TRANSITION FROM 'THE CHURCH' TO 'THE KINGDOM'

A new series, looking at the some of the changes we need to make to move from a 'church' to a 'kingdom' mindset. (See the last 4 weeks of PGIM)

FROM “ME” TO “HIM”

What has been the key result of the Industrial and Knowledge Revolutions over the past 500 years on us as individuals?

Is it an increase in comfort levels, provided by a greater abundance of material goods? Well, many of us have a lot more 'things' than did our forbears. Is it more time? Definitely not that! Is it a better world? Well, yes and no.

I would suggest that the greatest result, one that has affected and influenced all the others, is the societal change from the focus on a group, be it a family or nation, to self-centeredness. For today's world is based round 'what is good for me'. Rooted in Greek philosophy, this concept of 'humanism' has developed most rapidly as material goods and knowledge have expanded, until today, most of us live in humanistic societies of one form or another.

Sadly, this unbiblical, humanist perspective, has penetrated deep into the culture of the church too. We preach a 'happy chappy' (along with, in Spirit filled churches, a 'happy clappy') gospel. A gospel based on individual happiness and prosperity. This is patently false. If it was true, the whole world would be flocking through our doors! For this is what the world seeks, but not what the Word teaches.

The prime commandment of Jesus says.....

28 One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, “Of all the commandments, which is the most important?” 29 “The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ 31 The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.” (Mark 12:28-31)

We are called to substitute the 'me' with 'Him'. And to put 'others' interests on a par with 'our own'. Paul explains, that in reality, this means putting others even ahead of ourselves.....

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. 4 Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. (Philippians 2:3-4)

Paul goes on to reinforce this, by telling us to follow the example of Jesus.....

5 Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, 7 but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death— even death on a cross! 9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (Philippians 2:5-11)

This is hard for us, brought up in a humanistic world, to understand - and even harder to live! Yet it is what Jesus requires of us to truly be His followers. His sacrifice for us was complete and we are required to sacrifice our lives for Him too.....

7 Get rid of the old yeast that you may be a new batch without yeast—as you really are. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. (1 Corinthians 5:7)

Jesus reinforced this when He said.....

50 For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.” (Matthew 12:50)

As Jesus was rejected by His generation.....

25 But first he must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation. (Luke 17:25)

.....so we are likely to be by ours.....

4 As you come to him, the living Stone—rejected by men but chosen by God and precious to him (1 Peter 2:4)

....but our rewards are amazing and eternal.....

5 you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. (1 Peter 2:5)

The amazing thing is that as we take our eyes off ourselves and place them onto Him, He really comes alive to us as He prepares us to be a part of the bride for which He is returning.....

29 The bride belongs to the bridegroom. The friend who attends the bridegroom waits and listens for him, and is full of joy when he hears the bridegroom’s voice. That joy is mine, and it is now complete. 30 He must become greater; I must become less. (John 3:29-30)

.....and we enjoy the joy of the Lord.....

17 For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit, (Romans 14:17)

HALLELUJAH!

Amen.

FROM THE WORD

The Coming of the Kingdom of God

"Once, having been asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, Jesus replied, “The kingdom of God does not come with your careful observation, nor will people say, ‘Here it is,’ or ‘There it is,’ because the kingdom of God is within you.” Then he said to his disciples, “The time is coming when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man, but you will not see it. Men will tell you, ‘There he is!’ or ‘Here he is!’ Do not go running off after them. For the Son of Man in his day will be like the lightning, which flashes and lights up the sky from one end to the other. But first he must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation. “Just as it was in the days of Noah, so also will it be in the days of the Son of Man. People were eating, drinking, marrying and being given in marriage up to the day Noah entered the ark. Then the flood came and destroyed them all. “It was the same in the days of Lot. People were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building. But the day Lot left Sodom, fire and sulfur rained down from heaven and destroyed them all. “It will be just like this on the day the Son of Man is revealed. On that day no one who is on the roof of his house, with his goods inside, should go down to get them. Likewise, no one in the field should go back for anything. Remember Lot’s wife! Whoever tries to keep his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life will preserve it. I tell you, on that night two people will be in one bed; one will be taken and the other left. Two women will be grinding grain together; one will be taken and the other left.” “Where, Lord?” they asked. He replied, “Where there is a dead body, there the vultures will gather.”" (Luke 17:20-37)

Imitating Christ’s Humility

"If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death— even death on a cross! Therefore God exalted him to the highest place
and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father." (Philippians 2:1-11)

The Living Stone and a Chosen People

"As you come to him, the living Stone—rejected by men but chosen by God and precious to him— you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For in Scripture it says: “See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and precious cornerstone, and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame.” Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe, “The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone,” and, “A stone that causes men to stumble and a rock that makes them fall.”
They stumble because they disobey the message—which is also what they were destined for. But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. Dear friends, I urge you, as aliens and strangers in the world, to abstain from sinful desires, which war against your soul. Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us." (1 Peter 2:4-12)

DAVID'S DOODLINGS

RELIGION, REVELATION AND GOD'S KINGDOM

1043. Revelation formalised soon becomes religion institutionalised.

1044. God's kingdom breeds revelation, religion, rules.

1045. Religion is man's adaptation of God's revelation.

1046. When religion fails you, turn to God.

1047. So often the church attempts to compete with God's kingdom rather than promoting it.

1048. God's vision is our mission.

1049. Religion is the eager repository of yesterday's revelation.

1050. Revelation is eternal truth meeting today's circumstances.

1051. Revelation is from God's heart, religion, a product of the heart of man.

1052. Today's revelation becomes tomorrow's religion.

572. WAKE UP
My two-year-old daughter, Paige, was with her mother while her older sister was being examined by a dentist. Paige kept herself busy playing with toys in the waiting room until she noticed that her mom was resting, her eyes closed.

With about six other patients waiting, Paige marched up to her mother, looked her straight in the face and shook her shoulder.

"Mommy," she yelled, "wake up! This is not church!"

My wife, Lani, woke from her doze to the sound of other patients laughing.

FACTS FOR FUN

LAST WEEKS QUESTION: What is a ‘red dog’?

ANSWER: It all depends! If you're talking about American football, a ‘red dog’ is an old term for a gridiron play in which defensive players rush the quarterback for a quick tackle. (Called a ‘blitz’ today.) In finance, ‘red dog’ was a nineteenth-century term for a kind of bank note stamped with red ink. At cards, a ‘red dog’ is a game in which each player holds five cards and bets that he holds the higher card than the top card remaining on the deck. Finally, ‘red dog’ or ‘red dog flour’ refers to the lowest grade of flour in milling, which is generally used to feed farm animals. (Black, brown and white dogs now feel quite left out!)

THIS WEEK'S QUESTION: Is May Day a pagan holiday or a worker's holiday?

Answer Next Week.

SOME FUN FACTS

945. LARGE SPOTS
Dark spots called sunspots, far larger than the earth’s diameter, move over the sun’s surface, expanding and contracting as they go, some reaching up to 80,000km (50,000 miles) across. (But we sometimes still dare to think that the universe revolves round us!)

946. "THAT'S ALL, FOLKS!"
Mel Blanc, the voice of Bugs Bunny was allergic to carrots! Yet he had to crunch into them, for a carrot sound is unique. ‘The Man of 1100 Voices’ would crunch, then ‘spit ‘em out’. (Did “That’s all, folks!” the epitaph on his headstone, really mean, relief at no more carrots?)

947. ‘DONTDONT’
Sadly, the last dodo bird died in 1681. (An early environmental ‘nono’?)

GREAT GROANERS

121. QUICK QUESTION
Why is five o'clock in the morning like a pig's tail?

It's twirly.

122. FLAT-LINED
I work in a busy office where a computer going down causes quite an inconvenience. Recently one of our computers not only crashed, it made a noise that sounded like a heart
monitor. "This computer has flat-lined," a co-worker called out with mock horror.

"Does anyone here know how to do mouse-to-mouse?"

123. TWO BROOMS
Two brooms were hanging in the closet and after a while they got to know each other so well, they decided to get married.

One broom was, of course, the bride broom and the other the groom broom. The bride broom looked very beautiful in her white dress. The groom broom was handsome and suave in his tuxedo. The wedding was lovely.

After the wedding at the wedding dinner, the bride broom leaned over and said to the groom broom "I think I am going to have a little whisk broom!!!"

"IMPOSSIBLE!!" said the groom broom. "We haven't even swept together!"

124. THE ROTTWEILER
A man takes his Rottweiler to the vet. "My dog's cross-eyed, is there anything you can do for him?"

"Well," says the vet, "let's have a look at him."

So he picks the dog up and examines his eyes, then checks his teeth. Finally, he says "I'm going to have to put him down."

"What? Because he's cross-eyed?"

"No, because he's really heavy."

125. WATCH YOUR LANGUAGE
A married man had only one complaint: his wife was always nursing sick birds. One February evening, he came home to find a raven with a splint on its wing sitting in his
favorite chair. On the dining room table, instead of dinner, there was a feverish eagle pecking at an aspirin. In the kitchen, his wife was comforting a shivering little wren
she found out in the snow.

The furious husband strode over to where his wife was toweling down the cold little bird. "I can't take it any more! We've got to get rid of all of these #(@ birds!"

The wife held up her hand and cut him off in mid-sentence. "Please, Dear, no cuss words in front of the chilled wren."

126. I'M SORRY
I was being shown round a cheese factory the other day, when I fell into a giant vat of milk by-product.

"I'm sorry", I said.

"Am I in your whey?"

Churches bringing Christ's love to Syrian refugees

Syria (MNN) ¯ More than 2.5 million people in Syria can't go home because of violent, ongoing fighting, a United Nations refugee agency said yesterday.

"This is a very conservative estimate," said Melissa Fleming, spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). "People are moving, really on the run, hiding. They are difficult to count and access."

More than 407,000 refugees have either registered or are awaiting registration in UNHCR refugee camps in the neighboring countries of Lebanon, Turkey, Jordan, and Iraq, added Fleming. And don't forget about the flurry of activity in recent days.

Over the past week, more than 4,000 Syrians fled to Jordan--the highest outflow there in two months. Another 9,000 Syrians crossed into Turkey, and growing numbers of Kurdish nationals are fleeing to Iraq, now the home of 50,000 Syrian refugees.

What are Christians doing about it?

"We're really challenging the church to reach those refugees," says a ministry leader helped by Christian Aid Mission in the regions surrounding Syria. "Not just in providing aid materials, but that they would show God's love to those people."

Christian Aid helps indigenous ministries provide Syrian refugees with essentials like food, cooking units, blankets and shelter.

"Plus, we're providing milk for the children," adds the ministry worker. "That's one of the big needs because about 65% of the refugees there are children."

In addition to providing relief aid, believers make a point of spending one-on-one time with refugees. In Iraq, churches take turns on a regular basis inviting refugees to a church meeting followed by a meal. They also go daily to the refugee camps to clean, construct temporary housing, share the Gospel, and distribute food.

"They make sure that they speak with them, spend time, play with the kids," the worker says, "just that they will feel [that] somebody cares about them."

According to the ministry leader, refugees must go to the offices of other organizations who are giving aid, such as the Muslim Brotherhood, in order to receive help. That's something that sets their operations apart: ministries helped by Christian Aid make a point of being directly involved in refugees' lives.

He describes how this impacts refugees: "What we're hearing from them, the feedback is: 'We feel that you're giving us from all over your heart, with love, with care."

Their actions and regular demonstration of compassion is also changing what many refugees thought about Christ-followers.

"Some of them, or maybe most of them, had the wrong idea about Christ and about Christianity," the worker explains. Refugees can now see Christ's love expressed through Christian workers.

"We praise God we have this opportunity to reach them, not just with the aid but spiritually," he says.

Pray for protection over Christian workers who are helping refugees. Ask God to give them wisdom.

"In some areas… it's dangerous just to be with the refugees," the worker explains. "With your prayers, we can still be alive and do God's work, and we can make the Great Commission a daily commitment."

WAXING LYRICAL

This poem arose out of the unexpected, untimely death of a very good friend's daughter. Why God, why!

But still, life continues on for us who are left, until our turn comes to meet our maker.

GONE!

Life's short.
Death's caught.
Comes to all.
Small and tall.

It's good to grieve one who did leave,
But life goes on, loved one gone.
How can we cope - sit round and mope?
From dust to dust, in God we trust.

He seems far away,
As we try to pray!
"Where are you now Lord!
You've broken the cord!"

"I am still here for you, my child,
Know that, with Me, you're wild.
But death, it will ever be,
Until earth, is sin free.

Look up, look up, my son,
Into my arms, do now run,
I am always here for you,
Believe it - it is true.

I so understand your sorrow,
As in My path you do follow.
Gave my Son to die for you,
Grief was in My heart, too.

My ways are different to yours,
Yes, mine is a greater cause.
But with death comes eternal life,
No more worry, no more strife...
When your life you do put in my hand,
With me, for eternity, will you stand.

In Jesus now, you must surely rest,
It's through Him, you pass the test.

Come, my friend, rest in my embrace,
Yes, I am with you, in life's race.
One day too, you will reach the finishing line,
I'll meet you there - your hand clasped in mine."

A DAVID MUSING

Business here at our clothing charity shops in New Zealand, is up and down at the moment. One day you think everyone has deserted you, and the next, lots more people turn up. It seems to be a sign of the times, not just in New Zealand, bur worldwide. We simply don't know what is coming next.

I sense this same uncertainty in the church world also. Many people are operating on remote. Dissatisfied with their spiritual lives, but not knowing where to turn to for the answers.

For me, there is only one answer, and that is to turn to Jesus. We are not to follow a man, woman, or religious system. For all suffer the same human frailties that afflict us all.

Jesus is calling us to Him. He wants to walk and talk with us, to become involved in every moment of our lives. To be with us through bad times and good.

The question is, "Are we prepared to seek and trust Him to lead and guide us? Are we truly prepared to 'walk with Jesus'?"

Until next week.....

MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOU BLESS GOD

His servant and yours
