CHRISTIANITY - A CULTURE, ORGANISATION, OR A RELATIONSHIP?
It is easy to criticize the church and its religious ways, but the real question is 'what do we do about it?' That is the challenge that we as God's disciples face today. Over these 12 weeks we are looking at practical ways God is calling His church, you and me, and the body corporate, to change today. These are taken from my publication A REVELATION OF……. GOD'S CALL TO HIS CHURCH, published 10 years ago. I do not pretend that the changes are easy, but they are necessary for God's kingdom to be established on the earth in preparation for the return of Jesus. Let's continue.....1: FROM MARTHA TO MARY
2: FROM GREEK TO HEBREW
3: FROM REVIVAL TO HABITATION
4: FROM KINGSHIP TO SERVANTHOOD
5: FROM RECEIVING TO GIVING
It's a truism, that in many churches the best and most important sermon preached on a Sunday is for the offering!
Conversely, the twin signs of a true conversion are; making amends with those, one has wronged, plus having a generous wallet! Yes, money, giving and receiving, shows where our heart truly is. For we all love receiving, but giving reflects the heart of God within.
6 Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously.
7 Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. (2 Corinthians 9:6-7)
It is true too, that the structure of the church with its emphasis on buildings, paid clergy and programmes is a heavy consumer of financial resources, simply to keep going.
It follows from this then, that most teaching on giving is proclaimed in anticipation of the teacher, whether it is an individual or a church, being the recipient of the gifts! Put harshly, it is simply disguised self-interest.
In the Old Testament, the principle of tithing is established in 6 passages. The most detailed treatment is in Deuteronomy. Interestingly here, it only involves giving the tithe to the Levites and the poor, every third year. In the other two, the tithe is to be taken to the Temple where the tithers themselves are to consume it, giving thanks in front of the Lord.
22 Be sure to set aside a tenth of all that your fields produce each year. 23 Eat the tithe of your grain, new wine and oil, and the firstborn of your herds and flocks in the presence of the LORD your God at the place he will choose as a dwelling for his Name, so that you may learn to revere the LORD your God always. (Deuteronomy 14:22-3)
12 When you have finished setting aside a tenth of all your produce in the third year, the year of the tithe, you shall give it to the Levite, the alien, the fatherless and the widow, so that they may eat in your towns and be satisfied. (Deuteronomy 26:12)
The New Testament does not mention the tithe. Why? Simply because we have moved from the Age of Law to the Age of Grace. The emphasis in the New Testament therefore, is on giving. Giving comes out of our heart attitude towards God, our desire to bless Him as He has blessed us. It is an 'internal', heart decision under the New Covenant, not an 'external' requirement of the Law of the Old.
For those who follow Jesus fully, the heart response towards giving is likely to be more than 10%! In fact, one rich man was asked to give not 10%, but everything he had! The emphasis too, is always on giving to the poor.
21 Jesus answered, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.†(Matthew 19:21)
The focus of the prosperity type doctrines so prevalent today in the church today though, is on giving to receive. Give the Lord (by way of me) a Ford (with apologies to Henry!) and you will receive from the Lord (not from me) a Rolls Royce. Not only does this rarely happen, and if so, for other reasons, but it is contrary to the entire tenor of New Testament Scripture. For our rewards are to be heavenly, not carnal, illustrated in the example of the rich young man above, and confirmed again by Jesus here.
19 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.
20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. (Matthew 6:19-21)
Today God is calling His church, his people, away from a mindset of receiving to one of giving. Sacrificial giving! Giving of our time, our resources, our thought lives, our leisure, our all, to Him. For giving is the very heart of servanthood, to which we are all called. Yes, it is nice to receive, but it is blessed to give. To give our whole life to Jesus, as Jesus
did for us. That is the call upon His people today.
PRINCIPLE 5: God is calling out to Himself today a people who are prepared to give all to Him.
DAVID'S DOUBTS: "But God, I need an aeroplane to be efficient for you!" "If it is that critical David, I will get you there - my way!" "Okay God..."

FROM THE WORD
THE WORDS OF JESUSMay we hear what the Lord is saying to us.
Divorce (Matthew 19:1-12, Mark 10:1-9)
Jesus is questioned by the Pharisees.
“Haven’t you read that God who created people in the beginning made them male and female?
He said, ‘This is the reason a man will leave his father and mother, and join with his wife, and the two shall become one. Now they’re no longer two, but one. What God has joined together no one should separate.â€
Then asked why Moses permitted divorce.
“Because of your hard-hearted attitude Moses permitted you to divorce your wives, but it wasn’t like that in the beginning,†“I tell you, anyone who divorces his wife except on the grounds of sexual immorality and then marries another woman, commits adultery.â€
The disciples also thought the teaching was too difficult.
“Not everyone can accept this instruction, only those it’s given to,†“Some are born as eunuchs, some are made eunuchs by men, and some choose to be eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. Those who can accept this should accept it.â€
Jesus Blesses the Children (Matthew 19:10-12, Mark 10:3-16, Luke 18:15-17)
When the disciples rebuked them for approaching Jesus.
“Let the children come to me! Don’t stop them, for the kingdom of God belongs to those who are like these children. I tell you the truth, anyone who doesn’t welcome the kingdom of God like a child won’t enter it.â€

DAVID'S DOODLINGS
SERVANTHOOOD571. A ‘servant leader’ is beyond the world’s comprehension. And many Christians too!
572. To serve is a privilege, to abuse the server, a sacrilege.
573. Show me a true servant and I will show you one whom God truly loves.
574. To abuse God’s servant is to abuse God himself.
575. Maturity in God is learning that service is a privilege, not a burden.
576. The firepower of God’s Army is ‘service’.
577. Service is the invincible secret weapon of God’s Army.
578. ‘Service with a smile’ means to ‘go the extra mile.’
579. The world works by taking away, God by giving away.
580. To go down to go up is logical. Ask a bouncy ball!
581. To serve is a blessing, to lead a challenge. To be a servant leader, a challenging blessing!
582. A theologian thinks, a worshiper feels, a servant acts.

284. JERICHO WALLS
The new pastor of a rural church dropped into a Sunday-school class and began quizzing the students to test the effectiveness of the teacher.
"Who knocked down the walls of Jericho?" he demanded of one boy.
"It sure weren't me, Reverend," the boy said.
Turning to the embarrassed teacher, the pastor exclaimed, "I suppose that's a sample of the kind of class you maintain!"
"Now, Reverend, Timmy's a good boy and doesn't tell lies. If he said he didn't to it, I believe him."
Thoroughly upset, the pastor took the matter to the church's board of deacons. After due consideration, the board sent the following message to the minister: "We see no point in making an issue of this incident. The board will pay for the damages to the wall and charge it off to vandalism."
283. PASTORAL CANDIDATES
The following is a confidential report on several candidates being considered for a pastorate.
ADAM: Good man but problems with his wife. Also one reference told of how his wife and he enjoy walking nude in the woods.
NOAH: Former pastorate of 120 years with not even one convert. Prone to unrealistic building projects.
ABRAHAM: Though the references reported wife-swapping, the facts seem to show he never slept with another man's wife, but did offer to share his own wife with another man.
JOSEPH: A big thinker, but a braggart, believes in dream-interpreting, and has a prison record.
MOSES: A modest and meek man, but poor communicator, even stuttering at times. Sometimes blows his stack and acts rashly. Some say he left an earlier church over a murder charge.
DAVID: The most promising leader of all until we discovered the affair he had with his neighbor's wife.
SOLOMON: Great preacher but our parsonage would never hold all those wives.
ELIJAH: Prone to depression. Collapses under pressure.
ELISHA: Reported to have lived with a single widow while at his former church.
HOSEA: A tender and loving pastor but our people could never handle his wife's occupation.
DEBORAH: Strong leader and seems to be anointed, but she is female.
JEREMIAH: Emotionally unstable, alarmist, negative, always lamenting things, reported to have taken a long trip to bury his underwear on the bank of a foreign river.
JONAH: Refused God's call into ministry until he was forced to obey by getting swallowed up by a great fish. He told us the fish later spit him out on the shore near here. We hung up.
AMOS: Too backward and unpolished. With some seminary training he might have promise, but has a hang-up against wealthy people--might fit in better in a poor congregation.
282. LONG SERMON
A man got up to leave during a long sermon. The minister said, "Where are you going?"
The man replied, "To get a haircut."
The minister said, "You should have gotten one before you came."
The man replied, "When I came in, I didn't need one!"

443. HAY POWERED
Licensed London taxis (the famous black cabs) are required by law to carry a bale of hay at all times. This dates from the days of the horse drawn cab and the relevant law has never been revoked. (Travel at the same speed as their earlier counterparts, due to the traffic, but cost heaps more!)
444. A WISE PRECAUTION
It is against the law to remove your shoes if your feet smell bad while you're in a theatre in Winnetka, Illinois, US. (But you have to take them off before you know whether they do smell or not!)
445. CARNIVORES
In fourth century Sparta, in Greece, males 20 years of age and over were required by law to eat 2 pounds of meat a day. It was believed to make one brave. (Well, to gain weight, at least.)

99. THE ULTIMATEI took my 4 year old son, Josh, out to McDonald's for dinner one evening for a "guy night".
As we were eating our hamburgers, Josh asked "Daddy, what are these little things on the hamburger buns?"
I responded that they were tiny seeds and were ok to eat.
He was quiet for a couple of minutes and I could tell he was in deep thought.
Finally, Josh looked up and said, "Dad, if we go home and plant these seeds in our backyard, we will have enough hamburgers to last forever."
100. DEAR DIARY
Monday: Now home from honeymoon and settled in our new home. It's fun to cook for Bob. Today I made angel food cake. The recipe said, "Beat 12 eggs separately" The neighbors were nice enough to loan me some extra bowls.
Tuesday: Bob wanted fruit salad for supper. The recipe said, "Serve without dressing." So I didn't dress. What a surprise when Bob rought a friend home for supper.
Wednesday: A good day for rice. Recipe said, "Wash thoroughly before steaming the rice." It seemed kinda of silly but I took a bath. I can't say it improved the rice any.
Thursday: Today Bob asked for salad again. I tried a new recipe. It said, "Prepare ingredients, then toss on a bed of lettuce one hour before serving." Which is what led up to Bob asking me why there was lettuce in our bed that night.
Friday: I found an easy recipe for cookies. It said, "Put all ingredients in bowl and beat it." There must have been something wrong with this recipe. When I got back, everything was the same as when I left.
Saturday: Bob did the shopping today and brought home a chicken. He asked me to dress it for Sunday. ( oh boy) For some reason Bob keeps counting to ten.
Sunday: Bob's folks came to dinner. I wanted to serve roast. All I could find was hamburger. Suddenly I had a flash of genius. I put the hamburger in the oven and set the controls for roast. It still came out hamburger, much to my disappointment.
Good night, Dear Diary. This has been a very exciting week. I am eager for tomorrow to come so I can try out a new recipe on Bob. If we could just get a bigger oven, I would like to surprise him with "Chocolate Moose."

THROUGH THE EYES OF A CHILD
"Give me a sentence about a public servant," said a teacher.
A small boy wrote: "The fireman came down the ladder pregnant."
The teacher took the lad aside to correct him. "Don't you know what pregnant means?" she asked.
"Sure," said the young boy confidently. "It means carrying a child."
102. DOG DUTIES
A nursery school teacher was delivering a station wagon full of kids home one day when a fire truck zoomed past. Sitting in the front seat of the fire truck was a Dalmatian dog. The children started discussing the dog's duties.
"They use him to keep crowds back," said one youngster.
"No," said another. "He's just for good luck."
A third child brought the argument to a close. "They use the dog," she said firmly, "to find the fire hydrant."

Radical "Unprecedented" Revival Sweeps China's Government-Controlled Churches
by George Thomas : Feb 8, 2016 : CBN News"We were seeing something unprecedented. We had no theological training in the move of the Holy Spirit. This was completely new for us.†-Pastor Sun Rengui
(China)—[CBN News] You're about to hear first-hand testimony of an unprecedented Christian revival happening in parts of China. What is unique about this story is how God is moving among communist-controlled government churches.
CBN News traveled to southern China and obtained exclusive, never-before-seen images, from inside these churches.
When God Shows Up in a Communist Church
It's Thursday evening in Fujian Province, southeast China. Scores of men and women are dancing, waving flags, blowing shofars, singing and worshipping God.
You might think these images come from a charismatic service in the United States. But they're not. This is communist, and officially still atheist China.
And what Duan Huilai says is remarkable about this scene is that it's happening in an officially government-controlled congregation known as Three-Self Church.
"Dramatic changes are happening," Duan told CBN News. "God is moving in a powerful way inside these Three-Self Churches." (Screengrab via CBN News)
Duan and his wife have witnessed this move first-hand. Both are evangelists and have for several years crisscrossed the Chinese countryside documenting the Holy Spirit's move among Three-Self Churches.
"The most amazing thing is that the Lord is raising up God-loving people in these churches—so many brothers and sisters who love God deeply and want to serve Him," Duan said.
Signs and Wonders Now Allowed
Pastor Duan says what is happening today in Beijing and in other parts of China as it relates to the powerful move of God amongst the Three-Self Churches is quite remarkable considering where the church has been in the last 30 years.
"Every sermon that the pastor preached back then had to be vetted by the government authorities. Young people were never allowed to attend these churches so you'd only see old people, mostly women," Duan said. "Preaching about the power of the Holy Spirit was forbidden. You couldn't talk about end times or preach repentance."
Topics on healings, miracles, signs and wonders were out of the question. Not anymore.
"Nowadays people have accepted these topics," Duan said.
Two main types of churches exist in China: registered and unregistered. Registered congregations, also known as Three-Self Churches, are government-approved.
Unregistered, sometimes called underground or house churches, operate outside government control, and for decades faced intense persecution. And with that persecution came tremendous growth.
Three-Self Churches on the other hand never experienced that kind of explosive growth. Until now.
"Now there's big revivals happening in the Three-Self Churches," Dr. Zhao Xiao told CBN News from his offices on the outskirts of China's capital city.
Communist Encounters Christ
Zhao is one of China's foremost experts on Christianity. A former Communist Party member and atheist, Zhao converted after reading the Bible.
"If you go to Haidian Church, you'll find yourself in a more than 100-meter line trying to get inside and worship. In Shenzhen, there are usually an average of 500 people being baptized each Sunday!" he shared.
Decades ago, the Chinese government had a law that said that young men and women below the age of 18 could not attend Three-Self Churches. Zhao says those rules have been loosened in recent years.
"There's an increasing proportion of them in churches now—more young male Believers, professionals, mainstream celebrities, especially in the big cities, that are attending the church unlike the past when it was mainly the elderly who attended."
Love Camp
Back at the Thursday night meeting in Fujian Province, folks have gathered for a four-day event affectionately called "Love Camp."
"Love Camp aims to help the Believer grow in their faith walk and get closer to God," Sun Rengui told CBN News one evening.
Sun is a pastor and leads the camp. He says the idea came 12 years ago when he says the Holy Spirit one day showed up while he was preaching at the Three-Self Church he pastors here.
"We were in the middle of the service; suddenly everyone at the church felt the Holy Spirit anointing fall. Some couldn't stand straight, others fell down. Some were dizzy and nauseous. When the worship began, people started crying. After the service, some were being healed. I saw demons being chased away from people's bodies."
Pastor Sun says his church had never experienced anything like it.
"We were seeing something unprecedented. We had no theological training in the move of the Holy Spirit. This was completely new for us," he said.
Word quickly spread.
"We were one of the first churches to experience this in the area. Soon, leaders from other churches came to us and were eager to receive the Holy Spirit. Later they also started witnessing the Holy Spirit's move as well," Pastor Sun said.
But it wasn't without controversy.
"People doubted if this was real. There was even conflict among my church staff," Sun said. "But as time passed, more people accepted the power of the Holy Spirit."
Transformed Lives
Twelve years later, Pastor Sun says the impact of the Holy Spirit's move is seen in the transformed lives of church members.
"Our cell groups are expanding, more people are attending church, and more people are going outside the church walls into society to share the Gospel."
The church runs two orphanages and two elderly care centers, and twice a year puts on the Love Camp.
"We have four goals in this camp: to evangelize people, strengthen the family, disciple Believers and encourage other Three-Self Churches to embrace the power of the Holy Spirit."
For Pastor Duan and his wife, this is evidence that God is doing something special in the world's most populous nation.
"I was speaking in Shandong, Henan and Zhejiang recently. Around 8,000 people joined the meeting. Last Christmas, I was speaking at a Three-Self Church in Yuhuan and I was amazed there were 12,000 people," Duan exclaimed with joy.
They, Dr. Zhao and countless others say they feel honored to play a part in helping more Chinese turn to Jesus Christ.
"The number of Christians in China is growing rapidly. It means Christ is starting to play an active role in China's society and that's good in many ways," Zhao said.

A REVELATION OF…….THE 3 GARDENS OF GODHaving spent much of my life involved in the gardening industry, as a grower, wholesaler of flowers, bulbs and plants and finally as a mail order seller of the same, this revelation has reached into my 'gardeners' heart!
Gardens and nature have a special place in God's heart too. This is not surprising, for He was their creator! Nor is it surprising then, that He should choose garden settings for key events in His interaction with man to take place.
Let's see what they are.

WAXING LYRICAL
Feeling dejected that you don't seem to be doing as well as the ministry down the road? Then, this poem is a message of reassurance for you. Yes, God love you too!YES IT'S TRUE, GOD LOVES YOU!
God loves us all,
The big, the small,
The short and the tall,
At home, at the mall.
Yes it's true, God loves you!
We look at others, see the exterior,
So easy to feel, greatly inferior.
Their ministry is so much bigger than mine!
I'm on the wrong side, of the thin red line!
But it's true, God loves you!
Yesterday, I went past the church down the road,
Everything about it was surely made, me to goad!
From the Mercedes in the carpark, to the automatic door,
Me, in my faithful old jalopy, with four on the floor.
But it's true, God loves you!
With all the trappings of success, God is surely blessing him,
When it comes to my church, expenses, we have to trim!
Oh God, my God, what have I done wrong?
My ministry - it would sell for a song!
But it's true, God loves you!
This man, he's so annointed,
Me - I'm just disappointed!
My Lord, I've given my whole life to you,
Every day, my commitment, I do renew.
But it's true, God loves you!
I love all my people,
More than the steeple.
Many, over the years, have let me down,
But still I bless them, with Your crown.
But it's true, God loves you!
What more can I do for you Lord?
Thought we were of one accord!
But when I see what others have done,
Why have I missed out on all the fun!
But it's true, God loves you!
"I hear you, I hear you, my faithful one,
For you, just for you, I gave my Son,
You are so very precious in my sight,
A shining star, radiating my light."
Yes it's true, God loves you!
"What you perceive, will not always be true,
You don't see things, from my point of view,
For I am looking always, to the heart,
Don't put the horse, before the cart."
Yes it's true, God loves you!
"I do not judge my own by numbers or wealth,
These can be achieved by the human self,
But by how much of yourself you will give to Me,
Commitment and submission - that's what I see."
Yes it's true, God loves you!
"The order in Heaven is so different to earth,
For I am only interested, in spiritual girth!
Not beauty, nor success, nor intelligence, nor size,
I know your heart is for me, that much I realise."
Yes it's true, God loves you!
"So when the glorious day arrives, to finally come, stay with me,
You have built up treasure here, will last throughout eternity,
No, don't get yourself deceived by the glitter of earthly ways,
You are destined to rule and reign with Me - now and always!"
Yes it's true, God loves you!

A DAVID MUSING
Friday was my wife Kathy's birthday. We had a fun day. My Power Point generated card is pictured. In explanation, she missed out on candles in the actual cake I got her, and 3 others with similar birthdays, at our group meeting on Tuesday evening. The years come, and the years go. For all the '& again's' on the card, we have been married, which seems an awful lot, when you look at it the way! But the years, both good and tougher, have flown by so fast!
Without Kathy's support I would not be writing these ezines today. Than you doll for all you have done for me, and for all the experiences we have shared together. May there be many more to come!
So until next week.....
MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOU BLESS GOD
