GOD'S CALLING HIS CHURCH 1: FROM MARTHA TO MARY
Since the visit of a family member a couple of weeks ago, I have been thinking! Always dangerous! For within our families we see and we analyse, and know our relatives do the same with us! This visit caused me to ponder upon a attitudinal principle that has separated people from the days of Mary and Martha, onwards. What started as thinking has turned into revelation! So this has now become the first of a series on God's call to His church today.Martha was ruled by her by her mind. She saw the work to be done, the meal to be prepared, the house to be tidied. Mary, on the other hand, preferred to absorb all that Jesus had to teach and impart.
I have seen this paralleled in my own family line, starting 2 generations ago, (as far back as I can go) with two sisters, both committed Christians. One was efficient and organising; the other, a little out of line from normal expectations, but through whom the glow of the Holy Spirit shone. Within our family, some were attracted to my Grandmother some to my Great Aunt. These differing natures have continued down through the generations.
Of most interest to me though, is the influence my various family members have had within the church. For it is the 'Marthas' who have been the elders, deacons and leaders, while the 'Marys' have been tolerated, always being regarded as 'a little strange', for they haven't slotted well into the accepted 'church system'.
When looking at the world wide church, irrespective of culture, it is glaringly obvious that it is run by 'Marthas'. Those interested in organisation, programmes, buildings and, dare I mention it, position!
Yet, it is also apparent, that revivals down through the ages have arisen out of the intercession and inspiration of Marys', not the organisational skills of Marthas. God has always used the most unusual, unexpected people to further His work.
One example is particularly appropriate at the present time, for this year, it is the 100th anniversary of the Azusa Street revival and the founding of Pentecostalism. God used William Seymour, a 34 year old, one eyed (literally - and spiritually!) black man, the son of ex slaves to spark the revival. He learned about the Bible from the hallways of Charles Parnham's (another Mary misfit) Bible school, because of segregation. Yet through his devotion to the Lord, the Lord used him to trigger the most influential spiritual movement of the 20th century. The organised Martha church hated him and did all in their power to stop him.
Yet God is greater than the church! That bears repeating. God is greater than the church! His will, will be done! And, like it or not, it is through the Marys' of the world that He initiates it.
Today God is calling out a new generation of Marys. A generation of people fully sold out to Jesus. A generation prepared to lay down everything for their Savior and Lord. For it is this Mary generation that will arise from the depths of criticism and ridicule within the church to usher in the return of the Lord.
Are you a Martha or a Mary? It is never too late to change!
PRINCIPLE 1: God is calling out to Himself today a 'Mary church'.
"Maybe God, we can organise a seminar then, on how to become a Mary?" "No David, for I am roaming the earth searching out those whose hearts are truly towards me. Seek me with all your hearts, my sons and my daughters, as did Mary. Then I can, and will, use you to change the world."

FROM THE WORD
AT THE HOME OF MARTHA AND MARY"As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!†“Martha, Martha,†the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.â€" (Luke 10:38-42)
"At that time Jesus, full of joy through the Holy Spirit, said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this was your good pleasure." (Luke 10:21)
"For it is written: “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.†Where is the wise man? Where is the scholar? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe. Jews demand miraculous signs and Greeks look for wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than man’s wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man’s strength. Brothers, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him. It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. Therefore, as it is written: “Let him who boasts boast in the Lord.â€" (1 Corinthians 1:19-31)

DAVID'S DOODLINGS
RELIGION, REVELATION AND GOD'S KINGDOM: 11012. I am rapidly coming to the conclusion that the biggest hindrance to God building His kingdom is man building his. It's called religion.
1013. Man organises the god out of God!
1014. Religion builds tradition, the Spirit, change.
1015. Religion builds tradition, the Spirit breaks tradition down.
1016. One person's vision becomes their successor's job.
1017. The kingdom of God is built upon relationship, not organisation.
1018. Mankind cannot build the kingdom of God for He has already done it far better than we ever could.
1019. While religion may desire to build God's kingdom, it finally succeeds in building its own.
1020. The kingdom of God doesn't need to be built, rather, grasped hold of.
1021. Religion is of the proud, the kingdom of God, of the humble.

CRANWELL'S CARTOON
Then Herod went from Judea to Caesarea and stayed there a while. 20 He had been quarreling with the people of Tyre and Sidon; they now joined together and sought an audience with him. Having secured the support of Blastus, a trusted personal servant of the king, they asked for peace, because they depended on the king’s country for their food supply. 21 On the appointed day Herod, wearing his royal robes, sat on his throne and delivered a public address to the people. 22 They shouted, “This is the voice of a god, not of a man.†23 Immediately, because Herod did not give praise to God, an angel of the Lord struck him down, and he was eaten by worms and died. 24 But the word of God continued to increase and spread. 25 When Barnabas and Saul had finished their mission, they returned from Jerusalem, taking with them John, also called Mark. (Acts 12:19-25)

LAUGHING AT OURSELVES
***Blessed are those who can laugh at themselves for they shall never cease to be amused****** "Those who can't laugh at themselves leave the job to others." ***
472. NOT HER CHOICE
A pastor was serving communion in a multicultural church. He was using "Pitta Bread" for the loaf. When he got to serve to an Hispanic young girl, she said to him aloud: "I don't like flour tortilla, I like corn tortilla, Sir."
471. YOU CAN'T WIN
When you prepare you sermons on paper, they say that you are just reading off the paper and not hearing from God. But when you DON'T have paper, they say that you were not prepared!
470. THINK ABOUT IT
Two ministers met in the after life. One said, "Isn't heaven wonderful after the parish ministry?" The other said, "This isn't heaven!"
469. ETERNAL REST
A pastor thought that the reason he had no one coming to the altar week after week was because his sermons were too short. The next week he decided to preach for an hour and a half. Sure enough, 18 people came down the aisle to the altar to lay down after the first hour of preaching. He thought it was odd, though, that none of them got up after he was done.

FACTS FOR FUN
LAST WEEKS QUESTION: Who invented Khaki military uniforms?ANSWER: The light-yellowish brown cloth, used generally for military uniforms, gets its name from the Persian word ‘khak’, meaning ‘dust’ or ‘ashes’. The word ‘khaki’ can be used to refer to the colour, the cloth, or the garment made from the cloth. Lt. Harry Burnett of the Queen's Own Corp of Guides developed the cloth in 1846. The goal was to produce a mud-coloured uniform that would camouflage English soldiers attempting to hide in dusty areas. (To help stop soldiers prematurely returning to ‘ashes to ashes and dust to dust’.)
THIS WEEK'S QUESTION: Why do we call twins who are attached to each other physically, ‘Siamese twins’?

540. HIGH ROLLING!
In the game of Monopoly, the most money you can lose in one journey around the board is $26,040, playing by normal rules and going to jail just once. The most money able to be lost in one turn is $5,070. (Great to be able to lose without it costing anything!)

LIFE'S A LAUGH!
MARINES IN TROUBLESoon after being transferred to a new duty station, my Marine husband called home to tell me he would be late - again. He went on to say that dirty magazines had been discovered in
the platoon's quarters and they had to discipline the whole squad. I launched into a tirade, arguing that many men had pictures hanging in their quarters at our previous post, so his new platoon should not be penalized for something trivial.
My husband calmly listened to my gripes and then explained, "Honey, dirty magazines: the clips from their rifles had not been cleaned."
RIPE OLD AGE!
A DJ on a local Christian radio station was introducing a record. "This next one," he said, "is for Charlotte Burke, who is a hundred and eleven. Hey, Charlotte, congratulations on a ripe old age!"
There was a short pause and then the DJ said in a somewhat subdued and apologetic voice,
"I'm sorry, I got it wrong. This next one is for Charlotte, who is ill."
ON Again, OFF Again Mower
I was trying to mow the lawn before my husband got home from work, but our electric lawn mower refused to cooperate. It would run fine for a few seconds, then cut off, run again, cut off. Finally, I gave up and waited for my husband.
He had a good laugh when he diagnosed the problem. Instead of plugging in the mower using a three-prong adapter, I had hooked up the cord through the Christmas-tree light blinker that had been left attached to the socket.

MANNERS AND CUSTOMS IN BIBLICAL LANDS
REMOVING SHOESShoes are removed before entering a house as people will sit on a divan, mat or rug, with their feet beneath them. Shoes would soil both couch and clothes. This led to the custom of removing shoes when entering sacred places. God told Moses to take off his shoes during the burning bush experience. (Exodus 3:5) Wonder if he burned his feet on the hot desert sand?!

BIBLE FACTS
No other book in the world has been attacked more frequently and more fiercely than the Bible, yet no other book has printed more copies, in more languages, and endured for so long, with great popularity, than the Bible. If there was ever a classic story line of the good guy winning in the end, it is of Christ rising from the dead and coming back to set up His kingdom on earth. Some of the following is taken from a book called "Bible Panorama" by Terry Hall.
The Bible gives a central focus on Jesus Christ, with the Old Testament looking forward to His coming-and the New Testament looking for His coming again. This book had to be inspired by God to have at least 40 different authors, in about 20 occupations, living in 10 countries spanning about 6000 miles, and written in Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek.
There are 73 books in the Catholic Bible, and 66 in the King James translation. (The extra 7 books are mostly histories).
The King James translation has 1,189 chapters. If you read three chapters a day, six days a week, and four chapters on Sunday, you will read the entire Bible in less than one year’s time.
There is a cast of 2,930 different characters. There are 1,551 geographical sites mentioned as scenes of the action. The Bible has every conceivable subject included in every literary form (poetry, prose, romance, mystery, biography, science, history, etc).
The Bible has been recorded with at least 10 different media from papyrus to rocks, pen to chisel, leather to clay. There is about 1500 years between the first author, Moses, to the last author John. Not counting the Book of Job, which might have been written about 2000 BC.
The Bible tells of one true eternal God, the source of all life and good. It also tells of one diabolical head of the force of darkness. It tells of man’s inability to remain faithful to God, even under ideal conditions. It tells us Salvation from damnation comes only as a gift from God, and is received by an individual’s faith. Salvation is never earned.
Only God could have given such a book so marked by consistency and lacking any unsolvable contradiction. Read any part of it, and you encounter the plan of God, the person of Jesus Christ, and the power of the Holy Spirit.

It's funny how subjective time can be!LIFE!
Life is short
When watching sport......
But life is so very eternally long,
When the preacher misses the gong.......
Yet, if you time them both on your watch,
The sermon will be shorter than the match!
Funny that!

A DAVID MUSING
I loved statistics! Can tend to get me into trouble though, as they did King David with his census of his army! However, keeping a foot firmly upon any pride, I have been thrilled that, during this week, we have reached 5,000 unique visitors to our website for the first time. Numbers have been gradually building from 3 to 4 thousand per week for some time, but in the last fortnight, there has been a big jump to 5,000.
Most interest centres upon the teaching pages, which is the most satisfying of all. For the teaching is the heart of the ministry.
Surprising to me though, is the ongoing interest in the 'Waxing Lyrical', poetry page. I can't understand why anyone would want to read it, but many do! Tigers for punishment!
Maybe I had now better go write some more! But, more likely, sleep will win tonight!
So until next week...
MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOU BLESS GOD.
His servant and yours

Today's 'Word Puzzle' Answer: THEREIN
TODAY'S 'DO YOU KNOW?' ANSWER: b. False: Luke 10:29-37, 15:11-32. These two best-loved parables are only in Luke. The Good Samaritan calls us to love everyone in the world, even enemies. The Prodigal Son tells of God's great love and forgiveness for all His people, even the rebellious and disobedient.
