MUSINGS ON THE KINGDOM - PAST, FUTURE AND PRESENT
KINGDOM PRESENTHow do we enter the kingdom now?
How do we enter experientially, into the reality of the positional victory that Jesus attained for us on the cross?
This is the challenge of living the Christian life. Of holiness and righteousness. Of coming to maturity in Christ. Of becoming an overcomer. A part of the bride of Christ. Of living a kingdom lifestyle. Of being a participant in the building of the kingdom of God now. Yes, there are many expressions about, and many promises made in the Bible to, those who are prepared to go through the personal purification process necessary to live a Christ like life.
21 They preached the good news in that city and won a large number of disciples. Then they returned to Lystra, Iconium and Antioch, 22 strengthening the disciples and encouraging them to remain true to the faith. “We must go through many hardships to enter the kingdom of God,†they said. (Acts 14:21-2)
But how do we do it?
I don't have all the answers, for I have not reached this state yet (ask my wife Kathy!) but am learning some lessons as I pass down life's path.
My personality is one of an achiever. I give of myself pretty fully to what I am committed to, in many areas of my life.
When I finally became a follower of Jesus at age 42, I wanted to be the best I could be for Him. And I still do, even if my initial enthusiasm has been tempered by the ups and downs of my spiritual walk over the past 20 years.
Being a generally disciplined person, my first attempts to become more like Jesus were those of self improvement. While this was reasonably effective in many of the 'thou shalt not' areas of life, it did not take me long to realise that there was a lot more to becoming like Jesus than purely physical behaviours. Of course it is important that we live by the principles contained in the 10 Commandments etc., set out as a foundation for a righteous and holy life. However, as I soon discovered, these could easily and quickly become very legalistic and, as with the rules the Pharisees and religious leaders of Jesus time had devised, well away from the true truth that Jesus came to bring. A selection of verses follows;
13 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the kingdom of heaven in men’s faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor will you let those enter who are trying to..... 23 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices—mint, dill and cummin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law—justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former..... 27 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of dead men’s bones and everything unclean. 28 In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness. (Matthew 23:13,23,27-8)
It is obvious then from these words of Jesus, that simply keeping the outward law is insufficient to make us Christlike!
On a trip to Africa, I was asked to minister in a Holiness Church. This was a new experience for me. There were lots of rules and regulations, mainly as I soon found out, directed to the behaviour of the women in the congregation. eg. no makeup, no speaking in the service, etc. These people had a longing for holiness and righteousness, yet they had been sidetracked into trying to find it through rules and regulations.
Next week we will carry on with the end of the story, for it points the way to where we must really look if we desire true holiness in our lives.

FROM THE WORD
Seven Woes"Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples: “The teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. So you must obey them and do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach. They tie up heavy loads and put them on men’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them. “Everything they do is done for men to see: They make their phylacteries wide and the tassels on their garments long; they love the place of honor at banquets and the most important seats in the synagogues; they love to be greeted in the marketplaces and to have men call them ‘Rabbi.’ “But you are not to be called ‘Rabbi,’ for you have only one Master and you are all brothers. And do not call anyone on earth ‘father,’ for you have one Father, and he is in heaven. Nor are you to be called ‘teacher,’ for you have one Teacher, the Christ. The greatest among you will be your servant. For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted. “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the kingdom of heaven in men’s faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor will you let those enter who are trying to. “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel over land and sea to win a single convert, and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of hell as you are. “Woe to you, blind guides! You say, ‘If anyone swears by the temple, it means nothing; but if anyone swears by the gold of the temple, he is bound by his oath.’ You blind fools! Which is greater: the gold, or the temple that makes the gold sacred? You also say, ‘If anyone swears by the altar, it means nothing; but if anyone swears by the gift on it, he is bound by his oath.’ You blind men! Which is greater: the gift, or the altar that makes the gift sacred? Therefore, he who swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it. And he who swears by the temple swears by it and by the one who dwells in it. And he who swears by heaven swears by God’s throne and by the one who sits on it. “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices—mint, dill and cummin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law—justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former. You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel. “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean. “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of dead men’s bones and everything unclean. In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness. “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You build tombs for the prophets and decorate the graves of the righteous. And you say, ‘If we had lived in the days of our forefathers, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.’ So you testify against yourselves that you are the descendants of those who murdered the prophets. Fill up, then, the measure of the sin of your forefathers! “You snakes! You brood of vipers! How will you escape being condemned to hell? Therefore I am sending you prophets and wise men and teachers. Some of them you will kill and crucify; others you will flog in your synagogues and pursue from town to town. And so upon you will come all the righteous blood that has been shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah son of Berekiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar. I tell you the truth, all this will come upon this generation. “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing. Look, your house is left to you desolate. For I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’†(Matthew 23:1-39)

CRANWELL'S CARTOON
THE BEAST OUT OF THE EARTH11 Then I saw another beast, coming out of the earth. He had two
horns like a lamb, but he spoke like a dragon. 12 He exercised
all the authority of the first beast on his behalf, and made the
earth and its inhabitants worship the first beast, whose fatal
wound had been healed. 13 And he performed great and miraculous
signs, even causing fire to come down from heaven to earth in full
view of men. 14 Because of the signs he was given power to do on
behalf of the first beast, he deceived the inhabitants of the earth.
He ordered them to set up an image in honor of the beast who was
wounded by the sword and yet lived. 15 He was given power to give
breath to the image of the first beast, so that it could speak and
cause all who refused to worship the image to be killed. 16 He also
forced everyone, small and great, rich and poor, free and slave,
to receive a mark on his right hand or on his forehead, 17 so that
no one could buy or sell unless he had the mark, which is the name
of the beast or the number of his name. 18 This calls for wisdom. If
anyone has insight, let him calculate the number of the beast, for
it is man’s number. His number is 666. (Revelation 13:11-18)

131. FROM BAD TO WORSE
The minister was shaking everyone's hand while they were leaving the church.
An elderly man shook his hand and said, "Reverend, that was the worst sermon I've ever listened to. It was terrible."
As the minister stood there dumbfounded, the old man's wife stepped in, trying to help.
"Please don't pay any attention to him, pastor. He only repeats what he hears others say."
130. PRAYER NEEDED?
Little Johnny and his family were having Sunday dinner at his Grandmother's house. Everyone was seated around the table as the food was being served. When little Johnny received his plate, he started eating right away.
"Johnny, wait until we say our prayer," his mother reminded him.
"I don't have to," the little boy replied.
"Of course you do," his mother insisted, "we say a prayer before eating at our house."
"That's at our house," Johnny explained, "but this is Grandma's house and she knows how to cook!"

FACTS FOR FUN
LAST WEEKS QUESTION: What is the sleeping sickness?ANSWER: Sleeping sickness, or encephalitis lethargica, was a strange
disease that appeared in Europe suddenly in 1915. By 1918, the disease,
which took many forms, had spread throughout the world. In some cases,
victims fell into a coma and never woke up. Others died from days and
days of NOT being able to sleep at all. The epidemic, which is estimated
to have affected five million people, vanished mysteriously in 1927.
Survivors didn't fare well. The long-term effects of the sleeping sickness,
which had developed into a form of Parkinson's disease, had turned
many patients into motionless ‘statues’. In March 1969, neurologist Oliver
Sacks began to prescribe L-dopa, a drug used to treat Parkinson's
disease, to sleeping sickness patients. The effect was extraordinary.
Many began to ‘wake up’ and were suddenly, after decades of not
moving, able to walk and talk and think. Some patients believed they
were still in the 1920s! Sadly though, many patients on L-dopa began to
suffer from involuntary muscle movements, bizarre motions and notions,
and other serious symptoms. (Maybe we all would if we woke up 40
years in the future!)
THIS WEEK'S QUESTION: What is a group of flamingos called?
Answer Next Week.
292. MORE VICTIMS
'Soldiers disease’ is a term for morphine addiction. The Civil War in America produced over 400,000 morphine addicts. (Same result as a bullet, just slower.)
293. JOB CREATION
Unemployment was so high in England in 1634 that Charles I compelled the demolition of a newly erected mechanical sawmill because it threw so many sawyers out of work. (Many have tried it before and since with the same results. I’m sure there are mechanical sawmills in England today, aren’t there?)
294. JELLY BRAIN!
A bowl of lime Jell-O, when hooked up to an EEG machine, exhibited movement which is virtually identical to the brain waves of a healthy adult man or woman. (Put our brains in the limelight.)

58. SHOCKING!The Smith's were proud of their family tradition. Their ancestors had come to America on the Mayflower. They had included Senators and Wall Street wizards.
They decided to compile a family history, a legacy for their children and grandchildren. They hired a fine author. Only one problem arose - how to handle that great-uncle George, who was executed in the electric chair.
The author said he could handle the story tactfully.
The book appeared. It said "Great-uncle George occupied a chair of applied electronics at an important government institution, was attached to his position by the strongest of ties, and his death came as a great shock."
59. CINDERELLA ON THE ROOF
When my children received the video of Cinderella as a summer gift, they watched it almost nonstop for three days. Since it was warm outside, we kept the windows open.
Our neighbors were having their roof reshingled by three burly men. As I went out to get the mail one afternoon, I heard a roofer singing, "...put it together and what do you get?"
"From the other side of the house came a chorus of two more husky voices:
"Bibbidi bobbidi, bibbidi bobbidi, bibbidi, bobbidi boo!"
60. ON THE RUN
Our Air National guard unit conducted weapons-qualifying at the firing range. We had been issued our last round of ammo and were firing at the silhouettes, when a great gust of wind ripped the targets from their frames, and they fluttered away.
Firing stopped as we looked to the range officials.
"Keep shooting, Boys," a voice yelled. We've got 'em on the run now."

BIBLE TRIVIA (Old Testament Family Life)
UNDER THE PATRIARCHAL SYSTEM........... the father is in supreme command. The authority of the father extends to his wife, his children, his grandchildren, his servants and all his household. Many Bedouin Arabs today remain under no government other than this patriarchal rule. Abraham, Isaac and Jacob lived by this rule.

Former Dutch Health Minister Admits Error of Legalizing Euthanasia
by Patrick Craine, LifeSiteNews.comAMSTERDAM, NETHERLANDS - The former Dutch minister who successfully promoted the legalization of euthanasia has now admitted that the government's move was a mistake, and says that they should have first focused on palliative care.
Elsa Borst, who served as Health Minister for the Netherlands from 1994 to 2002, proposed the country's infamous euthanasia bill. When it passed in 2001, the Netherlands became the first country in the world to legalize euthanasia. In 2008, Dutch doctors reported 2,331 cases of euthanasia, 400 cases of assisted suicide, and 550 deaths without request.
Borst drew criticism from some Christian political parties shortly after the passage of her bill for comments she made in an interview. Echoing the Christ's final words on the Cross, Borst exclaimed: "It is finished!"
Now, however, she thinks the government acted too soon, as she told Dr. Anne-Mei The in interviews for the latter's new book on the history of euthanasia, entitled Verlossers naast God (Redeemer under God).
The legalization of euthanasia came "far too early," Borst said, admitting that the government did not give enough attention to palliative care and support for the dying. "In the Netherlands, we first listened to the political and societal demand in favour of euthanasia," she said. "Obviously, this was not in the proper order."
Alex Schadenberg, executive director of the Euthanasia Prevention Coalition, agrees with Borst that the Netherlands has been ineffective in providing proper palliative care. "Even today they still do not have effective palliative care in place in the Netherlands," he told LifeSiteNews.com (LSN).
"It's all good to say that," he said, referring to Borst's comments, "but what are they doing now to protect the vulnerable?"
"Now [euthanasia's] become socially accepted," he continued. "So how are you going to fix your mistake now, thank you? And how many thousands of people died because you didn't properly care for them? How many thousands killed?"
Dr. The, who has studied euthanasia for fifteen years, affirmed that the foreign perception of inadequate palliative care in the Netherlands is not unfounded. Further, she explained that in all her years, nearly all the doctors she has met struggle with euthanasia due to moral issues or emotional reactions.
Borst's regret over the situation in the Netherlands is particularly important given that that country has served as a model for euthanasia advocates in other countries. Schadenberg noted, for example, that Canadian MP Francine Lalonde, who currently has a bill before Parliament to legalize euthanasia and assisted suicide, has "imported" the Netherlands' approach into Canada.
As in the Netherlands, Schadenberg explained, Canada "lack[s] the proper care for those either a) at the end of life, or b) experiencing disability or chronic disabling conditions."
"Without the proper care in place, is [legalizing euthanasia] not the wrong thing to be doing?" he asked. "Really what the debate in Canada needs to be about is how we care for all Canadians."
Schadenberg went on to point out the "slippery slope" occurring in the Netherlands, which the country's politicians deny, he says, through "a systematic cover-up." "How can you say there is no slippery slope in the Netherlands - knowing that you now allow euthanasia for newborns, and you went from originally just the terminally ill, [and] now it's also for those who are mentally ill?" he asked. "You have allowed your definitions to wander so wide that you haven't even noticed it."
Borst's comments, Schadenberg says, are "simply telling us: do not make the same error as the Netherlands."

What does Christmas mean to you?CHRISTMAS TIME
Christmas time comes but once a year,
To be happy, you drink lots of beer!
Putting your gifts on the credit card,
Then come the repayments, oh so hard!
But Jesus came on Christmas Day,
Forever more to show the way,
How to enter into God's glorious presence.
In the ultimate of all Christmas presents!
So this Christmas, for some cheer,
Party less, put aside the beer,
And enter into the Holy Place,
To meet with God, face to face.

A DAVID MUSING
Our new Seekers shop in Gisborne opened last Thursday with a record day for any shop, anytime! Amazing! My thanks go to all the people whose hard work made this possible. One 'challenge' I had was trying to get a printer to install on a computer. I spent lots of time just doing what I normally do and then read again the instruction sheet. Nothing would work! After 3, 15 hour days, I just wanted to get into my car and drive the 3 hours to come back home! Was pretty tired, as you could imagine.
Not wanting to give up, as the printer was needed to print labels, in desperation I read the trouble shooting section of the main manual and found that there was an installation correction programme available to solve my problem. I applied it, and 'hey presto', it worked! And I was soon on my way!
How much like spiritual life this was! Like Moses, we do what we have always done! Then we may look to a summary, a teaching, a sermon, to overcome the problem we have. But finally, the real answer is found in the manual, the Bible, if only we will take the time to search it out!
A slow learner, I am! How about you?
Until next week.......
MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOU BLESS GOD.
His servant and yours
