SANITISED OR SANCTIFIED?
Recently, as part of an item for our TV programme, we filmed the killing of a lamb, in order to illustrate the meaning of Passover. Well, that is what I wanted to do! But life is not this simple! For there are regulations that, unless your programme is a pure documentary, you are not allowed to show animals being slaughtered. So I was forced to compromise, simply showing before and after scenes.A young man accompanying us, did not want to look at the lamb being killed, although he is perfectly happy to eat meat purchased in a packet from off the supermarket shelf. For people who live in cities, in the western world at least, this is all to commonly the case. We are now over protected from the true reality of life, from death and suffering, in most situations.
This sanitising process has also occurred with our perception of God. We see him as a 'lovey-dovey' benefactor simply there to meet all our whims. The ultimate Father Christmas in the heavens! But God has a rounded character, one of both love and judgement. Yet, in today's church, all we generally hear about is God's love, but little of His judgement. Judgement that will surely be displayed again, as the Bible promises, at the end of the current Age of Grace. There is now so little fear of God that most people, including many Christians, don't take God, or sin, seriously. We are conditioned to live 'sanitised' rather than 'sanctified' lives!
As in general society, we in the church too are taught our 'rights' (of unconditional salvation for simply saying the 'sinner's prayer - actually unbiblical!) while neglecting our 'responsibilities' (to walk as Jesus did).
The harsh reality is that the cost of sin is death. The price of our individual reconciliation with our Heavenly Father is death. Firstly it was the substitutionary death of animals. Under the New Covenant, the death of Jesus. His death on the 'awe-ful' cross on Calvary's hill, nearly 2,000 years ago was a substitute for our own life. The reality is, Jesus suffered the horrible, painful, tragic death of a totally innocent man, on your behalf and mine. He became the 'life for a life', as God required. Yes, Jesus paid the ultimate price. His body was broken. His blood flowed. He died the most terrible death imaginable, in order that we might be reconciled to the Father without having to literally die ourselves.
Yet we so often treat His sacrifice with contempt. We glibly thank Him for what He has done, sitting in a comfortable pew in a beautiful church on a Sunday, then simply go out and live our lives as we wish. We mistakenly believe His sacrifice will magically cover the next 6 1/2 days of unrighteous living, without any fear of consequences. Feeling free to live 'sanitised rather the sanctified' lives. For God's love surely has (and will) cover all our unholy behaviour - wont it?
But this is not what my Bible says. My Bible tells me that those who live under this misconception of God's never ending love and grace will surely face a fearsome judgement!
26 If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, 27 but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God. 28 Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. 29 How much more severely do you think a man deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God under foot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified him, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace? 30 For we know him who said, “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,†and again, “The Lord will judge his people.†31 It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. (Hebrews 10:26-31)
Wow! But then, maybe this passage is only in my Bible, not in yours! You'd better check me out!
My friend, I care enough to warn you, as I warn myself, that we must 'walk the walk', not just 'talk the talk' in order to show both God, and others, that we truly believe. We live our faith by 'dying' to our own natures and conforming to the nature of Christ. 'Flaky Christianity', based solely on God's love while ignoring His judgement, as so often is taught and believed today, will finally come at a terrible cost to its adherents, for insulting 'the Spirit of grace.' Yes, 'It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
We had better believe it!

FROM THE WORD
"“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God.â€" (John 3:16-21)"My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world. We know that we have come to know him if we obey his commands. The man who says, “I know him,†but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But if anyone obeys his word, God’s love is truly made complete in him. This is how we know we are in him: Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did. (1 John 2:1-6)
THE DEAD ARE JUDGED
"Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. Earth and sky fled from his presence, and there was no place for them. And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what he had done. Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. If anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire." (Revelation 20:11-15)

DAVID'S DOODLINGS
THE AGE OF GRACE35. The biggest impediment for many in delaying a decision for Christ is the mistaken belief that the present ‘Age of Grace’ will never end.
36. God’s nature is finely balanced between love and judgement. As His love has predominated for the past 2000 years, how fearsome then must be the single Day of Judgement that is to come.
37. We know in life, that all good things come to an end. How is it then, that we continue to believe that the current age of God’s grace and mercy will go on forever?
38. Why is it that I continue to walk round and round the mountain when I know when the path to the top goes up?
178. God's gracious gift of grace is the reason to walk in truth, not an excuse to continue in sin.
317. God's graciously given grace gift gallantly galvanises garrulous, grateful gentiles!

Last week - THE COST OF DISCIPLESHIP - YET MORE FAITH! Result!
You may remember last week's editorial, based round my 'faith struggle' with regards to the financing of my trip to Africa. On Wednesday, the Lord prompted me to look at and add up the balances in our 3 bank accounts. My base fares, to be paid by Friday were $NZ4269. Upon adding the balances I found that we had $NZ4,272, the amount required plus $3! "Thank you Lord! You are teaching me about the importance of '3's' in You once again Lord!"
Of course, we had the next 8 days to live before Kathy gets another pay. After sending the last dollar we could find in searching the house on Thursday, I was speaking to a friend who asked, completely unprompted, how he could help us. We now have the money to last out the week. Thank you again Lord!
Of course, I now have to pay taxes, visas, passports, and have some cash to take to help with expenses. And a laptop and video camera (operator) would be nice! Just as well we have a big and faithful God, for our requests are never ending! But there are still 3 1/2 weeks to go David! Be patient, and wait for the 'God of the last minute'!
Joking aside, what a boost last week was both for my faith and as confirmation that this trip is surely in His will. And a relief for going 'out on a limb' with you! It would have been so hard to write an excuse! For I am only human, after all! Kill my pride lord!
CRANWELL'S CARTOON
PETER DISOWNS JESUS
69 Now Peter was sitting out in the courtyard, and a servant girl came to him. “You also were with Jesus of Galilee,†she said. 70 But he denied it before them all. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,†he said. 71 Then he went out to the gateway, where another girl saw him and said to the people there, “This fellow was with Jesus of Nazareth.â€
72 He denied it again, with an oath: “I don’t know the man!†73 After a little while, those standing there went up to Peter and said, “Surely you are one of them, for your accent gives you away.†74 Then he began to call down curses on himself and he swore to them, “I don’t know the man!†Immediately a rooster crowed. 75 Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken: “Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.†And he went outside and wept bitterly. Moses and the Passover Lamb
That Jesus came as the fulfilment of the Feast of Passover, where the blood of the lamb was placed on the door-post to provide protection against the angel of death, is generally well understood in the church today.
It is at the very heart of our faith. Let's see what happened.

528.THE DESERVED GIFT
I recall a story my father used to tell about a pastor who had been at a church for 20 years. To show their appreciation for all his years of faithful service, the congregation decided to collect an offering and buy him a new car. So on the Sunday of his anniversary they had a special reception in honour of the pastor and his wife. Lots of visitors come in for the occasion. Near the end of the reception, the chairman of the deacons got
up and presented the keys to a brand new Lincoln Town Car to the pastor. The pastor was so overwhelmed he really did not know what to say. After taking a few moments to collect himself, he addressed the congregation and said, "I just want you to know that I really do not appreciate this, but I sure do deserve it!"
527. WILL TRAVEL
I was casting kids in our church for our annual Christmas play, and I was giving out choices, such as Shepherd, Lamb, Villager. One 5-year-old couldn't decide, so I said,
"Luke, you can be a Villager." He said, "OK," and ran over to his parents. Very excited, he said to them, "Guess what! I get to be a mini-van!"

FACTS FOR FUN
LAST WEEKS QUESTION: a. What exactly defines a planet? b. Which is the only planet to have an orbit that crosses that of another planet?ANSWER: : a. There is actually no scientific law defining a planet, but generally the planet must directly orbit a star, be small enough that it has not undergone internal nuclear fusion (i.e. is not a star or star like object), and must be big enough that its self-gravity gives the general shape of a sphere.
b. Pluto, usually the farthest planet from the sun in our solar system, crosses Neptune's orbit. Pluto is a tiny planet, smaller than Earth's moon, and its elliptical orbit takes 248 years and carries it as close as 2.8 billion miles from the sun and as far as 4.6 billion miles away from the sun. In 1979, Pluto crossed Neptune's orbit on its way closer to the sun, making Neptune the farthest planet for most of the 1980's. Pluto recrossed Neptune's orbit again in 1999 as it headed away from the sun and once again became the most distant planet. (Bye bye ‘til next time.)
NOTE: Of course, this week, the powers that be (perhaps!) have decided that Pluto is not a planet after all.

Answer Next Week.
463. WHY TO LIE?
Studies shown by the Psychology Department of DePaul University show that the principal reason to lie is to avoid punishment. (Will be later even if you avoid it now.)
464. ALPHABETIC KEYBOARD
There are three sets of letters on standard typewriter and computer keyboards which are in alphabetical order, reading left to right. They are f-g-h, j-k-l, and o-p. (Wouldn’t it be nice if they all were!)
465. STIFF PAPER?
Starch is used as a binder in the production of paper. It is the use of a starch coating that controls ink penetration when printing. Cheaper papers do not use as much starch, and that is why your fingers get black when you rub your morning paper. (Rub-bish!)

JUST JOKES
ALLLEEE OOOP!A champion jockey is about to enter an important race on a new horse. The horse's trainer meets him before the race and says, "All you have to remember with this horse is that every time you approach a jump, you have to shout, 'ALLLLEEE OOOP!' really loudly in the horse's ear. Providing you do that, you'll be fine."
The jockey thinks the trainer is mad but promises to shout the command. The race begins and they approach the first hurdle. The jockey ignores the trainer's ridiculous advice and the horse crashes straight through the center of the jump.
They carry on and approach the second hurdle. The jockey, somewhat embarrassed, whispers 'Aleeee ooop' in the horse's ear. The same thing happens--the horse crashes straight through the center of the jump.
At the third hurdle, the jockey thinks, "It's no good, I'll have to do it," and yells, "ALLLEEE OOOP!" really loudly. Sure enough, the horse sails over the jump with no problems. This continues for the rest of the race, but due to the earlier problems the horse only finishes third.
The trainer is fuming and asks the jockey what went wrong. The jockey replies, "Nothing is wrong with me - it's this horse. What is he - deaf or something?"
The trainer replies, "Deaf?? DEAF?? He's not deaf--he's BLIND!"
THE INTELLIGENT ESCAPEE
Three women escaped from prison....
They ran for miles until they came upon an old barn, so they decided to hide in the hayloft and rest. When they climbed up, they found three gunnysacks and decided to put them over their heads for camouflage.
About an hour later the sheriff and his deputy came into the barn. The sheriff told his deputy to go up and check out the hayloft.
When he got up there, the sheriff asked him what he saw. The deputy told him, "Just three gunnysacks." The sheriff told him to find out what was in them.... so the deputy kicked the first bag, which had the first escapee in it, and she went "Bow-wow," so the deputy told the sheriff there was a dog in the first one.
Then he kicked the one with the second escapee in it and she went "Meow." The deputy told the sheriff there was a cat in the second one.
Then he kicked the one with the third escapee in it and there was no sound at all,
so he kicked it again and the voice said "Potatoes."
IDENTIFICATION
One day a salesman stopped by the Jammer Jones farm, knocked, and Jammer's wife Frannie came to the door.
"Is your husband home, Ma'am?" he asked.
"Sure is. He's over to the cow barn."
"Well, I got something to show him, Ma'am. Will I have any difficulty finding him?"
"Shouldn't have any difficulties... He's the one with the beard and mustache."

MANNERS AND CUSTOMS IN BIBLICAL LANDS
THE EXPRESSION 'EATING BREAD'This expression is often used in the Bible to mean eating a whole meal. When the Bible says, "The Egyptians might not eat bread with the Hebrews" (Genesis 43:32 KJV), it means that they wouldn't be likely to eat a meal with them. The expression 'breaking of bread' means 'taking a meal'.

INTERNET TV OFFERS GLOBAL AUDIENCE
A two-week-old Christian broadcaster is leading the way in using internet TV to reach the world with Christian Programming. Faithglobe.tv is a Wellingborough, UK-based station which hopes to reach audiences around the world without the colossal costs of satellite broadcasting. Until now Christian TV stations have been saddled with overheads of £75,000 to £80,000 a month, forcing them to sell airtime to other organisations such as those of US tele-evangelists. Hugh Jackman, Faithglobe's chief executive, says "We can transmit 24 hours a day for under £10,000 a month". The station's technology provider already supplies 70 other niche channels including yachting industry broadcaster sail.TV. A REVELATION OF……. GIVING TO GODIn Christianity, we hear an awful lot about what God has done for us, but much less of what He desires from us in return!
There is a saying that 'salvation is a free gift, but discipleship costs us everything!' For as Jesus sacrificed His life for us on Calvary's grim hill, so we, in turn, are to model Him, and sacrifice our life for God and for others.
In this study we are going to look at the ways in which we are to offer God the sacrifices He so much desires from us - Praise and Worship, Prayer and Fasting and Tithes and Gifts.
My God sacrificed His son Jesus, for me! Surely, the first thing I can do for Him is to offer back the sacrifices He desires of me. Is that too much to ask?
In theory we would probably agree, but the practice of our lives often tends to fall short of our good intentions!
I trust that this study will encourage you, as it has me, to give back to God what He desires of each one of us.

WAXING LYRICAL
MR BUMBLE (Part 1 of 3)The other day I met with a bumble bee,
The two of us together, just him and me.
I asked, "How are you, my high flying friend,â€
As our way down the road, we did gently wend.
“A ‘box of buzzes’ " said Mr Bumble, rumbling along,
In the prime of life - yes, a bee so buzzingly strong.
“I'm on the way to the garden down the road,
Plentiful pollen there, will get me a load.â€
“For I’m a worker bee you see,
One of many, in our big family,
We have a purpose for which to live,
Honey aplenty, to our hive, to give.â€
“Your life is a fulfilled one then,
A privilege not given many men.â€
“I guess it is, in following family tradition,
Feeding the hungry hive’s a real mission.â€
“I learned what to do from my brother,
The Queen you know, is our mother,
It was Jimmy who taught me how to fly,
Led by example, encouraged me to try.â€
“But soon flight, I did learn to master,
With practice, went faster and faster.
Till now I’m known as the ‘brmm-brmm bee,’
Always winning the race to the cherry tree.â€
“Of course, you know you can’t really fly!†I rashly said,
As diplomatic as taking a sledgehammer to his head!
“For the ‘Laws of Aerodynamics’ you know,
State that ‘up in the air,’ you cannot go.â€
‘Your shapes all wrong
To push you along!
Your body’s far too big!
Ever seen a flying pig?’
(To be continued next week)
NOTE: 'Artistic Licence' has been taken in describing the nesting habits of the bumble bee. Unlike honey bees, they are solitary creatures! But that would spoil a good story!

A DAVID MUSING
On Saturday, it was such a beautiful early spring day here that I took the opportunity to tear myself away from the computer and spend a few hours in the garden.Gardening, or rather, commercial flower and vegetable growing and selling, has formed a large part of my working career. Unusual for someone with a commerce degree!
So when it comes to gardening, for work to become play, I have spurts of enthusiasm, depending upon how long it has been since my last commercial gardening venture. This must have been some time ago now, for the stirring in my bones has returned!
There is something about getting back to nature, of working the soil - combined with many stones where we live - that is therapeutic to the soul and good for the body. When we look at nature, the full glory and wonder of God's creation is so clear to see.
While I really enjoyed myself on Saturday, the reality of sitting at the computer to prepare seemingly never ending ezines has returned. Oh well, that is life, isn't it? We need to work in order to our appreciate relaxation. Or so I try and convince myself!!!
Good bye then, accompanied by the sound of tapping keys and growing plants...
Until next week...
MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOU BLESS GOD.
His servant and yours
David Tait
