HYPE, SUBSTANCE, OR NEITHER?
If we are truly honest, one of the greatest challenges of the church today, particularly in the 'Spirit filled' streams, is the lack of large scale movements of Holy Spirit annointing in the church, particularly in Western churches. This century, which started with great anticipation of a final worldwide revival prior to the return of Jesus has, so far, proved to have been a huge disappointment.
So what has been our response?
While there are many different responses, two general categories stand out, in my observation.
The first group, the 'neither group', go through the traditional pentecostal form of worship (thanksgiving, praise, then worship) before preaching the Word and perhaps having an altar call. This process continues week after week with little variation, no major Holy Spirit presence, and little conviction or behavioral change in the congregation. Sadly, these have almost gone back to Old Testament ways.......
11 Day after day every priest stands and performs his religious duties; again and again he offers the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. (Hebrews 10:11)
The second group, the 'hype group', pretend that nothing has changed and create a 'pseudo Holy Spirit', primarily through noise. Noise of music, noise of shouting, and 'noisy' (unruly, human generated) behaviour. Once again there is no conviction of sin and no change in peoples behaviour. While Jesus talked about natural food, the same can be said of spiritual food.....
6 He replied, “Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is written: â€â€˜These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. 7 They worship me in vain; their teachings are but rules taught by men.’ (Mark 7:6-7)
Both these groups, in different ways, are yearning for past glory, for past movements of God. However well intentioned they may be, the way forward in God is always different to the past. For God desires to build His church into His image, as modeled by Jesus. I do trust you will agree that we haven't got there yet! So logically, there has to be a change, a further development in the process of sanctification (purification, Christ likeness) of His church, of His people.
So what is God doing today? I am not so presumptuous as to have all the answers. For God has a habit of proving us wrong! His ways are greater than ours and He certainly keeps us humble! However, maybe some of these thoughts will help us get some idea of the direction God may be heading in. You need to seek Him for confirmation, or otherwise.
'The church' is not a congregation, denomination or grouping which man sets up to honour, worship and work for God. No formal group, however well intentioned, has ever managed to become Jesus-like.
So what is the church?
In fact, the word 'church' as we understand it today, is a mistranslation of the Greek word 'ekklesia', incorrectly included by King James in the KJV, for he was head of the Church of England. Ekklesia is correctly translated "assembly" (or a congregating of people) from within a geographical area, normally a city, as it means "citizens called to assemble." It applied to groupings of people with a common interest, eg. industry guilds, and not just religious groups.
Jesus did not talk about 'the Church', but the 'kingdom'. The Gospels are all about the kingdom. So, if we really have to use the word church, the church is you, the church is me. We are not to look for the church in a building, in a congregation or in a denomination, for it is found in individual believers.
Don't believe me, believe Jesus.....
20 Once, having been asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, Jesus replied, “The kingdom of God does not come with your careful observation, 21 nor will people say, ‘Here it is,’ or ‘There it is,’ because the kingdom of God is within you.†(Luke 17:20-21)
Ultimately, the kingdom is a (spiritual, not physical) gathering of people of people in all the earth, with the mind of Christ, being fully submitted to Him through the guidance of the Holy Spirit.....
14 The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned. 15 The spiritual man makes judgments about all things, but he himself is not subject to any man’s judgment: 16 “For who has known the mind of the Lord
that he may instruct him?†But we have the mind of Christ. (1 Corinthians 2:14-16)
Jesus prayed for His disciples.....
13 “I am coming to you now, but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy within them. 14 I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world. 15 My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. 16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. 17 Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. 18 As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world. 19 For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified. (John 17:13-19)
Paul taught this too.....
14 I myself am convinced, my brothers, that you yourselves are full of goodness, complete in knowledge and competent to instruct one another. 15 I have written you quite boldly on some points, as if to remind you of them again, because of the grace God gave me 16 to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles with the priestly duty of proclaiming the gospel of God, so that the Gentiles might become an offering acceptable to God, sanctified by the Holy Spirit. (Romans 15:14-16)
I believe that this sanctification process is starting to take place in individual believers round the world who are prepared to be fully sold out to Jesus, those who are developing obedience to the will of the Father as shown to them by the Holy Spirit.
It is these sanctified ones who will see the fulfillment of the kingdom that has been prayed for in the church over the past 2000 years.....
10 your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. (Matthew 6:10)
Only then will Jesus return.
Amen.
FROM THE WORD
The Coming of the Kingdom of God"Once, having been asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, Jesus replied, “The kingdom of God does not come with your careful observation, nor will people say, ‘Here it is,’ or ‘There it is,’ because the kingdom of God is within you.†Then he said to his disciples, “The time is coming when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man, but you will not see it. Men will tell you, ‘There he is!’ or ‘Here he is!’ Do not go running off after them. For the Son of Man in his day will be like the lightning, which flashes and lights up the sky from one end to the other. But first he must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation. “Just as it was in the days of Noah, so also will it be in the days of the Son of Man. People were eating, drinking, marrying and being given in marriage up to the day Noah entered the ark. Then the flood came and destroyed them all. “It was the same in the days of Lot. People were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building. But the day Lot left Sodom, fire and sulfur rained down from heaven and destroyed them all. “It will be just like this on the day the Son of Man is revealed. On that day no one who is on the roof of his house, with his goods inside, should go down to get them. Likewise, no one in the field should go back for anything. 32 Remember Lot’s wife! Whoever tries to keep his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life will preserve it. I tell you, on that night two people will be in one bed; one will be taken and the other left. Two women will be grinding grain together; one will be taken and the other left.†“Where, Lord?†they asked. He replied, “Where there is a dead body, there the vultures will gather.â€" (Luke 17:20-37)
Wisdom From the Spirit
"We do, however, speak a message of wisdom among the mature, but not the wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing. No, we speak of God’s secret wisdom, a wisdom that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began. None of the rulers of this age understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. However, as it is written: “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love himâ€â€” but God has revealed it to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the man’s spirit within him? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us. This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words. The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned. The spiritual man makes judgments about all things, but he himself is not subject to any man’s judgment: “For who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct him?†But we have the mind of Christ." (1 Corinthians 2:6-16)
Jesus Prays for His Disciples
"“I have revealed you to those whom you gave me out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me and they have obeyed your word. Now they know that everything you have given me comes from you. For I gave them the words you gave me and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I came from you, and they believed that you sent me. I pray for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me, for they are yours. All I have is yours, and all you have is mine. And glory has come to me through them. I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name—the name you gave me—so that they may be one as we are one. While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe by that name you gave me. None has been lost except the one doomed to destruction so that Scripture would be fulfilled. “I am coming to you now, but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy within them. I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world. My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world. For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified." (John 17:6-19)

DAVID'S DOODLINGS
GODLINESS1250. 'Godliness' and 'self' are mutually exclusive.
1251. Godliness is like climbing to the top of the mountain. It takes effort, it can be chilly, there is little company, but the views from the summit are heavenly!
1252. Godliness is going 'down' in self in order to go 'up' in God.
1253. Godliness is available to us all, but only obtained by the few prepared to pay the life price.
1254. To the foolish, life in Christ is a security blanket, to the wise, a lifestyle, but to the godly, their very reason for being.
1255. The foolish try to change themselves, the wise allow God to change them, while the godly submit their very being to the Lord and His will for them.
1256. God redeems the foolish, loves the wise, but truly seeks the godly.
1257. We are happy to seek everything from God, but loath to give Him back everything of us, in return!
1258. We need to empty the house of our life, in order to make room for His replacement furniture.
1259. The simple choice of godliness - will 'I' or will 'I not' give God 'my will'!
1260. Godliness grows as me goes!
1261. Godliness is discovered in truly entering into God's rest.
1262 - 1271.
Godliness is...
....... putting God's heart in place of mine.
....... placing other's needs before my own.
....... keeping short accounts with God and others.
....... blessing God before myself.
....... giving myself to God because I truly love Him, without expecting a return.
....... absorbing the ridicule of others without reacting negatively.
....... being sold out to God's will for my life.
....... truly entering God's rest.
....... being prepared to die for my Lord.
....... Christ likeness.

THE CALLING OF THE FIRST DISCIPLES18 As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 19 “Come, follow me,†Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.†20 At once they left their nets and followed him. 21 Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them, 22 and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him. (Matthew 4:18-22)

LAUGHING AT OURSELVES
***Blessed are those who can laugh at themselves for they shall never cease to be amused****** "Those who can't laugh at themselves leave the job to others." ***
393. A MATTER OF PRIORITY
The Catholic Church's air conditioning broke down, so they hired a fellow named Higgins to crawl around in the ducts and figure out what was wrong. As Higgins peeked down through one of the vents in the sanctuary, he saw little old Mrs. Murphy kneeling by the altar, saying her rosary.
Being a bit of a rascal, Higgins decided it would be funny to try and mess with Mrs. Murphy's mind. In his most authoritative voice, Higgins said, "This is Jesus. Your prayers will be answered."
Mrs. Murphy didn't even blink; just kept on saying her rosary. Higgins tried again. "This is Jesus, the Son of God!" Higgins boomed. "Your prayers will be answered!"
At this, Mrs. Murphy looks up and yells, "Wait your turn, Lord. I'm talking to your Mother!"
392. TAKE FIVE
One Sunday, a preacher announced that he'd pass out miniature crosses made out of palm leaves.
"Put a cross in the room where your family argues the most," the preacher said. "When you look at the cross, it will remind you that God is watching."
As people were leaving the church, a woman walked up to the preacher, shook his hand and said, "I'll take five."
391. YOUR CHOICE
A church was running short of the finances that were needed to do some sorely needed repairs.
The Pastor worried over how he could motivate the congregation to come up with more money. To add to the Pastor's problems, just before the start of worship services he learned that the regular organist was sick and a substitute had been brought in at the last minute. The substitute wanted to know what to play.
"Here's a copy of the service," the Pastor said impatiently. "But you'll have to think of something appropriate to play after I make the announcement about the finances."
Following the Pastor's sermon, he paused and said, "Brothers and Sisters, we are in great difficulty. The church repairs are costing nearly twice as much as we expected, and we need $4,000 more. Any of you who can pledge $100 or more, please stand up."
At that moment, the substitute organist played "The Star-Spangled Banner."
And that is how the substitute became the regular organist!

LAST WEEKS QUESTION: What happened to Pontius Pilate after he sentenced Christ to be crucified?ANSWER: As could be expected, things went rapidly downhill from there. Pilate ended up killing himself in 36 AD after Caligula ordered him to come to Rome to explain his actions in the massacre of some Samaritans. It is unclear whether Caligula ordered the suicide or Pilate simply feared harsh punishment. (An inevitable judgment)

16. WET SWEAT
There are approximately 250,000 sweat glands in your feet and they sweat as much as 8 ounces of moisture per day. (Walking on water?)
17. NOT LOVED
Elton John’s first record, "I’ve Been Loving You" was released by Philips Records in England in 1968. Philips, not realising the potential of the soon-to-be superstar, released him in 1969, just before he teamed up with lyricist Bernie Taupin. (The song was a prophetic end to what could have been such a beautiful – and profitable – relationship!)
18. GETTING UP A SWEAT
There are round about 2 million sweat glands in the average human body. The average adult loses 540 calories with every litre of sweat. Men too, sweat about 40% more than women. (But women still use more deodorant!)

Ex-Muslim Speaks Out about 'The Koran Dilemma'
CBNnews.comIt's been 10 years since Muslim terrorists carried out the 9/11 attacks. Yet polls show that most Americans still have very little understanding of Islam.
CBN News recently spoke with one former Muslim who is looking to change that by revealing the politically incorrect truth about the Koran.
Al Fadi, a Saudi native, said it's no coincidence that a majority of the 9/11 hijackers came from Saudi Arabia.
"When I lived in Saudi Arabia, not only did I look at non-Muslims as second class, you would look at non-devout Muslims as second class citizens," Fadi told CBN News.
"If Islam has to prosper, be the superior religion, then certain steps must be taken by its followers, including spreading Islam at any cost, including the sword and killing any opposition," he said.
Real Life Under Islam
These days al Fadi, which is a pseudonym, lives in the West. He also left Islam for Christianity, a move that would bring a death sentence in his native country.
"The Koran will emphatically say in chapter 4, verse 157 that the crucifiction never took place, that someone else was made to look like Jesus and was put in his place," Fadi explained.
"So you learn all of these things and then of course you learn that the Koran tells you to hate the Christians and the Jews," he said.
Fadi wants to bring these bitter truths about Islam's holiest book to a Western audience. Like other former Muslims, he's written a book called 'The Qur'an Dilemma.'
The book analyzes the teachings of the Koran from the perspective of someone who actually lived under them.
According to Fadi, life under Islam is much different than the whitewashed version often presented by the Western media and Muslim pressure groups.
That includes the Koran's call to jihad, or "holy" war, against non-believers.
"It is basically a proscriptive demand found in the Koran when it comes to jihad - killing the infidels, spreading Islam until there is no other religion on earth except the religion of Allah," Fadi explained.
"The West does not know many, if not all, of these things because they're basically oblivious to what the Koran teaches as a whole. They're only fed portions of the Koran," he said.
Violent Turns
Those peaceful portions, Fadi says, came during the early stages in the career of Islam's prophet, Mohammed.
During these years, Mohammed lived in the Saudi city of Mecca with only a handful of followers.
His message changed dramatically once he moved to Medina and gained converts and political power.
Many of the Koranic verses from that later Medina period include calls to violence and intolerance.
Like chapter 8, verse 12: "I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve. Therefore strike off their heads and strike off every fingertip of them."
Then there is the infamous verse of the sword in chapter 9, verse 5: "Slay the idolaters wherever you find them and take them captives and besiege them and lie in wait for them in every ambush…."
Meanwhile, chapter 5, verse 51 warns Muslims not to befriend Jews and Christians.
Loving Your Enemies
Fadi said these later verses represent Mohammed's final say on the matter. Any older, more peaceful verses were cancelled out--or abrogated--by the later "revelations."
"You cannot stand against the religion, you cannot critique the prophet or the teaching of the Koran, and you cannot leave the religion because you're not free to do so," Fadi said. "There is no equality between genders, there is no equality between people of other faiths."
Fadi experienced this belief system firsthand growing up in Saudi Arabia, Mohammed's birthplace. He was a radical Wahhabi Muslim who knew members of the bin Laden family.
As a young man, Fadi wanted to follow in Osama bin Laden's footsteps and take on Soviets in Afghanistan.
"I was willing to go fight and die. And then that opportunity didn't take place," Fadi recalled.
That's when he decided to attend college in the West - in the very backyard of his sworn enemies. Fadi planned to promote Islam to anyone who would listen.
But a funny thing happened along the way. For the first time in his life, Fadi actually met and spent time with Christians.
"Basically, the more I met people who follow Christ, the more I realized that they are distinct and unique in their character. They're kind, they're patient, they're loving, they have moral values, they don't look at others with hatred," he recalled
"At some point I heard the teaching of Christ to love your enemies. Technically speaking, I am their enemy, and they didn't hate me, they actually loved me," he said.
Leaving Islam
Before long, Fadi was ready to do what had once been unthinkable: to accept Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. But the decision was not an easy one.
"For you to leave Islam, you are leaving your identity, your culture, your community, your family, everything that you grew up to believe to be true," he said. "There is no separation between state and mosque, state and religion."
Fadi's family in Saudi Arabia eventually came to grips with his leaving Islam. One of his brothers, however, still threatens his life on a regular basis.
But he said the threats won't stop him from telling the truth about his former religion.
Infiltrating the Infidels
"Muslims know very well that the best way to conquer is not by the sword anymore," Fadi said.
"It's by infiltrating the societies, the political systems, and by basically taking their time to grow, to become a majority that at some point, they will have a voice that they can topple things basically to their advantage," he said.
With The Qur'an Dilemma, Fadi hopes to ensure that never happens.

A DAVID MUSING
This week, in the Rugby World Cup, our All Black rugby team had a big win over Japan, a country we are particularly bonded to presently, as both have experienced natural disasters during the past year. A minutes silence was held before the match in memory of those from both countries killed in the earthquakes and tsunami. Our win was expected, and the manner of it, a relief to most New Zealanders. However, in sport, you must expect the unexpected. And that certainly came on Saturday night with the defeat of Australia by Ireland. There is a great rivalry between NZ and Australia on the sporting field, so we were not unhappy to see Ireland win! Of course, my mother was born in Ireland and my wife Kathy's maiden name was Kathleen Mary Healy! You can't get any more Irish than that! The win to Ireland though, turns the World Cup on its head, with the draw for the knockout stages to follow the pool games in 2-3 weeks time, likely to be very different to what was expected.
It reminds me of my walk with Jesus, which has turned out very different to what I expected. For He has the habit of doing the unexpected to me when life is getting too comfortable or predictable! That is His way, and we have to adjust to His desires for us.
How about you?
Until next week.......
MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOU BLESS GOD.
His servant and yours

WALKING WITH JESUS MINISTRIES is a non-profit, non-denominational, Bible based ministry located in Hastings, New Zealand. A ministry dedicated to developing discipleship, fostering unity amongst God’s people to achieve the Great Commission, and in doing so, preparing for Christ’s return. It is securely based upon the foundational principles of the Apostles Creed while recognising the wide and rich diversity of beliefs amongst Christians in other areas. In accordance with the Lord’s direction, materials produced by the ministry are available, free of charge, to genuine enquirers upon request. The ministry is solely funded by donations, as the Lord provides. A list of materials available (plus some fun!) is obtainable and freely downloadable from our websitewwj.org.nz or by contacting us as follows.

Our role is to bless and encourage those in ministry while promoting co-operation and unity of direction amongst the body of Christ, as emphasised 3 times by Jesus in His longest prayer, immediately prior to His arrest and crucifixion. "… so that they may be one as we are one." (John 17:12, 21, 23-4) Our website is currently being developed to encourage your participation one with another, to share resources, and to enable you to promote events and items of interest to the body as a whole – and have a smile while doing it!
