the city of Jebus was one of King David's great victories. He renamed the city 'Jerusalem', meaning 'City of Peace'. It certainly hasn't yet lived up to its name, although one day it will. It is situated about 800metres (2500 feet) above sea level, on a limestone ridge, which was good for protection. we are all looking forward to a 'New Jerusalem' to replace this city where history continues to be made, right up to today.

***The Book of Hebrews is the only anonymous letter in the New Testament, hence why it was placed at the end of Paul's letters by the collectors of the Canon. The King James Version attributes this letter to Paul, but later versions don't, as Paul doesn't identify himself and there are other differences to his writings elsewhere. It is a hugely relevant book to us today!

MIND GAMES TO PLAY WITH HUMANS
1. After your humans give you a bath, DON'T LET THEM TOWEL DRY YOU! Instead, run to their bed, jump up and dry yourself off on the sheets. This is especially good if it's right before your humans bedtime.

2. Act like a convicted criminal. When the humans come home, put your ears back, tail between your legs, chin down and act as if you have done something really bad. Then, watch as the humans frantically search the house for the damage they think you have caused. (Note: This only works when you have done absolutely nothing wrong.)

3. Let the humans teach you a brand new trick. Learn it perfectly. Then the humans try to demonstrate it to someone else, stare blankly back at the humans. Pretend you have no idea what they're talking about.

4. Make your humans be patient. When you go outside to go 'pee', sniff around the entire yard as your humans wait. Act as if the spot you choose to go pee will ultimately decide the fate of the earth.

5. Draw attention to the human. When out for a walk always pick the busiest, most visible spot to go 'poo'. Take your time and make sure everyone watches. This works particularly well if your humans have forgotten to bring a plastic bag.

6. When out for a walk, alternate between choking and coughing every time a strange human walks by.

7. Make your own rules. Don't always bring back the stick when playing fetch with the humans. Make them go and chase it once in a while.

8. Hide from your humans. When your humans come home, don't greet them at the door. Instead, hide from them, and make them think something terrible has happened to you. (Don't reappear until one of your humans is panic-stricken and close to tears).

9. When your human calls you to come back in, always take your time. Walk as slowly as possible back to the door.

10. Wake up twenty minutes before the alarm clock is set to go off and make the humans take you out for your morning pee. As soon as you get back inside, fall asleep. (Humans can rarely fall back asleep after going outside, this will drive them nuts!)

MANNERS AND CUSTOMS IN BIBLICAL LANDS

JOSEPHS COAT OF MANY COLOURS
Translated by the Septuagint and Vulgate Bible as the 'coat of many colours. It is same expression used for the garment worm by Tamar, the daughter of King David. It is translated in Greek and Latin as 'a sleeved tunic.' For this reason many Biblical scholars believe it was a long undergarment with sleeves. The working people usually wore a short tunic while the nobility wore a long tunic with sleeves.

‘WALKING WITH JESUS’ COURSE

A 3-part course of understanding based on Revelation 12:11. An easily understood, practical series on living the Christian life today. Compiled in 1993-4, the 3 studies, each accompanied by 6 hours of tapes, have been used by over 10,000 New Zealanders plus many overseas, to gain an increased understanding of what ‘walking with Jesus’ is all about. Is useful for enquirers, new Christians and particularly, those seeking an extra dimension to their faith. Ideal for home groups and church teaching sessions too. A non-denominational course, it is supported by Christians from diverse backgrounds. The 3 parts cover

1. The Way of Salvation: Finding Jesus as your personal Saviour.
2. Life Through the Spirit: Christian living through the teaching of Jesus and in the power of the Holy Spirit.
3. Jesus is Lord: Living our lives for Jesus.

So if you desire a deeper relationship with your God, this can help point you in the right direction. You still have to make the effort though! Can’t do that for you!

A DAVID MUSING

Because of the research required for the editorial article, this week's newsletter has taken a good day to write.

I'm often asked how long it takes. Usually it is about 4 hours. Of course, much of the material is drawn from the web site, having been compiled over the past 5 years. I generally write it on a Sunday afternoon here in New Zealand - Saturday in much of the world. It is reviewed on a Monday morning and sent out at 9am New Zealand time. Another computer at our web host, in another city, handles the despatch. Amazing really. I do realise that many of you receive it on a Sunday evening. Not because I'm super efficient, but rather, as the International Date Line passes near New Zealand. So we are the first country in the world to greet the new day.

And yes, our 'All Blacks' beat the British and Irish Lions again for a clean sweep of the Rugby Tests. Was sure you would want to know!

Well, it's been a long night, so I had better go now.

So until next week...

MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOU BLESS GOD.

His servant and yours

David Tait
