FROM THE WORD
THE WITHERED FIG TREE"In the morning, as they went along, they saw the fig tree withered from the roots. Peter remembered and said to Jesus, “Rabbi, look! The fig tree you cursed has withered!†“Have faith in God,†Jesus answered. “I tell you the truth, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart but believes that what says will happen, it will be done for him. Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.â€" (Mark 11:20-25)
JUDGING OTHERS
"“Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye. “Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and then turn and tear you to pieces." (Matthew 7:1-6)
FORGIVENESS FOR THE SINNER
"If anyone has caused grief, he has not so much grieved me as he has grieved all of you, to some extent—not to put it too severely. The punishment inflicted on him by the majority is sufficient for him. Now instead, you ought to forgive and comfort him, so that he will not be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow. I urge you, therefore, to reaffirm your love for him. The reason I wrote you was to see if you would stand the test and be obedient in everything. If you forgive anyone, I also forgive him. And what I have forgiven—if there was anything to forgive—I have forgiven in the sight of Christ for your sake, in order that Satan might not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes." (2 Corinthians 2:5-11)

DAVID'S DOODLINGS
ON REPENTANCE AND FORGIVENESS163. True repentance is - a godly principle applied.
164. Personal repentance is a verb, not an adjective.
165. True repentance is an action that results in a life changing reaction.
166. Show me one who walks in forgiveness and talks with their wallet, and I will show you a true believer.
167. It is amazing how a sprinkling of forgiveness can calm a raging sea of hurts.
168. Sadly, the human mind subtly subverts the holy, ‘I Am’, into the unholy, ‘I am’!
187. Forgiveness is unique. The more you give the more you get.
188. Forgiveness is the one thing you can have more of by giving it away.
189. There are two inexplicable things in life - that the bumblebee can fly and that the more forgiveness I give, the more I get.
190. Forgiveness flies away, a leaf borne by the wind, soon to be returned upon the wings of an angel.
378. Medicine heals the body, while forgiveness heals the soul.
379. Forgiveness is a mind soothing balm.
380. Repentance brings peace with God - forgiveness, peace with ones self.
381. The simplest way to avoid repentance is not to sin. All too often I forget to follow my own advice!

FROM YOU - TO ME -TO YOU
David, my brother,Warm Christian greetings from South Georgia, USA.
I just had to "write." How you knew that I preached on "Breaking out in Praise" (1 John 1:5-7)yesterday I don't know ;-) , but you sure hit the nail on the head in "God's Favorite Worship." I've worshiped in about as many different modes as there are, I think, from the formal and staid to the flamboyant charismatic, and I have been able to connect with God, both blessing and being blessed. My main desire is that those attending worship
be free to get excited and demonstrative if they are so impressed by the Holy Spirit, whether through the message, the music specials, prayer or whatever.
Having said that though, the greatest praise, the greatest worship, is obedience. It is that obedience that reflects the character of which you speak.
Praise the Lord! Don't you just feel like dancing?

Dear David,
Enjoyed PGIM as usual, although some of it was sobering.
Over the years, I have almost always been discouraged at how little evangelism went on in my churches, and how tough it is to get people to live a Biblical lifestyle. I had one church that was successful in may ways, but not in all. I claim no credit, it was the Holy Spirit and dedicated lay people. The congregation went from 18 to 300 in six months. I've never had another church do this, but despite that success, I never could get the majority of the congregation to tithe.
Maybe is pastors started worrying about the quality of Christian life, the church would make a difference here in the US and Honduras. It seems in Honduras, the mainline churches are worried more about social issues that spiritual issues. When will we learn (as in your bumble bee poem) that when we take care of the spiritual issues, God will deal with the social, because many will be resolved because we are leading lives of holiness.
Any a fund fact (which I remembered after reading about gold). One ounce of platinum (about the size of a pea) can be stretched into a wire 72 miles long.

LAUGHING AT OURSELVES
***Blessed are those who can laugh at themselves for they shall never cease to be amused****** "Those who can't laugh at themselves leave the job to others." ***
459.POOR GEOGRAPHY
A little girl from Minneapolis came home from Sunday school with a frown on her face. "I'm not going back there anymore," she announced with finality.
"I don't like the Bible they keep teaching us."
"Why not?" asked her astonished mother.
"Because," said the little girl, "that Bible is always talking about St. Paul, and it never once mentions Minneapolis."
458. MISPLACED IDENTITY
A Sunday School teacher asked a little boy, "Bobby, do you believe in the devil?"
"No," said the little boy. "He's just like Santa Claus. I think it's my daddy."
457. TOO BUSY
So few people know the Bible nowadays!
I was standing downtown waiting on a bus. It was raining cats and dogs. A lady was standing next to me so I tried to be friendly and make conversation. 'If it keeps it up, we'll all have to buy an ark," I said.
"What's an ark?" she asked.
'You mean you haven't heard about Noah and the great flood and all those animals?" I asked incredulously.
"Look, mister," she replied, "I've only been in town for four days. I've scarcely had time to read a paper."

FACTS FOR FUN
LAST WEEKS QUESTION: What is the sleeping sickness?ANSWER: Sleeping sickness, or encephalitis lethargica, was a strange disease that appeared in Europe suddenly in 1915. By 1918, the disease, which took many forms, had spread throughout the world. In some cases, victims fell into a coma and never woke up. Others died from days and days of NOT being able to sleep at all. The epidemic, which is estimated to have affected five million people, vanished mysteriously in 1927. Survivors didn't fare well. The long-term effects of the sleeping sickness, which had developed into a form of Parkinson's disease, had turned many patients into motionless ‘statues’. In March 1969, neurologist Oliver Sacks began to prescribe L-dopa, a drug used to treat Parkinson's disease, to sleeping sickness patients. The effect was extraordinary. Many began to ‘wake up’ and were suddenly, after decades of not moving, able to walk and talk and think. Some patients believed they were still in the 1920s! Sadly though, many patients on L-dopa began to suffer from involuntary movements, bizarre motions and notions, and other serious symptoms. (Maybe we all would if we woke up 40 years in the future!)

PUN(ISHMENT)
THE DOGI got a laugh our of your Facts for Fun section last week and this week. The question about the dog in a Shakespeare play? My college roommate and I always said the dog was in MacBeth. Lady MacBeth keeps trying to throw him out of the castle in the middle of the night - after all, she keeps waking up and saying, "Out, out, damn Spot."
Yes, I know it's a bad joke . . . but I thought I'd share it anyway. (They all are! David)
REMEMBRANCE
Once a year, the collectors of antique tents in Germany get together for a rally. Last year, the organizers decided to hold it in Meinz. Unfortunately, the local burghers took a dim view of so great an influx of tourists ruining their turf with tent pegs. The citizens organized themselves so thoroughly that they even had an anthem:
"Let Old and Quaint Tents Be Forgot and Never Brought to Meinz!"
BUGZIE
Bugzie had been sentenced to prison for a long time. They did not know that he was a mechanical genius when they placed him in charge of the chicken yard. He would go about picking up pieces of metal and wood. He made an engine and some wings. One day, at roll call they found that he had placed the engine and wings on the chicken shed and flown the coop.
SUPER SOCCER
Followers of the tiny Scottish soccer club Inverness Caledonian-Thistle refer to the club as "Caley." The team delighted fans last winter when it eliminated heavily favored Glasgow Celtic 3-1 in the Scottish Cup.
The upset prompted this headline in the British tabloid the Sun:
"Super Caley Go Ballistic, Celtic Are Atrocious,"
Much more punishment here!
MANNERS AND CUSTOMS IN BIBLICAL LANDS
DANCINGDancing often formed part of the entertainment at feasts. When the prodigal son returned, there was joyous (for most!) singing and dancing. (Luke 15:24-5) Usually, it was the women and girls who danced, although sometimes, men did too. For example, King David in front of the Ark, much to the disgust of one of his wives, King Saul's daughter, Michal. (2 Samuel 6:14) However, there is no record of men and women dancing together.

COMMITMENT TO GOD IN THE USA - A BARNA SURVEY (Part 4 of 4)
Surveys Show Pastors Claim Congregants Are Deeply Committed to God But Congregants Deny It!January 9, 2006
(Ventura, CA) – How committed to God are Americans? It depends who you ask. Two new national surveys conducted by The Barna Group provide a glimpse into the contradictory views of church pastors and the people who attend churches, suggesting that the optimistic views of pastors are not justified. There is a huge gap between the perception of pastors and the reality of people’s devotion to God.
The Measures Dictate the Outcomes
According to George Barna, the best-selling author of books such as Revolution, The Habits of Highly Effective Churches, and The Second Coming of the Church, two well-known adages summarize the situation. “It has been said that ‘you get what you measure’ and that ‘you see what you want to see.’ Both of those sayings go a long way toward describing the assessment problem that plagues churches today,†he stated. “The only way to explain the enormous gap between the perceptions of pastors and the reality of people’s lives is to understand that pastors evaluate spiritual health from an institutional perspective – that is, are people involved in keeping the system going – while people are aware of their unmet need to have a deeper and more meaningful relationship with God.â€
Barna, whose firm conducted both national surveys, felt that the information could help churches reconsider how they evaluate their ministry. “The nation’s adults deserve some credit for recognizing and acknowledging that God is not a top priority in their life. The challenge to church leaders is to stop pandering for popularity and to set the bar higher. People only live up to the expectations set for them. When the dominant expectations are that people show up, play nicely together and keep the system going, the potential for having the kinds of life-changing experiences that characterized the early Church are limited, at best. If churches believe in the life-changing power of the gospel and the Holy Spirit, they must hold people to a higher and more challenging standard.â€
“There has never been a time,†the researcher continued, “when American society was in more dire need of the Christian Church to provide a pathway to a better future. Given the voluminous stream of moral challenges, and the rampant spiritual hunger that defines our culture today, this should be the heyday for biblical ministry. As things stand now, we have become content with placating sinners and filling auditoriums as the marks of spiritual health.â€

The data reported in this summary are based upon two telephone surveys conducted in October and November 2005. One survey included interviews with a nationwide random sample of 1002 adults, 18 years of age or older. The maximum margin of sampling error associated with the aggregate sample in this survey is ±3.2 percentage points at the 95% confidence level. All non-institutionalized adults in the 48 contiguous states were eligible to be interviewed and the distribution of respondents in the survey sample corresponds to the geographic dispersion of the U.S. adult population. The data were subjected to slight statistical weighting procedures to calibrate the survey base to national demographic proportions. Households selected for inclusion in the survey sample received multiple callbacks to increase the probability of obtaining a representative distribution of adults.
The other survey was conducted among 627 Senior Pastors of Protestant churches across the nation, distributed proportionally among denominations. The maximum margin of sampling error associated with the aggregate sample in this survey is ±4 percentage points at the 95% confidence level. Churches included in the survey sample were located within the 48 continental states and received multiple callbacks to increase the probability of obtaining a representative distribution of pastors and churches.
The Barna Group, Ltd. (which includes its research division, The Barna Research Group) is a privately held, for-profit corporation that conducts primary research, produces audio, visual and print media, and facilitates the healthy spiritual development of leaders, children, families and Christian ministries. MR BUMBLE (Instalment 4 of 4)
This poem was 2 years in the writing! The inspiration came, half was written, then I got busy on other things! In the last day or two I have had some spare time, so thought to finish it. (Actually I have had more spare time during the two years but never quite got 'a round tuit'!) I hope the result is worth waiting for! Third part today.MR BUMBLE
"I feel a lot better now," said Mr Bumble,
"To see you on your knees, so humble,
Maybe I can fly again without a fumble,
I'll give it a good go - LET'S NOW RUMBLE!
Wings flapping,
Slowly at first,
Then revving,
Give it a burst!
Now into the air again, Mr Bumble flew,
"Yes, I can still fly!" that he now knew,
Up, up, into the blue,
Buzz, buzz, it's true!
There are two lessons here, in life to be learned,
Neither pull another down, nor be the one spurned,
For word's are so powerful you see,
When taken and used by our enemy.
We're to encourage one another to fly high,
Sometimes it's difficult, but let's give it a try.
Yes, twill give a whole new outlook on life,
As well as keeping Mr Bumble, out of strife!
For the 'Fruit of the Spirit' we are to develop,
Yes, love, peace and joy, our life will envelop.
So when we meet the Mr Bumbles of our daily walk,
We can help them fly higher, through our godly talk.
('Artistic Licence' has been taken in describing the nesting habits of the bumble bee. Unlike honey bees, they are solitary creatures! But that would spoil a good story!)

A DAVID MUSING
This year, God has got me to spend more, and better quality, time with Him. Instead of spending an hour listening to the news on the radio in the mornings to become 'better informed', I am now spending that time (in addition to what I was already doing) becoming 'God informed', both through reading the Word and in prayer. We can be addicted to many things that seem good on the surface, and which, in themselves, may be good, but they waste time and keep us from prioritising God into first place in our lives.
I still watch, read and hear a lot of news, keeping me up with the day's happenings, but now the 'Good News' as opposed the generally 'bad news' of the media, is helping me get still closer to my Savior and Lord.
This has put a smile on God's (invisible) face! Not sure about the theology - but it's real to me! How about you?
So until next week...
MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOU BLESS GOD.
His servant and yours
David Tait
