GOD'S CALLING HIS CHURCH 5: FROM RECEIVING TO GIVING
It's a truism, that in many churches the best and most important sermon preached on a Sunday is for the offering!Conversely, the twin signs of a true conversion are; making amends with those one has wronged, plus having a generous wallet!
Yes, money, giving and receiving, shows where our heart truly is. For we all love receiving, but giving reflects the heart of God within.
It is true too, that the structure of the church with its emphasis on buildings, paid clergy and programmes is a heavy consumer of financial resources, simply to keep going.
It follows from this then, that most teaching on giving is proclaimed in anticipation of the teacher, whether it be an individual or a church, being the recipient of the gifts! Put harshly, it is simply disguised self-interest.
In the Old Testament, the principle of tithing is established in 6 passages. The most detailed treatment is in Deuteronomy. Interestingly here, it only involves giving the tithe to the Levites and the poor, every third year. In the other two, the tithe is to be taken to the Temple where the tithers themselves are to consume it, giving thanks in front of the Lord.
22 Be sure to set aside a tenth of all that your fields produce each year. 23 Eat the tithe of your grain, new wine and oil, and the firstborn of your herds and flocks in the presence of the LORD your God at the place he will choose as a dwelling for his Name, so that you may learn to revere the LORD your God always. (Deuteronomy 14:22-3)
12 When you have finished setting aside a tenth of all your produce in the third year, the year of the tithe, you shall give it to the Levite, the alien, the fatherless and the widow, so that they may eat in your towns and be satisfied. (Deuteronomy 26:12)
The New Testament does not mention the tithe. Why? Because we have moved from the Age of Law to the Age of Grace. The emphasis in the New Testament therefore, is on giving. Giving comes out of our heart attitude towards God, our desire to bless Him as He has blessed us. It is an 'internal', heart decision under the New Covenant, not an 'external' requirement of the Law of the Old.
For those who follow Jesus fully, the heart response towards giving is likely to be more than 10%! In fact, one rich man was asked to give, not 10%, but everything he had! The emphasis too, is always on giving to the poor.
21 Jesus answered, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.†(Matthew 19:21)
The focus of the prosperity type doctrines so prevalent today in the church today though, is on giving to receive. Give the Lord (by way of me) a Ford (with apologies to Henry!) and you will receive from the Lord (not from me)a Rolls Royce. Not only does this rarely happen, and if so, for other reasons, but it is contrary to the entire tenor of New Testament Scripture. For our rewards are to be heavenly, not carnal, illustrated in the example of the rich young man above.
Today God is calling His church, his people, away from a mindset of receiving to one of giving. Sacrificial giving! Giving of our time, our resources, our thought lives, our leisure, our all, to Him. For giving is the very heart of servanthood, to which we are all called. Yes, it is nice to receive, but it is blessed to give. To give our whole life to Jesus, as Jesus did for us. That is the call upon His people today.
PRINCIPLE 5: God is calling out to Himself today a people who are prepared to give all to Him.
"But God, I need an aeroplane to be efficient for you!" "If it is that critical David, I will get you there - my way!" "Okay God..."

FROM THE WORD
TITHES"Be sure to set aside a tenth of all that your fields produce each year. Eat the tithe of your grain, new wine and oil, and the firstborn of your herds and flocks in the presence of the LORD your God at the place he will choose as a dwelling for his Name, so that you may learn to revere the LORD your God always. But if that place is too distant and you have been blessed by the LORD your God and cannot carry your tithe (because the place where the LORD will choose to put his Name is so far away), then exchange your tithe for silver, and take the silver with you and go to the place the LORD your God will choose. Use the silver to buy whatever you like: cattle, sheep, wine or other fermented drink, or anything you wish. Then you and your household shall eat there in the presence of the LORD your God and rejoice. And do not neglect the Levites living in your towns, for they have no allotment or inheritance of their own. At the end of every three years, bring all the tithes of that year’s produce and store it in your towns, so that the Levites (who have no allotment or inheritance of their own) and the aliens, the fatherless and the widows who live in your towns may come and eat and be satisfied, and so that the LORD your God may bless you in all the work of your hands." (Deuteronomy 14:22-29)
THE RICH YOUNG MAN
"Now a man came up to Jesus and asked, “Teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life?†“Why do you ask me about what is good?†Jesus replied. “There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, obey the commandments.†“Which ones?†the man inquired.
Jesus replied, â€â€˜Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony, honor your father and mother,’ and ‘love your neighbor as yourself.’†“All these I have kept,†the young man said. “What do I still lack?†Jesus answered, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.†When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth. Then Jesus said to his disciples, “I tell you the truth, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.†When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished and asked, “Who then can be saved?†Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.†Peter answered him, “We have left everything to follow you! What then will there be for us?†Jesus said to them, “I tell you the truth, at the renewal of all things, when the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life. But many who are first will be last, and many who are last will be first." (Matthew 19:16-30)
"“Now I commit you to God and to the word of his grace, which can build you up and give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified. I have not coveted anyone’s silver or gold or clothing. You yourselves know that these hands of mine have supplied my own needs and the needs of my companions. In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’â€" (Acts 20:32-35)

DAVID'S DOODLINGS
RELIGION, REVELATION AND GOD'S KINGDOM: 41052. Today's revelation becomes tomorrow's religion.
1053. One dose of God is worth more than a billion of religion!
1054. When mankind cannot accept God's revelation, they adapt it to become religion.
1055. The cost of God's kingdom is obedience, religion's, money. Most of us take the easy option!
1056. Religion goes as God's kingdom grows.
1057. Revelation tells us God's kingdom is available now, while religion places itself in the now, with the kingdom to be found in the future.
1058. Religion may well be the opiate of the masses, but God's kingdom is possessed by the godly, right now!
1059. Religion comes and religion goes, but God's kingdom goes on forever.
1060. God's kingdom now isn't freely given, but possessed through godly obedience.
1061. God reveals, while religion conceals.
1062. Religion is not a church but a mind closed to change.

FROM YOU - TO ME - TO YOU
My brother David,Once again God boggles my mind with how he works in such splendid, and
glorious ways. Here you are addressing the misunderstanding of kingship and
servanthood for the PGIM message, and just this evening I was teaching on
John 17:1-5 wherein Jesus is saying to Father that eternal life is knowing
God. While he does not discount all the wonderful trappings of Heaven about
which we read, he elevates eternal life to a much higher plane. Nothing else
has any real value outside of really knowing God. No mention of dominion,
etc..
Jesus continues in the same vein when he speaks of how he has glorified
Father. Imagine, "all" he did was complete what Father sent him here to do.
That only leads me to ask, and I did, "Are you and I glorifying God by
accomplishing what he sent us here to do?"
He sent Jesus to demonstrate his love for us by paying the ultimate price -
his life.
Has Father not also purposed us to give our lives for the sake of others,
thereby becoming like Jesus? It seems to me that as we are obedient to the
will and purpose of God for our lives, we will not have time for "kingdom
building." However, as we follow in the footsteps of Jesus, the kingdom will
be built. "Lest the Lord build the house, the laborers labor in vain."
Praise the Lord! Thank you, Jesus!
And, thank you, David, for your obedience to the calling of the Lord your
God.
In His Service,
Ron

David,
I am afraid you got it incorrect about a state of Franklin. It never joined the
union. Tennessee was a part of North Carolina and we stretched past the mountains
and reached the Mississippi River until N.C. let them separate and then they joined
the U.S.A. They should realize N.C. could have refused to permit separation and
Congress would have wanted approval as we were the mother state.
Tennessee was the state that let to approval of womens suffrage with the admendment
vote needed which Tennessee O.K.'ed.
God Bless!!!!!!!!!!!!

3 If anyone teaches false doctrines and does not agree to the sound instruction of our Lord Jesus Christ and to godly teaching, 4 he is conceited and understands nothing. He has an unhealthy interest in controversies and quarrels about words that result in envy, strife, malicious talk, evil suspicions 5 and constant friction between men of corrupt mind, who have been robbed of the truth and who think that godliness is a means to financial gain. LAUGHING AT OURSELVES
***Blessed are those who can laugh at themselves for they shall never cease to be amused****** "Those who can't laugh at themselves leave the job to others." ***
481. NOT LOST FOR LONG
Two men were marooned on an Island. One man pased back and forth worried and scared while the other man sat back and was sunning himself. The first man said to the second man, "arn't you afraid we are about to die." "No," said the second man, "for you see I make $100,000 per week and I tithe faithfully to my church ever week. My Pastor will find me."
480. THE THREE ENVELOPES
The new preacher moves his things into his new office and comes across the former pastor, taking his items out. The former pastor says, "I left three envelopes in your desk. If you have any trouble, open them." Well, of course the new preacher thinks he will never have to use them, but in his youthful enthusiasm, he tries to change the order the kids march in during Vacation Bible School. Well, this makes the workers absolutely furious and there is a lot of ugly talk about the new pastor. He remembers the envelopes and opens the first one. It says, "You haven't been here long, but you decided to make a change in the Vacation Bible School; now everyone is mad. Tell everyone that the former preacher had told you this was how you preferred to do it." So the young preacher did that and it worked well.
He had been there about a year and a half when he tried to change the deacon position from being a life-long job to a position that rotated annually. Well, this made the deacons really mad, and they were the ones who made his salary recommendation. So he went back to the drawer and got the second envelope: "You did something to make the deacons mad and there's talk of replacing you. Tell them this is the official denominational policy; that you thought they wanted to comply, but it doesn't make you any difference what they do." He tried this, and again it worked great.
You guessed it. After three years, he finally told the women's organization that they were going to have to open the kitchen so that it could be used without a representative from the women's group being present. This put the women's organization in open revolt. So he went back to that third and final envelope: "You've been here about three years and you finally got the women's organization mad. The only thing to do is prepare three envelopes ... "

FAITH REVOLUTIONARIES STAND OUT FROM THE CROWD: Part 3
March 6, 2006(Ventura, CA) – The controversy fueled by George Barna’s current best-seller, Revolution, has raised many questions about the nature of the people the California-based researcher labels “revolutionaries.†Defined as born again people who have made their faith in God the highest priority in their life, who believe that their faith has greatly transformed their life, and who often express and experience their faith through alternative forms the Church, Barna this week released additional data about the beliefs, practices and lifestyle of revolutionaries in comparison to those who fit a more tame spiritual profile.
Revolutionaries possess some attributes that fail to distinguish them from other born again Christians. For instance, they are just as likely to embrace new technology, view movies just as often, a similar proportion of them are overweight, and equivalent percentages of the two groups consider themselves to live a simple life, to feel at peace, and to be in control of their life. Even in the spiritual realm, they have identical profiles when it comes to the frequency of fasting and how often they talk to non-believers about faith matters.
However, Barna also outlined four areas in which revolutionaries are substantially different than other born again adults, and vastly different from adults who are not born again.
Transformation Is Evident
Apart from the overt evidence of the changes that their faith in God has introduced into their lives, the national research revealed that while all revolutionaries, by definition, contend that their life has been greatly transformed by their faith, the same perspective is found among far fewer of the non-revolutionary born again adults (67%). ON THE RUN
Another Bowentown adventure. It is amazing how the Lord communicates with you when you are genuinely seeking Him. I am one of those strange people who enjoys running – well, most of the time anyway. This poem shows how the Lord is not 2000 years behind the times, but communicates with us in ways that are relevant to our circumstances and life.ON THE RUN
Running down the beach, exhausted I was feeling,
Reaching the end, before long I would be keeling.
So I stopped, taking some time to look around,
It was perfect, sea beaten rocks there did abound.
Stark cliffs, forcefully thrusting through the sand,
So powerful there, showing God’s mighty hand.
But from wee crags, big trees were able to grow,
A loving God too, one who we can get to know.
I sat down on a rock to rest my weary legs,
The water is close by, my attention it begs.
As I watched the meandering of the sea
The Lord said, "It has a meaning for thee."
So I looked through the rocks at the lip of a wave,
Rolling gently towards me, as though through a cave.
"Was the tide going out or was it coming in?"
"It could it be the Spirit", I thought with a grin.
I watched the waves, resting on my perch of ease,
Flitting in, sliding out, look at us! they did tease.
"What is it Lord, you’re trying to show me here?"
"Bide your time, my son, no need to shed a tear."
Patiently I waited as the waves lapped on the beach,
The Lord had a lesson, me he was trying to teach.
Yes, the tides coming in – no, maybe it’s going out,
My decision making process, churned all about.
I can see it now, for the water’s coming close,
An answer revealed, before I become morose!
"But what does it mean Lord, please reveal it to me,
This incoming tide, the meandering of your sea."
"Now I have your full attention, the time is here,
For in the right direction, you I will now steer.
The waves are those of My Spirit, my son,
With the tides of life, in and out, they do run."

A DAVID MUSING
Greetings again from Christchurch, here in the South Island of New Zealand. Kathy and I are enjoying seeing people we have not seen for a long time and places we haven't seen for even longer! It is Autumn now here in New Zealand. In the more temperate climate of the North Island where we live, the Autumn colours are not nearly as vibrant as here in the cooler south. The Autumn colours here are simply magnificent to see! Isn't God's creation wonderful?
Having had 3 days away from the computer (see - I am not completely addicted to it! Or so I try to convince myself!) I have lots of emails to catch up on. So I had better say goodbye for now and answer some.
So until next week...
