WHOSE CHURCH IS IT ANYWAY?

THE POST APOSTOLIC CHURCH

The major question now is, "where is the church of the 21st Century heading".

Fifteen years into the new century, it is becoming more apparent that God is 'doing a new thing'. But as we have seen over the past 2000 years, through the Dark Ages, the Reformation and the Holy Spirit revivals of the 20th century, the Holy Spirit will always be to the fore of what transpires.

Regrettably from a human perspective, all past movements of the Holy Spirit have come to an end, primarily because man has codified them and taken over. Like Moses, the world's humblest man and the closest to God before Jesus, when he hit the rock, (which he had done successfully before to bring water), rather than talk to it as God had instructed him to do,(Numbers 20:13) man has always seemingly known better than God. This cost Moses the opportunity to take the Israelites into the Promised Land.

So where do we go from here? What is God doing here and now, and into the future.

THE CHALLENGE OF..... LIVING THE KINGDOM LIFESTYLE

To conclude this series on the history of the church, past, present and likely future from a Holy Spirit anointing perspective, I will finish, over the weeks ahead, by looking at the 'Parables of Jesus' which set out the principles of living a kingdom lifestyle.

THE PARABLE OF THE SOWER Continued

Again Jesus began to teach by the lake. The crowd that gathered around him was so large that he got into a boat and sat in it out on the lake, while all the people were along the shore at the water’s edge. 2 He taught them many things by parables, and in his teaching said: 3 “Listen! A farmer went out to sow his seed. 4 As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. 5 Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. 6 But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. 7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants, so that they did not bear grain. 8 Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up, grew and produced a crop, multiplying thirty, sixty, or even a hundred times.” 9 Then Jesus said, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.” 10 When he was alone, the Twelve and the others around him asked hi m about the parables. 11 He told them, “The secret of the kingdom of God has been given to you. But to those on the outside everything is said in parables 12 so that, ”‘they may be ever seeing but never perceiving, and ever hearing but never understanding; otherwise they might turn and be forgiven!’” 13 Then Jesus said to them, “Don’t you understand this parable? How then will you understand any parable? 14 The farmer sows the word. 15 Some people are like seed along the path, where the word is sown. As soon as they hear it, Satan comes and takes away the word that was sown in them. 16 Others, like seed sown on rocky places, hear the word and at once receive it with joy. 17 But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away. 18 Still others, like seed sown among thorns, hear the word; 19 but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth and the desires for other things come i n and choke the word, making it unfruitful. 20 Others, like seed sown on good soil, hear the word, accept it, and produce a crop—thirty, sixty or even a hundred times what was sown.” (Mark 4:1-20)

We will now complete our look at this parable, by seeing how it relates to the church as a whole.

Before approaching this subject we need to understand that while God remains the same, yesterday, today and forever, our understanding, our revelation, of Him is growing, and will continue to develop until the day that Jesus returns, for Jesus is the full revelation of the Father.

Hebrews 1:3

At the end of the Dark Ages, marked by the Reformation, God started restoring His truths to the church. This ongoing restoration can be viewed as ocurring in 3 principle stages, in line with the crops produced in the Parable of the Sower.

TRADITIONAL/EVANGELICAL CHURCHES (1500+) (Revealing Jesus and Baptism) (30 fold church) The first truths to be re-established through the Reformation era were those of salvation through faith (Luther) and baptism (Anna Baptists). Movements that followed through people such as Wesley, Carey and Finney emphasised holiness and missions, amongst other things. The churches that embraced these truths are broadly known as Traditional or Evangelical churches. eg. Lutheran, Anglican, Methodist, Presbyterian, Baptist, Brethren, etc.

PENTECOSTAL/CHARISMATIC CHURCHES (1900+) (Revealing Holy Spirit) (60 fold church) Round the turn of the 20th century the revelation and power of the Holy Spirit re-entered the church in a major way through the outpouring at Azusa Street in Los Angeles and the Welsh Revival. Speaking in tongues was restored. Churches such as the AOG were established. From the late 1940's onwards, through the Latter Rain Movement, spiritual gifts such as healing, and later, prophecy, returned. In later years of the century this revelation and application of Holy Spirit power 'invaded' many traditional and evangelical churches, being known as the Charismatic Movement.

However, the pattern of God is always in threes, as indicated in our parable. So far, the church has had the two major transformations, those of Jesus and the Holy Spirit. Logically then, there must be one more major development, the church of the Father, the 100 fold church, still to come.

I do understand that this may well be a new, even strange concept for you to grasp, but I wish to show through the scripture upon which WWJ Ministries is based, that this is a logical progression. Revelation 12:11 talks of a people, a church, who would overcome satan. You must surely agree that we have not yet done so.

Revelation 12:11

For us, the church, to overcome satan, 3 conditions apply. The church must operate in the power of salvation through the blood of the Lamb, Jesus, and through our testimony, which comes out of our mouth but from our heart, the seat of the Holy Spirit. This reflects our current two church understanding, as above.

However, to finally overcome satan, their must be a church of sacrifice, based on doing the will of the Father. His will is expressed in the Lord's Prayer.

Matthew 6:10

The Father's will is to see His kingdom established upon the earth! This is today's revelation for His church. His kingdom will be established through a people '100 fold' sold out to God.

KINGDOM (APOSTOIC, BRIDE, OVERCOMERS etc.) CHURCH (2000+) (Revealing the Father) (100 fold church) Not a denomination, not a building, but a people dedicated to Jesus across all forms of church and non church, who will relate (network) together informally through the power of the Holy Spirit, so enabling them to build the Father's kingdom here on earth.

A people who will finally fulfil the promise of Jesus.

May we hear what the Lord is saying to us.

Healing at the Pool (John 5:1-15)
Of the man who could not reach the pool when it ‘stirred’.

“Do you want to be healed?”
“Stand up, pick up your mat, and start walking!”
“Look, now you’ve been healed. So stop sinning or something worse may happen to you.”

Life Through the Son of God (John 5:16-30)
Jesus criticized for healing on the Sabbath and claiming to be God’s son.

“My Father is still working, and so am I.”
“I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can only do what he sees the Father doing. Whatever the Father does the Son does as well. For the Father loves the Son, and reveals to him everything he does; and the Father will show to him even more incredible things that will completely amaze you. For just as the Father gives life to those he resurrects from the dead, in the same way the Son also gives life to those that he wants. The Father judges no one. He has given to the Son all the authority to judge, so that everyone may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Anyone who doesn’t honor the Son doesn’t honor the Father who sent him. I tell you the truth: those who follow what I say and trust the One who sent me have eternal life. They won’t be condemned, but have gone from death to life. “I tell you the truth: The time is coming—in fact it’s here already—when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live! Just as the Father has life-giving power in himself, so has he given the Son the same life-giving power in himself. The Father also granted the authority for judgment to him, for he is the Son of man. Don’t be surprised at this, for the time is coming when all those in the grave will hear his voice and will rise again: those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of condemnation. I can do nothing by myself. I judge based on what I’m told, and my decision is right, for I’m not doing my own will but the will of the One who sent me.

Testimonies of Jesus (John 5:31-47)

If I were to make claims about myself, such claims wouldn’t be valid; but someone else gives evidence about me, and I know what he says about me is true. You asked John about me, and he told the truth, 34but I don’t need any human endorsement. I’m explaining this to you so you can be saved. John was like a brightly-burning light, and you were willing to enjoy his light for a while. But the evidence I’m giving is greater than John’s. For I am doing the work that the Father gave me to do, and this is the proof that the Father sent me. The Father who sent me, he himself speaks on my behalf. You’ve never heard his voice, and you’ve never seen what he looks like, and you don’t accept what he says, because you don’t trust in the one he sent.
“You search the Scriptures because you think that through them you’ll gain eternal life. But the evidence they give is in support of me! And yet you don’t want to come to me so that you might live. I’m not looking for human approval —I know you, and that you don’t have God’s love in you. For I’ve come to represent my Father, and you won’t accept me; but if someone comes representing themselves, then you accept them! How can you trust in me when you look for praise from one another and yet you don’t look for praise from the one true God? But don’t think I will be making accusations about you to the Father. It’s Moses who is accusing you, the one in whom you place such confidence. For if you really trusted Moses you would trust in me, because he wrote about me. But since you don’t trust what he said, why would you trust what I say?”

204. VERY SAFE
A teenage boy and his grandfather go fishing one day. While fishing, the old man starts talking about how times have changed. The young man picks up on this and starts talking about the various problems and diseases going around.

Teen says, "Grandpa, they didn't have a whole lot of problems with all these diseases when you were young did they?"

Grandpa replies, "Nope."

The teen says, "Well, what did you guys use for safe sex?"

205. DAY OR NIGHT?
[I remember] when I was in high school and was in an advanced physics class. Keep in mind that these students were supposed to be the ones more capable of understanding and going much further with some pretty advanced stuff.

Well, our teacher was a hobby astronomer, with some pretty nice camera and telescope equipment. One day he brought in some pictures he had taken of the sun to see the sunspots etc. During the "slide-show," one of the students asked:

"Were these pictures taken during the day or at night?"

After a couple of minutes of uproarious laughter from the rest of the class, he finally realized his mistake.

Andy came to work one day, limping something awful. One of his co-workers, Josh, noticed and asked Andy what happened.

Andy replied, "Oh, nothing. It's just an old hockey injury that acts up once in a while."

Josh, "Gee, I never knew you played hockey."

Andy, "No I don't. I hurt it last year when I lost $100 on the Stanley Cup play-offs. I put my foot through the television..."

A graduate in economics who completed his degree in the 1950's returned to his old university for a visit. He was amazed to see that the examination questions were identical to the ones asked in his day.

When he pointed this out to a member of staff, the reply was "That's true, but of course the answers are completely different now."

WAXING LYRICAL

When writing my book, ‘Eagles Fly High!’ I would go sometimes go up and stay at some
friends’ holiday home about half an hour north of where we live. This poem relates one
of my experiences there. Ironically, I eventually left the words I wrote out of the book
–saved them for another time. I thought the poem though, was worth leaving in.

THE SHEEP AND THE GOAT!

Before starting this story, I had better expand
On what I am doing here, in Bowentown land.
I came to write more of this book you see,
Without interruption, in peace and tranquillity.

My day started well, out of bed not too late,
In shorts and T-shirt, went down to the gate,
From there to go running, but what did I find,
Goodness gracious, my energy was left behind!

I plodded down the road at a snail’s pace,
Praying I wouldn’t meet a familiar face.
For vanity comes quickly, out there on the road,
Jogging an easy way, your friends so to goad.

There was a reason for my slowness you see,
For on the previous night, I had had no tea.
No meals indeed, on the day before that!
My body for me, would not go out to bat.

For I am fasting, seeking the Lord you know,
Praying for his inspiration to help me grow.
But in case you think I’m a super spiritual nut,
I’m also expecting now, a shrinking of the gut!

Next, sitting at my computer, uninspired,
Felt really down to it, suddenly so tired.
I was to write about ‘The Sheep and the Goats’ you see,
Expecting God’s revelation - that should have inspired me!

I looked at the computer, viewed the writing on the screen,
‘The Blood and the Lamb’, left from last night, it had been.
Then the computer, it asked me to save,
The answer no, was the one I gave!

In no time at all, I realised my mistake,
No corrective action, could I now make!
Gone forever, fifteen hundred words,
A day’s inspiration, lost to the birds.

I merely shrugged my shoulders, reacted very well,
Not like earlier days, when in anger I would dwell.
For the Lord had prompted me on the previous night
To print out a copy. Thanks to him, all would be right.

But I’m afraid I was still most unenthusiastic,
More hours of typing, don’t seem so fantastic!
For on my mind was ‘Life’s a Lawnmower Mate!’
So I sailed into it, all twelve verses did I create.

This philosophical piece took right through ’til lunch,
Not when fasting though, you’re not allowed to munch!
So I had a short walk, now taking time to ponder,
About my mistake, my sanity beginning to wonder.

A little happier now, for the poem was fun to write,
Too bad I have to work, so far on into the night.
I got down to it, typing my lost copy in,
Wasted hours really, but that was no sin.

The typing finished, took a wee drive,
To see the area, view how people thrive.
At 7pm I started again by gently rebooting the computer,
But ‘The Sheep and the Goats’, it came not one word nearer!

What would I do? Was my day to be a waste?
Because of one decision, that too made in haste.
But the Lord, he had another idea – you wait and see,
‘The Sheep and the Goats’, came flooding into me.

For hours I tapped furiously on the keys,
Fingers hard at work, like ten busy bees.
Five hours later, here it is - it’s finished!
My earlier despondency, quickly vanished!

Now it all goes to show, I guess,
The Lord can get us out of a mess.
On those days when everything goes wrong,
We can rely in Jesus, if to him we belong.

A DAVID MUSING

Well, this week I have not only watched our NZ basketball team, the Breakers, win the Australian National Basketball League for the 4th time in 5 years, but have also been able to attend our NZ Black Caps beat Afghanistan (That is right - they play cricket) game in the World 50 Over Cricket Cup, held here in our city of Napier. We won comfortably and are the only unbeaten team (out of 14 teams) so far in the World Cup. Outstanding for a little country like we are.

During the week also, we had our first food stall in one of the local markets, selling smoked chicken wings and smoked pulled pork. So it has been an interesting and busy week!

Next week I will give details of an upcoming weekend retreat/conference that I am sharing the leading of with my friend Rodney Francis of the Gospel Faith Messenger ministry.

A ministry dedicated to developing discipleship, fostering unity amongst God’s people to achieve the Great Commission, and in doing so, preparing for Christ’s return. It is securely based upon the foundational principles of the Apostles Creed while recognising the wide and rich diversity of beliefs amongst Christians in other areas. In accordance with the Lord’s direction, materials produced by the ministry are available, free of charge, to genuine enquirers upon request. Our role is to bless and encourage those in ministry while promoting co-operation and unity of direction amongst the body of Christ, as emphasised 3 times by Jesus in His longest prayer, immediately prior to His arrest and crucifixion. "… so that they may be one as we are one."
