SAD - BUT HAPPY

For the past 13+ years (690 issues) I have not missed an issue of PGIM, (PTL for my good health) until now. And the past 2 weeks foiled not by my old age, but the near terminal aches and groans of my 15 year old computer server. A decision was made by the WWJ computer guru to replace the old girl with a bright, faster, more secure, new model. Unfortunately the skittish youngster would not accept the wisdom of her elder and needed to be reprogrammed to cope with the modern world of hackers and scammers who infest the net today.

A casualty of the rebirth has been the credit card donation facility, which was little loss as it was never used anyway (LOL!) was the credit card donation facility.

Unfortunately the internet is now like the American 'Wild West' of cowboy films, but is still the most efficient way of spreading the Word of God to the world.

Enjoy - and may the Lord change your life through His Word and Spirit.

And I had a fortnight's holiday too!

WHOSE CHURCH IS IT ANYWAY?

THE POST APOSTOLIC CHURCH

The major question now is, "where is the church of the 21st Century heading".

Fourteen years into the new century, it is becoming more apparent that God is 'doing a new thing'. But as we have seen over the past 2000 years, through the Dark Ages, the Reformation and the Holy Spirit revivals of the 20th century, the Holy Spirit will always be to the fore of what transpires.

Regrettably from a human perspective, all past movements of the Holy Spirit have come to an end, primarily because man has codified them and taken over. Like Moses, the world's humblest man and the closest to God before Jesus, when he hit the rock, (which he had done successfully before to bring water), rather than talk to it as God had instructed him to do,(Numbers 20:13) man has always seemingly known better than God. This cost Moses the opportunity to take the Israelites into the Promised Land.

So where do we go from here? What is God doing here and now, and into the future.

THE CHALLENGE OF..... LIVING THE KINGDOM LIFESTYLE

To conclude this series on the history of the church, past, present and likely future from a Holy Spirit anointing perspective, I will finish, over the weeks ahead, by looking at the 'Parables of Jesus' which set out the principles of living a kingdom lifestyle.

The relevant Scriptures can be accessed by clicking on the blue links.

THE PARABLE OF THE WEEDS

The Parable of the Weeds

24 Jesus told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field. 25 But while everyone was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and went away. 26 When the wheat sprouted and formed heads, then the weeds also appeared. 27 “The owner’s servants came to him and said, ‘Sir, didn’t you sow good seed in your field? Where then did the weeds come from?’ 28 ”‘An enemy did this,’ he replied. “The servants asked him, ‘Do you want us to go and pull them up?’ 29 ”‘No,’ he answered, ‘because while you are pulling the weeds, you may root up the wheat with them. 30 Let both grow together until the harvest. At that time I will tell the harvesters: First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned; then gather the wheat and bring it into my barn.’”

The Parable of the Weeds Explained

36 Then he left the crowd and went into the house. His disciples came to him and said, “Explain to us the parable of the weeds in the field.” 37 He answered, “The one who sowed the good seed is the Son of Man. 38 The field is the world, and the good seed stands for the sons of the kingdom. The weeds are the sons of the evil one, 39 and the enemy who sows them is the devil. The harvest is the end of the age, and the harvesters are angels. 40 “As the weeds are pulled up and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of the age. 41 The Son of Man will send out his angels, and they will weed out of his kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil. 42 They will throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. 43 Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears, let him hear. Matthew 13:24-30, 36-43)

This parable is viewed on two levels.

Firstly, as a picture of the church and the world. In the world we have both believers and non-believers, which can be viewed as wheat and tares. The problem with this interpretation however, is that many in the world have no pretence of godliness, in fact, they are obvious weeds!

The more relevant interpretation though, relates to the church itself, described here as the kingdom of heaven, in which are found both wheat and tares.

Tares are not like the normal weeds which we pull out of the garden with great frustration, for they always seem to grow faster than the plants we have planted!

In Wikipedia we have a botanical explanation of tares. The words translated "weeds" ("tares" in the King James Version) is ζιζάνια (zizania), plural of ζιζάνιον (zizanion). This word is thought to mean darnel (Lolium temulentum),[2][3] a ryegrass which looks much like wheat in its early stages of growth.[4] Roman law prohibited sowing darnel among the wheat of an enemy,[4][5] suggesting that the scenario presented here is realistic.[6]

What interests me is that the Romans forbade the planting of darnel amongst wheat, which both Jesus and his audience would have known and understood the reason why, thus giving a real and relevant understanding to what Jesus was saying.

(Illustration of Darnel)

This parable, this teaching of Jesus, is particularly relevant to the church today where we promote 'Father Christmas Christianity' - a bag of blessings without any mention of sacrifice. I am so sad to have to say it, but our churches are filled with tares who have come to church, not because they are repentant sinners who have understood the need for and requested God's forgiveness, but through being promised a 'better life'. That is, one of more money and less problems. This is not what the Bible teaches. Look at the 'trouble - free life' Paul had!

How many preach this sort of Christian lifestyle?

God is, of course, here to comfort us in our troubles, but not to remove them from us.

2 Corinthians 1:3-7

Walking with Jesus does bring problems, for the world does not like it! Yet with Jesus walking by our side we have comfort, for He has overcome the world!

John 16:33

Are we prepared to make the 'wheat sacrifice' of being 'overcomers' or are we simply satisfied to be 'tare' 'pew warmers' on a Sunday?

Remember, as the parable says, and confirmed in Corinthians, we will all be called to judgment on the final day.

2 Corinthians 5:10

Am I ready? Are you ready?

So we can continue to say.....

THE TRUE FOLLOWERS OF JESUS ARE ONES WHO ARE OBEDIENT TO THE LEADING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IN THEIR LIVES.

FROM THE WORD

THE WORDS OF JESUS continued

May we hear what the Lord is saying to us.

To the Church in Laodicea

“Write this to the angel of the Laodicea church: This is what the Amen says, who is the faithful, true witness, highest ruler of God’s creation: I know what you have accomplished—you’re neither hot nor cold. I wish you were hot or cold! 16But because you’re lukewarm, neither hot nor cold, I’m going to spit you out of my mouth. You say to yourselves, ‘I’m rich, I have wealth, and don’t need anything.’ But you don’t know that you are miserable and poor and blind and naked. I advise you to buy from me gold refined by fire so you may be rich; and have white clothes so you can be properly dressed and you won’t reveal your nakedness and shame; and ointment to put on your eyes so you can see.
“Those I love I correct and discipline. So be really sincere, and repent. Look, I’m standing at the door, knocking. If anyone hears me calling and opens the door, I will come in and eat with them, and they with me. I will have those who are victorious sit down with me beside my throne, just as I was victorious and sat down beside my Father on his throne. If you have ears, listen to what the Spirit is telling the churches.”

The Final Words of Jesus (Revelation 22:7-21)
He is coming soon!

“I am coming soon! Blessed are those who obey the prophetic words of this book.”
“I am coming soon, and I am bringing my reward to give to everybody depending on what they’ve done.”
“I am the Alpha and Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.” Blessed are those who wash their robes so that they have the right to the tree of life, and can enter into the city through the gates.
Those outside the city are dogs, those who practice witchcraft, those who are sexually immoral, those who murder, those who worship idols, and all those who love and invent lies.
“I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you this testimony to share with the churches. I am both the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star.”
“Yes, I am coming soon.”

FACTS FOR FUN

LAST WEEKS QUESTION: When did Mother's Day first come into being?

ANSWER: Mother's Day was first suggested by Julia Ward Howe, a woman’s suffrage leader, and also author of ‘The Battle Hymn of the Republic,’ in 1872. She envisioned it as a day to celebrate peace and wanted it to be June 2. In 1907, West Virginian Anna Jarvis began serious campaigning for a ‘Mother's Day’ to be held the second Sunday in May. Woodrow Wilson approved this as a national holiday in 1915 in the US and since then it has spread around the world. (What mother doesn’t want peace?)

THIS WEEK'S QUESTION: Can your eyes pop out when you sneeze?

LIFE'S A LAUGH

13. HERE ARE YOU FROM?
About a year ago my sister, who lives in Virginia, was talking with her four year old son, Brent. He was asking her why all their relatives from Wisconsin talk funny and
sound like their noses are plugged up.

"They think we have an accent," she replied.

"But they have an accent, right?" Brent asked. "They talk funny."

"Everybody talks in different ways" she tried to explain. "To them, we sound like we talk very slow and all our words are d-r-a-w-n out."

His eyes got big, and he whispered seriously, "Oh, no. You mean they hear funny too?"

14. CHARACTERISED?
My kids love going to the Web, and they keep track of their passwords by writing them on Post-it notes. I noticed their Disney password was "MickeyMinnieGoofyPluto," and so I asked why it was so long.

"Because," my son explained, "they say it has to have at least four characters."

15.REVENGE!
Early one evening a gentleman scuttled out to his garage and pulled the lawn furniture out onto the driveway. Shortly after followed the lawnmower, a few gardening tools and a bicycle.

A curious neighbour wandered over and asked if he was going to have a garage sale.

"No," replied the gentleman, "my son just bought his first car and right now he's getting ready for a big date."

"So what's with all the stuff?" asked the neighbour.

"Well, after years of moving tricycles, toys and sports equipment out of the way every time I came home from work I wanted to make sure the driveway was ready for him."

16. SOME THINGS NEVER CHANGE
The passengers were leaving the plane after landing, and one smiling, satisfied passenger paused to congratulate the flight attendant.

"Stewardess," he said happily, "I want to compliment you and the crew and especially the captain for getting here right on time. It's not often that an airline gets to where it's going exactly when they claim it will. I'm going to call your home office and let them know how pleased I am."

"Why, thank you, sir," the flight attendant answered, "but I think you should know--this is yesterday's flight."

Iraq: ISIS causes people to turn to Christ at stunning rate

Members of an Iraqi ministry team in the Kurdish capital Erbil, who are supplying displaced people with food, clothing, beds and medicine, recently came into contact with a colonel from the Peshmerga forces battling ISIS. The colonel inquired about the reason for offering all this aid. What was the team’s motivation, what was the source of it?

“We spoke with him explicitly. We explained that Christ taught us to love and express our love to people in a practical way,” said the team director, who informed the officer that all relief items had been donated or purchased locally. The Peshmerga colonel was quick to respond. “You see, the Arabs around us in the Gulf states, which claim to be religious Muslims, have not sent us anything but terrorists,” he told the ministry team members. “But you who follow Christ send love and peace and goodness to people every day.”

“After we had a long talk with him about Christ, he bowed and prayed, asking Christ into his life,” the team director reports. “And he said, ‘Today I am the happiest person - I've had the privilege of making this decision,’ and he received a copy of the Bible.”

The colonel's experience was just one of many taking place in Iraq. In cities of refuge like Erbil - for people displaced from their homes in other parts of Iraq - people are turning to Christ at a stunning pace. Tent churches are springing up in the makeshift camps. Under normal circumstances, mission strategies focus on how to proclaim Christ effectively, but the challenge now is keeping pace with the number who would receive Him.

As a result of this trend, some church leaders and workers for ministry organizations are remaining in Iraq even as the cruel practices of ISIS - beheading Iraqi children who refuse to deny Christ in Qaroqosh and Western journalists elsewhere - gain greater notoriety. “I think of workers who stayed behind in Mosul and the surrounding areas because there are so many who are receptive to the Gospel,” says the ministry team leader. “They are willing to risk being in an area under the rule of ISIS for the privilege of more and more fruit for Christ.”

“We need to intercede for these workers. They are always in danger. They need God's power to show His love to the thousands of helpless people.”

WAXING LYRICAL

God can talk to us when we are relaxing too. Some of my best inspirations and times
with God come when I am relaxing in the spa pool. Great excuse to stay in!

DRIPS AND DROPS

Relaxing in the spa, after my workout,
Pondering awhile, what life is all about,
When a drip of rain, upon me, it did fall,
These musings to my mind, it did recall!
A drip of inspiration for me!

After a shower, I ran to my office downstairs,
Recording my thoughts – yes, somebody cares,
Then upstairs again, to help the wife,
Always good, to keep out of strife!
Going back down on my computer to type,
Now getting caught up with all the hype,
Punching out the words I have been given
Before I forget them - with joy I am driven.
And so this poem begins to flow,
Full of good cheer, with me aglow.
The keyboard is now being punched so fast,
Sweat on my forehead, it breaks out at last.
A drip of perspiration for me!

But as so often is the case,
When the words I do chase,
They decide to run away,
No longer know what to say.
Sitting staring at the screen,
With frustration I do scream!
A teardrop falls from my eye,
No one’s here, on me to spy!
A drip of desperation for me!

"Do you want my help?" says a voice inside,
"Now I have your attention, you cannot hide!"
"Yes Holy Spirit, you sure have it indeed,
Need you – please bring me up to speed!"

"David, there’s a difference between a drip and a drop,
You need to learn it, if your education’s not to stop,
I’ll show you some disciples, from the Bible my son,
How they learned their lessons, a real good job done!"
A drip of revelation for me!

"The Apostle John on the Island of Patmos,
Sat on a hard rock, there at a bit of a loss,
Cried out to me in frenetic frustration,
Gave him there, his greatest inspiration.
For a drop of ‘Revelation’ he was given.

The Apostle Paul on the other hand,
In dedication, he travelled the land,
Much perspiration was his thing,
Salvation messages he did bring,
To the peoples of the known world,
The banner of God indeed unfurled.
He was rewarded in a special way,
Allowed to visit heaven, just for a day.
For a drop of ‘Visitation’ he was given!"

Jesus himself is the ultimate example
Whose experience, all need to sample.
Set out in life to do his Father’s word,
Doing all of it, that is, not just a third.
He came to earth, to give up his life,
Living for his Father, without a wife.
So many drops of blood he did perspire,
Fulfilling God’s purpose, his only desire.
Finally to die on a godforsaken cross,
Separated from above, the ultimate loss.
After three days, in rising from the grave
With rejoicing, eternal life to us he gave.
Already three have seen glimpses of this heavenly glory,
Followers of the cross, this has become our eternal story.
For a drop of ‘Transfiguration’ they were given!

Mulling over what the Spirit has said,
Of the glory of Jesus, alive and dead.
Realising a drip I’d been, for far too long,
Ignoring his drops of blood, oh so strong.
No longer can deny what he’s done for me,
In giving himself, there upon that tree.

Now the innumerable drips of tears, sweat and rain, so often experienced in this land,
Can become drops of inspiration, revelation and visitation, when placed in his hand.
