WHO WILL DARE TO BE A DISCIPLE? (Part 13)

THE KINGDOM PARABLES - THE WAY OF DISCIPLESHIP - continued

We have now looked at four of the kingdom parables of Matthew 13.

1. The Parable of the Sower
2. The Parable of the Weeds
3. The Parables of the Mustard Seed and the Yeast

We will now move on to.....

The parables of the hidden treasure and the pearl

44 ‘The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.

45 ‘Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. 46 When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it. (Matthew 44-46)

These twin parables are about the importance of the kingdom in ones life. For the disciple, the 100 fold, totally sold out crop of the Parable of the Sower, the kingdom of God is their whole life.

The disciple is prepared to put Jesus first.....

‘If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters – yes, even their own life – such a person cannot be my disciple. (Luke 14:26)

Obviously this in not a literal statement, for the essence of the kingdom is love. But Jesus is making a point, as in the parables above, of what is to be our life's priorities.

He carries on the '100 fold' analogy of the Sower parable here.....

And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life. (Matthew 19:29)

This does not mean financial riches as too many would proclaim, but the blessings of The Beatitudes, which we considered earlier.

The primary relationship of the obedient disciple is with Jesus.....

And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life. (Matthew 12:50)

This brings us on to the final headlined parable of Matthew 13.....

The parable of the net

47 ‘Once again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was let down into the lake and caught all kinds of fish. 48 When it was full, the fishermen pulled it up on the shore. Then they sat down and collected the good fish in baskets, but threw the bad away. 49 This is how it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come and separate the wicked from the righteous 50 and throw them into the blazing furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. (Matthew 13:47-50)

Another parable about the separation of the righteous and the wicked at the end of the age. Most Christians believe that this will happen at some time in the future. But I would like to suggest that we are already starting to see this now in the kingdom age, where evil is increasing and righteousness amongst fully sold out disciples for Jesus, is increasing also.

To explain. On my trips to Nigeria, I have experienced the greatest Holy Spirit, but also the greatest evil spirits of anywhere I have visited. For the one balances out the other. We have all experienced too, the reality that the darker the night the brighter light seem to be.

Therefore, if your whole body is full of light, and no part of it dark, it will be just as full of light as when a lamp shines its light on you.’ (Luke 11:36)

And.....

The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. (John 1:5)

In essence, the principle of 'love' distinguishes between good and evil.....

Love in action

9 Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. 10 Be devoted to one another in love. Honour one another above yourselves. (Romans 12:8-10)

Unfortunately much of the church is a type of the church at Laodicea, the generally recognized end time church.....

15 I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! 16 So, because you are lukewarm – neither hot nor cold – I am about to spit you out of my mouth. 17 You say, “I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.” But you do not realise that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked. 18 I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, so that you can become rich; and white clothes to wear, so that you can cover your shameful nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes, so that you can see. (Revelation 3:15-18)

The call to discipleship follows. This a message to today's church, not unbelievers, as we interpret it.....

19 Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest and repent. 20 Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me. (Revelation 3:19-20)

These people too are given the greatest promise, the promise of the kingdom to the victorious disciples.....

21 To the one who is victorious, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I was victorious and sat down with my Father on his throne. 22 Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’ (Revelation 3:21-2)

Will you dare to be a disciple? I will.

(Continued next week)

FROM THE WORD

THE WORDS OF JESUS

May we hear what the Lord is saying to us.

Matthew the Tax Collector Called (Matthew 9:9-13 , Mark 2:13-17, Luke 5:27-31)

“Follow me!”

Jesus was then criticized for mixing with undesirables, while eating at Matthew’s house.

“Those who are well don’t need a doctor, but sick people do. Go and discover what this means: ‘I want mercy, not sacrifice. For I didn’t come to call those who do right—I came to call sinners.’”

Jesus Questioned About Not Fasting (Matthew 9:14-17, Mark 2:18-22, Luke 5:33-39)
By John’s disciples who did fast.

“Do wedding guests mourn while the bridegroom is with them?” “But the time is coming when the bridegroom will be taken from them, and then they will fast. No one puts a new patch on old clothes, otherwise it will shrink and make the tear worse. No one puts new wine in old wineskins either, otherwise the wineskins will burst, spilling the wine and ruining the wineskins. No, new wine is put into new wineskins, and both last.

Healing at the Pool (John 5:1-15)
Of the man who could not reach the pool when it ‘stirred’.

“Do you want to be healed?”
“Stand up, pick up your mat, and start walking!”
“Look, now you’ve been healed. So stop sinning or something worse may happen to you.”

BOOK OF THE WEEK

TRANSITION FROM ‘THE CHURCH’ TO ‘THE KINGDOM’

PRIESTHOOD OF ALL BELIEVERS

Sadly, the reality is, in much of the church, God's kingdom has become man's
kingdom, where the protection and promotion of the individual church,
denomination or grouping, has become more important in men's minds than
building the kingdom of God. We have moved from a single church kingdom in
the 1st century to over 30,000 church kingdoms now!

From the death of the Apostle John round AD100, we saw the gradual erosion of
the Apostolic foundations of the church. With the conversion of the Roman
Emperor Constantine, the church became a human based institution furthering
4
the ends of the state, or the clergy, or both. The Reformation brought some of
the foundational truths back into the church which has been built upon over the
centuries since. However churches, whether of traditional, evangelical,
charismatic or pentecostal hues have created further division, instead of unity,
within the body of Christ.

'Why is this?' and 'What are we to do about it?' are at the heart of what we will
look at here.

388. TRADITION
During a service at an old synagogue in Eastern Europe, when the Shema prayer was said, half the congregants stood up and half remained sitting.

The half that was seated started yelling at those standing to sit down, and the ones standing yelled at the ones sitting to stand up.

The rabbi, learned as he was in the Law and commentaries, didn't know what to do. His congregation suggested that he consult a housebound 98-year-old man, who was one of the original founders of their temple. The rabbi hoped the elderly man would be able to tell him what the actual temple tradition was, so he went to the nursing home with a representative of each faction of the congregation.

The one whose followers stood during Shema said to the old man, "Is the tradition to stand during this prayer?"

The old man answered, "No, that is not our tradition."

The one whose followers sat asked, "Is the tradition to sit during Shema?"

The old man answered, "No, that is not our tradition."

Then the rabbi said to the old man, "Please help us! The congregants fight all the time, yelling at each other about whether they should sit or stand."

The old man interrupted, exclaiming, "THAT is our tradition!"

FACTS FOR FUN

LAST WEEKS QUESTION: What bird migrates from the Arctic to the Antarctic each year?

ANSWER: The Arctic Tern. This travelling bird flies nearly 22,000 miles (35,000km) each year in its migration (roughly the circumference of the Earth), making it the animal with the greatest migratory range. Takes six months to fly each way. It migrates to live! It lives to migrate! (Gets there, then ‘terns’ round and goes back!)

THIS WEEK'S QUESTION: Where and when was the first underground train line opened?

SOME FUN FACTS

333. A COLD MORNING
A ‘pogonip’ is a heavy winter fog containing ice crystals. (More than a bit nippy!)

334. IT'S ALL RUBBISH
Public sanitation was definitely at an all-time low during the Middle Ages. Garbage was piled up so high outside the city of Paris during the 1400's that it interfered with the city's defences. (An ‘offence’ to the nose of attackers though.)

335. CUTTING COSTS
In Hollywood's early movie-making days, even the stars supplied their own wardrobe for contemporary films. Period clothes were supplied from stock, or by the Western Costume Company, established in 1912. Anyone with a dress suit could earn extra money and higher status in films of the 1920s. (Did they claim a clothing allowance?)

23. Those who get too big for their britches will be exposed in the end.

24. When you've seen one shopping center you've seen a mall.

25. Those who jump off a Paris bridge are in Seine.

26. When an actress saw her first strands of gray hair she thought she'd dye.

27. Bakers trade bread recipes on a knead to know basis.

GREAT GROANERS

180. ARRESTED AND CHARGED
A marine biologist developed a race of genetically engineered dolphins that could live forever if they were fed a steady diet of seagulls. One day his supply of the birds ran out, so he had to go out and trap some more. On the way back, he spied two lions asleep on the road. Afraid to wake them, he gingerly stepped over them. Immediately, he was arrested and charged with transporting gulls across sedate lions for immortal porpoises.

181. FRIENDS?
A sceptical anthropologist was cataloguing South American folk remedies with the assistance of a tribal brujo who indicated that the leaves of a particular fern were a sure cure for any case of constipation. When the anthropologist expressed his doubts, the brujo looked him in the eye and said, "Let me tell you, with fronds like these, who needs enemas?"

182. TWO TATES
Back in the 1800s the Tates Watch Company of Massachusetts wanted to produce other products and, since they already made the cases for pocket watches, decided to market compasses for the pioneers travelling west. It turned out that although their watches were of finest quality, their compasses were so bad that people often ended up in Canada or Mexico rather than California. This, of course, is the origin of the expression, "He who has a Tates is lost!"

183. LOST!
A thief broke into the local police station and stole all the Bathroom fixtures. A spokesperson was quoted as saying, "We have absolutely nothing to go on."

184. NO CURE
An Indian chief was feeling very sick, so he summoned the medicine man. After a brief examination, the medicine man took out a long, thin strip Of elk hide and gave it to the chief, instructing him to bite off, chew and swallow one inch of the leather every day.

After a month, the medicine man returned to see how the chief was feeling. The chief shrugged and said,² The thong is ended, but the malady lingers on."

185. MISSING
A famous Viking explorer returned home from a voyage and found his name missing from the town register. His wife insisted on complaining to The local civic official who apologised profusely saying, "I must have taken Leif off my census."

186. MATHEMATICAL
There were three Indian squaws. One slept on a deer skin, one slept On an elk skin and the third slept on a hippopotamus skin. All three became pregnant and the first two each had a baby boy. The one who slept on the hippopotamus skin had twin boys. This goes to prove that the squaw of the hippopotamus is equal to the sons of the squaws of the other two hides.

187. BY THE WAY.......
By the way, I know the guy who wrote these 9 puns. He entered them And one other in a contest. He figured with 10 entries he couldn't lose. As they were reading the list of winners he was really hoping one of his puns would win, but unfortunately, no pun in ten did.

Limbless Evangelist Nick Vujicic Brings Thousands to Christ, Meets President of Slovenia on European Tour

Famous evangelist Nick Vujicic, who speaks and inspires millions around the world with his story of hope despite being born with no arm and no legs, has shared information about his recent tour of Europe and the thousands who've come to Christ during it.

Vujicic has been posting on social media several snippets of his time in Europe, particularly in Ukraine and Slovenia last month, where he had the opportunity to meet national leaders and ministers before thousands of people.

"Hey guys, good morning. Last night was incredible, 60 percent of 5,000 people in the auditorium stood up to receive the Lord Jesus Christ. I am here on national TV to do a recap, and from here we go speak to the Parliament, the national government of Ukraine," Vujicic says in one of the videos, looking back at his time in Ukraine.

In another video he also talked about meeting Borut Pahor, the president of Slovenia.

"I just finished a meeting with the president of Slovenia, it was a wonderful encouragement and an enriching time. Tomorrow I will be speaking in front of students here in Slovenia, so please pray for us, and thank you for your love, prayers, and support," the evangelist shared.

Vujicic also appeared on Slovenian talk shows where he ministered about the Gospel, and said on Facebook: "Had the most amazing interview in Slovenia! The most popular talk show host talked to me about how my book Unstoppable changed her life and led her to find Jesus. forty-five minutes later, we prayed for the country and God showed up big time! Thank you, sister!"

Unstoppable: The Incredible Power of Faith in Action, was released in 2012 and shared how the evangelist overcame some of the most difficult periods of his life, and how he was blessed with a joyful married life.

"I actually like this book a little bit better, because it's deeper and more transparent, I think. I share about the depression I went through in 2010, and share that basically 'unstoppable' doesn't mean bullet proof. When you can't walk, God's going to carry you," Vujicic told The Christian Post in a previous interview in which he also talked about his first book, Life Without Limits.

"With me, in my life, I know that there are people who can get encouraged to see how God can use a man without arms and legs to be his hands and feet, but I wanted people to know that I am not a superhero, it is not about me, or how well I speak or articulate — it is the Spirit of God. It is an active relationship with him," Vujicic told CP.

A REVELATION OF……. GIVING TO GOD

OUR GIFTS TO HIM, IN RETURN FOR WHAT HE HAS GIVEN US

In Christianity, we hear an awful lot about what God has done for us, but
much less of what He desires from us in return!

There is a saying that 'salvation is a free gift, but discipleship costs us
everything!' For as Jesus sacrificed His life for us on Calvary's grim hill, so
we, in turn, are to model Him, and sacrifice our life for God and for others.
In this study we are going to look at the ways in which we are to offer God
the sacrifices He so much desires from us - Praise and Worship, Prayer and
Fasting and Tithes and Gifts.

My God sacrificed His son Jesus, for me! Surely, the first thing I can do
for Him is to offer back the sacrifices He desires of me. Is that too much to
ask?

In theory we would probably agree, but the practice of our lives often tends
to fall short of our good intentions!

I trust that this study will encourage you, as it has me, to give back to God
what He desires of each one of us.

May God bless you, and you bless God.

WAXING LYRICAL

One of my favorites. It’s self explanatory.

TO BEARD OR NOT TO BEARD?

To beard or not to beard?
That’s the hairy question.
For thirty years I’ve always feared.
This subject - never to mention.

For you see my friend, I am not hirsute,
To grow me a beard, too great a pursuit.
Until the Christmas of ninety- nine, you know,
When I plucked up the courage to give it a go.

Why not, I said to myself, with great bravado,
Willing to be squelched - an over ripe tomato.
If I don’t give it a try, I’ll never know,
Whether or not my beard will grow.

What a terrible fate it would be for me,
To go to the grave, not knowing if thee,
Would grow to be little more than a fuzz,
Or rather, long and strong - what a buzz!

Give it a go David, yes, that’s what I must do,
Too bad when people think I belong in a zoo.
I will break the mould, live a new life,
Then get in strife, for upsetting the wife!

Each day I look at the mirror, what do I see?
Are my hairs really growing, or is it just me?
Maybe I should count them, one, two, threeee….
One thousand, two hundred and nine – yipeeee!

Gently stroking my prickly stubble, do I detect a problem?
For there’s a bald spot here - smooth as a baby’s bottom!
Right in the middle of where my beard should be!
O Lord, please help me, please give me the key!

The Lord said calmly from way up on high,
"No trouble David, to your stylist in the sky.
The designer beard I have in mind for you,
Is just the thing, will surely see you through."

"But Lord," I said, "you’re up in heaven,
And I live down here - at number seven!
Your scissors would have be so very long,
I’m afraid, that little me, you might prong!"

There has to be a better way, was my thought,
In doom and gloom, I was now caught,
Until the Lord said, "An idea – for I know,
Shall we do it together? Let’s give it a go."

Having no experience in beard styling matters,
My confidence level is quite clearly in tatters.
So I asked the Lord, "Please show me what to do",
He said, "Don’t worry son, my Spirit’s with you."

I said, "that’s fine my Lord, but can he hold the shaver?",
"No my son, but with his help, your hand will not waver."
"I have believed you Lord for far more than this," I said,
"It is written, you have numbered the hairs on my head!"

I pick up my shaver, switch it on at the wall,
My bit’s done. Holy Spirit, now it’s your call.
My mind is so alert, my heart all a flutter,
Awaiting the advice, he’s surely now to utter.

A tentative stroke here, a subtle stroke there,
Stroke here, stroke there, strokes everywhere!
Then it’s all done - now what can I see,
Believe it or not – a designer goatee!

There must always be morals in a story so true,
As we gather life experience, on the way through.

So growing a beard,
Is not to be feared,
But stopping the itch,
Now there’s a hitch,
Reducing the grey?
No, give it away!
Appear intellectual?
Truly ineffectual!

So by all means,
Live your dreams,
It’s better late
Than never mate!

For now I know fluff I can grow,
It ain’t so weird to sport a beard!

A DAVID MUSING

This week Kathy and I are preparing for a very exciting family occasion, indeed occasions!

For next Saturday we will be flying out to Bangalore, India, for the wedding of our third son Nigel to his beautiful Indian bride, Savithri, on 23 November.

It is a small world these days, for Nige and Savi met in London, England, where they both live and work, each one thousands of miles, and even more kilometres, from the land of their upbringing. Nigel, from New Zealand, lives in the UK on an Irish passport, from the land of his grandmother's birth, while Savi now has British residency to go along with her Indian citizenship. What a mixed up world we live in!

Additionally, all our 4 boys, our currently only daughter-in-law, 3 grandchildren, both of Kathy and my own siblings and their spouses, plus a nephew and partner, from several countries, will be descending upon Bangalore for a Tait family reunion!

In fact it will be the first time we have had all our sons together for 20+ years, and the first time ever, as adults! A story of modern families spread around the world. I an so looking forward to having the TAIT TEAM, of 5 boys (for I am just a boy!), together! LOL!

Of course, we are so fortunate, with air travel, to be able to do this. Kathy and my forbears came out to New Zealand on up to three month journeys on boats from England, Ireland and the Shetland Islands (north of Scotland), so their families were split forever!

God's family, His kingdom, is made up of people of all peoples, all round the world. May we truly understand what an amazing, huge, diverse family, we belong to.

Until next week.......

MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOU BLESS GOD.

His servant and yours

David Tait

(John 17:12, 21, 23-4) Our website is currently being developed to encourage your participation one with another, to share resources, and to enable you to promote events and items of interest to the body as a whole – and have a smile while doing it!
