TRANSFORMATION OF THE CHURCH: 1. RESTORATION OF HOLY SPIRIT POWER AND DIRECTION

Every church and church grouping thinks they are led by the Holy Spirit! In many cases this may once have been so, but the harsh reality is, people quickly take over from the Holy Spirit.

How can I say this? It is simple. Every visitation, or revival as we call it, of the Holy Spirit since the time of the first one on the Day of Pentecost after the resurrection of Jesus, has ended, has finished. Why? Right from the beginning of the church, mankind has known better, finally manipulating the Holy Spirit visitation, until the 'gentleman Spirit' has left, saddened by our human reaction to His presence and guidance.

But do we need the Holy Spirit to guide us individually and as the church? I could quote scriptures, but what I want to do today is to take a brief look at His practical effect upon the Disciples, the initial leaders of the early New Testament church.

We have the 11 - reduced from 12, through the treachery of Judas. A rag tag bunch they were too. In spite of having lived with Jesus for 3 1/2 years, they slept, then deserted Jesus in His greatest hour of need, and one, at least, denied having ever known Him. Even after the wonder of His resurrection, Thomas still wouldn't believe until he could physically touch the wounds of Jesus.

Following His Ascension they decided, in their human wisdom, to appoint Matthias as the replacement apostle for Judas, using the Old Covenant method of casting lots. A disaster! Jesus Himself, later chose and appeared to His replacement choice, that completely unsuitable candidate in the apostles' eyes, Paul.

Yet amazingly, something happened to change this group of 11 apostles, plus Paul, to make them all except die as martyrs for Jesus! John, the single exception, was allegedly boiled in oil without dying, then banished to Patmos, no holiday camp.

Several years ago, I visited the site in India where the now, non-doubting Thomas made landfall and converted the first Christians in India. A Roman Catholic church is on the site and a beautiful presence of the Holy Spirit permeates the surroundings. A fantastic experience! He was finally martyred near Chennai (formerly Madras) on the opposite coast of this great country.

What happened to so dramatically change these men? We all know!

When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. (Acts 2:1-4)

Yes, the visitation, then habitation, of the Holy Spirit changed these men from misfits to martyrs!

What about the teachings of Jesus, you may well ask? Certainly they gave substance and direction to the life the apostles were now about to embark on, but the power to change them from wimps to winners for Jesus was provided by the impartation and habitation of the Holy Spirit on that day precious Pentecost day.

Throughout history, nothing has changed. Those who radically change the world for Jesus have been, and invariably still are, filled with the powerful presence of the Holy Spirit.

Yes, the first and primary transformation required in the church today is the restoration of Holy Spirit Power and direction.

JESUS APPEARS TO THOMAS
"Now Thomas (called Didymus), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe it.” A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.”

30 Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. (John 20:24-30)

"In those days Peter stood up among the believers (a group numbering about a hundred and twenty) and said, “Brothers, the Scripture had to be fulfilled which the Holy Spirit spoke long ago through the mouth of David concerning Judas, who served as guide for those who arrested Jesus— he was one of our number and shared in this ministry.” (With the reward he got for his wickedness, Judas bought a field; there he fell headlong, his body burst open and all his intestines spilled out. Everyone in Jerusalem heard about this, so they called that field in their language Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.) “For,” said Peter, “it is written in the book of Psalms, ”‘May his place be deserted; let there be no one to dwell in it,’ and, ”‘May another take his place of leadership.’ Therefore it is necessary to choose one of the men who have been with us the whole time the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, beginning from John’s baptism to the time when Jesus was taken up from us. For one of these must become a witness with us of his resurrection.” So they proposed two men: Joseph called Barsabbas (also known as Justus) and Matthias. Then they prayed, “Lord, you know everyone’s heart. Show us which of these two you have chosen to take over this apostolic ministry, which Judas left to go where he belongs.” Then they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias; so he was added to the eleven apostles (Acts 1:15-26)

THE HOLY SPIRIT COMES AT PENTECOST
"When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. Utterly amazed, they asked: “Are not all these men who are speaking Galileans? Then how is it that each of us hears them in his own native language? Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!” Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, “What does this mean?” Some, however, made fun of them and said, “They have had too much wine.” (Acts 2:1-13)

GREAT NEWS FOR africa arise'!

For months now, we have been searching for suitable premises for a large shop and sorting/storage area. We have had 2 agreements fall over, one through Council parking regulations and another where the prospective landlord's lawyer thought (correctly!) we didn't have enough assets to cover the rent.

The poem under 'A DAVID MUSING' refers to the latter part of the wait and the journey it has taken me on.

However the Lord knows best! For in the last 10 days, a better deal than we could ever have hoped for (2-3 times the space with good exposure at a lower price and with 3 months rental holiday!) has become available. In hindsight (a wonderful thing!) the rejections and turn downs have been the best thing that could happen. Funny that! Although it is not funny at the time!

A real lesson in learning to trust Him more!

The premises are part of an old wool store, where bales of wool from New Zealand's 40 million sheep (or rather, some of them) used to be stored before shipment overseas. Not sure where they go now!

The photo is an external view before renovation. It is big. Our part is 1250 sq. m. (13,500 sq. ft.) out of a total area of 8,000 metres.

The shop will provide quality second hand goods for the poor, and others, locally, while providing funds for the sending of clothing and other items to Africa. This is a huge project for which the Lord has to provide, as He has already done with the premises. He may even want to provide through you! LAST WEEKS QUESTION: What controversy involving Pluto occurred in
1999?

ANSWER: In January 1999, misleading reports appeared in the media
that suggested Pluto was about to lose its status as a planet and be
reclassified as a minor planet or even an asteroid. The furore was caused
by a suggestion to include Pluto in a specialised listing of ‘Trans-
Neptunian Objects’, a group of smaller objects that have been discovered
in the outer solar system beyond Neptune's orbit. These objects are
similar to Pluto, though drastically smaller. Astronomers did not intend to
imply that Pluto was not a planet by suggesting its inclusion on the list,
but the assumption that Pluto was being ‘demoted’ caused an uproar
anyway and the International Astronomical Union had to issue a
statement confirming that Pluto remained our ninth planet. (Mickey and
Donald were so pleased not to lose their good friend!)

A man goes into a pet shop to buy a parrot. The shop owner points to three identical looking parrots on a perch and says: "The parrot to the left costs 500 dollars".

"Why does the parrot cost so much?" the customer asks. The owner says, "Well, it knows how to use a computer."

Another lesson God gave me on Bowentown Beach.

THE PATH
In desperation now, I looked all around,
There must be a way out of this mess I am in.
A faint track there, my eyes have found,
Is named ‘Repentance’, for forgiveness of sin.

This path appeared difficult at first glance,
Through bushes, and damp, long grass,
But it was the only way my life to enhance,
If in the end, my test I was to pass.

So I found my way back to the path of life,
Grateful that Jesus made a way through the cross.
Having left the path where wrong was so rife,
In the sewage pond, He would no longer me toss.

He said, "My son, you made a mistake,
It wasn’t really your heart to go that way.
But I came to forgive mistakes you make,
Take care now, not to deliberately stray."

WALKING WITH JESUS MINISTRIES is a non-profit, non-denominational, Bible based ministry located in Hastings, New Zealand. A ministry dedicated to developing discipleship, fostering unity amongst God’s people to achieve the Great Commission, and in doing so, preparing for Christ’s return. It is securely based upon the foundational principles of the Apostles Creed while recognising the wide and rich diversity of beliefs amongst Christians in other areas. In accordance with the Lord’s direction, materials produced by the ministry are available, free of charge, to genuine enquirers upon request. Our role is to bless and encourage those in ministry while promoting co-operation and unity of direction amongst the body of Christ, as emphasised 3 times by Jesus in His longest prayer, immediately prior to His arrest and crucifixion. "… so that they may be one as we are one."
