TRANSITION FROM 'THE CHURCH' TO 'THE KINGDOM'
A new series, looking at the some of the changes we need to make to move from a 'church' to a 'kingdom' mindset. (See the last 24 weeks of PGIM)FROM “ORGANIZED†TO “ORGANIC†(Continued)
We saw 10 weeks ago.......
"under the Old Covenant there was a separation between the Priests and the people, something which re-entered the Christian church through the Roman Catholics and despite attempts to get rid of it through the Reformation, effectively is still with us today, in so many ways."
Then 9 weeks ago.......
At the time of the death of Jesus, a miracle took place (the curtain in the Temple torn from top to bottom opening up, once again, direct access for us to the Father) signifying the change from the Old Covenant to the New. For it was the direct result of, and response to, what happened when Jesus died on the cross.
So what then, are the implications of this change in Covenants?
Over the past 8 weeks.....
1. WE NOW HAVE A PERMANENT SACRIFICE MADE ON OUR BEHALF
2. SALVATION HAS BECOME A PERSONAL EXPERIENCE
3. THE KINGDOM IS FOUND WITHIN US
4. IMPLICATIONS OF THE KINGDOM WITHIN
5. IMPLICATIONS FOR THE CHURCH
a. THE CHURCH IS NOT THE FOCUS OF ATTENTION
b. GOD'S CALL IS TO 'GO OUT', NOT TO 'COME IN'
c. CHURCH IS PEOPLE, FIRST AND LAST
This week.....
d. THE KINGDOM 'CHURCH' IS PEOPLE BUILDING PEOPLE'S RELATIONSHIPS WITH JESUS AND OTHERS.
We have spent the last 3 weeks seeing that the church is people. Unfortunately, our human religious natures have made it an institution. When we think of church, we automatically think of 'structure', whether it be of buildings, of theology, of ministerial hierarchy or of programmes. Sadly, man has organised God out of the church!
The kingdom of God is a marriage relationship between individual believers and Jesus.
31 “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.†32 This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church. (Ephesians 5:31-2)
As we have seen earlier, in the Greek, the church does not mean church as we know it. Charles Spurgeon explains the true meaning of the verse very well.....
Unity, mark you, for that is the essence of the marriage-bond. We are one with Christ, who made himself one with his people.
The spiritual marriage will be fulfilled in the natural, at the time of the return of Jesus.....
6 Then I heard what sounded like a great multitude, like the roar of rushing waters and like loud peals of thunder, shouting: “Hallelujah! For our Lord God Almighty reigns.
7 Let us rejoice and be glad and give him glory! For the wedding of the Lamb has come, and his bride has made herself ready. 8 Fine linen, bright and clean, was given her to wear.†(Fine linen stands for the righteous acts of the saints.) (Revelation 19:6-8)
A truly successful marriage is based upon relationship, of love between one another. God showed His love for us.....
16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16)
..... and we are required to return this love, both to Him and to others.....
Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children 2 and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. (Ephesians 5:1-2)
Love is not found in religion with its rules, regulations, (both formal and informal), and its demands upon its followers.....
13 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the kingdom of heaven in men’s faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor will you let those enter who are trying to. 15 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel over land and sea to win a single convert, and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of hell as you are. (Matthew 23:13-15)
Kingdom growth then, comes not through manmade church systems, but through personal servanthood.....
25 Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. 26 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, 27 and whoever wants to be first must be your slave— 28 just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.†(Matthew 20:25-8)
Leaders too, are charged to equip and serve others, not to bring them into a church or denomination, but rather, into unity of the faith and Christ-likeness.....
11 It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, 12 to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. (Ephesians 4:11-13)
As we conclude this section on IMPLICATIONS FOR THE CHURCH I ask you to review these last 6 weeks of sharing from the Word, to see how your church (as leaders or followers) matches up to the principles laid out by Jesus and other New Testament writers.
There needs to be a revolution within the current way we 'do church', for the kingdom of God to grow and truly become the perfect bride for whom Jesus is to return.
Sound impossible and idealistic? I know it does! Certainly, to our limited human understanding and ability it is. It is not my place to tell you what to do or how to change. That is between you and God. My plea to you today is for you to search out the truth that God wishes to reveal to you through His precious Holy Spirit.....
13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. 14 He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you. 15 All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will take from what is mine and make it known to you. (John 16:13-15)
AMEN.

FROM THE WORD
A Mother’s Request"Then the mother of Zebedee’s sons came to Jesus with her sons and, kneeling down, asked a favor of him. “What is it you want?†he asked. She said, “Grant that one of these two sons of mine may sit at your right and the other at your left in your kingdom.†“You don’t know what you are asking,†Jesus said to them. “Can you drink the cup I am going to drink?†“We can,†they answered. Jesus said to them, “You will indeed drink from my cup, but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared by my Father.†When the ten heard about this, they were indignant with the two brothers. Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave— just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.â€" (Matthew 25:20-28)
"“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God.â€" (John 3:16-21)
The Work of the Holy Spirit
"“Now I am going to him who sent me, yet none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ Because I have said these things, you are filled with grief. But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment: in regard to sin, because men do not believe in me; in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned. “I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you. All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will take from what is mine and make it known to you. “In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me.â€" (John 16:5-16)

642. THE NEW CREATION
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was activated in Dec. 1970 with William Ruckelshaus as its director. The Agency had been established earlier in July by executive order of President Nixon.
THE BEGINNING In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. He was immediately slapped with a class-action suit for failing to file an environmental impact statement with the EPA. God was granted a temporary permit for the project but was stymied with the cease-and-desist order for the earthly part.
At the hearing, God said, "Let there be light." Immediately, the officials demanded to know how the light would be made. Would there be strip mining? What about thermal pollution?
God explained that the light would come from a huge ball of fire. He was granted provisional permission to make light, assuming that no smoke would result from the ball of fire, that he would obtain a building permit and that, to conserve energy, he would turn the light off half the time.
God agreed and said he would call the light "day" and the darkness "night". Officials replied that they were not interested in semantics.
God said, "Let the earth bring forth green herbs and bear much seed." The EPA agreed, as long as native seed was used.
Then God said, "Let waters bring forth creeping creatures begetting life; and the fowl that may fly over the earth." Officials pointed out this would require approval from the Department of Game coordinated with the Heavenly Wildlife Federation and the Audubongelic Society.
Everything went smoothly until God said He wanted to complete the project in six days. Officials said it would take at lease 200 days to review the application and impact statement. After that there would be a public hearing. Then there would be a 10 to 12 month approval period before....
At that point, God created Hell.
641. LATIN
An old man walks into the University Offices and says "I'd like to enrol for a Latin course."
The Dean looks at him and asks rather coyly, "How old are you, Sir?"
"Ninety-three" is the reply.
"Then why do you want to learn Latin, at your time in life?"
"Well" the man explains "I realize I haven't got long for this world, but if I go to Heaven I'd like to be able to speak to God and the Angels in their own language, and I'd feel more comfortable if I knew some Latin."
The Dean thinks, and then asks "But what if you don't go to Heaven but go to - you know - the other place?"
"That's alright, I can already speak American."

FACTS FOR FUN
LAST WEEKS QUESTION: Is it true that it takes more muscles to frown than it does to smile?ANSWER: Yes. Seventeen muscles to smile and 43 to frown is an oft-repeated figure, especially all over the Internet (and, yes, at university-related sites too) as well as in the popular press. But it's nowhere to be found in any text devoted to anatomy (especially of the head), surgery (esp. maxillofacial or reconstructive), neurology, or the analysis of human facial expressions.
In fact, Paul Ekman -- an authority on human facial expression tells me that he has no idea where this notion originated. It takes as few as two muscles to produce a universally recognisable smile and as few as three to produce a frown. There is simply no confirmation of the saying ‘it takes 17 muscles to smile and 43 to frown’ in any medical text. (‘Two smile or not three frown!’ With apologies to the Bard.)

82. THE READERS
Two retired professors were vacationing with their wives at a hotel in the Catskills. They were sitting on the veranda one summer evening, watching the sunset.
The history professor asked the psychology professor, "Have you read Marx?"
To which the professor of psychology replied, "Yes. I think it's these pesky wicker chairs."
83. THE MINISTER AND THE PAINT
A Minister had a group of trustees over to paint the parsonage. It was getting late and it looked like they were going to run out of paint, but by that time the paint store was closed. The pastor looked and noted that it was water based paint, so they added water to thin the paint and finished the job.
That night it rained cats and dogs. The pastor worried that the paint which wasn't dry would be washed from the house. Sure enough, in the morning all the paint to which they had added water was washed from the house. At that moment the clouds parted and the pastor heard a voice from above. It said "Repaint and thin no more."

The Promised Presence - Saeed Abedini and the promise of Isaiah 8
By Elizabeth KendalSpecial to ASSIST News Service
AUSTRALIA (ANS) -- On 8 May 2013, after more than a week in the "small dark hole" of solitary confinement, Pastor Saeed Abedini (33) -- an Iranian-born US citizen imprisoned in Iran -- was returned to the main prison population in Ward 350 of Evin Prison.
Saeed's wife, Naghmeh, told Voice of the Martyrs (VOM): "He said he felt many praying, and the time in solitary was a time of intimacy with God. He said when he came out, the other prisoners said he was glowing! He was filled with more joy and peace after solitary than going in!!! All of the prisoners were shocked at the change! This is because of your prayers! Thank you! I will provide more updates as I get them. Please continue to pray for his health and his internal bleeding. He has not been treated yet."
To understand what Saeed experienced in that "small dark hole", we need to turn to Isaiah 8.
As explained in chapter 3 of my book, Turn Back the Battle: Isaiah Speaks to Christians Today (Deror Books, Dec 2012), a crisis loomed over Judah during Isaiah's day, for the day was coming when the imperialistic regional superpower -- Assyria (the object of Judah's hope) -- would flood Immanuel's l and (Judah) right up to its neck (the gates of Jerusalem) (Isaiah 8:5-8). While the enemies of God would not be victorious (v9-10), challenging days lay ahead. And so God gave Isaiah some instruction, to help him navigate the crisis. Isaiah shared God's paradigm for threatened believers with his disciples, for God was not going to deliver his faithful from the crisis; rather, he was going to be with them in the midst of it.
During testing times, God's faithful are to trust and honour God by walking, thinking and fearing differently to the world: that is, we are to walk by faith not by sight; think spiritually, not just politically and materially; and fear only the Lord, not all the things people fear (8:11-13). And the promise of God is, that for those who do this, he will be a "sanctuary" (8:14b). And the Hebrew word used here is miqdas, which is not a place of refuge, although some modern translations have chosen to translate it that way. A miqdas is a holy place, a place where God dwells.
What Saeed experienced is that promised presence. This is the same promised presence that has sustained martyrs and suffering saints throughout the ages.
Naturally we all want to be spared from testing times. However, when trials do come then we may be assured that when we exercise faith, God will exercise grace: i.e. when we trust and honour God in the midst of the trial -- by walking, thinking and fearing differently to the world -- then God will dwell with us in an amazing and sustaining way. This is one of the most encouraging and beautiful promises in all of scripture.

WAXING LYRICAL
Just couldn’t leave out this story of the sailing of my friend Neil’s yacht from Whangareito Tauranga, a 30 hour journey down the North Island of New Zealand’s east coast.
One of the longest 30 hours of my life!
DAYS OF ‘CHUNDER’!
When you take a landlubber like me,
Put him in a yacht, way out at sea,
While the yacht itself, does not go under,
The fledging crewman, he does ‘chunder’!
Being seasick’s not a matter of great delight,
Never to be given into, without a mighty fight!
But as the swell rose up, then down, corkscrewing around,
My stomach’s contents, soon over the side, were found.
First lot gone - then I did reach,
Wishing I still, was on the beach!
But another lot arose from deep inside,
Perfectly timed to remove all pride!
Yet still another flow from me did pour,
Surely God - there can’t be any more!
But there was to be one final spew,
And then you see - it all was through.
Hey David, you feel a lot better now,
Stomach’s all the better for the scour.
"I’ll be alright, for the rest of the trip",
Glibly off the tongue, words do slip.
But the sea was soon ready to have another turn,
Oh no! Once again, the ‘gurgly gut’, it did return.
Surely Lord, can’t be anything left!
Of all composure, I was now bereft!
I held on for as long as I could,
Much longer than I really should.
But forth came the spew, in a fountain,
I’m off once again, around the mountain.
Yes, another flow, then a third,
Finally a fourth – what a nerd!
Feeling good again, I must be spent,
For my guts apart, they had been rent,
Nothing left inside, now to come out,
Surely nothing left, for me to spout.
I slept well for a couple of hours,
Fully in control of all my powers.
Now surely I have conquered the sea,
But if not the sea – well, at least me!
More suffering next week!

Today is the first real taste of winter for us here in Napier, New Zealand. It is not wet yet, though it is meant to come, but for us, it is cold! Particularly in my 'chilly office', where it must be under 10C.I can just hear many of you laughing! "You wimp! Call that cold! That is warm for us!" LOL! And you are right!
But it is all a matter of what you are used to. We live in a temperate climate surrounded by sea, which takes away the extremes of both hot and cold. Overall, a very pleasant place to live!
Could compare it to the Laodicean church! Neither hot nor cold! Just warm and comfortable! Is that how I am, how you are, in the Spirit today? Ummmmm!
PS: Check out Napier HERE
Until next week.....
