WHOSE CHURCH IS IT ANYWAY?
THE POST APOSTOLIC CHURCHAgain I acknowledge that much of the material that follows is drawn from the excellent publication by Eddie L. Hyatt, 2000 Years of Charismatic Christianity. For specific references to the writings quoted, please refer to that publication.
We continue looking at prominent spirit filled men who lived during the 7th to 15th centuries AD.
600AD-1517
We will discover over coming weeks that there was ongoing Holy Spirit activity in the midst of the Dark Ages, both within and outside the dominant Roman Catholic Church of the time.
A MONASTIC REVIVAL
After a period of spiritual inactivity in the Roman Catholic Church, the 11th century saw genuine spiritual renewal, perticularly within the monastic movement. New orders emerged including the Cistercians, the Franciscans and the Dominicans who, particularly the latter two, left their monasteries and went out into the world. Know as the 'preaching friars', they preached in the common languages and helped the people in many ways.
Characteristically they.....
1. Literally obeyed the commands of Jesus.
2. Took vows of poverty, chastity and obedience.
3. Went on preaching missions without money or clothing, depending on God and people for their sustenance.
4. Saw miracles in their own, and the people's lives.
5. Recovered the purity of faith of an earlier day.
(Isn't amazing what happens when we fully trust in the Lord?)
BERNARD OF CLAIRVAUX (1090-1153) Born of noble parentage in Fontaines, Burgundy, now east-central France, by choice he entered the monastery at Citeaux in 1112. Making remarkable progress, he was commissioned by the abbot of Citeaux to establish a new monastery at Clairvaux in 1115.
Becoming widely influential through his travels, he was largely responsible for the Second Crusade (1147-1149), with noblemen, bishops, princes and popes seeking his counsel.
Bernard also gained recognition because of the many miracles that occurred in his ministry. It was reported, "From all quarters sick persons were conveyed to him by the friends who sought from him a cure." Many miracles took place. A deaf-mute boy regained his hearing and spoke. The monk Gottfried reported of a blind boy after having his eyes opened shouting, "I see day, I see everybody, I see people with hair." Clapping his hands in delight, he exclaimed, "My God, now I will no more dash my feet against the stones."
HILDEGARD OF BINGEN (1098-1179) (pictured) Has been recognised as "the most prominent woman in the Church of her day." The leader of a Benedictine convent near Bingen on the Rhine in Germany, she was widely recognized for her power in prayer, being petitioned by many, including church officials, to intercede on their behalf. Many came to Hildegard seeking healing, even from as far away as Sweden. She applied no formula but relied upon the inner leading of the Holy Spirit for a unique solution in each case. It is reported, "Sometimes the medium used was a prayer, sometimes a simple word of command, sometimes water which, as in one case, healed paralysis of the tongue." Contemporaries reported that "scarcely a sick person came to her without being healed."
Hildegard had visions while wide-awake and perfectly conscious. What she saw, she saw by "using the eyes and ears of the inner person according to the will of God."
Additionally, she spoke and sang in tongues. Her colleagues referred to these spiritual songs as "concerts in the Spirit."
Misunderstood by some, her critics denounced her as being demon possessed. She was defended, however, by her friend, Bernard of Clairvaux, who also commended her to Pope Eugenius III. In 1148, Eugenius personally visited her and, after investigating her revelations, "recognized the genuineness of her miracles and encouraged her to continue her course."
So we can continue to say.....

THE WORDS OF JESUS continuedThe Lord has asked me to compile a publication of the words Jesus spoke, as recorded in the New Testament in chronological order. I have got about halfway, and have found it very enlightening and encouraging in my relationship with Him. The final version will have changes of layout and version used, but this is a foretaste of things to come. Of course, it is not a Bible substitute! I Hope you find it helpful too, in your walk with Jesus.
Sending Out the Twelve (Matthew 10:1-42, Mark 6:7-13, Luke 9:1-6)
“Do not go among the Gentiles or enter any town of the Samaritans. 6 Go rather to the lost sheep of Israel. 7 As you go, preach this message: ‘The kingdom of heaven is near.’ 8 Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received, freely give. 9 Do not take along any gold or silver or copper in your belts; 10 take no bag for the journey, or extra tunic, or sandals or a staff; for the worker is worth his keep.
11 “Whatever town or village you enter, search for some worthy person there and stay at his house until you leave. 12 As you enter the home, give it your greeting. 13 If the home is deserving, let your peace rest on it; if it is not, let your peace return to you. 14 If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, shake the dust off your feet when you leave that home or town. 15 I tell you the truth, it will be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town. 16 I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.
17 “Be on your guard against men; they will hand you over to the local councils and flog you in their synagogues. 18 On my account you will be brought before governors and kings as witnesses to them and to the Gentiles. 19 But when they arrest you, do not worry about what to say or how to say it. At that time you will be given what to say, 20 for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.
21 “Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; children will rebel against their parents and have them put to death. 22 All men will hate you because of me, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved. 23 When you are persecuted in one place, flee to another. I tell you the truth, you will not finish going through the cities of Israel before the Son of Man comes.
24 “A student is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master. 25 It is enough for the student to be like his teacher, and the servant like his master. If the head of the house has been called Beelzebub, how much more the members of his household!
26 “So do not be afraid of them. There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known. 27 What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight; what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the roofs. 28 Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell. 29 Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father. 30 And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. 31 So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.
32 “Whoever acknowledges me before men, I will also acknowledge him before my Father in heaven. 33 But whoever disowns me before men, I will disown him before my Father in heaven.
34 “Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35 For I have come to turn

a daughter against her mother,
a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law—
36 a man’s enemies will be the members of his own
household.’
37 “Anyone who loves his father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; 38 and anyone who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39 Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.
40 “He who receives you receives me, and he who receives me receives the one who sent me. 41 Anyone who receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward, and anyone who receives a righteous man because he is a righteous man will receive a righteous man’s reward. 42 And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is my disciple, I tell you the truth, he will certainly not lose his reward.â€

818. WALK ON WATER
Dallas heard that his father, grandfather and great-grandfather had all walked on water on their 21st birthdays.
So, on his 21st birthday, Dallas and his big brother Damon, headed out to the lake. "If they did it, I can too!" he insisted.
When Dallas and Damon arrived at the lake, they rented a canoe and began paddling. When they got to the middle of the lake, Dallas stepped off of the side of the boat... and nearly drowned.
Furious and somewhat embarrassed, he and Damon headed for home.
When Dallas arrived back at the family home, he asked his grandmother for an explanation. "Grandma, why can't I walk on water like my father, and his father, and his father before him?"
His sweet old grandmother took Dallas by the hand, looked into his eyes, and explained, "That's because your father, grandfather, and great-grandfather were born in January, and you were born in June, dear."
817. BETTER JUDGE
When the famous politician and orator William Jennings Bryan (1860-1925) was a young man, he went to the home of the father of his prospective wife to ask him for her hand in marriage. Bryan was determined to impress the father by quoting from the Bible, and he chose Proverbs 18:22: "He who finds a wife finds a good thing, And obtains favor from the LORD."
Bryan was unnerved when the father replied by quoting Paul: "So then he that giveth her in marriage doeth well; but he that giveth her not in marriage doeth better."
(1 Corinthians 7:38)
Bryan, never at a loss for words, said: "Yes, but Paul had no wife and Solomon had 700. Therefore, I believe Solomon ought to be the better judge as to marriage."

816. KIM'S HUSBAND
A family in our church was moving. The husband traveld a lot for business. His wife put his travel time to use by being a tirelss volunteer in our church. Before their departure to his new job assignment, the husband told me he was only known in the church as "Kim's husband" because she was so involved and he was gone so much.
He told me his wife, Kim, would be greatly missed, but expressed doubt anyone in the church would know he was gone. With his permission, I told his story during a sermon about significance a few weeks before their move. I repeated our conversation and began to emphasize his great worth to his family and our church. It started to get emotional. Suddenly a thought hit me and I said, "Now if somebody could point this guy out to me." The congregation went nuts.

338. THE EMERGENCY
To address an emergency call a doctor came to see a rich patient at his home, who was screaming with extreme stomach pain and was surrounded by many anxious relatives. The Doctor kicked all the relatives out of the room, closed the door with patient and he inside.
After a while he came out and asked, "Please give me a pair of scissors." People gave him stainless steel scissors.
He again went inside, closed the door and soon came back. He said, "Please give me a hammer." He got one.
A number of times he repeated the routine of going inside, closing the door and then coming back again for a new tool.
Finally he came outside one more time and asked, "Please give me a screw driver." The oldest son could not stand it any more and lost his patience. In a crying voice he pleaded, "Doctor please tell us what has happened to our dear Dad. Will he live? Could we open his will?"
The doctor said, "No, I don't know yet... I am still trying to open my stupid bag."

When we got married my wife told me I was one in a million. I found out she was right.

Oh, my wife loves vacations. The other night she told me, "I wanna go someplace I've never been before." I took her to a men's room.
Oh, when I was a kid I was poor. We were so poor, when my father died; they asked my mother, "Paper or plastic?"
You wanna have laughs? Do what I do.
When I go through a tollbooth, I keep going. I tell the guy, "The car behind me is paying for two."

BIBLE TRIVIA (About The Bible)
NUTS AND BOLTSTHE WORD TRANSLATED AS 'BOOK'.....
..... in the Bible is really the word for 'scroll'. Originally, the words of Scripture were written on pieces of parchment or papyrus, and glued together to form scrolls. It wasn't until the 2nd century AD, that the notion of pages was invented, when a 'codex' was created by gluing several flat sheets onto a wooden spine.

Christianity at risk of dying out in a generation, warns Lord Carey
Lord Carey, the former Archbishop of Canterbury, warns Christianity "a generation away from extinction" in BritainBy John Bingham, Religious Affairs Editor

Christianity is just a “generation away from extinction†in Britain unless churches make a dramatic breakthrough in attracting young people back to the faith, the former Archbishop of Canterbury Lord Carey has warned.
Clergy are now gripped by a “feeling of defeatâ€, congregations are worn down by “heaviness†while the public simply greets both with “rolled eyes and a yawn of boredomâ€, he said.
His comments at a Christian conference came as a stark report laid before the Church of England’s General Synod warned that its position as a “national institution†will be in doubt if numbers in the pews drop much further.
The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, also underlined the scale of the crisis telling members of the Synod they must “evangelise or fossiliseâ€.
In an impassioned plea for Church to adopt a new missionary stance, he told them that their constant internal debates were like no more than “rearranging furniture when the house is on fireâ€.
He called for an ambitious campaign aimed at the “re-evangelisation of Englandâ€, on a par with the ministry of the northern saints such as Cuthbert, Hilda and Aidan who spread Christianity in Anglo-Saxon times.
The Synod responded by voting to set up a committee.
Lord Carey's warning came as he addressed the Shropshire Light Conference at Holy Trinity Church in Shrewsbury at the weekend discussing how the church could be “re-imaginedâ€.
The former Archbishop said while the church is doing much important work, it faces an existential challenge.
“In many parts of Britain churches are struggling, some priests are diffident and lack confidence; a feeling of defeat is around.
“The burden seems heavy and joy in ministry has been replaced by a feeling of heaviness.â€
He said that the reaction from the public was not so much hostile as dismissive.
“The viewpoint could be expressed in a variety of non -verbal ways: the shrug of indifference, the rolled eyes of embarrassment, the yawn of boredom.
“So many people do not see the average church as a place where great things happen. “To sit in a cold church looking at the back of other peoples’ heads is surely not the best place to meet exciting people and to hear prophetic words.â€
He added: “It is still the case that people are essentially looking for spiritual fulfilment.
"One of the most worrying, most urgent groups we need to invest in is young people.
"We ought to be ashamed of ourselves.â€
He warned against relying on “more gimmicks†to revive the Church’s fortunes adding: “The most urgent and worrying gap is in young peoples work.
“So many churches have no ministry to young people and that means they have no interest in the future.
“As I have repeated many times in the past we are one generation away from extinction.
“We have to give cogent reasons to young people why the Christian faith is relevant to them.â€
His comments came as a report was laid before the Church England’s General Synod warning that plunging congregations now threaten its ability to “sustain a nationwide presenceâ€.
Typical Sunday congregations have almost halved since 1970 to just 807,000 in the most recent figures.
Archbishop Sentamu told the Synod: “Compared with evangelism everything else is like rearranging furniture when the house is on fire.
“Tragically too often that is what we are doing – reorganising the structures, arguing over words and phrases, while the people of England are left floundering amid meaningless anxiety and despair.â€

Of course, real life has returned after the excitement ad relaxation of our cruise. Don't want to bore you with more stories of our travels, but will include just one more picture, as a picture tells a 1000 words.We are now preparing for a new retail venture which the Lord has unexpectedly led us in to! More later.
Try not to get too stressed in the lead up to Christmas! We all say this every year and generally ignore our own advice!
