A REVELATION TO CHANGE YOUR LIFE!

THE TRUE ARMOUR OF GOD - Part 6

MEANING FOR OUR LIFE TODAY

When asking the Lord about what to write, He firstly brings back to mind the story of David and Goliath that we considered earlier, but looking at it in a different way.

So many Christians and churches today, desire to conform to the pattern of Goliath. We will be strong! Put on our soldier's armour! Yell out to the devil that he is a defeated foe! Dare to attack me and you will die! I will hound you until I reach you and cut you to pieces with my sword! Satan, you are a defeated foe! Here it is.....

23 As he was talking with them, Goliath, the Philistine champion from Gath, stepped out from his lines and shouted his usual defiance, and David heard it. 24 Whenever the Israelites saw the man, they all fled from him in great fear. (1 Samuel 17:23)

43 He said to David, ‘Am I a dog, that you come at me with sticks?’ And the Philistine cursed David by his gods. 44 ‘Come here,’ he said, ‘and I’ll give your flesh to the birds and the wild animals!’ (1 Samuel 17:43)

Satan laughs! Bring it on you foolish Christian! Clothing yourself in worldly armour, will never defeat me! For I know every chink in your armour! You will die, as surely as Goliath did!

Have you, have we, defeated satan? No, no and no!

THE HUMAN WAY OF ATTACKING SATAN WAS (AND IS) AN OFFENSIVE ACTION

On the other hand, David on this day, didn't abuse his brothers and others, when they criticized him.....

28 When Eliab, David’s eldest brother, heard him speaking with the men, he burned with anger at him and asked, ‘Why have you come down here? And with whom did you leave those few sheep in the wilderness? I know how conceited you are and how wicked your heart is; you came down only to watch the battle.’ 29 ‘Now what have I done?’ said David. ‘Can’t I even speak?’ 30 He then turned away to someone else and brought up the same matter, and the men answered him as before.(1 Samuel 17:28-9)

After trying and rejecting Saul's tunic and armour (a picture of worldly strength), he wore his own (likely white) shepherds tunic as a picture of the bride of Christ.....

Let us rejoice and be glad and give him glory! For the wedding of the Lamb has come, and his bride has made herself ready. 8 Fine linen, bright and clean, was given her to wear.’ (Fine linen stands for the righteous acts of God’s holy people.) (Revelation 19:7-8)

David fought Goliath because Goliath attacked him.....

48 As the Philistine moved closer to attack him, David ran quickly towards the battle line to meet him. (1 Samuel 17:48)

David did not come with worldly weapons, but 5 simple, common stones and a shepherds sling. Completely inadequate, to tackle Goliath. But is wasn't.....

45 David said to the Philistine, ‘You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. 46 This day the Lord will deliver you into my hands, and I’ll strike you down and cut off your head. This very day I will give the carcasses of the Philistine army to the birds and the wild animals, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel. 47 All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the Lord saves; for the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give all of you into our hands.’ 48 As the Philistine moved closer to attack him, David ran quickly towards the battle line to meet him. 49 Reaching into his bag and taking out a stone, he slung it and struck the Philistine on the forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell face down on the ground. (1 Samuel 17:45 -49)

DAVID'S (THE SPIRITUAL) ACTION IN ATTACKING SATAN WAS (AND IS) A DEFENSIVE ACTION.

Many Christians believe that the devil is continually attacking them. Actually, there is only one of him and he can only be in one place at a time. Always at your place? No, I am sure. His demons can, and do, attack us at times, but much of our ungodly behaviour is simply through our own, non-sanctified actions.

So we need to prepare ourselves to defeat satan, his demons, and our own ungodly character, all at the same time!

But how?

Yes, their is a way, but we will have to wait until next week to find out!

FROM THE WORD

THE WORDS OF JESUS

May we hear what the Lord is saying to us.

Jesus Warns the Disciples to be Prepared (Luke 22:35-8)
For His death.

“When I sent you out without money, without a bag, and without an extra pair of sandals, did you lack anything?”
But now, if you have money you should take it, as well as a bag, and if you don’t have a sword, sell your
cloak and buy one. I tell you that this statement in Scripture about me must be fulfilled: ‘He was counted with the wicked.’ What was said about me is now being fulfilled.

Jesus Comforts the Disciples (John:14:1-31)
In general.

“Don’t let your minds be anxious. Trust in God, trust in me as well. In my Father’s house there are many
rooms. If this wasn’t so I would have told you. I’m going to prepare a place for you. Once I’ve gone and
prepared a place for you, I will come again and take you with me, so that you can be there with me too. You know the way to where I’m going.”

To Thomas.

“I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you had known me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and you have seen him.”

To Philip

“Have I been with you such a long time, Philip, and yet you still don’t know me? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Don’t you believe that I live in the Father and the Father lives in me? The words I speak are not mine; it’s the Father living in me who is doing his work. Believe me when I tell you that I live in the Father, and the Father lives in me, or at least believe because of the evidence of all that I’ve done.
“I tell you the truth, anyone who trusts in me will do the same things I am doing. In fact they will do even greater things because I am going to the Father. I’ll do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified through the Son. Whatever you ask for in my name, I will do it.
If you love me, you will keep my commands. I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Comforter, the Spirit of truth, who will always be with you. The world cannot accept him because it isn’t looking for him and does not know him. But you know him because he lives with you and will be in you.
“I will not abandon you like orphans: I will come back to you. Soon the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you will live too. On that day you will know that I live in the Father, you live in me, and I live in you. Those who keep my commands are the ones who love me, those who love me will be loved by my Father. I will love them too, and will reveal myself to them.”

To Judas (not Iscariot)

“Those who love me will do as I say. My Father will love them, and we will come and make our home with them. Those who don’t love me don’t do what I say. These words don’t come from me, they come from the Father who sent me.
“I’m explaining this to you while I’m still here with you. But when the Father sends the Comforter, the Holy Spirit, in my place, he will teach you everything and remind you of all that I told you.
“Peace I leave you; my peace I’m giving you. The peace I give you is nothing like what the world gives.
Don’t let your minds be anxious, and don’t be afraid.
“You’ve heard me tell you, ‘I am going away, but I will come back to you.’ If you really loved me, you would be happy because I’m going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. I’ve explained this to you now before it happens so that when it does happen you will be convinced. I can’t talk to you much longer, for the prince of this world is coming. He has no power to control me, but I’m doing what my Father told me to do so that the world will know that I love the Father.
Now get up. Let’s go.”

DAVID'S DOODLINGS

THE CROSS AND THE BLOOD

725. Jesus freely gave His life for us on the Cross. He invites us to freely give our lives back to Him in return.

726. New Zealand has 4 million people and 40 million sheep. Yet, if it weren't for the Cross of Jesus, our sheep numbers would still be insufficient to pay the ongoing cost of sin. For this, the sheep are most grateful to Him!

727. Most people dislike the sight of blood more than that of sin. But sin is so ugly that Jesus shed all His blood to cover it!

728. Blood represents life - both natural and spiritual. Give me more of the blood!

729. Without blood, there is no life. Without sacrifice, there is no blood. A sacrificial life is bathed in the blood of Jesus.

730. The Cross cost Jesus His all. How much of our all are we prepared to give back to Him?

732. Colours in God's sight! Blood is red. Sin is black. White is purity. Red over black is white.

733. Jesus' Blood is the stain remover of life.

734. Man's blood spilled, is to be feared. Jesus' blood spilled, to be revered.

735. The Days of Grace in which we now live have not reduced the awe-fullness of the Cross, but oftentimes have hidden its bloodiness beneath the shroud of love.

736. It's relatively easy to spill our blood as a martyr. Yet, it's extremely hard to submit ourselves to the ongoing blood transforming transfusions necessary for His life to live within us.

737. Blood is life. Sin is death. Help me to love your blood more and more each day, Lord.

738. Human blood grows, flows and goes. But Jesus' blood never ends.

333. MAKE OVER
A middle aged woman has a heart attack and is taken to the hospital. While on the operating table she has a near death experience. During that experience she sees God and asks if this is it. God says no, and explains that she has another 30-40 years to live.
Upon her recovery she decides to just stay in the hospital and have a face lift, liposuction, breast augmentation, tummy tuck, etc. She even has someone come in and change her hair color. She figures since she's got another 30 or 40 years she might as well make the most of it.

She walks out the hospital after the last operation and is killed by an ambulance speeding up to the hospital. She arrives in front of God and asks, "I thought you said I had another 30-40 years?"

God replies, "I didn't recognize you."

FACTS FOR FUN

LAST WEEKS QUESTION: Do penguins live at the North Pole?

ANSWER: Afraid not. All penguins live in the Southern Hemisphere. The Galapagos penguin is the only penguin that sometimes may stray slightly north of the equator. You'll find them all in the Antarctic, but not the Arctic. (Easier to swim down than up?)

THIS WEEK'S QUESTION: Does your skin shrink in water?

SOME FUN FACTS

406. TOO VIVID
From 1941 until 1950, violet was part of the colour mixture for ‘M&M's’ Plain Chocolate Candies. Violet was then replaced by tan. (Roses are red, violets are blue, M&M’s are tan, just for you!)

407. SPLITTING HAIRS
It is possible to drown and not die. Technically the term ‘drowning’ refers to the process of taking water into the lungs, not to the death caused by that process. (Could it happen every day to those who ‘drown their sorrows’?)

408. SQUEEKY CLEAN
Floor cleaning products in Venezuela have ten times the pine fragrance of U.S. floor cleaners, as Venezuelan women won't buy a weaker fragrance. These fastidious homemakers may well wet-mop their tile floors twice a day, leaving windows and doors open so the scent can waft out to the street, so ‘scenting ‘ out the message that their houses are clean. (One ‘mopmanship’!)

Missionary died thinking he was a failure; 84 years later thriving churches found hidden in the jungle

May 19, 2014
By Mark Ellis

In 1912, medical missionary Dr. William Leslie went to live and minister to tribal people in a remote corner of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. After 17 years he returned to the U.S. a discouraged man – believing he failed to make an impact for Christ. He died nine years after his return.

But in 2010, a team led by Eric Ramsey with Tom Cox World Ministries made a shocking and sensational discovery. They found a network of reproducing churches hidden like glittering diamonds in the dense jungle across the Kwilu River from Vanga, where Dr. Leslie was stationed.

With the help of a Mission Aviation Fellowship pilot, Ramsey and his team flew east from Kinshasa to Vanga, a two and a half hour flight in a Cessna Caravan. After they reached Vanga, they hiked a mile to the Kwilu River and used dugout canoes to cross the half-mile-wide expanse. Then they hiked with backpacks another 10 miles into the jungle before they reached the first village of the Yansi people.

Based on his previous research, Ramsey thought the Yansi in this remote area might have some exposure to the name of Jesus, but no real understanding of who He is. They were unprepared for their remarkable find.

“When we got in there, we found a network of reproducing churches throughout the jungle,” Ramsey reports. “Each village had its own gospel choir, although they wouldn’t call it that,” he notes. “They wrote their own songs and would have sing-offs from village to village.”

They found a church in each of the eight villages they visited scattered across 34 miles. Ramsey and his team even found a 1000-seat stone “cathedral” in one of the villages. He learned that this church got so crowded in the 1980s – with many walking miles to attend — that a church planting movement began in the surrounding villages.

“There is no Bible in the Yansi language,” Ramsey says. “They used a French Bible, so those who taught had to be fluent in French.”

Apparently, Dr. Leslie crossed the Kwilu River once a year from Vanga and spent a month traveling through the jungle, carried by servants in a sedan chair.

“He would teach the Bible, taught the tribal children how to read and write, talked about the importance of education, and told Bible stories,” Ramsey notes. Dr. Leslie started the first organized educational system in these villages, Ramsey learned.

It took some digging for Ramsey to uncover Leslie’s identity. “The tribal people only knew him by one name and I didn’t know if that was a first or last name. They knew he was a Baptist and he was based in that one city and they knew the years.”

When Ramsey returned home he did some additional investigation and discovered Dr. Leslie was affiliated with the American Baptist Missionary Union. The American Baptist Missionary Union was founded in 1814 by Adoniram Judson, who led a pioneering work in Burma.

Born in Ontario, Canada, William H. Leslie followed his intended profession as a pharmacist until his conversion in 1888. He moved to the Chicago area, where God began to grip his heart with the desire to become a medical missionary.

Dr. Leslie initiated his Congo service in 1893 at Banza-Manteke. Two years later he developed a serious illness. A young missionary named Clara Hill took care of him until he recovered. Their budding friendship ripened into love and a marriage proposal. They were wed in 1896.

In 1905 William and Clara pioneered a work in Cuilo, Anglola, where they overcame a hurricane that struck the night before one of their children was born, and more mundane obstacles like charging buffaloes and armies of ants.

Seven years later they cleared enough of the leopard-infested jungle along the Kwilu River at Vanga for a new mission station perched on a small plateau. Some of the villages surrounding Vanga were still practicing cannibalism at that time.

They spent 17 years at Vanga, but their service ended on a rocky note. “Dr. Leslie had a relational falling out with some of the tribal leaders and was asked not to come back,” Ramsey says. “They reconciled later; there were apologies and forgiveness, but it didn’t end like he hoped.”

“His goal was to spread Christianity. He felt like he was there for 17 years and he never really made a big impact, but the legacy he left is huge.”

WAXING LYRICAL

Before Adam and Eve sinned, there was no need for time, for they had eternity. The tyranny of time is one of the costs of man's fall.

A MATTER OF TIME

Isn’t time such a wonderful thing,
Seems as long as a piece of string.
Not knowing where it begins, or is likely to end,
With so much of it, you can give some to a friend.

In the bright sparkle of youth,
It’s never ending, ’tis the truth!
So much to do, but with all the time in the world,
No hurry to use it! In bed we lie, snugly curled.

Then comes along the responsibilities of life,
Now it’s time to settle down with the wife.
Still the time ahead, it seems so great,
To be lovingly shared, now with a mate.

But soon comes along the patter of little feet,
And suddenly, time is no longer in surfeit!
For now there just are too few hours in the day,
To do all your work, no longer time to play.

The family grows up,
With a cat and a pup.
Then all of a sudden they are leaving home,
For now it’s their turn, the world to roam.

Where did all the years dash?
Disappeared now in a flash!
Yes, time it truly does you con,
Once so much, now all gone.

Then it’s time to do all the things we desire,
As time passes, from our work we may now retire.
But while the mind is willing, the body’s now weak,
For old man time, havoc on our person does wreak.

So the moral of the story, both for woman and man,
Is to use every minute in the best way we can.
For all too soon, time comes to an end,
Then to heaven or hell, it does us send.

A DAVID MUSING

On Wednesday, I received my beautifully repaired and restored computer back from 'Dr' David Harris, my computer guru. I hardly recognized it - so sparkly clean! And operating well too, with an upgraded operating system to boot. (get the pun?)

My own operating system has sped up too, now that my own machine is back in operation!

In life, if we neglect the Word, computerized or not, our spiritual efficiency, understanding and effectiveness will fail also. For the Bible is one machine that the more it is used the better its user grows in God - provided we are absorbing and obeying what it tells us to do, not just reading it as a novel.

Worth thinking about? Worth doing!

So until next week.....

MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOU BLESS GOD

His servant and yours
