TRANSITION FROM 'THE CHURCH' TO 'THE KINGDOM'

A new series, looking at the some of the changes we need to make to move from a 'church' to a 'kingdom' mindset. (See the last 12 weeks of PGIM)

FROM “PAID” TO “CALLED” continued

Remember from last week.....

'The first requirement for specific ministry (of course, we are all to be ministers - literally, servants!), is a definite call from God through the Holy Spirit.'

The second requirement is to be prepared to do what God calls you to, irrespective of the cost.

The one thing I can assure you of is, a true, godly ministry call will require sacrifice on our part! As it did of Jesus, on the cross.....

9 Then he said, “Here I am, I have come to do your will.” He sets aside the first to establish the second. 10 And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. (Hebrews 10:9-10)

All believers are called to imitate Christ and to sacrifice our lives through love.....

Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children 2 and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. (Ephesians 5:1-2)

Examples of 'love sacrifice' in the New Testament include Paul who wrote from prison.....

17 But even if I am being poured out like a drink offering on the sacrifice and service coming from your faith, I am glad and rejoice with all of you. (Philippians 2:17)

.....while Stephen was a literal sacrifice....

The Stoning of Stephen

54 When they heard this, they were furious and gnashed their teeth at him. 55 But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. 56 “Look,” he said, “I see heaven open and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.” 57 At this they covered their ears and, yelling at the top of their voices, they all rushed at him, 58 dragged him out of the city and began to stone him. Meanwhile, the witnesses laid their clothes at the feet of a young man named Saul. 59 While they were stoning him, Stephen prayed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” 60 Then he fell on his knees and cried out, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” When he had said this, he fell asleep. (Acts 7:54-60)

And the Apostles.....

39 But if it is from God, you will not be able to stop these men; you will only find yourselves fighting against God.” 40 His speech persuaded them. They called the apostles in and had them flogged. Then they ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. 41 The apostles left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing because they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name (Acts 5:39-41)

In the future, as the world continues to ramp up its opposition to the Gospel, these experiences will become more and more frequent, both in the spiritual and the literal!

For me, so far, the cost has been primarily financial. When I was called into full time ministry, I used the money we had acquired from the sale of our mail order business, to undertake a property development. The idea was to build and rent out house to support ourselves, so that we didn't have to rely on others. An excellent idea - in the human! Prices went down, costs went up and we lost it all!

"Now you will be reliant upon me!" said the Lord. A lesson not forgotten and still lived by.

I appreciate this is a hard word for many to accept, but kingdom ministry is based on trust in God to provide, not a wage. On faith, not security. On being called, not simply applying for a job.

It costs everything but the rewards are eternal.

Are we prepared to pay the price?

FROM THE WORD

"Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people. Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving. For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person—such a man is an idolater—has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God’s wrath comes on those who are disobedient. Therefore do not be partners with them. For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) and find out what pleases the Lord. Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. For it is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. But everything exposed by the light becomes visible, for it is light that makes everything visible. This is why it is said: “Wake up, O sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.” Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is. Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit. Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ." (Ephesians 5:1-21)

Paul and the False Apostles

"I hope you will put up with a little of my foolishness; but you are already doing that. I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy. I promised you to one husband, to Christ, so that I might present you as a pure virgin to him. But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent’s cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ. For if someone comes to you and preaches a Jesus other than the Jesus we preached, or if you receive a different spirit from the one you received, or a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it easily enough. But I do not think I am in the least inferior to those “super-apostles.” I may not be a trained speaker, but I do have knowledge. We have made this perfectly clear to you in every way. Was it a sin for me to lower myself in order to elevate you by preaching the gospel of God to you free of charge? I robbed other churches by receiving support from them so as to serve you. And when I was with you and needed something, I was not a burden to anyone, for the brothers who came from Macedonia supplied what I needed. I have kept myself from being a burden to you in any way, and will continue to do so. As surely as the truth of Christ is in me, nobody in the regions of Achaia will stop this boasting of mine. Why? Because I do not love you? God knows I do! And I will keep on doing what I am doing in order to cut the ground from under those who want an opportunity to be considered equal with us in the things they boast about. For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, masquerading as apostles of Christ. And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. It is not surprising, then, if his servants masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions deserve.

Paul Boasts About His Sufferings

I repeat: Let no one take me for a fool. But if you do, then receive me just as you would a fool, so that I may do a little boasting. In this self-confident boasting I am not talking as the Lord would, but as a fool. Since many are boasting in the way the world does, I too will boast. You gladly put up with fools since you are so wise! In fact, you even put up with anyone who enslaves you or exploits you or takes advantage of you or pushes himself forward or slaps you in the face. To my shame I admit that we were too weak for that! What anyone else dares to boast about—I am speaking as a fool—I also dare to boast about. Are they Hebrews? So am I. Are they Israelites? So am I. Are they Abraham’s descendants? So am I. Are they servants of Christ? (I am out of my mind to talk like this.) I am more. I have worked much harder, been in prison more frequently, been flogged more severely, and been exposed to death again and again. Five times I received from the Jews the forty lashes minus one. Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was stoned, three times I was shipwrecked, I spent a night and a day in the open sea, I have been constantly on the move. I have been in danger from rivers, in danger from bandits, in danger from my own countrymen, in danger from Gentiles; in danger in the city, in danger in the country, in danger at sea; and in danger from false brothers. I have labored and toiled and have often gone without sleep; I have known hunger and thirst and have often gone without food; I have been cold and naked. Besides everything else, I face daily the pressure of my concern for all the churches. Who is weak, and I do not feel weak? Who is led into sin, and I do not inwardly burn? If I must boast, I will boast of the things that show my weakness. The God and Father of the Lord Jesus, who is to be praised forever, knows that I am not lying. In Damascus the governor under King Aretas had the city of the Damascenes guarded in order to arrest me. But I was lowered in a basket from a window in the wall and slipped through his hands.

Paul’s Vision and His Thorn

I must go on boasting. Although there is nothing to be gained, I will go on to visions and revelations from the Lord. I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven. Whether it was in the body or out of the body I do not know—God knows. And I know that this man—whether in the body or apart from the body I do not know, but God knows— was caught up to paradise. He heard inexpressible things, things that man is not permitted to tell. I will boast about a man like that, but I will not boast about myself, except about my weaknesses. Even if I should choose to boast, I would not be a fool, because I would be speaking the truth. But I refrain, so no one will think more of me than is warranted by what I do or say. To keep me from becoming conceited because of these surpassingly great revelations, there was given me a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me. Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong." (2 Corinthians 11:1-12:10)

DAVID'S DOODLINGS

MINISTRY

1194. A key difference between the Old and New Testaments is that we are now all in ministry. How easy it is to forget this!

1195. Ministry is not simply for the professionals, but the call upon all believers.

1196. The most effective ministry of all, is our life!

1197. The world's most effective ministry is unspoken! For it is our life!

1198. If all our talk was turned into action, the whole world would have been converted many times over!

1199. Mature ministry is based upon actions rather than words.

1200. Ministry truly is a corporate responsibility.

1201. To be called to minister is both an honour, and the responsibility of us all.

1202. The temptation for professional ministry is to become priests rather than servants.

1203. Ministry, put simply, is being Jesus to others.

1204. Ministry is the call upon us all!

1205. To be a minister we don't have to be trained in Jesus, but simply reflect the Jesus in us.

1206. If we were all prepared to minister, fulfilling the Great Commission would be a breeze!

1207. Many ministers make light work!

1208. To the Christian, ministry is a requirement, not a calling.

1209. Professional ministry is a great excuse to leave God's work to someone else!

1210. Ministry is service, not position.

1211. Priests instruct, ministers serve.

1212. The 'priesthood of believers' is the latent power of the church. When released, it transforms the world.

1213. The ministry of example is the most powerful ministry of all.

1214. The true hallmark of ministry is not professionalism, but service.

LAUGHING AT OURSELVES

***Blessed are those who can laugh at themselves for they shall never cease to be amused***

*** Those who can't laugh at themselves leave the job to others. ***

599. REFRESHED
The minister gave his Sunday morning service, as usual, but this particular Sunday, it was considerably longer than normal.

Later, at the door, shaking hands with parishioners as they moved out, one man said, "Your sermon, Pastor, was simply wonderful - so invigorating and inspiring and refreshing."

The minister of course, broke out in a big smile, only to hear the man say, "Why I felt like a new man when I woke up!"

597. THE FUNERAL
A minister well known for his beautiful singing voice came home visibly upset after consulting with a new widow about funeral plans for her recently deceased husband. His wife asked him what was wrong, and he revealed that the wife had asked him to sing her
husband's favorite song, "Jingle Bells," at the funeral. He was troubled that it wasn't appropriate to the solemn occasion. He struggled and prayed about it, and finally decided to honor the grieving widow's wishes.

At the funeral, still sensitive about how some of the mourners might react to hearing "Jingle Bells" at a funeral, he carefully introduced the song with words about appreciating the sense of humor and lightheartedness of the deceased. The widow had been very tearful during the service. Hearing the introduction to her late husband's
"favorite song" she sat up and began to appear quite interested. As the preacher began the song, the widow began to smile, and her tears dried up. She was actually giggling as he concluded, and he felt glad he'd decided to honor her request since it obviously had been so comforting.

After the service she thanked the pastor for sharing his music ministry, and with a big grin she added, "Actually, pastor, the favorite song I requested was 'RING them Bells!'"

LIFES A LAUGH

241. TRAVELLING LIGHT
Recently, I called to make reservations on a small charter plane that departs from Teterboro airport in New Jersey.

I knew that I would be flying in a very small plane, so I was not surprised when the clerk said, "The plane is very, full with baggage and passengers." Then she asked, "How
much do you weigh, sir?"

Not thinking clearly I answered, "With or without clothes?"

"Well," said the clerk, "how do you intend to travel?"

242. GOOD STUFF
An amateur photographer was invited to dinner with friends and took along a few pictures to show the hostess. She looked at the photos and commented "These are very good! You must have a good camera."

He didn't make any comment, but, as he was leaving to go home he said "That was a really
delicious meal! You must have some very good pots."

243. DOUBLE
Dining out one evening, I noticed six teenage boisterously celebrating some event at a nearby table. Toward their end of their meal, one of them got up and produced a camera. "Hey, wait a minute," one of her companions said. "You have to be in the picture too."

When I approached and asked if I could help, the girl who owned the camera was delighted. I snapped a picture of the group and then, being unfamiliar with the camera, I asked her, "Do you want me to take another in case that one doesn't come out?" "Oh, no, that's okay," she chirped innocently. "I always get the double prints."

244. THE ALIBI
A man goes to a party and has too much to drink. His friends plead with him to let them take him home. He says no, he only lives a mile away. About five blocks from the party, the police pull him over for weaving and ask him to get out of the car and walk the line.

Just as he starts, the police radio blares out a notice of a robbery taking place in a house just a block away. The police tell the party animal to stay put, they will be right back and they hop a fence and run down the street to the robbery. The guy waits and waits and finally decides to drive home.

When he gets there, he tells his wife he is going to bed, and to tell anyone who might come looking for him that he has the flu and has been in bed all day.

A few hours later the police knock on the door. They ask if Mr. X lives there and his wife says yes. They ask to see him and she replies that he is in bed with the flu and has been so all day. The police have his driver's license. They ask to see his car and she asks why. They insist on seeing his car, so she takes them to the garage and opens the
door and there sits their police car, lights still flashing.

True story, told by the driver at his first AA meeting.

Just relax a little and laugh at life here.....

YON KIPPUR.....

China is moving forward - Economic growth supports the local church

Chinese believers were dubious when new leaders took the helm at the end of 2012.

But, "China is moving forward, and the Chinese Christians are continuing to reach their people for Jesus Christ," says Erik Burklin of China Partner.

According to recent reports, China's economy is expected to grow by 8.2 percent in 2013. Reuters says business optimism in the four countries known as the BRIC nations (Brazil, Russia, India and China) increased to nearly 40% in 2012.

Burklin says China's growth is a two-sided coin.

"It's a 'both/and' in China right now," he states. "A lot of us [are] obviously concerned about the tremendous economic growth and what that will do to their people. But on the good side...it is wonderful to see how the economy is actually also helping the spread of the Gospel."

Economic growth means more money in the pockets of believers, and in-turn, they're giving more of that income to the Church.

"The good thing of the economy growing as strongly as it is," a Chinese pastor told Burklin, "is that more money is being given to the Lord's work."

Burklin says over 100-million copies of God's Word have been printed within China, and roughly a quarter of them are sent into neighboring nations. It's an indication that China's headed "in the right direction."

"The Chinese church leadership, and also Christians, have a real sense of calling to what Jesus commanded us before He ascended into heaven…to go make disciples of all nations," says Burklin. "That will continue no matter who is in power."

In March, China Partner will conduct another pastoral training conference in Sichuan province. Pastors from surrounding rural areas are invited into the city for a week of intensive training.

"That tells me that they want to continue with what they feel God has called them to do, and that's to equip the saints with the Gospel," says Burklin.

Keep praying for God's will to be done in China. "We know that...hundreds are praying, and that's really one of the reasons why the Gospel is going forth around the world, including China."

WAXING LYRICAL

This poem was written after becoming saddened, almost disillusioned, by the disagreements and arguments I have been witnessing on an internet forum I belong to, between supposedly 'mature' Christians, mainly ministers, who are meant to working together towards unity! How God must cry! I do!

Incidentally, we have had severe floods in New Zealand over the past few days. God's tears? Maybe increased floods aren't a result of global warming after all! But of the divisions in His church!

NOT SURE I WANT TO GO TO HEAVEN ANY MORE!

Not so sure I want to go to heaven any more!
For what I see here, shakes me to the core.
What if heaven was to be the same?
Who would there be to blame!

Not so sure I want to go to heaven any more!
When all I see is raging arguments to the fore.
What if heaven was to be the same?
Who would there be to blame!

Not so sure I want to go to heaven any more!
For we fight on earth and resentments store.
What if heaven was to be the same?
Who would there be to blame!

Not so sure I want to go to heaven any more,
Down here, splits and divisions are folklore.
What if heaven was to be the same?
Who would there be to blame!

Not so sure I want to go to heaven any more!
Disagreement's so rife, just become a bore!
What if heaven was to be the same?
Who would there be to blame!

So maybe I should go to go to heaven now,
To see how God deals with our sacred cow.
Surely heaven can not be the same?
There would only be God to blame!

So how about building His Kingdom on earth?
There's a radical thought, has some worth!
Surely church wouldn't be the same?
When God's kingdom, to earth came!

My friend, we simply have the choice,
To disagree, or speak with one voice.
To defend to the end where we come from,
Or get on with it, and build His Kingdom.

His Kingdom now, has is to be within you see,
Comes as we let Him deal with you and me.
When we go on to seek His heavenly will,
Division and strife, His will, will kill!

The kingdom that disagreement sows,
Is built by treading on other's toes.
But the heavenly kingdom that God does see,
Is founded upon co-operation and unity.

Will you help ease God's frustrations,
By taking the gospel to the nations?
Putting aside, that which does now divide,
The salvation message, others to provide.

Not one has entered through division and strife,
For words spoken in anger do not bring life.
Theological argument hasn't saved a single soul,
Nor a dearly held doctrine made a seeker whole.

But what works every time is a witness of love,
Putting aside the jackal to become the dove.
Yes, as we build His Kingdom on earth you see,
Together, we can all look forward to eternity.

A DAVID MUSING

Here in New Zealand, we have a basketball franchise called the 'NZ Breakers.' They play in the Australian National Basketball League (ABNL). Australia is our nearest neighbour, between 2,100km (Sydney) and 5,300km (Perth) away from our shores.

For the past 2 years the Breakers have won the League, which is amazing, considering the amount of travel they have to do, compared to Australian based teams. They are heading that way again this year!

The interesting thing with the Breakers, now being commented upon more and more in New Zealand, is the lack of controversy within the team. Sure they have had a couple of problems with players with drink and drugs, but these have been handled well, in-house, and the players have responded well and returned to the roster.

Why is this, when most other sports franchises have so many problems?

The reason is, the Breakers are Christian based - from the owners, to many, but not all, the staff and players. They have become an example to the community at large for their methods and behavior.

Can people in the community say that about your church? Or about me? Or about you? Do we stand out, for the right reasons, in the community in which we live?

For our example is the best witness we can give.

Go the Breakers! A threepeat coming up!

(Written by an ex-player from the days when you didn't have to be 6'6"+ tall to succeed! Now shrinking even more! LOL!)

Until next week.....

MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOU BLESS GOD

His servant and yours

wwj.org.nz or by contacting us as follows.

Our role is to bless and encourage those in ministry while promoting co-operation and unity of direction amongst the body of Christ, as emphasised 3 times by Jesus in His longest prayer, immediately prior to His arrest and crucifixion. "… so that they may be one as we are one." (John 17:12, 21, 23-4) Our website is currently being developed to encourage your participation one with another, to share resources, and to enable you to promote events and items of interest to the body as a whole – and have a smile while doing it!
