WHEN THE POWER GOES OFF, THE POWER COMES ON!
Power supplies throughout Africa are notoriously unreliable - to say the least! So, many churches, organisations and wealthier people have generators as a substitute power source, one which they have to use all too frequently. However, the power I am talking about being generated during a power outage, is not from a generator, but that of the Holy Spirit!
Once again, for the third time during our trips to Africa, we have experienced a powerful visit of Holy Spirit anointing - when there has been either no electricity at all, or the power has gone off unexpectedly.
So the Lord is continuing to impress upon me that His presence is not dependant upon high powered sound systems and sophisticated instruments, but rather, the state of our hearts towards Him.
While 'excellence' in worship may be a laudable objective, it is no substitute for hearts truly in harmony with Him. For it is our worship, our adoration, He desires and which He acknowledges with His presence.
Fortunately for me, and maybe for you too, it is not my voice He seeks!

FROM THE WORD
GOD'S NAMEGod has many names, but the one that is most meaningful to me in describing Him is, "I AM" For it beautifully expresses His uniqueness, position and timelessness, amongst other things.
"Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what shall I tell them?†God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’†(Exodus 3:13-14)
“This is what the LORD says— Israel’s King and Redeemer, the LORD Almighty: I am the first and I am the last; apart from me there is no God." (Isaiah 44:6)
"Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." (Matthew 14:6)
" When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. Then he placed his right hand on me and said: “Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last. 18 I am the Living One; I was dead, and behold I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades." (Revelation 1:17-18)
DAVID’S DOODLINGS
HEAVENLY TRUTHS GOD HAS SHOWN ME (10 of 12)Unexpectedly given one afternoon when I wasn't feeling very well. How often God works like that! Kept my human input to a minimum.
God has shown me that...
... salvation is a process, not an event.
... life's limitations are man driven, not God given.
... when my wants line up with His desires, things happen.
... I need to place godliness even above wisdom.
... to be effective for Him, the light within, must shine without.

As I was taken to my hotel in Benin City, the day before my wife, Kathy, arrived, I glanced up to see the name of the local 'western style' Takeaway Store on the corner.I just about felll out of the car! For the name of the store was "KAYDEES". Now that may not mean much to you, but for Kathy and I, the name 'Kaydees' has been used as our business name in a number of companies, over nearly 30 years. It is the expanded version of our initials K & D, for Kathy and David, if you were wondering where it came from.
The logo they had used was so similar to ours, it was incredible.
So after Kathy arrived, I was able to take her to Kaydees to be served, as a small reward for all the years of service she has given to the various 'Kaydee' enterprises she had served in.
A truly 'about-turn' African experience!
LAUGHING AT OURSELVES
271. DO YOU LIVE HERE?
Father Delany was walking home after his sermon late one night when he came upon this intoxicated tramp on the sidewalk. Wanting to help, he asked the man, "Do you live here?"
"Yesh," the man slowly replied.
"Would you like me to help you upstairs?" the father asked.
"Yesh," the man slowly sputtered.
When they got up on the second floor he asked, "Is this your floor?"
"Yesh," again the man replied.
Then Father Delany got to thinking that maybe he didn't want to face the man's irate wife because she may think he was the one who got the man drunk. So, he opened the first door he came to and shoved him through it, then went back downstairs.
But lo and behold when he went back outside, there was another Tramp lying on the sidewalk. So he asked that man "Do you live here?"
"Yesh."
"Would you like me to help you upstairs?"
"Yesh."
So he did and put him in the same door with the first Tramp. Then went back downstairs, where, to his surprise, there was another tramp.
So he started over to him. But before he got to him, the tramp staggered over to a policeman and cried, "For God's sake, offisher, protect me from thish man. He'sh been doing nothing all night long but takin' me upstairsh and throwing me down the elevator shaft!"
270. WHO ARE YOU?
A certain little girl, when asked her name, would reply, "I'm Mr. Sugarbrown's daughter."
Her mother told her this was wrong, she must say, "I'm Jane Sugarbrown."
The Pastor spoke to her in Sunday School, and said, "Aren't you Mr. Sugarbrown's daughter?"
She replied, "I thought I was, but mother says I'm not."

FACTS FOR FUN
LAST WEEKS QUESTION: Why does the face get red when it's hot out?ANSWER: Skin helps regulate the body's temperature. When you're hot, the blood vessels in your skin dilate (get larger), bringing more blood to the surface of the body to cool it down. So being hot often means being red-faced.
THIS WEEK'S QUESTION: Why does laundry that is dried outside smell so nice?
Answer Next Week.
SOME FUN FACTS
792. TOKYO ROSE
A Japanese-American named Iva D'Aquino, known as ‘Tokyo Rose’ was convicted of treason for weakening the morale of American servicemen through her infamous World War II radio broadcasts. In 1977, she received a presidential pardon. (A thorn in the Americans side?)
793. SEEING DOUBLE?
Andorra, which lies between Spain and France, is somewhat unique in that it is ruled by both of them. The country is governed simultaneously by a Spanish Bishop and the President of France. (Two for the price of three! That’s government for you.)
794. BEFORE AND AFTER LUNCH
The initials AM for morning and PM evening are based on Latin words--ante meridiem and post meridiem. ‘Ante,’ of course means ‘before’ and ‘post’ means ‘after.’ ‘Meridiem’ means ‘noon.’ (What about noon itself?)

ANOTHER NIGERIAN EXPERIENCE
Was walking along the road here in Jos, getting some excercise, when a 'taxi motorbike' pulled up alongside. An unknown to me, beautiful young lady called out, "Hello David", as she got off the back of the bike and came over to speak to me. She then proceded to tell me how her life had been changed during my last ministry visit here, 2 years ago. When I asked her if she would be at tonight's meeting she replied, "I hope to, but I have difficulty getting my grandmother to come to a Pentecostal Church." People are people, facing similar problems, right throughout the world!
Thank you Sally, for a truly encouraging African experience.

A FURTHER NIGERIAN EXPERIENCE
After arriving in Jos after a 12 hour overnight bus trip, we left a few hours later for the short, 108km trip to Bauchi City! Now if you were used to Africa, you would be surprised by this statement! For how would I know that it was exactly 108km to Bauchi? Yes, outside of southern Africa, it is a continent devoid of road signs! If you don't have local knowledge, you simply get lost!
Yet this road was not only 'potholeless', but there were tombstone-like mileage markers every 2 kilometres along the road. From the ridiculous to the sublime!
Reminded me of my childhood and reading the story of Dick Whittington. Do you remember too?
Perhaps the forerunner of an Africa to come!
WHY?
63. When an octopus puts on deodorant, how does he remember where he started?64. Why is it, when a door is open it's ajar, but when a jar is open, it's not a door?
65. Why are they called buildings, when they're already finished? Shouldn't they be called builts?
66. Why do people without a watch look at their wrist when you ask them what time it is?
67. Why do women wear evening gowns to nightclubs? Shouldn't they be wearing night gowns?
(some seem to!)
68. Why is it that if someone tells you that there are billion stars in the universe you will believe them, but if they tell you a wall has wet paint you will have to touch it to be sure?
69. Why do psychics have to ask you for your name?
229 interesting, perhaps unanswerable, questions about life as we know at…
STILL ANOTHER NIGERIAN EXPERIENCE
On the same road mentioned above, our Sound Engineer followed sometime after our car in a public taxi. Taxis here, are not well known for their standards of maintenance!Pastor Gloria prayed, and the Lord told her to get him to sit in the back seat. He finally remembered and did.
As they were driving the passengers got the driver to have a look at one of the tyres that was making a noise. He did and assured them all was well. A little further along the road on a high-speed downhill section, the tyre blew out, the driver applied his brakes and the car flipped over 3 times before landing in the ditch at the side of the road. The people in the front passengers' seat had to be taken to hospital by ambulance. As did one of the back seat passengers too. Yet James escaped with a slight knock on the head and was able to set up and operate the sound system for us that night.
Thank you Lord for your warning and protection.
Another reminder of the ever present closeness of tragedy in Africa.
YOU’RE STILL THERE
A similar theme to the first poem I wrote, eight years earlier, in another time of trouble.Hopefully though, this one expresses a more mature faith. You be the judge. I know
I am coping with the problems more easily now, knowing for sure that God is on my
side.

A DAVID MUSING
Kathy finally arrived, after nearly a 2 day plane trip from New Zealand and overland in a jam packed van in Nigeria. I was so happy to see her! And she me, too!We must have been apart for too long, because we met on a dark street and she walked right past me, not recognising me!
But as you read this, my 9 weeks and Kathy's 10 days in Africa will be over, and we will be winging our way to Scotland to join our family there for 2 weeks family time. We are so pleased that 'Round the World' air tickets were invented to enable us to do this for little extra cost.
Thank you for your prayers. Please continue them until we arrive home on 16 June.
Yes, leaving Africa will be difficult, for the hearts of the people and the power of the Holy Spirit here, make it so hard to leave behind.
So until next time, Africa.......
His servant and yours

Our role is to bless and encourage those in ministry while promoting co-operation and unity of direction amongst the body of Christ, as emphasised 3 times by Jesus in His longest prayer, immediately prior to His arrest and crucifixion. "… so that they may be one as we are one." (John 17:12, 21, 23-4) Our website is currently being developed to encourage your participation one with another, to share resources, and to enable you to promote events and items of interest to the body as a whole – and have a smile while doing it!
