TRANSFORMATION OF THE CHURCH: 3. FROM KINGS TO KINGDOM (continued)
Last week we started to look at the third area of relationship required of us, interaction with non-believers.I mentioned that when the Lord took me into fulltime ministry, I thought I had reached the ultimate place in my walk and work for Him. Surely this was to be the fulfillment of the spiritual path the Lord had placed me on. The highest call, the ultimate obedience, or however you want to describe it.
But the Lord had other ideas! As I so often find out, His ways are not my ways! And His way for me is not my way for me! I so often hear people ask the Lord to fulfill their heart's desire, but very rarely hear anyone ask Him to fulfill HIS hearts desire for them! This is a key difference between the world of kings and the world of the kingdom.
When I returned from Africa, I had to go through a revolution in my thinking. "Lord, do you really want me to go back into business? Why Lord? Surely what I am doing now is the best way to build your kingdom?"
The Lord needed to show me some things! For in the world of kings, the realm in which most of the church lives today the king, the pastor, leader or tele evangelist is put up on a kingly pedestal (and pulled down!) by the people, other leaders, and sometimes even the state. To become a king today, you need an educational qualification and an official appointment by a human organisation, such as a denomination.
Please see my heart! I am not saying that all formal church leadership is evil and wrong! It has served the church over the past 2000 years and will continue to do so in the future. But the Lord is saying that there is a different way, one that has always been there, one which He now wishes to develop in a way that will build His kingdom upon the earth before His great and glorious return.
The Lord was showing me He wished me to witness into the community, that His kingdom will be built through His people interacting with others, by becoming His light to the lost.
William Booth, the founder of the Salvation Army, had this understanding in relation to preaching. "No sort of defense is needed for preaching outdoors, but it would take a very strong argument to prove that a man who has never preached beyond the walls of his meetinghouse has done his duty. A defense is required for services within buildings rather than for worship outside of them."
Mother Teresa and Brother Andrew, who come from the most structured church of them all, also had this kingdom revelation in terms of working in the community.
For living in the kingdom involves our total life, 24/7, and includes every interaction we have, from the checkout operator in the supermarket to the policeman, from the street sweeper to the cabinet minister.
Kings have palaces (church buildings) to which people are invited in. The kingdom however, is built by disciples being the living Word in their own communities and in others to which the Lord calls.
So now, through Seekers Megamarts, we provide a service into our local community, selling recycled clothing and other goods at prices people can afford, and using surpluses, both money and clothing, to fund projects in Africa, to help the poor there help themselves.
The organisation works on a mixture of paid, partly paid, and voluntary Christian and non Christian staff, all depending upon people's circumstances. Kathy and I work voluntarily, as Kathy still provides our family income through her paid nursing job. One of our managers is paid a full wage as she lives on her own. Some work hour for hour, paid and voluntary, others receive petrol vouchers to contribute towards their transport costs.
Bibles and Christian books given to us are given away to others. The Walking With Jesus Course is also available free of charge. We are open about our Jesus motivation, but do not evangelise overtly.
The organisation is still evolving so we don't pretend to have all the answers.
To be really honest, living this life, where people can see me warts and all, is far more difficult than sending out teachings over the internet and visiting countries for a short time, speaking at conferences or crusades. Even when approaching this type of ministry with the attitude of a servant, it is all too easy to slip into a kingly mode!
While honesty about my shortcomings etc., has always been something that I hope has made this ministry somewhat different to some, interacting with people through the challenges (and there are many of them currently!) of day to day life and business, truly forces one to servanthood, if one wants to be like Jesus.
Of course, the buck stops with me. There are hard decisions I have to make, as much as I can under the leading of the Holy Spirit. Jesus had to too! He chose to die! But my primary purpose and motivation is to serve others, not to build up my own kingdom.
"Lord, help me I pray, to put You first, and to serve others as you would have me do, so that your kingdom may come, that your will may be done on earth as it is in heaven. Amen."
(Testimony to be continued next week)

FROM THE WORD
LIVING AS CHILDREN OF LIGHT"So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking. They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts. Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, with a continual lust for more. You, however, did not come to know Christ that way. Surely you heard of him and were taught in him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus. You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to his neighbor, for we are all members of one body. “In your anger do not sinâ€: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold. He who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with his own hands, that he may have something to share with those in need. Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you. Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people. Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving. For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person—such a man is an idolater—has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God’s wrath comes on those who are disobedient. Therefore do not be partners with them. For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) and find out what pleases the Lord. Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. For it is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. 13 But everything exposed by the light becomes visible, for it is light that makes everything visible. This is why it is said: “Wake up, O sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.†Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is. Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit. Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ." (Ephesians 4:17-5:21)
WALKING IN THE LIGHT
"This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives. My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world. We know that we have come to know him if we obey his commands. 4 The man who says, “I know him,†but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But if anyone obeys his word, God’s love is truly made complete in him. This is how we know we are in him: Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did. Dear friends, I am not writing you a new command but an old one, which you have had since the beginning. This old command is the message you have heard. Yet I am writing you a new command; its truth is seen in him and you, because the darkness is passing and the true light is already shining. Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates his brother is still in the darkness. Whoever loves his brother lives in the light, and there is nothing in him to make him stumble. But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness; he does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded him. I write to you, dear children, because your sins have been forgiven on account of his name. I write to you, fathers, because you have known him who is from the beginning. I write to you, young men, because you have overcome the evil one.
I write to you, dear children, because you have known the Father. I write to you, fathers,
because you have known him who is from the beginning. I write to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God lives in you, and you have overcome the evil one." (1 John 1:5-2:6)

CRANWELL'S CARTOON
6 After forty days Noah opened the window he had made in the ark 7 and sent out a raven, and it kept flying back and forth until the water had dried up from the earth. 8 Then he sent out a dove to see if the water had receded from the surface of the ground. 9 But the dove could find no place to set its feet because there was water over all the surface of the earth; so it returned to Noah in the ark. He reached out his hand and took the dove and brought it back to himself in the ark. 10 He waited seven more days and again sent out the dove from the ark. 11 When the dove returned to him in the evening, there in its beak was a freshly plucked olive leaf! Then Noah knew that the water had receded from the earth. 12 He waited seven more days and sent the dove out again, but this time it did not return to him. (Genesis 8:6-12)

LAUGHING AT OURSELVES
***Blessed are those who can laugh at themselves for they shall never cease to be amused****** "Those who can't laugh at themselves leave the job to others." ***
746. A DEATH IN THE FAMILY
A Pastor went to his church office on Monday morning and discovered a dead mule in the church yard. He called the police. Since there did not appear to be any foul play, the police referred the pastor to the health department.
They said since there was no health threat that he should call the sanitation department. The manager said he could not pick up the mule without authorization from the mayor.
Now the pastor knew the mayor and was not to eager to call him. The mayor had a bad temper and was generally hard to deal with, but the pastor called him anyway.
The mayor did not disappoint him. He immediately began to rant and rave at the pastor and finally said, "Why did you call me any way? Isn't it your job to bury the dead?"
The pastor paused for a brief prayer and asked the Lord to direct his response. Then, he replied "Yes, Mayor, it is my job to bury the dead, but I always like to notify the next of kin first!
745. THE PREACHER AND THE GOLFER
Fred had tried to be particularly careful about his language as he played golf with his preacher. But on the twelfth hole, when he twice failed to hit out of a sand trap, he lost his resolve and let fly with a string of expletives.
The preacher felt obliged to respond. "I have observed," said he in a calm voice, "that the best golfers do not use foul language."
"I guess not, said Fred, "what the hell do they have to cuss about?"

TIBET: Tibetans respond to the hope of peace
There is an illusion of calm over Tibet. Anger over China's ruthless crackdown in March still seethes. As the Olympic Games in Beijing near, the spotlight brings awareness of their plight. But the Tibetans are also looking for hope. Words of Hope's Lee DeYoung says, "The broadcast that Words of Hope is involved in every night continues to broadcast hope and the good news of the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the Tibetan people. The Chinese, in the past, have banned Tibetan people from listening to foreign stations, but we do know, from a number of testimonies, that people do listen quietly in private." The team is praying for fruit. "There are over 20,000 responses that have come in the last year to these broadcasts. We know that many Tibetan people, most of whom still are Tibetan Buddhists, are interested in listening to these programs which highlight, in a positive way, their culture and bring them hope."Source: Mission Network News via GO GLOBAL MISSIONS REPORT 2008 No. 64

WAXING LYRICAL
Feeling dejected that you don't seem to be doing as well as the ministry down the road? Then, this poem is a message of reassurance for you. Yes, God love you too!YES IT'S TRUE, GOD LOVES YOU!
I love all my people,
More than the steeple.
Many, over the years, have let me down,
But still I bless them, with Your crown.
But it's true, God loves you!
What more can I do for you Lord?
Thought we were of one accord!
But when I see what others have done,
Why have I missed out on all the fun!
But it's true, God loves you!
"I hear you, I hear you, my faithful one,
For you, just for you, I gave my Son,
You are so very precious in my sight,
A shining star, radiating my light."
Yes it's true, God loves you!
"What you perceive, will not always be true,
You don't see things, from my point of view,
For I am looking always, to the heart,
Don't put the horse, before the cart."
Yes it's true, God loves you!
"I do not judge my own by numbers or wealth,
These can be achieved by the human self,
But by how much of yourself you will give to Me,
Commitment and submission - that's what I see."
Yes it's true, God loves you!
"The order in Heaven is so different to earth,
For I am only interested, in spiritual girth!
Not beauty, nor success, nor intelligence, nor size,
I know your heart is for me, that much I realise."
Yes it's true, God loves you!
"So when the glorious day arrives, to finally come, stay with me,
You have built up treasure here, will last throughout eternity,
No, don't get yourself deceived by the glitter of earthly ways,
You are destined to rule and reign with Me - now and always!"
Yes it's true, God loves you!

A DAVID MUSING
The Olympics have started, which for a keen sports follower and fireworks lover like me is fantastic. However, I fully understand that coming from the Greek background as they do, they are very much man rather than God centred. This is accentuated this time with the location of China, which is determined to show off the huge strides they have made in material, human progress.
We need to be careful not to be drawn into all the hype and people adulation that goes with it.
As you may guess, I am also keen on trivia. You may like to know then that our very small country of New Zealand had both the first team and the first individual to compete in these Olympics! Our Womens Soccer (Football) team kicked off in the first match of the Olympics against Japan on Wednesday! It was a very good result for us minnows, a 1 all draw. The first individual competitor was Mark Todd, a former double gold medal winner, who started the Equestrian event with the Dressage at 6:30am on Saturday morning in Hong Kong! Even at that early hour it was very hot!
Our little area of Hawkwes Bay (120,000 people) has two good medal prospects in the womens rowing. Twin sisters the defending champions in the Double Skulls and another young lady from Napier is a medal prospect in the Single Sculls.
PRAYER NEEDED: We are still facing 'Council challenges' with our shops. Also Kathy has not had good health this week, so we would appreciate prayers for her early diagnosis and recovery.

MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOU BLESS GOD.
