OUR SOURCE - GOD OR MAN

This leads on from last weeks editorial, where I had nothing to share. No inspiration, nor the perspiration of cobbling something together, just because I ought to.

This state continued through until half an hour ago. Maybe I am going to have another blank day! That would be bad! I would be embarrassed! Maybe no-one will bother to come back again?

Then the Lord showed me again what HE wanted me to write about. Phew! HE came through!

He asked me to share about the second to last time I spoke to a Sunday gathering. It was 19 months ago, but will be etched in my memory forever. Let me tell you more.

I had been invited to speak at a conference in Fort Portal in Western Uganda. I went to extraordinary lengths to get there but this is incidental to the story.

Over the 3 days of the conference there had been a number of different speakers, including politicians, as it was election time. This was a new experience for me, as I am used to being the main speaker. To be honest, after all the trouble and expense I had gone to get there I was a little disappointed in the way things had turned out. However, amongst the waiting I had spoken several times. The Holy Spirit led me in what to say and His presence was there. Thank you Lord.

However, late Saturday evening and Sunday morning, when I asked Him what I should share, my mind was simply blank! What am I going to do? I was expected to speak at the Sunday morning, conference concluding service. It is hard to explain how completely blank my mind was, for the Holy Spirit and I normally communicate well when I am to speak.

When my time came, I got up in front of 400+ people and simply stood there. What can I do, I screamed to myself! Everyone looked at me expectantly and waited. I know, I will get the people to lift their hands to the Holy Spirit. They did. The Holy Spirit came down upon the place and ministered for 40 minutes to each individual personally. I didn't have to say anything!

After 40 minutes I got a note from the organizer to finish as the next speaker had to speak! The timetable can't be interrupted! I was wondering what to do to finish anyway, so I simply sat down and let the pastor take over. The Holy Spirit left and mans organisation continued.

A huge blessing to both me and the people. And a lesson I have not forgotten.

Our church services are programmed and pastors pressured to perform week after week, whether inspired by the Holy Spirit, or not. So what happens? We prepare something out of our own, or someone elses, human understanding. Sometimes, that is all we do, week after week, and we wonder why our sermons are not as effective as we would like or expect them to be. Let us be honest. How many people remember the sermon from last week, last month or last year. Very few.

All the vast effort that goes into Bible School training, personal study and preparation is relatively ineffective if not conceived and inspired by the Holy Spirit.

Who is to be our teacher and spiritual guide? Most pastors and people would say the pastor, but that is not what Jesus said.....

12 “I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. 13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. 14 He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. 15 All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.” (Matthew 16:12-15)

Of course, people have to be taught the ways of the Lord, but unless it is done under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, it will not work effectively.

As leaders, let us spend more time seeking the Holy Spirit and His leading, and less utilizing our own or others, human understanding.

It can be scary, as I found out last week, but if we follow HIM rather than meeting mans expectations and timetables, our ministry will be far more effective.

Amen.

FROM THE WORD

THE WORDS OF JESUS

May we hear what the Lord is saying to us.

Canaanite Woman’s Faith (Matthew 15:21-8, Mark 7:24-30)
When requesting healing for her demon-possessed daughter.

“I was only sent to the lost sheep of the house of Israel,”

As she persisted.

“First let the children eat until they’re full,” “It’s not right to take the children’s food and throw it to the dogs.”

Agreeing with Jesus.

“For such an answer you may go—the demon has left your daughter.”

Jesus Heals a Deaf man (Mark 7:31-7)
Brought by people in the Decapolis area.

“Ephphatha,” (which means, “Open!”)

Jesus Feeds 4000 (Matthew 15:32-9, Mark 8:1-10)
Where another crowd had gathered.

“My heart goes out to the crowd because they have already stayed with me for three days and they have nothing to eat. If I send them home without food, they’ll faint on the way. Some have come from a long way away.”
“How many loaves do you have?”

Found some fish also and Jesus blessed them.

“Take these and share them too.”

DAVID'S DOODLINGS

HEAVENLY TRUTHS GOD HAS SHOWN ME

739. - 809. God has shown me that...

... He reveals himself to us when we least expect it.

... revelation is given in His timing - which generally isn't ours.

... we learn more about Him in the hard times than the good.

... He can turn our failure into His success.

... when we put others first in this world, He does the same for us in His.

... in the end, He always wins.

... in Him, to die is to live.

... when there is less of me there is room for more of Him.

... salvation is a privilege, not a right.

... He can change me if I let Him.

LAUGHING AT OURSELVES

***Blessed are those who can laugh at themselves for they shall never cease to be amused***

*** Those who can't laugh at themselves leave the job to others. ***

449. MY BEST
A man died and went to heaven. He was met at the Pearly Gates by St. Peter who led him down the golden streets. They passed mansion after beautiful mansion until they came to the end of the street where they stopped in front of a shack. The man asked St. Peter why he got a hut when there were so many mansions he could live in.

St. Peter replied, "I did the best I could with the money you sent us."

448. VERY RELIGIOUS
My husband is very religious.....

He won't work if there's a Sunday in the week.

447. AS JESUS DID
Old Pastor McTavish was dying. He sent a message for an IRS agent and his lawyer, both church members, to come to his home. When they arrived they were ushered up to his bedroom.

As they entered the room, Pastor McTavish motioned for them to sit on each side of the bed. Then he grasped their hands, sighed contentedly, smiled and stared at the ceiling.

For a time, no one said anything. Both the IRS agent and Lawyer were touched and flattered that the old preacher would ask them to be with him during his final moments. But they were also puzzled because Pastor McTavish had never given them any indication that he particularly liked either of them.

They both remembered how his many long, uncomfortable sermons about greed and covetousness had made them squirm in their seats.

Finally, the lawyer said, "Preacher, why did you ask the two of us to come?"

Pastor McTavish smiled weakly and said, "Jesus died between two thieves, and that's how I want to go, too."

FACTS FOR FUN

LAST WEEKS QUESTION: Who invented Khaki military uniforms?

ANSWER: The light-yellowish brown cloth, used generally for military uniforms, gets its name from the Persian word ‘khak’, meaning ‘dust’ or ‘ashes’. The word ‘khaki’ can be used to refer to the colour, the cloth, or the garment made from the cloth. Lt. Harry Burnett of the Queen's Own Corp of Guides developed the cloth in 1846. The goal was to produce a mud-coloured uniform that would camouflage English soldiers attempting to hide in dusty areas. (To help stop soldiers prematurely returning to ‘ashes to ashes and dust to dust’.)

THIS WEEK'S QUESTION: Why do we call twins who are attached to each other physically, ‘Siamese twins’?

SOME FUN FACTS

270. FERVENT
Before the Chinese take-over of Tibet in 1952, 25 percent of the males in the country were Buddhist monks. (Husbands then, would have been at a premium!)

271. SOME THINGS CHANGE
When Spain declared war on the U.S. in 1898, the U.S. in turn declared war on Spain but backdated the declaration by three days, so it would look more heroic to have declared war first. (Heroism is in the eye of the beholder.)

272. DONT DROWN EASILY
An ant can survive for up to two weeks underwater. (Ants ‘up the ant-e’ underwater.)

GREAT GROANERS

191. I GET IT!
A young lawyer decided that his life needed a hobby. Since his buddies talked about sailing, he thought he'd give it a go. He went to the local boat show and asked a lot of questions. Everything seemed to be going well when he said, "How do you dock the boat?"

The salesman replied, "Well, you really don't dock the sailboat, you tie it up to a float just beyond the dock. This way you don't bang up the finish on the craft."

"Well then," the lawyer asked, "How do you get out to the sailboat?"

"Good question." The salesman told him that you can get a small raft and paddle out to the boat, or just walk out to the boat, if you don't mind getting wet.

"Oh, I get it," the lawyer replied. "It's Row vs Wade."

Christian Journalist’s Myth-Busting Report on the Truth in Israel Goes Viral

By Adam Eliyahu Berkowitz March 16, 2017

Her trip left her visibly shaken.

A Christian journalists brutally honest report on her news team’s recent fact-finding mission to Israel went viral this week, busting myths about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and spreading the message that the situation in the Holy Land is very different from what most people think.

Faith Goldy tells the truth she has discovered in Israel.

A Christian journalist’s brutally honest report on her news team’s recent fact-finding mission to Israel went viral this week, busting myths about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and spreading the message that the situation in the Holy Land is very different from what most people think.

Four journalists from The Rebel, a Canadian right-wing political and social commentary site, arrived in Israel last week for an intense tour of the hotspots featured in media coverage, beginning with Jerusalem and moving to Sderot, a city on the southern border with Gaza under constant threat of shelling. On a windswept mountain overlooking Israel’s border with Syria, reporter Faith Goldy described how the journey had revealed the truth about the regional conflict between the Jews and the Palestinians.

“Frankly, this has been one big myth-busting trip. I came here with an open mind,” began Goldy in a segment for her show, On the Hunt. While her site has a conservative bent, she emphasized that her team had searched out a wide variety of perspectives and opinions.

“We’ve talked to everyone. We’ve talked to Palestinians, pollsters, Israeli members of Knesset, journalists, people from the right, left, pro-Palestinian, pro-Israel, two-state solution, one-state solution…Hell, there is no solution,” she said in exasperation.
Her first revelation concerned the much disputed security wall. Much to her surprise, it was a mere fence.

“We found that Palestinians can actually freely come into Israel, so long as they are not carrying any explosives,” Goldy said, with more than a bit of bitterness in her voice. “But you know who can’t go the other way? It’s actually the Jews.”

“That’s according to self-prohibition,” she noted. “But it is also because they know that if they go in there, there is a very good chance they will probably die.”

Goldy, who describes herself as a devout Catholic, was disappointed by her visit to Bethlehem, where she was shocked to discover posters “exalting suicide bombers” in the city she considered holy.

Her report on that trip became the focus of controversy when she posted a video on her Twitter account. Her claims that Bethlehem was now a majority Muslim city decidedly unfriendly towards Christians were decried by Muslims and liberals, who labelled her an ‘Islamophobe’.

But her claim was supported by a video showing the muezzin, the Muslim call for prayer, coming from loudspeakers atop the Church of the Nativity, one of the holiest sites to Christianity and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. She noted that there were no women or Christians in sight, as the square in front of the church filled with praying Muslims. Goldy also noted pointed out that in the 20 years the city has been under the Palestinian Authority’s control, the Christian majority has dropped to 12 percent.

In her farewell video from the Syrian border, she pointed out another discovery that shattered the media myth of Israeli brutality: an IDF field hospital treating Syrians.

Her trip left her visibly shaken, as she related the lesson she was taking home to Canada.
“I came here believing in the two-state solution,” Goldy said. “I am at a point now where, frankly, I do not. I believe in a one-state solution. I believe the only way this little sliver of land…will remain free, is if Israelis are in control of it.”

She added a bleak warning to her message.

“I am worried that if you allow any part of the West Bank to come under Palestinian rule, which is essentially terrorist rule, let alone Hamas control, It’s gonna look like that,” Goldy said, pointing towards Syria.

Israeli Yoni Barak posted the video on his Facebook page, writing, “It is important that voices like this are heard, especially the media outside of Israel, which seek to destroy the legitimacy of Israel.”

The video, subtitled in Hebrew, quickly went viral, with 610,000 views and over 14,000 shares in less than 30 hours.

A DAVID MUSING

When we got up this morning it was 1 hour lighter than yesterday! Yes, 3am on Sunday morning marked the end of Summer Daylight Saving here in New Zealand.

For the Radio Announcer and other night workers, it meant an extra hours work - 2am to 3am repeated! For most us however, another welcome hour in bed! Wonder how many turned up an hour early for church this morning?

Time rules our Western lives. This is, often frustratingly, not so in Africa, and is one of the major challenges we will have to adjust to in a few months time when we go to live in Kenya. Incidentally, Webuye, being almost on the Equator, although 5000ft high, has day and nights of approximately 12 hours each, all year!

One certainty though, is that time for me and for you is finite. Fortunately I think, we do not know when earthly time for us personally, will end.

We therefore, as Jesus said in His parables, need to live each day as if it is our last, particularly in a spiritual sense. The Bible says that we do not have a second chance, no matter how some try to twist this truth.

Are you ready to meet your Creator, in your due time? I am.

Until next week.......

MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOU BLESS GOD.

His servant and yours
