‘THE RAPTURE’ - SATAN’S PLAN OF DECEPTION WITHIN TODAY’S CHURCH (Part 6)
Continuing with The Rapture Theory: It's Surprising Origin by Ernest L. Martin, Ph.D., 1976 commenced last week.....The Influence of John Darby
Many people have thought that John Darby, the founder of the Plymouth Brethren, was the originator of the Rapture doctrine. This is not the case. Darby was a brilliant theologian with outstanding scholarly abilities. Even those who have disagreed with his teachings admit that he, and many associated with him, helped to cause a revival in biblical learning throughout the evangelical world (which even has been perpetuated down to our own present day). All who love biblical research ought to be thankful for what Darby and especially his associates accomplished for biblical scholarship. They particularly helped pave the way for the renewal of modern lexical studies of the languages of the Bible. The doctrine of "dispensationalism" was also a teaching they brought to the attention of the Protestant world.
It had long been thought by many Christians that the Rapture doctrine originated with ,John Darby. It is now known that this is not true. Darby only popularized it. Scofield and others who took over Darby's mantle later helped to make it respectable, Today, many of those in the evangelical sphere of Christianity are so certain of its veracity that it is accepted as the absolute truth of God. The fact is, however, John Darby received the knowledge of the doctrine from someone else. The source was the Margaret Macdonald mentioned above.
The studies of Mr. MacPherson show that her sickness during which she received her visions and revelations occurred sometime between February 1 and April 14, 1830. And by late spring and early summer of 1830, her belief in the two phases of Christ's coming was being mentioned in praise and prayer meetings in several towns of western Scotland. In these meetings some people were speaking in "tongues" and other charismatic occurrences were in evidence. These extraordinary and strange events in western Scotland so attracted John Darby that he made a trip to the area to witness himself what was going on. Though he did not approve of the ecstatic episodes that he witnessed. it is nonetheless significant that Darby, after returning from Scotland, began to teach that Christ's second coming would occur in two phases. MacPherson shows good evidence that Darby had even visited Miss Macdonald in her home. There can hardly he any doubt that the visions of Miss Macdonald are the source of the modern doctrine.
Visions and Dreams
While it is possible that visionary revelations can come from God, it is always prudent to be cautious in such matters. Near the same time that Miss Macdonald was receiving her visions, Joseph Smith in America was experiencing his apparitions which brought Mormon doctrines to the world. John Wilson also had his dreams which were the spark that started the false teaching of British realism. Not long afterwards Ellen G. White received her visions that resulted in many Seventh Day Adventist teachings. And remarkably, all these individuals received revelations of doctrines which were much at variance with one another. Such incidents bring to mind the warning that God gave to Moses.
"If there arise among you a prophet, or a dreamer of dreams, and giveth thee a sign or wonder, and the sign or the wonder come to pass, whereof he spoke unto thee, saying, let us go after other gods, which thou hast not known, and let us serve them; thou shalt not hearken unto the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams: for the Lord proveth you, to know whether ye love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul" (Deuteronomy 13: 1-3).
The teachings of visionaries also recall to mind what the apostle John tells Christians.
"Beloved. believe not every spirit. but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world" (I John 4:1).
And though some point to the prophecy of Daniel that "knowledge shall be increased" (Daniel 12:4) a proof that the revival of doctrinal truths will occur at the end of the age, this is not what Daniel meant. If one reads the prophet carefully. he will find that Daniel is speaking about the knowledge of his prophecies which will be increased. not the revival of general doctrines. In the original text of Daniel the definite article occurs before the word "knowledge." Daniel actually said "THE knowledge will be increased" and the text shows he means "the knowledge of his prophecies." Daniel is in no way speaking about renewing of doctrines at the time of the end. A further admonition is necessary concerning the origins of teachings which might happen near our own time. It is by the apostle Paul.
"Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils" (I Timothy 4:1 ).
These warnings from God's word are given as a reminder that we ought to exercise caution in accepting the truthfulness of visionary revelations especially those that happen near the end of the age and are contradictory to themselves or the Bible.
Conclusion
While there are many suspicious factors conferred with the origin of the Rapture, it could be admitted that the doctrine may reflect a teaching found in the Bible. At least, many feel so. John Darby no doubt thought there was something to it because after his trip to Scotland he changed his mind from believing in a single stage coming and adopted the two stage doctrine which became known as the Rapture. Darby was certainly not a visionary and his
teachings whether right or wrong) are almost always based on scriptural revelation. It was Darby who popularized the Rapture with the scriptural arguments which seem so convincing to some. It could be that the teaching is basically true, but we at the Foundation for Biblical Research in Pasadena have felt incumbent to show our readers the unbiblical source of the doctrine. Too many people have for gotten that it was Miss Macdonald's visions which introduced the doctrine to the world.

FROM THE WORD
THE WORDS OF JESUSMay we hear what the Lord is saying to us.
Ask, Seek, Knock (Matthew 7:7-12)
“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened for you.
Everyone who asks, receives; everyone who seeks, finds; and everyone who knocks has the door opened for them. Would any of you give your son a stone if he asked for bread? Or if he asked for fish, would you give him a snake? So if even you who are evil know to give good things to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good things to those who ask him. “Treat others the way you want them to treat you. This sums up the law and the prophets.
Narrow and Wide Gates (Matthew 7:13-14)
Enter by the narrow entrance. For the entrance is wide, and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and many travel that way. But the entrance is narrow, and the way is difficult that leads to life, and only a few find it.
The Tree and Its Fruit (Matthew 7:15-23, Luke 6:43-5)
“Watch out for false prophets who come wearing sheep’s clothing, but who on the inside are vicious wolves. You can recognize them by their fruits. Do people harvest grapes from thorn bushes, or figs from thistles? So every good tree produces good fruit, while a bad tree produces bad fruit. A good tree can’t produce bad fruit, and a bad tree can’t produce good fruit. Every tree that doesn’t produce good fruit is chopped down and thrown into the fire. So you’ll recognize them by their fruits.
“Not everyone who calls me ‘Lord, Lord’ will enter the kingdom of heaven—only those who do the will of my Father in heaven. Many will say to me at the day of judgment, ‘Lord, Lord, didn’t we prophesy in your name and drive out demons in your name, and perform many miracles in your name?’ Then I will tell them, ‘I never knew you. Leave me, you people who practice wickedness!’

BOOK OF THE WEEK
TRANSITION FROM "THE CHURCH" TO "THE KINGDOM"Living The Kingdom Lifestyle Today
The more I grow in Jesus, the more I study history, and the more revelation the Lord gives me, the more I see differences between where we are as 'the church' and where we should be as integral members of 'the kingdom' of God.
Surely the two are the same? Yes, they are meant to be. But the reality is that they are not. For over the 2000 odd years since Jesus, the church has become an 'institution', with a life of its own, rather than being an 'instrument' to build God's kingdom.
Please don't get me wrong! The church does many good things. It has spread the Good News of Jesus around most of the earth. It is the leading supplier of social services worldwide. It has influenced society and history over the last 2000 years more than any other institution. One third of the world's population is Christian, or nominally so. Considerable milestones have been achieved.
Yet, is the church today truly ushering in the kingdom of God? Do we really mean, or believe it, when we pray.....
10 your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. (Matthew 6:10)
Sadly, the reality is, in much of the church, God's kingdom has become man's kingdom, where the protection and promotion of the individual church, denomination or grouping, has become more important in men's minds than building the kingdom of God. We have moved from a single church kingdom in the 1st century to over 30,000 church kingdoms now!
From the death of the Apostle John round AD100, we saw the gradual erosion of the Apostolic foundations of the church. With the conversion of the Roman Emperor Constantine, the church became a human based institution furthering the ends of the state, or the clergy, or both. The Reformation brought some of the foundational truths back into the church which has been built upon over the centuries since. However churches, whether of traditional, evangelical, charismatic or pentecostal hues have created further division, instead of unity, within the body of Christ.
'Why is this?' and 'What are we to do about it?' are at the heart of what we will look at here.

407. HAROLD
A dad was listening to little Carol say her prayers.
"Dear Harold," Carol prayed, "please bless mom and daddy and..."
At this point, the dad interrupted and said, "Wait a minute, sweetie. Why are you calling God 'Harold'?"
Carol looked up and said, "That's what they call Him in church. You know -- the prayer where we all say, 'Our Father who art in Heaven, Harold be Thy name.' "
406. MADE IT
A pastor who enjoyed bragging on his son was talking one day with a friend, who happened to be a rabbi.
The pastor said "My son was a star on his high school baseball team."
"That's nice," said the rabbi, "and after that?"
"Well," said the pastor, "after that he went to Harvard and graduated summa cum laude."
"Not bad,"said the rabbi thoughtfully, "and after that?"
"So then he went to law school at Georgetown and was editor of the law review."
"Hmmm. And after that?" asked the rabbi.
"Well, as soon as he graduated from law school, the biggest law firm in New York immediately made him a full partner!"
"Not bad. Is that all?" the rabbi quietly asked.
The pastor, clearly irritated, said, "Is that ALL! What do you expect -- that my son should become God or something?"
The rabbi shrugged and said, "Well -- one of OUR boys made it."

In Victorian times, publications never dared show a bed in any of their advertisements. When illustrations of the bedroom were required, the bed itself was hidden by curtains. (Now even the bed covers are left off. Is that progress?)

Diaspora Missions: People on the Move in the Borderless World
As of the end of 2015, 65.3 million people were displaced.Sadiri Joy Tira
Over the past couple of years, the refugee crisis has hit epic levels, and although for now our news feeds may not be filled with current information on this humanitarian crisis, according to the UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, “1 in every 113 people globally is now either an asylum-seeker, internally displaced, or a refugee—a level of risk for which UNHCR knows no precedent.†This is unacceptable.
I am excited to run a series of five posts from scholars and practitioners in diaspora missiology. I believe we have much to learn from them.
Sam George
In his personal reflections, Sam sees the global meeting or convergence of people from East to West, and South to North. When we see the world this way, we realise that it makes sense that doing missions in our generation is no longer lineal (from here to there), but polycentric; that is, we do God's mission “from everywhere to everywhere.â€
Cody Lorance
The lack of interpersonal skills, respect of others, tolerance, humility, patience, and the fruit of the Holy Spirit can easily turn off unbelievers in general, but migrants in particular. Let us not complicate evangelism! Without being Spirit-controlled, the “evangelist†or “witness†loses credibility even before he or she opens his or her mouth. It is important to be polite, cordial, friendly, and humorous when we “[enter] another's world.â€
Lisa Espineli Chinn
Lisa has worked over four decades as missionary/evangelist in university and college campuses in the USA and the Philippines. As mentor and coach for younger leaders associated with InterVarsity and International Student Ministries, she mobilizes hundreds of campus workers and local congregations to practice hospitality. The ministry of hospitality is a proven evangelistic and discipleship strategy for millions of international students all over the globe, particularly for those studying in northern hemisphere.
Stanley John
Sociologists have been observing the rapid church growth in the West, including North America. Some have noticed that diaspora communities are agents of social transformation, including the “revitalization†of Christianity. Professor John, of the Alliance Theological Seminary (New York), makes the appeal that diaspora congregations “be treated as equal partners in missions.â€
The impact of diasporas and accelerated global migration is pervasive and mind-boggling. However, when viewing the world through the lenses of mission, we can truly “declare his glory among the nations, his marvellous deeds among all peoples for great is the Lord and most worthy of praise†(Psalm 96:3-4).
