WHOSE CHURCH IS IT ANYWAY?
THE POST APOSTOLIC CHURCHThe major question now is, "where is the church of the 21st Century heading".
Fifteen years into the new century, it is becoming more apparent that God is 'doing a new thing'. But as we have seen over the past 2000 years, through the Dark Ages, the Reformation and the Holy Spirit revivals of the 20th century, the Holy Spirit will always be to the fore of what transpires.
Regrettably from a human perspective, all past movements of the Holy Spirit have come to an end, primarily because man has codified them and taken over. Like Moses, the world's humblest man and the closest to God before Jesus, when he hit the rock, (which he had done successfully before to bring water), rather than talk to it as God had instructed him to do,(Numbers 20:13) man has always seemingly known better than God. This cost Moses the opportunity to take the Israelites into the Promised Land.
So where do we go from here? What is God doing here and now, and into the future.
THE CHALLENGE OF..... LIVING THE KINGDOM LIFESTYLE
To conclude this series on the history of the church, past, present and likely future from a Holy Spirit anointing perspective, I will finish, over the weeks ahead, by looking at the 'Parables of Jesus' which set out the principles of living a kingdom lifestyle.
The relevant Scriptures can be accessed by clicking on the blue links.
THE VINE AND THE BRANCHES
15 “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. 2 He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. 3 You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. 4 Remain in me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. 5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If anyone does not remain in me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. 7 If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you. 8 This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples. 9 “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. 10 If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father’s commands and remain in his love. 11 I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. 12 My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command. 15 I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit—fruit that will last. Then the Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. 17 This is my command: Love each other. (John 15:1-17)
While not strictly a 'kingdom parable' The Vine and the Branches is an entirely appropriate one to conclude this series, as it sums up the requirements of kingdom living so beautifully.
The first key to kingdom living confirmed here is the importance of being in the vine. Of being in Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, and only Jesus!
Most Christians will say, "David, I am in Jesus!" But are you really? Do you follow a human leader, or do you follow Jesus? Do you follow a particular churches theology, or do you follow Jesus? Do you do good works of your own choosing, or do you follow Jesus? Do you have one foot in the world, or do you follow Jesus? Do you have faith in faith, or do you follow Jesus? And so on.......
My friend, I also have to ask myself these questions, for I am human too. It is so easy to slip into a religious lifestyle, thinking we are following Jesus, but in reality following a human, the ways of an institution, or our own will.
We can do nothing without Jesus. Without growing on the vine, we, the branches, cannot produce godly fruit. Yet, how often do we try and do things, even good things, in our own strength. For there are gOOd things and there are GOd things. One too many 'O's. Ooooooh Dear!
In a similar illustration elsewhere, we, as Gentiles, have been grafted into the, originally Jewish, olive tree. Like the Jews, we too can be pruned out if we do not live holy lives!
Romans 11:17-21
This leads on nicely to the second part of the parable which instructs us to obey God's commands if we wish to remain in the vine of the kingdom.
Of course, as we all know, God's primary command is.....
Matthew 22:35-40
Obedience to God's will is the key to entering into the kingdom. From the Old Testament.....
Deuteronomy 11:1
to the New.....
John 14:23
Indeed, we are to be slaves to righteousness!
Romans 6:15-16
As we conclude our series on the 'Parables of the Kingdom' it seems appropriate to finish with a prayer, as instructed by Jesus.
Matthew 6:9-10
Amen.
So we can continue to say.....
THE TRUE FOLLOWERS OF JESUS ARE ONES WHO ARE OBEDIENT TO THE LEADING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IN THEIR LIVES.

FROM THE WORD
THE WORDS OF JESUSMay we hear what the Lord is saying to us.
Oaths (Matthew 5:33-7)
“And again, you’ve heard that the law said to the people of long ago, ‘You shall not perjure yourself. Instead make sure you keep the oaths you swear to the Lord.’ But I tell you, don’t swear at all. Don’t swear by heaven, because it’s the throne of God. Don’t swear by the earth, because it’s God’s footstool. Don’t swear by Jerusalem, because it’s the city of the great King. Don’t even swear by your head, because you’re not able to make a single hair white or black. Simply say yes or no—more than this comes from the Evil One.
Eye for an Eye (Matthew 5:38-42)
“You’ve heard that the law said, ‘An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.’ But I tell you, don’t resist someone who is evil. If someone slaps you on the right cheek, turn the other cheek to them as well. 40If someone wants to sue you in court and takes your shirt, give them your coat too. If someone demands that you go one mile, go with them two. Give to those who ask you, and don’t turn away those who want to borrow from you.
Love for Your Enemies (Matthew 5:43-8, Luke 6:27-36)
“You’ve heard that the law said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so you may become children of your heavenly Father. For his sun shines on both the good and the bad; and he makes the rain fall on both those who do right and those who do wrong. For if you only love those who love you, what reward do you have? Don’t even the tax-collectors do that? If you only speak kindly to your family, what more are you doing than anyone else? Even the heathen do that! Grow up and become completely trustworthy, just as your heavenly Father is trustworthy.
When Giving to the Needy (Matthew 6:1-4)
“Make sure not to do your good deeds in front of people, just so they can be seen. Otherwise you won’t have any reward from your Father in heaven. When you give to the poor, don’t be like the hypocrites who blow their own trumpets to announce what they’re doing in the synagogues and in the streets so that people will praise them. I tell you the truth: they already have their reward. When you give to the poor, don’t let your left hand know what your right hand’s doing. That way what you give will be in secret, and your Father who sees what happens in secret will reward you.

158. MANY A TRUE WORD.....
A minister, having served the same church for many years with little fruit, decided to leave and take a similar position in another church. Without telling anyone he had made this decision, or writing a letter to the congregation, he waited until Sunday morning to announce his resignation in church.
When he spoke to the congregation he said, "The same Jesus that called me to this church many years ago has now called upon me to leave and serve another church."
The assistant pastor immediately led the congregation in singing, "What a Friend We Have in Jesus."
157. WHICH SERVICE?
One Sunday morning, the pastor noticed little Alex was staring up at the large plaque that hung in the foyer of the church. It was covered with names, and small American flags were mounted on either side of it.
The seven year old had been staring at the plaque for some time, so the pastor walked up, stood beside the boy, and said quietly, "Good morning, Alex."
"Good morning, pastor," replied the young man, still focused on the plaque. "What is this?"
"Well, son, it's a memorial to all the young men and women who died in the service."
Soberly, they stood together, staring at the large plaque.
Little Alex's voice was barely audible when he asked, "Which one, the 8:30 or the 10:40 service?"
156. IT COULD BE WORSE
The woman was pouring out her troubles to her pastor. "Oh, it's awful," she cried. "My husband won't work, and all of our bills are six months overdue."
"Well, look on the bright side," said the minister wryly. "You could be one of your creditors."

254. THE PASTOR AND THE PAINTERThere was a painter who went to paint a pastors house one day. The Pastor showed him everything he wanted done and then left for the day. The painter wondered if he had brought too little paint to complete the job, but he decided to start anyway.
Later in the day he had completed three sides of the house and realized he didn't quite have enough for the fourth side. The painter decided to add water to the paint to make it go further.
When the painter was cleaning his brushes and packing up his truck the Pastor arrived home. He began to circle the house inspecting the work that had been done. Upon coming around the fourth side of the house the Pastor walked calmly to the painter and said "Repaint and thin no more!"
255. ANOTHER ARK
One day, God speaks to Noah. 'Noah', he says, 'I want you to build another Ark.'
'What, like the last one?' asks Noah.
'Yes' replies God, 'Except this time, I want it to have 14 decks.'
'And shall I lead all the animals into it, two by two, like last time? says Noah.
'No, this time I only want you to lead fish into it'. Noah is a little puzzled. 'Just fish?' he asks.
'Yes' says God. 'In fact, just carp.'
'Just carp? Why carp?' Noah quizzes.
'Well,' says God, 'I've always wanted a multi-storey carp Ark'

Islamic State infighting in Syria kills nine: monitor
(Reuters) - At least nine members of Islamic State were killed during infighting in northwestern Syria after some of them tried to flee over the Turkish border, a group monitoring the conflict said on Monday. The fighters clashed on Saturday near the town of al-Bab, 30 km (20 miles) south of the Turkish frontier, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. Five of the escapees and four of those trying to prevent them were killed.
Those trying to escape included one Tunisian and nine European fighters, the Observatory's Rami Abdulrahman said, adding it was not clear exactly which members of that group had been killed.
It is not the first time that Islamic State, which controls tracts of Syria and Iraq, has killed its own members. The Observatory reported in December that the group had killed more than 120 of its fighters in two months, most of them foreigners trying to return home.
The fighting on Saturday erupted when 10 Islamic State combatants broke out of a prison run by the group. They had tried to escape Syria previously and had been jailed, Abdulrahman said, citing sources on the ground.
The five escapees who were not killed were recaptured by the group, the Observatory said.
Thousands of foreigners from across the world have joined the group, an offshoot of al Qaeda, which last year declared a caliphate in territory it controls.

TABERNEAGLES (part one)A summary of one man’s vision for God’s final ‘Tabernacle’ (Apostolic) church, preparing to become the ‘bride’ that Jesus is returning for. The vision is soundly based upon the scriptures (not included here – found in Book Too of ‘Eagles Fly High!’ – ‘The First & Last Word’) illuminating the pattern of the ‘Feasts of The Lord’ in both the Old and New Testaments.
Drawn from the trilogy ‘Eagles Fly High!’, this picture of the final church is presented through prophecy, allegory, poetry, and scripturally based vision.
Definitely a tasty morsel for the hungry in God. For those seeking to discover more about God’s plans for their lives and the church as a whole. Find out all about the ‘Taberneagle Army’ that God is starting to raise up at this critical time in our history.

WAXING LYRICAL
Celebrating the most important event in history – the death and resurrection of Jesus. To some it may seem like a tragedy but the reality is that it was the final victory for Jesus over sin and death, and through Him, for us too. The ultimate example of the saying, ‘No gain without pain!’ For the pain Jesus suffered that day was indescribable. He was beaten to a pulp, unrecognisable, not at all like the sanitised pictures we have
of this gentle looking man sadly looking down on his followers from the cross. He suffered the most agonising and extreme torture and death that it was possible for the Romans to inflict, and they were real experts at it.
This poem attempts, inevitably inadequately, to describe some of the events of that day, a day that had amazingly, been specifically predicted hundreds of years before it came. Indeed it was foreshadowed from the very time that it became necessary, the moment that Adam and Eve were separated from God through sin.
SEVEN TIMES SHED FOR ME
(Matthew 27:46)"Eloi, Eloi, lama sabaacthani" He cried,
My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?
On the stroke of the ninth hour he died
Rejected, cruelly nailed to the God deserted tree.
My Jesus, shedding his blood for me.
To Gethsemane he came, the holy one
(Luke 22:42) Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me;
Yet not my will, but yours be done.
For I’ll ever be obedient, until you set me free.
(Luke 22:44) Being in anguish he prayed more earnestly,
His sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.
The disciples exhausted, slept on peacefully.
Returning from his prayers, by Jesus they were found.
My Jesus, he shed his blood for me.
(Luke 22:47) While he was still speaking a crowd came up,
Included traitor Judas, with whom he did sup.
The chief priests, officers, soldiers and all,
They arrested him, for that was their call.
At the chief priests house they questioned him,
(Matthew 26:67) Spit in his face and struck him with their fists.
The cup of his blood now overflowing its rim,
Grieving eyes closing, seeing through mists.
My Jesus, again he shed his blood for me.
So Jesus, my Saviour, to Pilate was now taken,
His determination to do God’s will, never shaken.
(Matthew 27:11) "Are you the king of the Jews?" Pilate demanded,
(27:11) "Yes it is as you say". My Saviour then remanded.
(Matthew 27:23) "What crime has he committed?" The people, they were consulted.
(27:22-3) "Crucify him! Crucify him!" The rabble cried out loud.
(27:26) Then he released Barabbas to them, Pilate’s feelings most insulted,
(27:26) While he had Jesus flogged, simply to please the crowd.
A third time, my Jesus shed his blood for me.
Seven hundred years before that terrible day,
Through the prophet Isaiah my Jesus did say,
(Isaiah 50:6) "I did not hide my face from mocking and spitting",
To happen to Jesus, God’s son, was not befitting.
(Isaiah 50:6)"I offered my back to those who beat me,
My cheeks to those who pulled out my beard."
With beard gone, Oh God, how could it be,
So intense the pain, more than he had feared.
Four times, my Jesus shed his blood for me.
(Matthew 27:27) Then the Governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium.
No peace for him there, no place to rest, was no sanatorium,
(27:28) They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him,
Preparing my Jesus to die, out on that awful limb.
(Matthew 27:29) They twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head,
(27:29) They put a staff in his right hand, for truly he was the righteous king.
They used the staff to beat the thorns in deeper and deeper instead,
(27:30) Struck him on the head again and again, making worse his suffering.
Five times, my Jesus shed his blood for me.
Under the weight of the cross, voice slurred,
(Psalm 22:15) "My strength is dried up like a potsherd,
And my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth",
Step by step weakening, as he headed south.
(Psalm 22:16) Hung on to the cross, "they pierced my hands and my feet."
(Matthew 27:33-4) At The Place of the Skull. There they offered Jesus wine to drink.
The time was coming near, with his Father again to meet.
His blood poured out, his body near death, it began to shrink.
Six times, my Jesus shed his blood for me.
(Mark 15:33) Darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour,
An ‘awe-full’, fearsome display of God’s fury and power!
(Mark 15:37) With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last,
His worldly pain, now a thing of the past.
(John 9:33) The soldiers came to Jesus and found that he was already dead,
So now there was no need to break his legs.
A lunging spear into his side, spewing forth blood so red,
All poured out, right down to the dregs.
This final time, Jesus shed all his blood for me.
Yes, seven times my Jesus shed his blood for me,
Receiving from the Father, forgiveness of all my sin.
He came to earth; he died, forever to set me free,
He opened the heavenly gates, now to welcome me in.
All because, seven times, Jesus shed his blood for me.
My thanks to Dr Derek Prince for his insights in discovering and teaching this truth.

A DAVID MUSING
There is nothing like a funeral of one close to you to make one think about the inevitability of death. Having just returned from the funeral of my wife Kathy's mum, (not the fabled, dragon mother-in-law - but quite the reverse!), as I write this, I am watching the slow death of New Zealand's chance of winning the World 50 Over Cricket Cup! Oh dear!More seriously though, as surely as we are born, so we will, in due course, die. While we cannot avoid this in the physical, we do have spiritual options. It is most interesting to see the funereal responses of those who are living the promise of Jesus as opposed to those who see death as the end. Almost as different as life and death itself. For spiritually these ones are dead, and it surely shows in their demeanour.
If anything would convince you of the benefits of having faith in the hope of salvation through Jesus, this would.
To which group do you belong?
So until next week.....
MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOU BLESS GOD
His servant and yours
