WHO WILL DARE TO BE A DISCIPLE? (Part 14)

THE KINGDOM PARABLES - THE WAY OF DISCIPLESHIP - continued

Over the past 4 week we have looked at, in the kingdom parables of Matthew 13.....

1. The Parable of the Sower
2. The Parable of the Weeds
3. The Parables of the Mustard Seed and the Yeast
4. The Parables of the Hidden Treasure and the Pearl and The Parable of the Net

The most interesting parts of the chapter follow on from the parables mentioned above. Firstly, another, 'mini parable', in explanation to the disciples.....

51 ‘Have you understood all these things?’ Jesus asked. ‘Yes,’ they replied.
52 He said to them, ‘Therefore every teacher of the law who has become a disciple in the kingdom of heaven is like the owner of a house who brings out of his storeroom new treasures as well as old.’ (Matthew 13:51-2)

Most of us prefer to hang on to the old rather than accept the new. Jesus does not want us to throw away that of the old that is good, but the new and the old must be separated.....

Neither do people pour new wine into old wineskins. If they do, the skins will burst; the wine will run out, and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved.’ (Matthew 9:17)

So, as disciples of the kingdom, we are to keep the good from the old wine we have received in the past, (not all the old wine is good. It can go vinegary!), so we need discernment.

But we are to display in our lives also the new wine of discipleship, living the gospel of the kingdom.

The final section of Matthew 13, will be a practical problem many, indeed most, disciples will face. Those who aren't following the discipleship path will misunderstand you. Jesus too had this problem.....

A prophet without honour

53 When Jesus had finished these parables, he moved on from there. 54 Coming to his home town, he began teaching the people in their synagogue, and they were amazed. ‘Where did this man get this wisdom and these miraculous powers?’ they asked. 55 ‘Isn’t this the carpenter’s son? Isn’t his mother’s name Mary, and aren’t his brothers James, Joseph, Simon and Judas? 56 Aren’t all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all these things?’ 57 And they took offence at him. But Jesus said to them, ‘A prophet is not without honour except in his own town and in his own home.’ 58 And he did not do many miracles there because of their lack of faith. (Matthew 13:53-58)

The change in our life when we apply the revelation of discipleship to our lives means that others, less committed, will try and find our deficiencies in order to justify their non -acceptance of the kingdom lifestyle! Some will bring up our past. Others will criticize our present life.

We must walk in humility, not superiority, for that is the way of Jesus.....

Imitating Christ’s humility

2 Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, 2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. 3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. (Philippians 2:1-4)

And from the ever 'practical disciple' James.....

[ Two kinds of wisdom ] Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. (James 3:13)

AMEN

Will you dare to be a disciple? I will.

(Continued next week)

FROM THE WORD

THE WORDS OF JESUS

May we hear what the Lord is saying to us.

Life Through the Son of God (John 5:16-30)
Jesus criticized for healing on the Sabbath and claiming to be God’s son.

“My Father is still working, and so am I.”
“I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can only do what he sees the Father doing. Whatever the Father does the Son does as well. For the Father loves the Son, and reveals to him everything he does; and the Father will show to him even more incredible things that will completely amaze you. For just as the Father gives life to those he resurrects from the dead, in the same way the Son also gives life to those that he wants. The Father judges no one. He has given to the Son all the authority to judge, so that everyone may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Anyone who doesn’t honor the Son doesn’t honor the Father who sent him. I tell you the truth: those who follow what I say and trust the One who sent me have eternal life. They won’t be condemned, but have gone from death to life. “I tell you the truth: The time is coming—in fact it’s here already—when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live! Just as the Father has life-giving power in himself, so has he given the Son the same life-giving power in himself. The Father also granted the authority for judgment to him, for he is the Son of man. Don’t be surprised at this, for the time is coming when all those in the grave will hear his voice and will rise again: those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of condemnation. I can do nothing by myself. I judge based on what I’m told, and my decision is right, for I’m not doing my own will but the will of the One who sent me.

Testimonies of Jesus (John 5:31-47)

If I were to make claims about myself, such claims wouldn’t be valid; but someone else gives evidence about me, and I know what he says about me is true. You asked John about me, and he told the truth, but I don’t need any human endorsement. I’m explaining this to you so you can be saved. John was like a brightly-burning light, and you were willing to enjoy his light for a while. But the evidence I’m giving is greater than John’s. For I am doing the work that the Father gave me to do, and this is the proof that the Father sent me. The Father who sent me, he himself speaks on my behalf. You’ve never heard his voice, and you’ve never seen what he looks like, and you don’t accept what he says, because you don’t trust in the one he sent.
“You search the Scriptures because you think that through them you’ll gain eternal life. But the evidence they give is in support of me! And yet you don’t want to come to me so that you might live. I’m not looking for human approval —I know you, and that you don’t have God’s love in you. For I’ve come to represent my Father, and you won’t accept me; but if someone comes representing themselves, then you accept them! How can you trust in me when you look for praise from one another and yet you don’t look for praise from the one true God? But don’t think I will be making accusations about you to the Father. It’s Moses who is accusing you, the one in whom you place such confidence. For if you really trusted Moses you would trust in me, because he wrote about me. But since you don’t trust what he said, why would you trust what I say?”

DAVID'S DOODLINGS

PRAYER

961. Share God's heart. Pray for others!

962. The most powerful prayers are the Word of God.

963. The least liked people are those who talk about no-one but themselves. Why do we do this with God?

964. Prayer is a two way communication process. we must listen to God too!

965. Listening in silence is the best way to hear from God.

966. In prayer, silence often speaks louder than words.

967. We expect friends to take an interest in us. Shouldn't we too, be interested in hearing from God when we pray?

968. God is with it! He too has moved on from King James English!

969. In prayer, ten words from the heart are worth more than a thousand parroted from a page.

970. Prayer is not about 'I' but about 'hIm'.

LAUGHING AT OURSELVES

***Blessed are those who can laugh at themselves for they shall never cease to be amused***

*** Those who can't laugh at themselves leave the job to others. ***

390. EXPLAINING GOD
A teacher gave her third grade class an assignment to write essays on the topic, "Explain God." The following was turned in by one of her 8-year-old students...

One of God's main jobs is making people. He makes them to replace the ones that die so there will be enough people to take care of things on earth.

He doesn't make grown-ups, just babies. I think because they are smaller and easier to make. That way, He doesn't have to take up His valuable time teaching them to talk and walk. He can just leave that to Moms and Dads.

God's second most important job is listening to prayers. An awful lot of this goes on, since some people, like preachers and things, pray at times besides bedtime and meals. God doesn't have time to listen to the radio or watch TV because of this.

Because God hears everything there must be a terrible lot of noise in His ears, unless He has thought of a way to turn it off.

God sees everything and hears everything and is everywhere which keeps Him pretty busy, so you shouldn't go wasting His time by going over your Mom and Dad's head asking for something they said you couldn't have.

Atheists are people who don't believe in God. I don't think there are any in Chula Vista. At least there aren't any who come to our church.

Jesus is God's Son. He used to do all the hard work like walking on water and doing miracles and trying to teach the people who didn't want to learn about God. They finally got tired of Him preaching to them and they crucified Him.

Jesus was good and kind like His Father and He told His Father that they didn't know what they were doing and to forgive them and God said OKAY.

Jesus' Dad (God) appreciated everything that He had done and all His hard work on earth so He told Him He didn't have to go out on the road anymore, He could stay in heaven. So He did. Now Jesus helps His Dad out by listening to prayers and seeing things which are important for God to take care of and which ones He can take care of Himself without having to bother God. Like a secretary only more important.

You can pray anytime you want and they are sure to hear you because they got it worked out so one of them is on duty all the time.

You should always go to church on Sunday because it makes God happy, and if there's anybody you want to make happy, it's God. Don't skip church to do something you think will be more fun like going to the beach. This is wrong! And, besides, the sun doesn't come out at the beach until noon anyway.

If you don't believe in God, besides being an atheist, you will be very lonely, because your parents can't go everywhere with you, like to camp, but God can. It is good to know He's around you when you're scared in the dark or when you can't swim very good and get thrown into real deep water by big kids.

But you shouldn't just always think of what God can do for you. I figure God put me here and He can take me back anytime He pleases.

And that's why I believe in God.

389. GARDENING GOD'S WAY
Plant three rows of peas:
 Peace of mind
 Peace of heart
 Peace of soul
Plant four rows of squash:
 Squash gossip
 Squash indifference
 Squash grumbling
 Squash selfishness
Plant four rows of lettuce:
 Lettuce be faithful
 Lettuce be kind
 Lettuce be obedient
 Lettuce really love one another
No garden without turnips:
 Turnip for meetings
 Turnip for service
 Turnip to help one another
To conclude our garden we must have thyme:
 Thyme for God
 Thyme for study
 Thyme for prayer

Water freely with patience and cultivate with love.

There will be much fruit in your garden because you reap what you sow.

FACTS FOR FUN

LAST WEEKS QUESTION: Where and when was the first underground train line opened?

ANSWER: The City and South London Railway opened the world's first deep-level electric railway on December 18th, 1890, running from King William Street in the City of London under the River Thames to Stockwell. (Does the underground ever run overground?)

THIS WEEK'S QUESTION: Is it true that turtles don't age?

SOME FUN FACTS

330. AT PEACE
The African bushman who lives in a quiet, remote environment, has no measurable hearing loss at age 60. (‘Rock’ is to be looked at, not listened to!)

331. BUILT BIGGER
London's Millennium Dome, the largest of its kind in the world, was over one kilometre (.6 mile) in circumference and covers over 80,000 square meters. (Evoking memories of the days of British ‘dome-inion’ over the earth)

332. WELL TRAVELLED
A drop of water may travel thousands of miles between the time it evaporates into the atmosphere and again falls to the Earth as rain, sleet, or snow. (When does a drop become a drip?)

THOUGHTS FOR THINKERS

1. Faith is the ability to not panic.

2. If you are worried, you didn't pray. If you prayed, don't worry.

3. As a child of God, prayer is like calling home every day.

4. Blessed are the flexible for they shall not be bent out of shape.

5. When we get tangled up in our problems, be still. God wants us to be still so He can untangle the knot.

6. Do the maths. Count your blessings.

7. God wants spiritual fruit not religious nuts.

JUST JOKES

188. NOT MOVING
A woman surgeon was disturbed about the high cost of her car repair.

"This is ridiculous!" she said, "charging me five hundred dollars to grind the valves and put in new piston rings."

"Not really, just think about it. You are a surgeon and should know that an automobile engine is just as complicated as a human body. The mechanic who serviced your car is just as skilled as you are."

"Is that so? Well, let me see him grind valves while the engine is running."

187. THE PHONE CALL
When Vickie's co-worker received a phone call from her daughter, she heard her exclaim joyfully, "Seven and a half pounds! I'm so proud!"

After she had hung up, she asked, "Boy or girl?"

"Neither," her colleague replied... "Diet."

186. HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE
When a physician remarked on a new patient's extraordinarily ruddy complexion, the patient replied, "High blood pressure, Doc. It comes from my family."

"Your mother's side or your father's?" The Doctor asked.

"Neither," he replied. "It's from my wife's family."

"Oh, come now," the Doctor said. "How could your wife's family give you high blood pressure?"

He sighed. "You oughta meet 'em sometime, Doc!"

185. WHAT IS WATER
"Sally, can you spell "water" for me?" The teacher asked.

H I J K L M N 0 answered Sally promptly.

Her teacher look puzzled. "That doesn't spell "water.'"

"Sure it does," said Sally. "It's all the letters from H to O."

184. YESTERDAY
A resident in a posh hotel breakfast room called over the head waiter one morning and said with a wonderful and cheerful smile.

"Good Morning sir. What a wonderful morning I'd like two boiled eggs, one of them so under cooked it's runny, and the other so over cooked it's tough and hard to eat. Also, grilled bacon that has been left out so it gets a bit on the cold side; burnt toast that crumbles away as soon as you touch it with a knife; butter straight from the deep freeze so that it's impossible to spread; and a pot of very weak coffee, lukewarm."

"That's a complicated order sir," said the bewildered waiter. "It might be quite difficult."

The guest replied, "Oh? I don't understand -- that's what I got yesterday!"

Relax and have some fun.....

Tibet: 62 Buddhist monks decide to follow Jesus

Something wonderful is happening in Tibet. Last year, one Tibetan Buddhist priest embraced Jesus Christ and became a Christian pastor. He converted after seeing the love of Christ shown by a group of Christian workers who helped out and provided relief goods to the people of the region when a major earthquake struck the area.

Now, the seed of Christian love has grown. In an update, Asian Access reports that 62 other Buddhist monks have decided to follow the footsteps of the former lama and are now following Christ as well. As a result of the labours of this new Christian community, thousands of others Tibetans followed.

What is causing this avalanche of Christian conversions? Director Joe Handley of Asian Access says it is mainly due to Christian workers who provided hope and healing to the people of Tibet in the aftermath of last year's devastating earthquake. "They haven't seen Buddhists, Hindus, or other religious groups helping in the midst of the rubble. Rather, week after week, it is the followers of Jesus who have proved the test of time, sacrificed their own lives to serve and been the hands and feet of Jesus.”

The new converts have been discipled immediately. "We invest deeply, building their capacity so they can reach their communities,” Hanley says. "God does amazing things when you invest in people and see them grow deeper in Him, grow stronger as leaders, learn how to reproduce other leaders, and then it spreads through church planting efforts in ways that are simply remarkable.”

A REVELATION OF……. THE AMAZING TABERNACLE OF MOSES

A PICTURE OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF OUR LIVES AND OF THE CHURCH

The first modern revelation of the importance of Moses Tabernacle as being the pattern of a godly walk, and one of church development and life, came out of the Latter Rain Movement, after World War 2.

In more recent times the teaching has been neglected, but it is still applicable today. And the Lord is today, giving even more revelation about it, as we move still closer to the end of the age.

Yes, an understanding of Moses Tabernacle is vital for every Christian with a heart to know God and His plans in a deeper way.

I pray that you will find it as illuminating, challenging, yet encouraging, as I have in my life.

WAXING LYRICAL

One of the greatest misunderstandings of man over the two millennia since Christ has been that you can earn your passage into heaven through being a good person – that is by works alone. The message of Jesus however was that the only way into heaven was through belief in Him – called faith. Perhaps why this poem was given to me.

A GOOD MAN GOES TO HEAVEN?

I met a man, a very good man,
He looked after his family well.
And his son was his greatest fan,
He had no fear of going to hell.
For surely, a good man goes to heaven?

He went to church at Christmas and Easter
And was most generous with donations,
While the pastors words could not be clearer
He’d sit there, in control of his emotions.
For surely, a good man goes to heaven?

He was active in the community,
A man of standing - a Rotarian indeed.
Helping others at every opportunity,
The pillar of hope to those in need.
For surely, a good man goes to heaven?

He had a dear friend, a Muslim brother,
Six times a day facing Mecca he’d pray.
To the God of Abraham, indeed no other,
Of course, he too had found another way.
For surely, a good man goes to heaven?

Or the man in the jungle, he hadn’t been taught,
He would never have heard of the Jesus word!
Living a good life, doing as he ought,
In no way could he be for the sword!
For surely, a good man goes to heaven?

This Jesus man, he was a great guy,
The best role model of all to follow.
Crucified, now living up there in the sky,
But the only way – that rings too hollow.
For surely, a good man goes to heaven?

The man I met, he suddenly died
His funeral was very well attended.
A pillar of the community the family cried,
Their grief so great, for a life sadly ended.
But surely, a good man goes to heaven?

He took the path to the heavenly gate,
Full of confidence, had nothing to fear,
More than willing to meet his fate,
His ears so eagerly waiting to hear.
For surely, a good man goes to heaven?

Jesus was waiting there; he’s on the way in!
Then seeing God’s face, hope turned to pain,
What if the requirement was forgiveness of sin?
And repentance the key that brings with it gain.
"But surely God, a good man goes to heaven!"

Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth and the life.
No-one comes to the Father except through me."
These words cut through his soul like a knife,
They gutted him, oh how wrong could he be.
"But, I thought a good man goes to heaven!"

"I tell you the truth, I don’t know you", Jesus replied,
The lake of burning sulphur now eternally his fate.
Forever to burn, he cried, "To me the devil has always lied,
Don’t make my mistake – repent now before it’s too late!
For I’ve found out, a good man doesn’t go to heaven!"

I heard the man’s screams - not so far away,
As Satan ever tortures him with his sword.
My sins to Jesus readily confessed that day,
"Thank you my Jesus, please be my Lord."
Yes surely, a forgiven man goes to heaven!

Thanks to Julian Batchelor for the inspiration of his little black book,
"Why Good People Don’t Go To Heaven".

A DAVID MUSING

As you receive this ezine Kathy and I will be enjoying the delights of Singapore before going on to Nige and Savi's wedding in Bangalore! I hope you are not too jealous! LOL!

It is a long time since we have been there, but we will look forward to visiting some of the sights for which Singapore is famous e.g. the Orchid Gardens, as we are hosted by our good friends Kathleen and Ho. Kathleen, in particular, has spent a considerable time living with us here in Napier, New Zealand, so she knows us well!

Kathleen too, is a wonderful cook! No diets there! Her only request of us is that we bring with us a block of our beautiful, mature, 'Tasty NZ Cheddar' cheese.

If you haven't ever tried New Zealand cheese we would recommend you do, for they are (among) the best in the world. Our pasture fed cows produce beautiful, creamy milk, perfectly suited to fine cheese making. Besides, our dairy farmers need a boost, due to low worldwide milk prices over the past couple of years! Things do seem to be on the improve now as supply reduces.

May we all too, seek to mature in our walk with Jesus.

Until next week.......

MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOU BLESS GOD.

His servant and yours
