MUSINGS ON THE KINGDOM - PAST, FUTURE AND PRESENT
KINGDOM PASTOne of the basic differences between the Old and New Testaments is the perceived change from 'physicality' to 'spirituality'.
For example, the physical presence of God was found in the Tabernacle and the Temple, in the Old, while our bodies have become the spiritual temple of the Holy Spirit, in the New.
20 Once, having been asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, Jesus replied, “The kingdom of God does not come with your careful observation, 21 nor will people say, ‘Here it is,’ or ‘There it is,’ because the kingdom of God is within you.†(Luke 17:20-21)
In the weeks ahead we will look at the correctness of our understanding.
However, for today, as we discuss the 'kingdom past', we need to place ourselves in the position of the Jews at the time of Jesus.
Their history was of the glory of the Jewish nation under David and then Solomon, at which time Israel became an important regional power in the Middle East.
God inhabited the Tabernacles of Moses and David, His presence being found between the cherubin on the Ark in the Holy of Holies. (To find out more, check out A REVELATION OF....... THE AMAZING TABERNACLE OF MOSES)
Of course, through disobedience, this 'kingdom' split into two, disintegrated and finally disappeared as the people were conquered. The ten tribes of Israel disappeared forever while the remaining 2 tribes of Judah, plus many of the priests, were taken into captivity in Babylon. Eventually a small group returned to the Jerusalem area, led by Nehemiah and Hezekiah, to rebuild the city and the temple.
However the city remained under foreign control of various conquering empires until, at the time of Jesus, it was the Roman's turn to rule the Palestine area. The people, of course, longed for the glory days of their former 'kingdom'. Many thought Jesus would be the 'saviour' to restore their land to them.
9 Those who went ahead and those who followed shouted, “Hosanna!†“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!†10 “Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David!†"Hosanna in the highest!†(Mark 11:9-10)
The Romans, quite naturally, pursued Him, particularly during the last year of His ministry, as a perceived enemy of the state and threat to their rule. They were supported by most Jewish religious leaders who desired the status quo, as religious leaders generally do. When, after Palm Sunday, Jesus did not lead an insurrection, the people too, turned against Him, and demanded that He be put to death.
22 “What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called Christ?†Pilate asked. They all answered, “Crucify him!†(Matthew 27:22)
For the 'kingdom past', in the eyes of the Jews, both then and now, was a physical, territorial kingdom of Jewish people, with Jerusalem as its capital.
There are many similarities, as I am sure you will realise, with what is perceived to be the kingdom of the future, when Jesus returns to rule and reign upon the earth.
The 'kingdom past' then, is very much a physical entity, one based on ethnicity, located in the Middle East, comprising all the lands God promised to the Patriarchs, including those which were not fully conquered, even at the height of Solomon's reign during Israel's glory days.
Then Moses climbed Mount Nebo from the plains of Moab to the top of Pisgah, across from Jericho. There the LORD showed him the whole land—from Gilead to Dan, 2 all of Naphtali, the territory of Ephraim and Manasseh, all the land of Judah as far as the western sea, 3 the Negev and the whole region from the Valley of Jericho, the City of Palms, as far as Zoar. 4 Then the LORD said to him, “This is the land I promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob when I said, ‘I will give it to your descendants.’ I have let you see it with your eyes, but you will not cross over into it.†(Deuteronomy 34:1-4)
Jesus both changed and extended the concept of 'kingdom' in a way the people did not understand.

FROM THE WORD
The Coming of the Kingdom of God"Once, having been asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, Jesus replied, “The kingdom of God does not come with your careful observation, nor will people say, ‘Here it is,’ or ‘There it is,’ because the kingdom of God is within you.†Then he said to his disciples, “The time is coming when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man, but you will not see it. Men will tell you, ‘There he is!’ or ‘Here he is!’ Do not go running off after them. For the Son of Man in his day will be like the lightning, which flashes and lights up the sky from one end to the other. But first he must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation. “Just as it was in the days of Noah, so also will it be in the days of the Son of Man. People were eating, drinking, marrying and being given in marriage up to the day Noah entered the ark. Then the flood came and destroyed them all. “It was the same in the days of Lot. People were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building. But the day Lot left Sodom, fire and sulfur rained down from heaven and destroyed them all. “It will be just like this on the day the Son of Man is revealed. On that day no one who is on the roof of his house, with his goods inside, should go down to get them. Likewise, no one in the field should go back for anything. Remember Lot’s wife! Whoever tries to keep his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life will preserve it. I tell you, on that night two people will be in one bed; one will be taken and the other left. Two women will be grinding grain together; one will be taken and the other left.†“Where, Lord?†they asked. He replied, “Where there is a dead body, there the vultures will gather.â€" (Luke 17:20-37)
The Triumphal Entry
"As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples, saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and just as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ tell him, ‘The Lord needs it and will send it back here shortly.’†They went and found a colt outside in the street, tied at a doorway. As they untied it, some people standing there asked, “What are you doing, untying that colt?†They answered as Jesus had told them to, and the people let them go. When they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks over it, he sat on it. Many people spread their cloaks on the road, while others spread branches they had cut in the fields. Those who went ahead and those who followed shouted,
“Hosanna!†“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!†“Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David!†“Hosanna in the highest!†Jesus entered Jerusalem and went to the temple. He looked around at everything, but since it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the Twelve." (Mark 11:1-11)
Jesus Before Pilate
"Meanwhile Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?†“Yes, it is as you say,†Jesus replied. When he was accused by the chief priests and the elders, he gave no answer. Then Pilate asked him, “Don’t you hear the testimony they are bringing against you?†But Jesus made no reply, not even to a single charge—to the great amazement of the governor. Now it was the governor’s custom at the Feast to release a prisoner chosen by the crowd. At that time they had a notorious prisoner, called Barabbas. So when the crowd had gathered, Pilate asked them, “Which one do you want me to release to you: Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?†For he knew it was out of envy that they had handed Jesus over to him. While Pilate was sitting on the judge’s seat, his wife sent him this message: “Don’t have anything to do with that innocent man, for I have suffered a great deal today in a dream because of him.†But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus executed. “Which of the two do you want me to release to you?†asked the governor.
“Barabbas,†they answered. “What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called Christ?†Pilate asked. They all answered, “Crucify him!†“Why? What crime has he committed?†asked Pilate. But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify him!†When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that instead an uproar was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd. “I am innocent of this man’s blood,†he said. “It is your responsibility!†All the people answered, “Let his blood be on us and on our children!†Then he released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified." (Matthew 27:11-26)

DAVID'S DOODLINGS
A MATTER OF TIME77. What is the one thing that cannot be stored for future use? Time.
78. There is nothing on earth as perishable as time.
79. The difficult takes time, the impossible a little longer.
80. Time is a fine servant but a harsh master.
81. Love and time walk hand in hand.
254. There is never enough time to learn all I should know, but plenty of time to make all the mistakes I should know not to make!
321. Time is like the air we breathe. We don't appreciate it until it runs out!
322. The 'old days' were golden - upon reflection that is!
323. Time makes the heart grow fonder but the memory less reliable.
324. 'What could have been' is the product of time past, 'what can be,' the promise of time to come.
325. It's no use crying over spilt milk - or lost time.
326. Time is an irresistible force - until it meets that irresistible object called 'death.'
327. Time cannot be beaten - so why not try working with it, rather than against it.
328. Time and true love are the two luxuries that money can't buy.
329. In the battle of life, time wins and we lose. We rest more contentedly once we accept this inevitability.
330. By the time we appreciate that time is truly precious, most of it has already passed us by.
331. Time is a master of extremes; for 'African Time' is the curse of Africa, 'busyness,' that of the West.
332. Time is a great healer, but one not appreciated until it's soothing balm is experienced.

CRANWELL'S CARTOON
And God said, “Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds: livestock, creatures that move along the ground, and wild animals, each according to its kind.†And it was so. 25 God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.
26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.â€
27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. (Genesis 1:24-27)

LAUGHING AT OURSELVES
***Blessed are those who can laugh at themselves for they shall never cease to be amused****** "Those who can't laugh at themselves leave the job to others." ***
104. FEEE ADMISSION
A little child in church for the first time watched as the ushers passed the offering plates.
When they neared the pew where he sat, the youngster piped up so that everyone could hear; "Don't pay for me Daddy, I'm under five."
103. JONAH NAND THE WHALE
A little girl was talking to her teacher about whales. The teacher said it was
physically impossible for a whale to swallow a human because even though they were
very large mammals, their throat was very small. The little girl stated that Jonah
was swallowed by a whale.
The teacher reiterated that a whale could not swallow a human; it was impossible.
The little girl said, "When I get to heaven I will ask Jonah."
The teacher asked, "What if Jonah went to hell?"
The little girl replied, "Then you ask him."
102. I BAPTISE YOU?!
The young son of a Baptist minister was in church one morning when he saw for the first time baptism by immersion. He was greatly interested in it, and the next morning proceeded to baptize... you guessed it... his three cats in the bathtub.
The youngest kitten bore it very well, and so did the younger cat, but the old family tom cat rebelled.
The old feline struggled with the boy, clawed and tore his skin, and finally got away. With considerable effort the boy caught the old tom again and proceeded with the "ceremony."
But the cat acted worse than ever, clawing and spitting, and scratching the boy's face.
Finally, after barely getting the cat splattered with water, he dropped him on the floor in disgust and said:
"Fine, be a Methodist if you want to!"

LAST WEEKS QUESTION: When did ‘Superman’ first appear in print?ANSWER: : Superman dates back to June 1938, when he appeared in
Action Comics No. 1. Batman arrived on the scene one year later in
Detective Comics No. 27, appearing May 1939. (But they haven’t died

short cartoon?
Answer Next Week.
322. DANGEROUS KISSES
In Japan, where kissing was once considered ‘unclean, immodest, indecorous, ungraceful, and likely to spread disease' — per Tokyo's Prefect of Police — approximately 800,000 feet of kissing scenes were deleted from American movies released there in 1926. (Have now caught the bad habit!)
323. MANY BREAKFASTS
The largest known egg ever laid by a creature was that of the extinct Aepyornis of Madagascar. The egg was 9.5 inches long. It had a volume of 2.35 gallons, or over 10.5 litres. (Did high cholesterol cause its extinction?)
324. INSIDE OUT?
A day on the planet Mercury is twice as long as its year. Mercury rotates very slowly but revolves around the Sun in slightly less than 88 days. (Would age be measured in days there?)

LIFE'S A LAUGH
32. VIOLIN PRACTICELittle Harold was practising the violin in the living room while his father was trying to read in the den.
The family dog was lying in the den, and as the screeching sounds of little Harold's violin reached his ears, he began to howl loudly.
The father listened to the dog and the violin as long as he could. Then he jumped up, slammed his paper to the floor and yelled above the noise, "For pity's sake, can't you play something the dog doesn't know?"
33. BE YOURSELF
President Calvin Coolidge once invited friends from his hometown to dine at the White House. Worried about their table manners, the guests decided to do everything that Coolidge did. This strategy succeeded, until coffee was served. The president poured his coffee into the saucer. The guests did the same. Coolidge added sugar and cream. His guests did, too. Then Coolidge bent over and put his saucer on the floor for the cat.
34. TEACHER'S PET
On a special Teachers' Day, a kindergarten teacher was receiving gifts from her pupils. The florist's son handed her a gift. She shook it, held it overhead, and said, "I bet I know what it is, some flowers."
"That's right" the boy said, "but how did you know?" "Oh, just a wild guess," she said.
The next pupil was the candy store owner's daughter. The teacher held her gift overhead, shook it and said, "I bet I can guess what it is, a box of candy." "That's right, but how did you know?" asked the girl. "Oh, just a wild guess," the teacher said.
The next gift was from the son of the liquor store owner. The teacher held it overhead, but it was leaking. She touched a drop of the leakage with her finger and touched it to her tongue. "Is it wine?" she asked. "No" the boy replied, obviously delighted that he was the first student to at least temporarily defy the teacher's apparent insight.
The teacher repeated the process, touching another drop of the leakage to her tongue. "Is it champagne?" she asked. "No," the clearly delighted boy answered. Once again the teacher tasted the leakage and finally ,"I give up, what is it?"
The boy enthusiastically replied, "It's a puppy!"

Next Generation Christians are 'Brightly Burning Lights' in Former Soviet Union
By Michael IrelandChief Correspondent, ASSIST News Service
WHEATON, IL (ANS) -- It might appear that there isn't much reason for hope or joy in the former Soviet Union.
Summertime violence continued to rock the Northern Caucasus, the global economic crisis has hit the former Soviet Union hard, and the once wide-open door for the gospel is slowly closing in Russia.
According to Anita Deyneka of the Wheaton, IL-based Russian Ministries, several years ago, city officials in Moscow seized the prime property of a Protestant church for no reason or cause.
"Church members decided to fight city hall to get their property back. But the old adage that 'you can't fight city hall' proved true -- two pastors of the church spent five days in jail for picketing the Moscow mayor's office," Deyneka says in a an e-mail ministry update.
"In Moldova, when the communist party declared victory in the April general election, students stormed the parliament in the capital city of Chisinau, and rioting broke out on the streets," she said.
"At the end of July, Moldovans returned to the polls in a rerun of April, but with different results: the ruling communist party lost its majority in parliament."
Deyneka says that as politicians talk about alliances and decry violence, young Next Generation Christians burn brightly for Jesus, and bring His hope to a lost and restless generation across the former Soviet Union.
"Nowhere is this more evident than in Moldova -- one of the poorest countries in Europe," Deyneka said.
"There, young Next Generation Christians gathered for the third annual Lighter Youth Arts Festival at the end of August. Originally intended as a music festival, the festival quickly expanded to include other arts."
At Lighter 2009, these young Christian artists performed original works, ranging from hip-hop, to rap, poetry, theater, dance and video, said Deyneka.
"The Arts Festival not only provided an outlet of creative expression for these young artists, but also provided a place where young Christians, after a full summer of ministry, could relax, exchange ideas and draw closer to God.
"Young musicians from various churches united to help lead in worship during the festival. These morning and evening worship times were a balm to many creative souls."
The second day of the festival, Zhenya softly admitted, "This summer I worked with deaf children. As I saw their suffering, I shut God out. I didn't understand why He allowed these children to live their whole lives without hearing the wonderful sounds of music. For two months, I didn't pray. It was as if something inside of me had broken. But when I came here, God calmed my heart, and now it sings again."
After sharing this testimony, she performed an original work, signing as she sang, Deyneka recalled.
Dima leads a club ministry at a church in Chisinau. At the festival, Dima slowed down and discovered new strength for serving Christ. Anya, who just turned to Christ a month ago, said, "At this festival I met young people who are so open and friendly that I received an unforgettable jolt of energy. I decided to start music lessons this year because I want to learn to create. . . ."
Deyneka concluded: "Forty of these young artists committed themselves to deeper ministry, and expressed a desire to participate in events and projects that help people living with HIV/AIDS, children with cancer as well as other at-risk adults and children."

A DAVID MUSING
This week has seen more challenges in the sorting and sale of our container of clothes in Africa. Pioneering is always a challenge - one which I generally enjoy! Some people are 'pioneers', others 'settlers'. We are all different. Wouldn't the world be boring if we were all the same!
We need each other. Different parts of the same body, as the Bible says. Just a pity our church 'body parts' aren't a bit more coordinated!
But it will come, as Jesus prepares His 'perfect bride'! Come Lord, come.
