WHOSE CHURCH IS IT ANYWAY?

THE POST APOSTOLIC CHURCH

Again I acknowledge that much of the material that follows is drawn from the excellent publication by Eddie L. Hyatt, 2000 Years of Charismatic Christianity. For specific references to the writings quoted, please refer to that publication.

We now proceed to the 20th century which, as we all know, was noted for outpourings of the Holy Spirit. Surely all would now be transformed by the Spirit and the bride church produced. Of course, we now know the reality, where there has been greater splits and divisions than ever before. God weeps!

20th CENTURY DEVELOPMENTS

The Day of the Lord

28 “And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions. 29 Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days. (Joel 2:28-9)

THE LATTER RAIN REVIVAL

PERSONAL NOTE: It is always more difficult to talk about 'history' when the events concerned take place in ones own lifetime. Being part of history makes one think you are getting old! LOL! I was born in 1947, but didn't become a true Christian until 40 or so years later. (I was brought up in church, became a 'churchian', then then went into the world for 15 years, before truly finding Jesus through a bankruptcy) However the events of my lifetime have affected me, and I have met others who were involved more intimately with them. The revelations of the Latter Rain Revival have had the greatest affect on my life, and the teachings the Lord has given me have been based on the foundation of the revelation and teachings of that revival. Naturally, the Lord has revealed more since that time, but the principles revealed then eg. The Covenants, The Feasts of the Lord etc., as well as the various spiritual anointings mentioned below, remain foundational today.

THE OUTPOURING AT SHARON BIBLE COLLEGE (Pictured in 1947)

The Latter Rain Revival began amongst the students and staff of Sharon Bible College in North Battleford, Saskatchewan, Canada, in February 1948, rapidly spreading from there, through North America, and around the world.

In the Fall (Northern Hemisphere Autumn) of 1947, teachers from Sharon attended services by William Branham in Vancouver, Canada. Deeply impressed by Branham's demonstration of the word of knowledge and the miraculous healings they observed, they returned home, and together with the students, began fasting, praying and studying the Scripture with heightened expectation. On 12 February 1948 (my wife Kathy's birthdate), they experienced an unusual demonstration of God's presence and power. Ern Hawtin, a faculty member records.....

Some students were under the power of God on the floor, others were kneeling in adoration and worship before the Lord. The anointing deepened until the awe of God was upon everyone. The Lord spoke to one of the brethren. "Go and lay hands upon a certain student and pray for him." While he was in doubt and contemplation one of the sisters who had been under the power of God went to the brother saying the same words, and naming the identical student he was to pray for. He went in obedience and a revelation was given concerning the student's life and future ministry. After this a long prophecy was given with minute details concerning the great thing God was about to do. The pattern for the revival and many details concerning it were given.

The students spent the next day searching the Scriptures for insight and confirmation of what had happened. Hawtin continued about the events of February 14.....

It seemed that all heaven broke loose upon our souls, and heaven came down to greet us. Soon a visible manifestation of gifts was received when candidates were prayed over, and many as a result were healed, as gifts of healing were received.

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF SHARON

The historian, Richard Riss, who studied the Latter Rain Movement extensively, maintains the events at Sharon raised both hope and interest, as there had been a dearth of manifestations in Pentecostalism, having now become formalised and traditionalized, as is the historical denominational pattern over the ages. The curious as well as the spiritually hungry flocked to North Battleford from across particularly Western Canada, the USA and around the world. The Sharon Star carried reports and advertised camp meetings and conventions. Soon, Sharon faculty members were responding to invitations to minister throughout North America.

Quoting John Kilpatrick (from Pensacola) Hyatt continues.....

With emphasis on the laying on of hands for the impartation of spiritual gifts, the recognition of apostles and prophets in the present-day church and the gift of prophecy for directing and commissioning ministerial candidates and proper church government, the revival drew opposition. Although many of these practices had been common among early Pentecostals, they were rejected by most of the Pentecostal denominations.7 As a result of the opposition, a number of ministers left their denominations, including Frodsham. Most of these worked as independent ministers or joined loosely formed fellowships. Although rejected by Pentecostal denominations, these Latter Rain believers continued and, to a degree, influenced and were absorbed into the Charismatic Renewal of the 1960s and 1970s.

PERSONAL TESTIMONY: I have been blessed to meet several of those who were involved in the early Latter Rain Movement when it spread to New Zealand. The feedback I got from them all, was of the wonderful home meetings they had where the power of the Holy Spirit changed peoples lives dramatically. Naturally, they were rejected by the mainline Christian groupings, including the Pentecostals. However, over the years these groups too became formalized, churches and bibles colleges were set up, splits occurred, formal ministry qualifications sought for the now paid leadership. The stream, while now more generally accepted, is lacking in power, spiritual life and revelation. Without exception, the pioneers I met were hugely saddened by the way things had developed, even though they had continued to participate in the church, and reap the financial stability and rewards that denominationalism brings to leadership. These sentiments were not necessarily shared by their wives, for whom the initial financial and family sacrifices had been hard on them and their families!

So we can continue to say.....

THE TRUE FOLLOWERS OF JESUS ARE ONES WHO ARE OBEDIENT TO THE LEADING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IN THEIR LIVES.

FROM THE WORD

THE WORDS OF JESUS continued

The Lord has asked me to compile a publication of the words Jesus spoke, as recorded in the New Testament in chronological order.

Of course, it is not a Bible substitute! I Hope you find it helpful too, in your walk with Jesus.

Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector. (Luke 18:9-14)
Spoken to some self righteous Pharisees.

“Two men went to the Temple to pray. One was a Pharisee, and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood up and prayed to himself, ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people—cheats, criminals, adulterers— or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week, and I pay tithe on my income.’
“But the tax collector stood at a distance. He wouldn’t even look up to heaven. Instead he beat his chest and prayed, ‘God, please be merciful to me. I am a sinner.’
“I tell you, it was this man who went home right in God’s sight and not the other. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, while those who humble themselves will be exalted.”

Divorce (Matthew 19:1-12, Mark 10:1-9)
Jesus is questioned by the Pharisees.

“Haven’t you read that God who created people in the beginning made them male and female?
He said, ‘This is the reason a man will leave his father and mother, and join with his wife, and the two shall become one. Now they’re no longer two, but one. What God has joined together no one should separate.”

Then asked why Moses permitted divorce.

“Because of your hard-hearted attitude Moses permitted you to divorce your wives, but it wasn’t like that in the beginning,” “I tell you, anyone who divorces his wife except on the grounds of sexual immorality and then marries another woman, commits adultery.”

The disciples also thought the teaching was too difficult.

“Not everyone can accept this instruction, only those it’s given to,” “Some are born as eunuchs, some are made eunuchs by men, and some choose to be eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. Those who can accept this should accept it.”

Jesus Blesses the Children (Matthew 19:10-12, Mark 10:3-16, Luke 18:15-17)
When the disciples rebuked them for approaching Jesus.

“Let the children come to me! Don’t stop them, for the kingdom of God belongs to those who are like these children. I tell you the truth, anyone who doesn’t welcome the kingdom of God like a child won’t enter it.”

DAVID'S DOODLINGS

DEATH

185. Death is the one certainty in life.

186. Death is the safest bet of all. Unfortunately however, we won't be round to collect the dividend!

390. Death is not a 'problem' but an 'opportunity' - if we have made the correct preparations beforehand.

391. Why do so many choose to make death the end, when it should be just the beginning?

392. On earth, there is life and death, in heaven, death and life.

393. Many people would like a second chance at life. We all get one actually - after death!

394. Isn't it amazing how our character improves, after we die!

395. If only people would say to us now, the things they say about us at our funeral, the world would be a happier place.

49. A TOOTHLESS WARNING...
"Lead a righteous and spiritual life," admonished a minister to a young rascal he caught causing trouble, "for there will be weeping, wailing and a gnashing of teeth among the wicked who pass on to the next world."

"What if you haven't got any teeth?" said the boy.

"Teeth will be provided!"

48. HOW MANY CHRISTIANS DOES IT TAKE TO CHANGE A LIGHTBULB?
CHARISMATIC: Only one. Hands already in the air.

PENTECOSTALS: Ten. One to change the bulb, and nine to pray against the spirit of darkness.

PRESBYTERIANS: None. Lights will go on and off at predestined times.

ROMAN CATHOLIC: None. Candles only.

BAPTISTS: At least 15. One to change the light bulb, and three committees to approve the change and decide who brings the potato salad.

EPISCOPALIANS: Eight. One to call the electrician, and seven to say how much they liked the old one better.

METHODISTS: Undetermined. Whether your light is bright, dull, or completely out, you are loved - you can be a light bulb, turnip bulb, or tulip bulb. Churchwide lighting service is planned for Sunday, October 14. Bring bulb of your choice and a covered dish.

NAZARENE: Six. One woman to replace the bulb while five men review church lighting policy.

LUTHERANS: None. Lutherans don't believe in change.

AMISH: What's a light bulb?

47. TRUE FAITH!
Three nuns were returning to the convent after a day of volunteer nursing at a local medical care centre. They were travelling along a back road when their car stopped.

After a quick memory search, they remembered they had forgotten to get gas the last time out.

As they were deciding which one would walk for to a gas station, a pickup truck drove up. The driver had plenty of gas and offered some, but he didn't have anything to put it in.

The nuns realized they had the ideal container for the donated gas, they thanked the driver and he went on his way.

A few minutes later an eighteen wheeler came down the road and saw the nuns pouring the contents of a bed pan into their gas tank.

The driver nudged his partner and said, "That's what I call true faith."

FACTS FOR FUN

LAST WEEKS QUESTION: Do penguins live at the North Pole?

ANSWER: Afraid not. All penguins live in the Southern Hemisphere. The Galapagos penguin is the only penguin that sometimes may stray slightly north of the equator. You'll find them all in the Antarctic, but not the Arctic. (Easier to swim down than up?)

THIS WEEK'S QUESTION: Does your skin shrink in water?

Answer Next Week.

SOME FUN FACTS

688. INSULATED IGLOOS
The structure of an igloo is so well insulated that one can sit inside without a coat while the outside temperature is as low as minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit. (No need to light a fire – fortunately!)

689. INJECTIONS INITIATED
The hypodermic needle was invented in 1853. It was initially used for giving injections of morphine as a painkiller. Physicians mistakenly believed that morphine would not be addictive if it by-passed the digestive tract. (The jab! A classic example of ‘no pain, no gain.)

690. THE ORIGIN OF EASTER
In the Christian faith, Easter celebrates the resurrection of Christ and is the most sacred of all holy days. Yet it carries the name of an ancient Saxon festival honouring the goddess Eastre. This arose through the work of second century Christian missionaries eager to convert the Teutonic tribes north of Rome to Christianity. The missionaries realised that interfering too much with the pagan tribes' established customs would make it impossible to convert them. Instead, they quietly transformed existing pagan practices into ceremonies that harmonised with Christian doctrine. Also, Christian converts celebrating Christian rites would be the target among non-Christians for persecution. But if the Christian could celebrate his rites on the same day as a major non-Christian festival, he'd be less noticeable and less offensive to those who didn't share his beliefs. Since the Eastre festival to celebrate spring coincided with the time of the Christian observance of the resurrection of Christ, the Eastre festival was altered to make it a Christian one as converts were slowly won over. The early name, Eastre, was eventually changed to its modern spelling, Easter. A final indication of the antiquity of the Easter holiday is its date, determined by the ancient lunar calendar system, which places it on the first Sunday after the first full moon on or following the Vernal Spring Equinox. (Really, Easter would more accurately be celebrated at the time of the Jewish Passover, for that is when Jesus died and rose again.)

TILL DEATH DO US PART!

97. THE NEW EARS
A man lost both ears in an accident. No plastic surgeon could offer him a solution.

He hears of a very good one in England, and goes to see him. The surgeon examines him, thought a while, and says, "yes, I can help you."

After the operation, bandages off, stitches out, he goes to his hotel. The morning after, in a rage, he calls his surgeon, and yells, "You swine, you gave me a woman's ears!"

"Well, an ear is an ear. It makes no difference whether it is a man's or a woman's." "Are you having problems hearing with your new ears?" asks the Doc.

"No, Doc... I can hear just fine... but I don't understand a thing!"

98. OUCH!
Nina came home rather late. "Oh, Sweetheart," she called out to her husband, "your car's on Main Street." What's it doing on Main Street?" He replied. "Why didn't you bring it home?"

"Couldn't" Nina said. "It's too dark out there to find all the parts."

99. LOGIC
After a particularly rough argument, the wife says to her husband, "I'll tell you what. I'll admit I'm right, if you'll admit you're wrong."

100. CUTE
In the manner of all new mothers, I spent a lot of time inspecting my firstborn, When he was almost a month old. I noticed a curious dimple on his bottom. With each diaper
change and bath I became more concerned. What if the boys in the locker room found it funny and teased him about it, or, even worse, what if some future spouse thought it to be
strange?

One evening I approached my husband, "Look at this," I cried, waving the small bottom about. "Do you think it will embarrass him when he grows up? Do you think it's strange?"

My husband listened patiently to my outburst, then said, "No, I don't think it is strange, dear. I've always thought that it was pretty cute on you!"

101. RELATIVES?
Years ago, George and Laura Bush had enjoyed lunch at the only cafe in Crawford, and were driving back to the ranch in silence. They had had a disagreement just before they got into the pickup truck, and were giving each other the silent treatment. As they passed a
small farm with pigs and a mule in the pasture next to the highway, George couldn't resist. Pointing to the livestock, he jokingly asked, "Relatives of yours?"

Laura, quick witted as ever, responded, "Yes ... in-laws."

Decrease in cultural Christians - Not a Bad Thing, Find Out Why

Greg Jao is a National Field director for InterVarsity Christian Fellowship

USA (MNN) — Can it be good that fewer people are calling themselves Christians?

Some say yes. But you have to read on to understand why.

Writer of LifeWay Research Ed Stetzer recently published an article highlighting trends the Church in America is facing.

The article predicts that in the next few decades, more and more Americans will stop identifying themselves as Christians.

Greg Jao of InterVarsity Christian Fellowship not only agrees with this prediction, but he views it in a positive light.

Jao says that the decline in the use of the word “Christian” doesn’t mean there is a decline in Christianity. “It’s really the decline of people that are nominally Christian: those who are culturally Christian and show up on Easter or Christmas Sunday.”

The Christians that Stetzer defines as “convictional,” and who Jao says have a real faith in Christ, will not decrease.

“I think one of the advantages for Christians in this season is: as fewer and fewer people identify themselves as culturally Christian (‘I show up occasionally’) and would say, ‘I have no religious belief at all,’ it actually gives us an opportunity to present the Gospel in a new way,” Jao says.

Nobody likes to be told what to do twice. For cultural Christians, that may be what it seems like is happening when someone presents the Gospel to them. They don’t want to hear that what they’re doing now might not be a real relationship with God.

Jao explains, “Twenty years ago you might talk to somebody about Jesus, and they would say ‘Oh, sure, sure. I’m already Christian; I go to church occasionally.’ Well, now you have people who say, ‘I don’t go to church at all.’ And because they don’t go to church at all, they’re a little bit more open to hear about Jesus and to consider who He is.”

The fact is, as more people become honest about their faith, the meaning of “Christian” will become narrower and better defined. This honesty creates a new platform from which to share the Gospel.

This trend suggests that churches will become stronger. They’ll be more united, more passionate, and better focused. The apathetic members will be weeded out, the more comfortable they are with admitting they don’t really believe in Christ. The ones left behind are sincere and ready to do the work of the Kingdom. It’s an example of God refining His people to become more effective Christians.

As a result, the younger generations won’t automatically ascribe themselves to Christianity in the way the generations before have.

Jao says this has been evident on college campuses. InterVarsity is finding more and more students who have never been to church, who are unfamiliar with Bible stories, and who don’t really know Jesus. And they don’t pretend that they ever have.

InterVarsity finds that is easy to engage these people in conversation. They’re more willing to look at Scripture with an open mind because they’ve had no previous exposure.

Over the last decade, InterVarsity has watched participation in campus programs grow.

At the same time, some groups of students and faculty are becoming increasingly antagonistic.

“Frequently, actually, at this point, InterVarsity is being challenged on university and college campuses because people find our commitment to the Gospel offensive,” Jao says.

Twenty-eight universities have kicked them off campus. They claim that by requiring their leaders be believers and followers of Christian doctrine, InterVarsity is discriminatory.

Jao doesn’t think resistance is bad. It shows that these people are actually thinking about spiritual things.

He explains, “In some ways, it’s much easier to talk to people who are resistant than to talk to people who are apathetic. And I would much rather have a conversation–an honest conversation where I’m listening thoughtfully and praying as I’m doing so–with someone who is angry with Christianity. Because at some level, people who are angry about Christianity or antagonistic toward spiritual things are actually more sensitive and aware of spiritual realities than people who are just apathetic.”

People actively thinking through faith have a better chance at encountering the true Gospel.

Even if the person has been hurt by the Church, Jao sees it as a great opportunity. He can ask for forgiveness and demonstrate repentance.

If the person thinks Christians are callous and unfeeling, the campus ministries of InterVarsity are perfect for proving them wrong.

Kids who have never encountered the Gospel or a skewed interpretation of it are open to conversation about faith in a way that people who have “heard it all before” may not be.

This means that the generation in college and younger has a unique platform to work from that no other generation has had before. Their peers are willing to listen and converse about our Creator. This is significant because they’re at an age where they’re still forming their worldviews.

“We’re seeing more students coming to faith now than at any time in our history,” Jao says.

If you’re wondering what you can be doing to help campus ministry specifically, contact InterVarsity. They can connect you to a local school you can pray for.

Check out ways that you can partner with InterVarsity to do more hands-on work.

The last thing is something we all should be doing in every area of our life.

Jao says, “In the churches now, what we need–what college students need and high school students need–are models of adults who regularly are having these kind of conversations with co-workers and neighbors, who are confident that the Gospel is good news, certain that Jesus Christ has risen from the dead and therefore really is the Lord of the universe and Hope of the world, who have learned to listen carefully to what their neighbors and co-workers are saying, respond graciously about who Jesus is, but talk unapologetically about why they believe what they believe.”

College students and younger are longing for examples of integrity, compassionate engagement, and gracious certainty in the context of faith.

They want to know how to engage their world for Christ.

WAXING LYRICAL

Feeling dejected that you don't seem to be doing as well as the ministry down the road? Then, this poem is a message of reassurance for you. Yes, God love you too!

YES IT'S TRUE, GOD LOVES YOU!

God loves us all,
The big, the small,
The short and the tall,
At home, at the mall.
Yes it's true, God loves you!

We look at others, see the exterior,
So easy to feel, greatly inferior.
Their ministry is so much bigger than mine!
I'm on the wrong side, of the thin red line!
But it's true, God loves you!

Yesterday, I went past the church down the road,
Everything about it was surely made, me to goad!
From the Mercedes in the carpark, to the automatic door,
Me, in my faithful old jalopy, with four on the floor.
But it's true, God loves you!

With all the trappings of success, God is surely blessing him,
When it comes to my church, expenses, we have to trim!
Oh God, my God, what have I done wrong?
My ministry - it would sell for a song!
But it's true, God loves you!

This man, he's so annointed,
Me - I'm just disappointed!
My Lord, I've given my whole life to you,
Every day, my commitment, I do renew.
But it's true, God loves you!

I love all my people,
More than the steeple.
Many, over the years, have let me down,
But still I bless them, with Your crown.
But it's true, God loves you!

What more can I do for you Lord?
Thought we were of one accord!
But when I see what others have done,
Why have I missed out on all the fun!
But it's true, God loves you!

"I hear you, I hear you, my faithful one,
For you, just for you, I gave my Son,
You are so very precious in my sight,
A shining star, radiating my light."

Yes it's true, God loves you!

"What you perceive, will not always be true,
You don't see things, from my point of view,
For I am looking always, to the heart,
Don't put the horse, before the cart."

Yes it's true, God loves you!

"I do not judge my own by numbers or wealth,
These can be achieved by the human self,
But by how much of yourself you will give to Me,
Commitment and submission - that's what I see."

Yes it's true, God loves you!

"The order in Heaven is so different to earth,
For I am only interested, in spiritual girth!
Not beauty, nor success, nor intelligence, nor size,
I know your heart is for me, that much I realise."

Yes it's true, God loves you!

"So when the glorious day arrives, to finally come, stay with me,
You have built up treasure here, will last throughout eternity,
No, don't get yourself deceived by the glitter of earthly ways,
You are destined to rule and reign with Me - now and always!"

Yes it's true, God loves you!

A DAVID MUSING

As I came to write this at the end of a difficult week, the Lord reminds me of the words of this song....

THE LORD REIGNS

The Lord reigns
The Lord reigns
The Lord reigns
Let the earth rejoice
Let the earth rejoice
Let the earth rejoice
Let the people be glad
That our God reigns

Let us rejoice in Him, no matter what our situation, good or bad, may be today. Yes indeed, LET THE PEOPLE BE GLAD THAT OUR GOD REIGNS!

So until next week.....

MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOU BLESS GOD

His servant and yours

In accordance with the Lord’s direction, materials produced by the ministry are available, free of charge, to genuine enquirers upon request. The ministry is solely funded by donations, as the Lord provides. A list of materials available (plus some fun!) is obtainable and freely downloadable from our website
wwj.org.nz or by contacting us as follows.

Our role is to bless and encourage those in ministry while promoting co-operation and unity of direction amongst the body of Christ, as emphasised 3 times by Jesus in His longest prayer, immediately prior to His arrest and crucifixion. "… so that they may be one as we are one." (John 17:12, 21, 23-4) Our website is currently being developed to encourage your participation one with another, to share resources, and to enable you to promote events and items of interest to the body as a whole – and have a smile while doing it!
