MUSINGS ON THE KINGDOM - PAST, FUTURE AND PRESENT
KINGDOM PRESENT - THE KINGDOM PARABLES36 He told them this parable: “No one tears a patch from a new garment and sews it on an old one. If he does, he will have torn the new garment, and the patch from the new will not match the old. 37 And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the new wine will burst the skins, the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. 38 No, new wine must be poured into new wineskins. 39 And no one after drinking old wine wants the new, for he says, ‘The old is better.’†(Luke 5:36-9)
After being asked why His disciples did not fast, as was the religious pattern of the time, Jesus told these two brief parables to give a most necessary warning about 'mixture'. A warning both to the Pharisees and to us today.
Mixing the old 'religion' with the new 'revelation' courts disaster. Firstly, in the case of the Pharisees, it was mixing the old way of the 'law', as given to Moses, with the new revelation of 'grace' as taught by Jesus. You can't patch the old garment of the law with the new of grace, for to do so, you must destroy the new garment in order to get the material for the patch.
Secondly, and for us today, we cannot pour the 'new wine' of revelation into the old wineskin of church tradition, theology that owes more to the mind of man than the heart of God. This is a hard word for us to accept, for as Jesus says here, we naturally prefer the old wine to the new. We all too easily get comfortable, doing things the way they have always been done, and so miss out on the new revelation of the kingdom that our Lord is revealing to us today.
We are happy to believe in, and wait for, the kingdom up there in heaven when we die, living how we like now, rather than being prepared to allow our lives to be changed into the image of Jesus, in order to establish His kingdom upon the earth.
The logical question that arises is, "How do we get this revelation?"
According to God's Word, there is only one way. Importantly, we don't accept David's word for it! Rather each must seek out the truth for ourselves through the revelation of our teacher and guide, the Holy Spirit.
9 However, as it is written: “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived
what God has prepared for those who love himâ€â€” 10 but God has revealed it to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. 11 For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the man’s spirit within him? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. 12 We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us. 13 This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words. 14 The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned. 15 The spiritual man makes judgments about all things, but he himself is not subject to any man’s judgment: 16 “For who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct him?†But we have the mind of Christ. (1 Corinthians 2:9-16)
Now, I understand that you may well be thinking that your church or denomination was set up by very godly men and has developed a tried and true theological structure that has withstood the test of time. And it teaches that heaven is only a post death experience. Perhaps also, a teaching that you will get zapped (raptured) out of an increasingly condemned and violent world, before it gets too bad to live in comfortably, and live happily ever after!
A teaching of future rather than present hope.
Yet the truth of the matter is that, unlike the Pharisees, we are to live holy and righteous lives now.
19 Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, 20 by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body, 21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. 24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. 25 Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching. (Hebrews 10:19-25)
If we accept the 'future heaven only' theology, the natural conclusion is that we can live our lives pretty much as we like, doing a few good things, but not having to live the kingdom lifestyle now. The writer of Hebrews sets us straight!
26 If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, 27 but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God. 28 Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. 29 How much more severely do you think a man deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God under foot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified him, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace? 30 For we know him who said, “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,†and again, “The Lord will judge his people.†31 It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. (Hebrews 10:26-31)
May we hear what the Lord is saying to us.

FROM THE WORD
Wisdom From the Spirit"We do, however, speak a message of wisdom among the mature, but not the wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing. No, we speak of God’s secret wisdom, a wisdom that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began. None of the rulers of this age understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. However, as it is written: “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love himâ€â€” but God has revealed it to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the man’s spirit within him? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us. This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words. The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned. The spiritual man makes judgments about all things, but he himself is not subject to any man’s judgment: “For who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct him?†But we have the mind of Christ.
On Divisions in the Church
Brothers, I could not address you as spiritual but as worldly—mere infants in Christ. I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready for it. Indeed, you are still not ready. You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere men? For when one says, “I follow Paul,†and another, “I follow Apollos,†are you not mere men? What, after all, is Apollos? And what is Paul? Only servants, through whom you came to believe—as the Lord has assigned to each his task. I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God made it grow. So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow. The man who plants and the man who waters have one purpose, and each will be rewarded according to his own labor. For we are God’s fellow workers; you are God’s field, God’s building. Bythe grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as an expert builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should be careful how he builds. For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. If any man builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, his work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each man’s work If what he has built survives, he will receive his reward. If it is burned up, he will suffer loss; he himself will be saved, but only as one escaping through the flames. Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit lives in you? If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him; for God’s temple is sacred, and you are that temple. Do not deceive yourselves. If any one of you thinks he is wise by the standards of this age, he should become a “fool†so that he may become wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God’s sight. As it is written: “He catches the wise in their craftinessâ€; and again, “The Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise are futile.†So then, no more boasting about men! All things are yours, whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or the present or the future—all are yours, and you are of Christ, and Christ is of God."(1 Corinthians 2:6-3:23)
A Call to Persevere
"Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching. If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God. Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. How much more severely do you think a man deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God under foot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified him, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace? For we know him who said, “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,†and again, “The Lord will judge his people.†It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. Remember those earlier days after you had received the light, when you stood your ground in a great contest in the face of suffering. Sometimes you were publicly exposed to insult and persecution; at other times you stood side by side with those who were so treated. You sympathized with those in prison and joyfully accepted the confiscation of your property, because you knew that you yourselves had better and lasting possessions. So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded. You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised. For in just a very little while, “He who is coming will come and will not delay. But my righteous one will live by faith. And if he shrinks back, I will not be pleased with him.†But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who believe and are saved." (Hebrews 10:19-39)

DAVID'S DOODLINGS
RELIGION, REVELATION AND GOD'S KINGDOM1025. Religion is birthed in the institutionalisation of a revelation of God's kingdom.
1026. 'God given' revelation quickly becomes 'man controlled' religion.
1027. God's kingdom is eternal, mankind's religion, transitory.
1028. Religion formalises the spontaneous informality of God's kingdom.
1029. God's kingdom 'upskills', religion removes the 'ups'.
1030. Religion is really 'the opiate of the priests'.
1031. To get closer to God we need to swap the bonds of religion for the liberation of His kingdom.
1032. Religion creates its own standard mould of monotonous mediocrity. God breaks moulds!
1033. Religion is centred upon man, the kingdom, upon God.
1034. Religion is the outcome of the institutionalisation of a God given vision.
1035. Religion is based upon rules, God's kingdom upon obedience.
1036. Religion seeks to control the Spirit of God which His kingdom releases.
1037. Religion controls, God's kingdom releases.
1038. Religion seeks to define an infinite God. By definition, it is doomed to failure.
1039. Religion seeks to interpret the answers to life found in God's kingdom. Surely a direct approach is best.
1040. As religion goes, God's kingdom grows.

CRANWELL'S CARTOON
Then the word of the LORD came to Jonah a second time: 2 “Go to the great city of Nineveh and proclaim to it the message I give you.†3 Jonah obeyed the word of the LORD and went to Nineveh. Now Nineveh was a very important city—a visit required three days. 4 On the first day, Jonah started into the city. He proclaimed: “Forty more days and Nineveh will be overturned.†5 The Ninevites believed God. They declared a fast, and all of them, from the greatest to the least, put on sackcloth. (Jonah 3:1-5)

199. NO BRAIN
A college student was in a philosophy class, where there was a class discussion about whether or not God exists, The professor had the following logic:
"Has anyone in this class heard God?" Nobody spoke.
"Has anyone in this class touched God?" Again, nobody spoke.
"Has anyone in this class seen God?" When nobody spoke for the third time, he simply stated, "Then there is no God."
The student did not like the sound of this at all, and asked for permission to speak. The professor granted it, and the student stood up and asked the following questions of his classmates:
"Has anyone in this class heard our professor's brain?" Silence.
"Has anyone in this class touched our professor's brain?" Absolute silence.
"Has anyone in this class seen our professor's brain?" When nobody in the class dared to speak, the student concluded, "Then, according to our professor's logic, it must be true that our professor has no brain!"
198. TOUCHE!
Old Pete, the town tippler, made it a habit to sleep off his drunks in the church cemetery every Saturday night. On Sunday mornings the pastor of the church would have to go out before services and rouse him, and escort him home before the services began.
Finally he grew tired of the routine, and on Halloween, which fell on a Saturday night that year, he decided to do something about Old Pete. Borrowing his son's skull mask, and donning a choir robe, he settled down in the dark cemetery to await Old Pete's approach. He planned on scaring the devil out of the fellow, and teaching him a lesson.
Finally Old Pete staggered through the graveyard about midnight, unsteadily picking his way through the headstones in the light of the full harvest moon. Rising up from behind a large tombstone, the pastor, calling upon his seminary theatrical training, moaned and swayed in the dimness. Old Pete froze, quaking in his tracks.
"Lord, have mercy!" he cried, much to the satisfaction of the disguised pastor. "It's Death, come for me!"
"Pete..." intoned the preacher in his deepest pulpit tones. "It is time for you to come with me!"
"Don't take me Mr. Death," begged the inebriated fellow. "I'm not ready to go!"
The minister saw his chance. "Then repent, and change your ways." He raised a ghostly arm and pointed to the church. "Seek out the man of God yonder and he will guide you into the paths of life."
Old Pete slumped down next to a headstone. "That won't do any good," he groaned.
The pastor was taken aback. "Why not?" he asked, forgetting his spectral voice.
"Because," explained the downcast Pete, "the pastor of that church is as dead as any of the stiffs out here in the cemetery!"

BIBLE TRIVIA (Manners and Customs - Clothing and Accessories)
THE GIRDLEIf a tunic was ungirded, ie. untied, it would interfere with a person's ability to walk freely, so a girdle was worn when leaving home. (2 Kings 4:29, Acts 12:8). There were, and are, two types. A common one, made with leather, normally 15cm (6") wide, with clasps, such as was worn by Elijah and John the Baptist. The second and fancier one is made of linen, silk, or embroidered material. The girdle served as a pouch to carry money and other things, as well as serving to fasten a man's sword to his body.

South African Minister Credits 24-7 Prayer With 840,000 Salvations
by Adrienne Gaines, Charisma OnlineJOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA - A South African church leader is confident that God answers prayer, and he has a statistic to prove it: 840,000.
That's the number of people Peter Sekhonyane says have come to Christ in the six years since churches in his area began leading 24/7 "prayer watches."
"Our aim is that before the end of the year we will be crossing the 1 million mark of people giving themselves over [to] the Lordship of Jesus Christ," Sekhonyane said in an interview with Britain-based 24-7 Prayer International during last month's Global Day of Prayer, which was hosted from South Africa.
Sekhonyane, an evangelist and church planter based in Orange Farm, located roughly 30 miles south of Johannesburg, said 7,800 prayer watches have been started in local churches since 2004, with the congregations covering each hour of the day in prayer. As a result, he said, 246 marriages have been restored, and 190 witch doctors have come to faith in Jesus.
Two years ago the ministry started teaching children about intercession, and now he says there are 62 youth prayer centers in five South African provinces. In Orange Farm alone, he reports that there are 18 centers with 5,400 children praying.
"Through the prayers of those children, we have seen elderly people, widows, orphans, the needy and the poor receiving food parcels," Sekhonyane said. "When children pray, God answers in a very special way."
Sekhonyane began mobilizing pastors to embrace night-and-day prayer after reaching a crisis in his ministry that caused him to question his calling, 24-7 Prayer leader Scott Bower reported earlier this year. Sekhonyane was almost ready to go back to being a concrete engineer when he checked into a hotel and spent three nights in prayer.
He said God rebuked him, saying he was doing His work but not spending enough time with Him. He told him that prayerless pastors were producing prayerless congregations and that evangelism is weakened when new disciples are not taught how to pray.
As he left the hotel, he said God told him: "Go now and call my church back to prayer. Go back and restore the foundations of my church. Prayer is the foundation of the church." Sekhonyane then began teaching Christians to pray night and day, training teams to instruct others and plant "prayer tents" in their townships.
The evangelist said people who have been praying and haven't received answers should persevere.
"Take your Bible, find the promises and read those promises," he said. "Meditate on them, confess them over and over again and pray to God, reminding Him of His promises, and you will see exactly what we are seeing through the prayers, through the Word of God."
Without prayer, he said, "You're never going to see any direct result. It's the people that are praying that are able to witness for God and to testify that this God is the living God and this God answers every prayer that we have said."

WAXING LYRICAL
Our God is full of surprises! Comfort is not part of His vocabulary! This becomes a real test of obedience.A MINUTE IS A LONG TIME IN GOD
When you are relaxed and enjoying life,
And all is normal with kids and wife.
When you are living in such a beautiful place,
And all is going well in running your race.
You are happy with how life is treating you,
Challenges yes - not too many - just a few.
Then along comes God, with His own plan,
Designed to upset the comfort of a man.
One minute the world seems simply so good,
The next, upon its head, is now being stood!
"David, I'm asking you to shift city and church",
My comfortable brain, with pain it did now lurch!
"But surely my God, this cannot be true?"
"Yes my son, it's what I'm asking of you."
"Well Lord , please give confirmation,
To help me overcome my consternation!"
Over the past two weeks, confirmations I've been given,
Logical improbabilities so great, must be God driven.
"Oh Lord, surely this is what you want me to do,
Have your way in my life Lord, I give in to you.
For you know best Lord, your plan for me,
I accept it now Lord, on bended knee."
Yes, one brief minute is a long time in God you know,
But obey His voice we must, if in Him we are to grow.

A DAVID MUSING
Here are a couple of truisms! Some weeks in life and business go well, while others are a challenge. And, the bigger you get, the more people problems you get.Well, both have applied to me this week. Staff wise, here at Seekers, it has been a challenge. From staff - and money - disappearing, to others making life difficult before becoming 'nice as pie' and regretting their actions. People can be so challenging - except me, of course! (You know I am joking! Ask my wife for the truth!)
Reality is, the more that we humans gather together, the more differences of opinion there are. Both within and outside the church.
So, how are we going to become the united, single bride for whom Jesus is returning? Not by all agreeing with me, I am sure! But rather, by submitting our wills fully and completely to will of the Father as taught to us by the Holy Spirit.
I don't know about you, but I think we have some way to go yet before this truly happens, the time when the church, the bride, will be ready for the return of Jesus. May we each do our part to submit ourselves to His leading, so making ourselves ready for His return.
Until next week.......
MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOU BLESS GOD.
His servant and yours
David Tait

Each week we can lose up to 2% of our readers when they change email addresses without letting us know. Or sometimes, by your server acting strangely and just cutting us off! If you are about to change your address, please advise us of both your old and new addresses here atenquiries@wwj.org.nz and we will happily change our records to ensure ongoing delivery. Thanks.
Please also keep our address in your address book, as sometimes servers will automatically delete your address if there is even a one off problem in delivery. If your newsletter doesn't arrive, please let us know and we will reinstate you.

ABOUT US
WALKING WITH JESUS MINISTRIES is a non-profit, non-denominational, Bible based ministry located in Hastings, New Zealand. A ministry dedicated to developing discipleship, fostering unity amongst God’s people to achieve the Great Commission, and in doing so, preparing for Christ’s return. It is securely based upon the foundational principles of the Apostles Creed while recognising the wide and rich diversity of beliefs amongst Christians in other areas. In accordance with the Lord’s direction, materials produced by the ministry are available, free of charge, to genuine enquirers upon request. The ministry is solely funded by donations, as the Lord provides. A list of materials available (plus some fun!) is obtainable and freely downloadable from our websitewwj.org.nz or by contacting us as follows.

Our role is to bless and encourage those in ministry while promoting co-operation and unity of direction amongst the body of Christ, as emphasised 3 times by Jesus in His longest prayer, immediately prior to His arrest and crucifixion. "… so that they may be one as we are one." (John 17:12, 21, 23-4) Our website is currently being developed to encourage your participation one with another, to share resources, and to enable you to promote events and items of interest to the body as a whole – and have a smile while doing it!
