WHOSE CHURCH IS IT ANYWAY?

THE POST APOSTOLIC CHURCH
Again I acknowledge that much of the material that follows is drawn from the excellent publication by Eddie L. Hyatt, 2000 Years of Charismatic Christianity. For specific references to the writings quoted, please refer to that publication.

We now move on to the post-Reformation eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

1700-1900

THE SECOND GREAT AWAKENING (1800-1840)

Quoting directly from Hyatt.....

As the nineteenth century dawned, America was again morally bankrupt. A generation had come of age that knew little of the revival that had swept the nation sixty years earlier. Eight years of war had drained the nation's vitality, leaving a dark cloud of spiritual indifference and moral degradation. Negative influences from the French Revolution were penetrating American society, and deism was at its peak of popularity. All of this resulted in a rise in profanity, drunkenness, gambling and lewdness.

The General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church circulated a pastoral letter declaring they were "filled with concern and awful dread" at conditions they beheld on every hand. They expressed the solemn conviction "that the eternal God has a controversy with this nation." This concern prompted fervent prayer that precipitated a national spiritual awakening beginning on the East Coast around 1800 and spreading to the western frontier.

REVIVAL ON THE EAST COAST

East coast Colleges were hotbeds of hotbeds of rebellion, of 'infidels' as they were then known, yet became centres of revival.

At Yale, President Timothy Dwight, son-in-law of Jonathan Edwards, preached a series of messages on infidelity resulting in 1/3 of the student body declaring faith in Christ. Revival fires engulfed Dartmouth, Williams and other colleges. From there, it swept into the towns and cities.

REVIVAL IN KENTUCKY

Far more influential were the events in Kentucky, over the Allegheny mountains. James McGready, a Presbyterian pastor of three small congregations on the Gasper, Red
and Muddy Rivers in Logan County, Kentucky, experienced revival. In 1796, he led his congregation in signing a covenant to pray every Saturday and Sunday morning, devoting the third Saturday of each month to prayer and fasting. Their focus was revival.

Four years passed with no obvious change, when suddenly a revival broke out that would eventually change the course of the American nation.

It started in a weekend meeting at McGready's Red River Church. The presence of the Spirit was so intense during the first two days of the meeting that the congregation was reduced to tears, several times. On the final day, after the formal service had ended and other ministers had left, two Methodist ministers, John and William McGhee, lingered behind with the congregation. The Holy Spirit seemed to permeate the very atmosphere, and weeping could be heard throughout the house. Finally, John McGhee rose to his feet to give one final exhortation.....

I exhorted them to let the Lord Omnipotent reign in their hearts and submit to Him and their souls should live. Many broke silence. The woman in the east end of the house shouted tremendously. I left the pulpit to go to her. Several spoke to me, "You know these people Presbyterian are much for order, they will not bear the confusion, go back and be quiet." I turned to go back and was near falling, the power of God was strong upon me. I turned again, and losing sight of fear of man, I went through the house shouting and exhorting with all possible ecstasy and energy and the floor was soon covered by the slain.

With news spreading quickly, McGready announced another meeting for the end of July at the Gasper River church. Response was phenomenal, some travelling 100 miles to be there! Many came with tents, prepared to remain for the 4 days. The first camp meeting!

The first service continued throughout the night. Sleep and physical comforts seemed to be forgotten as things eternal gripped the hearts and minds of the people. On the Sunday evening, as John McGhee preached, the cries of the penitent almost drowned his voice. People fell prostrate on the ground, where cries of distress over sin soon gave way to shouts of joy arising out of assurance of salvation.

BARTON STONE AND THE CANE RIDGE REVIVAL

Barton W. Stone, pastor of Presbyterian churches at Concord and Cane Ridge in Bourbon County, Kentucky, attended the Red River meeting. Convinced it was a genuine work of God, he applied McGready's principles, and revival fires began to burn in his two congregations.

A Camp Meeting at Cane ridge, beginning on August 6, 1801, and attended by between 10 and 25,000 people, saw many manifestations of the Holy Spirit. James Findlay, not a professing Christian, attended and reported......

The noise was like the roar of Niagara. The vast sea of human beings seemed to be agitated as if by a storm. Some of the people were singing, others praying, some crying for mercy in the most piteous accents, while others shouted vociferously. A strange supernatural power seemed to pervade the entire mass of mind there collected... At one time I saw at least 500, swept down in a moment as if a battery of a 1000 guns had been opened upon them, and then immediately followed shrieks and shouts that rent the very heavens. I fled for the woods...and wished I had stayed at home.

Because of the number and nature of manifestations, critics abounded, with Barton Stone commenting.....

"So low had religion sunk, and such carelessness had universally prevailed that I have thought that nothing common could have arrested and held the attention of the people."

CONCLUSION

Presbyterians, Baptists and Methodists now often joined together in great general camp meetings with thousands attending. The revival grew, gaining momentum like a great tidal wave. Peter Cartwright, a Methodist preacher, stated.....

"The work went on and spread almost in every direction gathering additional force till our country seemed all coming to God."

Between 1800-1803, in Kentucky alone, Baptist churches added 10,000 new members, and the Methodists, 40,000. Every denomination experienced the fruit of the revival, assuring the religious character of the United States for generations to come.

So we can continue to say.....

THE TRUE FOLLOWERS OF JESUS ARE ONES WHO ARE OBEDIENT TO THE LEADING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IN THEIR LIVES.

FROM THE WORD

THE WORDS OF JESUS continued

The Lord has asked me to compile a publication of the words Jesus spoke, as recorded in the New Testament in chronological order. I have got about halfway, and have found it very enlightening and encouraging in my relationship with Him. The final version will have changes of layout and version used, but this is a foretaste of things to come. Of course, it is not a Bible substitute! I Hope you find it helpful too, in your walk with Jesus.

The Adulterous Woman (John 8:1-11)
Brought by the teachers and Pharisees to Jesus in the Temple for judgment.

“If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.” “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?”
“Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.”

Jesus’ Testimony Questioned (John 8:12-30)
In the Temple Treasury, the Pharisees question the validity of Jesus’ origin.

“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
“Even if I testify on my own behalf, my testimony is valid, for I know where I came from and where I am going. But you have no idea where I come from or where I am going. 15 You judge by human standards; I pass judgment on no one. 16 But if I do judge, my decisions are right, because I am not alone. I stand with the Father, who sent me. 17 In your own Law it is written that the testimony of two men is valid. 18 I am one who testifies for myself; my other witness is the Father, who sent me.”
“You do not know me or my Father,” Jesus replied. “If you knew me, you would know my Father also.” 20 He spoke these words while teaching in the temple area near the place where the offerings were put. Yet no one seized him, because his time had not yet come.
“I am going away, and you will look for me, and you will die in your sin. Where I go, you cannot come.”
‘Where I go, you cannot come’?”
“You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. 24 I told you that you would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am the one I claim to be, you will indeed die in your sins.”
“Just what I have been claiming all along,” Jesus replied. 26 “I have much to say in judgment of you. But he who sent me is reliable, and what I have heard from him I tell the world.”
“When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am the one I claim to be and that I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me. 29 The one who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, for I always do what pleases him.”

Children of Abraham (John 8:31-59)
The debate continued with the Pharisees claim to be Abraham’s children.

“If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
“I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. 35 Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. 37 I know you are Abraham’s descendants. Yet you are ready to kill me, because you have no room for my word. 38 I am telling you what I have seen in the Father’s presence, and you do what you have heard from your father.”
“If you were Abraham’s children,” said Jesus, “then you would do the things Abraham did. 40 As it is, you are determined to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham did not do such things. 41 You are doing the things your own father does.”
“If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and now am here. I have not come on my own; but he sent me. 43 Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say. 44 You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desire. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies. 45 Yet because I tell the truth, you do not believe me! 46 Can any of you prove me guilty of sin? If I am telling the truth, why don’t you believe me? 47 He who belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God.”
49 “I am not possessed by a demon,” said Jesus, “but I honor my Father and you dishonor me. 50 I am not seeking glory for myself; but there is one who seeks it, and he is the judge. 51 I tell you the truth, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death.”
“If I glorify myself, my glory means nothing. My Father, whom you claim as your God, is the one who glorifies me. 55 Though you do not know him, I know him. If I said I did not, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and keep his word. 56 Your father Abraham rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it and was glad.”
58 “I tell you the truth,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I am!

LAUGHING AT OURSELVES

***Blessed are those who can laugh at themselves for they shall never cease to be amused***

*** Those who can't laugh at themselves leave the job to others. ***

851. SEEKING WISE COUNSEL

The presiding judge in a case involving a man charged with tax evasion was known for his dry sense of humor. As the defendant stood before him alone, the judge asked if he had counsel. Looking toward the ceiling, the man replied, "Jesus Christ is my counselor and defender."

The wise Judge nodded slowly while carefully framing his next question, which was, "Sir, do you have LOCAL counsel?"

850. ELECTING TO RECEIVE
It was Super Bowl Sunday, and in our Presbyterian church the time for the collection of tithes and offerings was approaching. The minister, a true sports enthusiast, reached into his pocket, took out a quarter, flipped it into the air, glanced at it as it landed, then in typical referee fashion joyfully announced: "The ushers have elected to receive!"

849. THE TOAST
Murphy drops some buttered toast on the kitchen floor. It lands butter-side-up. He looks at what he has done in astonishment, for he knows it's a law of nature that buttered toast always falls butter-down.

He rushes round to the presbytery to fetch the priest. He tells the priest that he thinks a miracle has happened round at his flat. He won't say what it is but wants Fr. Flannagan to see it with his own eyes.

He brings the priest into the kitchen and asks him what he sees on the floor.

"Well," says the priest, "it's pretty obvious what we have here. Someone dropped some buttered toast, and then for some reason flipped it over so that the butter was on top."

"No, Father, I dropped it and it landed like that."

"Well," Fr. Flannagan says, "it's certainly a natural law of the universe that dropped toast never falls butter side up. But it's not for me to say it's a miracle. I'll report the matter to the bishop, and have him send people round, to interview you, take photos, etc."

An investigation of some rigor is conducted, not only by priests of the archdiocese, but also by scientists sent from the Archbishop in Dublin.

The final ruling is negative, however. It read: "It was certainly an extraordinary event that occurred in Murphy's room, quite outside the normal run of the phenomena. Yet we have to be very cautious before ruling any happening miraculous, ruling out all possible natural explanations. In this case we have declared no miracle. For it more likely resulted from Murphy's having buttered the toast on the wrong side."

LIFE'S A LAUGH

12. NOT SO 'GOOD FRIDAY'
Here's a true story that happened to a friend's father: He was standing in line at the bank when there was a commotion at the counter. A woman was distressed, exclaiming, "Where will I put my money?! I have all my money and my mortgage here!! What will happen to my mortgage?!"

It turned out that she had misunderstood a small sign on the counter. The sign read, WE WILL BE CLOSED FOR GOOD FRIDAY. I guess Easter was not uppermost in her thoughts, because she thought that the bank was going to close "for good" that coming Friday.

13. WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
About a year ago my sister, who lives in Virginia, was talking with her four year old son, Brent. He was asking her why all their relatives from Wisconsin talk funny and
sound like their noses are plugged up.

"They think we have an accent," she replied.

"But they have an accent, right?" Brent asked. "They talk funny."

"Everybody talks in different ways" she tried to explain. "To them, we sound like we talk very slow and all our words are d-r-a-w-n out."

His eyes got big, and he whispered seriously, "Oh, no. You mean they hear funny too?"

14. CHARACTERISED?
My kids love going to the Web, and they keep track of their passwords by writing them on Post-it notes. I noticed their Disney password was "MickeyMinnieGoofyPluto," and so I asked why it was so long.

"Because," my son explained, "they say it has to have at least four characters."

15. REVENGE!
Early one evening a gentleman scuttled out to his garage and pulled the lawn furniture out onto the driveway. Shortly after followed the lawnmower, a few gardening tools and a bicycle.

A curious neighbour wandered over and asked if he was going to have a garage sale.

"No," replied the gentleman, "my son just bought his first car and right now he's getting ready for a big date."

"So what's with all the stuff?" asked the neighbour.

"Well, after years of moving tricycles, toys and sports equipment out of the way every time I came home from work I wanted to make sure the driveway was ready for him."

16. SOME THINGS NEVER CHANGE
The passengers were leaving the plane after landing, and one smiling, satisfied passenger paused to congratulate the flight attendant.

"Stewardess," he said happily, "I want to compliment you and the crew and especially the captain for getting here right on time. It's not often that an airline gets to where it's going exactly when they claim it will. I'm going to call your home office and let them know how pleased I am."

"Why, thank you, sir," the flight attendant answered, "but I think you should know--this is yesterday's flight."

FBI Raids 'Machine Gun' Preacher's Home

CBN News

Sam Childers, the man known as the "Machine Gun Preacher," is the subject of a possible federal investigation as FBI agents recently raided his home and ministry headquarters.

Childers is best known for his charitable work rescuing kidnapped children in Africa.

Last year, he received the Mother Teresa Humanitarian Award for freeing African kids from the clutches of the infamous Lord's Resistance Army, a militant cult in Uganda, Central African Republic, and South Sudan.

But last week, he was on the receiving end of the law while he was busy helping children on another continent. FBI agents raided his home and ministry in Somerset County, Pa.,

"I was told they came in guns drawn and told everyone to put their hands in the air, patted everyone down," Childers told CBN News.

"They made them all leave the building, put my daughter into a closed room and they started their search," he continued. "We suspect that they were searching for things leading, showing that I'm smuggling arms to Africa and selling them, which is totally crazy."

Childers said a shipping container full of clothing for the orphans was ruined.

He believes the federal action came at the urging of his former son-in-law who's accused of stealing thousands of dollars from the ministry.

Childers said he thinks it may be part of a plea agreement in the case. The FBI wouldn't comment.

Still, Childers said he believes the agents overreacted.

"Instead of going crazy and spending thousands and thousands of tax dollars, why didn't they just go and talk to the people who packed the containers?" he said.

They're members of his church, and many are over 50 years old who have been doing this for the past two years.

The Pennsylvania pastor's life story was told in the movie "Machine Gun Preacher" starring actor Gerard Butler.

The movie detailed his leaving a life of crime and drugs for following Christ and starting rescue and orphanage ministry in South Sudan.

He's currently there helping children trapped in South Sudan's civil war. He has taken in at least 18 orphans, including an 11-year-old boy he found roaming the streets of Kampala, Uganda.

"His parents were killed right before his eyes," Childers said. "(He) was sleeping on the streets of Kampala for two weeks eating garbage, so we have rescued him and he's at one of my homes in Kampala."

Childers said he expects to hear more from the FBI once he returns home, but knows his battle really isn't with them.

"It's definitely a spiritual attack. It doesn't matter what they do to me, God is in control and he still has victory," he said.

A DAVID MUSING

Last week I wrote of the arrival of my wife, home from visiting our family in Britain.

This week I expect 2 'arrivals'!

Firstly, the clothing from Italy for our new shop Chez LABELle, which is due in the next few days, just in time to be processed, pressed, priced and placed in the shop for our grand opening on Friday 28 February. Very exciting!

Secondly, there is the return of my computer from David, my computer guru, who has been remedying the problems caused by my 'computer invasion', plus taking the opportunity to upgrade virtually all the machine at the same time. In a way, even more exciting, for I miss it! Thank you David.

Yes, reality is, computers are part of the family now! What will I get back? My old favourite? An improved model? LOL!

I know (if you have a weird mind like me) you will be comparing the arrival of Kathy to that of the computer! But she is my 'young' favourite and the 'perfect' model!!!

Sadly, it is true that much of our life is now lived vicariously through computers and the children they spawn, such as Google, Facebook and Twitter. Relationships conducted through a sterile machine, without the colour, fragrance and intimacy that personal contact provides.

Our relationship with God can so easily go the same way. Today we can easily accumulate huge amounts of knowledge about God through the multitude of resources available to us, yet miss out on the glorious intimacy of a personal relationship with our Saviour and Lord. But Jesus wants all of us, head, heart, and actions, not just knowledge, stored in our computer memory.

The question is, "How much are we prepared to give Him?"

So until next week.....

MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOU BLESS GOD

His servant and yours

David Tait
