TRANSITION FROM 'THE CHURCH' TO 'THE KINGDOM'

A new series, looking at the some of the changes we need to make to move from a 'church' to a 'kingdom' mindset. (See the last 3 weeks of PGIM)

FROM "COME IN" TO "GO OUT" continued

We saw last week that the church has an inwards looking focus while the kingdom is focused on the whole world.

Jesus was not a religious man! Not in the style of the Rabbis of the time, nor of the religious today. While Jesus occasionally spoke in the local synagogue, this was not His primary way of spreading the Good News of the kingdom. His baptism was in a river. His temptation was on a mountain. His first miracle at a wedding in a home. Mostly, he spoke to the ordinary people in the open air. His miracles took place at these meetings, or when he was walking through town, on a boat, or at someone's house, etc. Feeding the multitudes is but one example.....

Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand

13 When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place. Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on foot from the towns. 14 When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick. 15 As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food.” 16 Jesus replied, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.” 17 “We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish,” they answered. 18 “Bring them here to me,” he said. 19 And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. 20 They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. 21 The number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and children. (Matthew 14:13-21)

Jesus was totally involved in interacting with people in the world and He taught His disciples to do the same.

Jesus Sends Out the Twelve

Then Jesus went around teaching from village to village. 7 Calling the Twelve to him, he sent them out two by two and gave them authority over evil spirits. 8 These were his instructions: “Take nothing for the journey except a staff—no bread, no bag, no money in your belts. 9 Wear sandals but not an extra tunic. 10 Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you leave that town. 11 And if any place will not welcome you or listen to you, shake the dust off your feet when you leave, as a testimony against them.” 12 They went out and preached that people should repent. 13 They drove out many demons and anointed many sick people with oil and healed them. (Mark 6:6b-12)

And confirmed this principle with the seventy-two.....

Jesus Sends Out the Seventy-two

After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them two by two ahead of him to every town and place where he was about to go. 2 He told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field. 3 Go! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves. (Luke 10:1-3)

Paul continued this principle of going out amongst the people. While, as a trained Pharisee, he often first gravitated to the local synagogue, particularly at the beginning of his ministry, so giving the Jews an opportunity to hear the Good news of their countryman Jesus, he inevitably ended up ministering in other places, for he was sent to minister to the gentiles ......

16 While Paul was waiting for them in Athens, he was greatly distressed to see that the city was full of idols. 17 So he reasoned in the synagogue with the Jews and the God-fearing Greeks, as well as in the marketplace day by day with those who happened to be there. (Acts 17:16-17)

He also spoke in the meeting of the Areopagus.....

22 Paul then stood up in the meeting of the Areopagus and said: “Men of Athens! I see that in every way you are very religious. 23 For as I walked around and looked carefully at your objects of worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: TO AN UNKNOWN GOD. Now what you worship as something unknown I am going to proclaim to you. (Acts 17:22-3)

Interestingly, he then said.....

24 “The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by hands. (Acts 17:24)

"Lord, please help us understand"

I am not an evangelist by nature or gifting. But it is my desire to witness through my life and actions to those with whom I interact that there is something different about me, that there is Jesus in my life. And to be obedient to what the Lord tells me to do. It gives me much satisfaction when others comment on this.

We do not need to fear the world, but to overcome it, to be witnesses in our day to day living, in order to see the kingdom established upon the earth.....

3 For the [true] love of God is this: that we do His commands [keep His ordinances and are mindful of His precepts and teaching]. And these orders of His are not irksome (burdensome, oppressive, or grievous). 4 For whatever is born of God is victorious over the world; and this is the victory that conquers the world, even our faith.
5 Who is it that is victorious over [that conquers] the world but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God [who adheres to, trusts in, and relies on that fact]? (1 John 5:3-5 Amplified Version)

Are you, am I, prepared to follow the example of Jesus and the disciples today?

FROM THE WORD

Jesus Walks on the Water

"Immediately Jesus made his disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowd. After leaving them, he went up on a mountainside to pray. When evening came, the boat was in the middle of the lake, and he was alone on land. He saw the disciples straining at the oars, because the wind was against them. About the fourth watch of the night he went out to them, walking on the lake. He was about to pass by them, but when they saw him walking on the lake, they thought he was a ghost. They cried out, because they all saw him and were terrified. Immediately he spoke to them and said, “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” Then he climbed into the boat with them, and the wind died down. They were completely amazed, for they had not understood about the loaves; their hearts were hardened. When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret and anchored there. As soon as they got out of the boat, people recognized Jesus. They ran throughout that whole region and carried the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was. And wherever he went—into villages, towns or countryside—they placed the sick in the marketplaces. They begged him to let them touch even the edge of his cloak, and all who touched him were healed." (Mark 6:45-56)

In Athens

"While Paul was waiting for them in Athens, he was greatly distressed to see that the city was full of idols. So he reasoned in the synagogue with the Jews and the God-fearing Greeks, as well as in the marketplace day by day with those who happened to be there. A group of Epicurean and Stoic philosophers began to dispute with him. Some of them asked, “What is this babbler trying to say?” Others remarked, “He seems to be advocating foreign gods.” They said this because Paul was preaching the good news about Jesus and the resurrection. Then they took him and brought him to a meeting of the Areopagus, where they said to him, “May we know what this new teaching is that you are presenting? You are bringing some strange ideas to our ears, and we want to know what they mean.” (All the Athenians and the foreigners who lived there spent their time doing nothing but talking about and listening to the latest ideas.) Paul then stood up in the meeting of the Areopagus and said: “Men of Athens! I see that in every way you are very religious. For as I walked around and looked carefully at your objects of worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: TO AN UNKNOWN GOD. Now what you worship as something unknown I am going to proclaim to you. “The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by hands. And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything, because he himself gives all men life and breath and everything else. From one man he made every nation of men, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he determined the times set for them and the exact places where they should live. God did this so that men would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us. ‘For in him we live and move and have our being.’ As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’ “Therefore since we are God’s offspring, we should not think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone—an image made by man’s design and skill. In the past God overlooked such ignorance, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent. For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to all men by raising him from the dead.” When they heard about the resurrection of the dead, some of them sneered, but others said, “We want to hear you again on this subject.” At that, Paul left the Council. A few men became followers of Paul and believed. Among them was Dionysius, a member of the Areopagus, also a woman named Damaris, and a number of others." (Acts 7:16-34)

Faith in the Son of God

"Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves the father loves his child as well. This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out his commands. This is love for God: to obey his commands. And his commands are not burdensome, for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world? Only he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God. This is the one who came by water and blood—Jesus Christ. He did not come by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth. For there are three that testify: the Spirit, the water and the blood; and the three are in agreement. We accept man’s testimony, but God’s testimony is greater because it is the testimony of God, which he has given about his Son. Anyone who believes in the Son of God has this testimony in his heart. Anyone who does not believe God has made him out to be a liar, because he has not believed the testimony God has given about his Son. And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life." (1 John 5:1-12)

RELIGION, REVELATION AND GOD'S KINGDOM

1033. Religion is centred upon man, the kingdom, upon God.

1034. Religion is the outcome of the institutionalisation of a God given vision.

1035. Religion is based upon rules, God's kingdom upon obedience.

1036. Religion seeks to control the Spirit of God which His kingdom releases.

1037. Religion controls, God's kingdom releases.

1038. Religion seeks to define an infinite God. By definition, it is doomed to failure.

1039. Religion seeks to interpret the answers to life found in God's kingdom. Surely a direct approach is best.

1040. As religion goes, God's kingdom grows.

1041. Revelation and religion make incompatible companions.

569. THE BAPTIST FAMILY AND THE DOG
A strong Baptist family decided to buy a home and make everything in the house Baptist. They were going to make it look and feel Baptist through and through. So when they were finished they went to a petshop to look for a Baptist dog.

They asked the owner, "Do you have a Baptist dog?"

Surprised, the petshop owner thought about it for a while and then nodded, saying, "Yes... yes, I think we have a dog that will fit your description."

So the owner brought out the dog to the family, and the father said, "Let's see if this is a real Baptist dog." So the father said to the dog, "Go get a Bible."

And the dog ran over to a table, grabbed a Bible in its mouth, ran back to the man and plopped the book at his feet.

Impressed, the father continued, "Let's see if this dog knows its books of the Bible... Turn to Psalm 23".

The dog then opened the Bible with its snout and pawed through the pages to Psalm 23.

Very pleased, the father bought the dog and brought it home. The next day, the family had visitors. They showed their friends the Baptist dog and the things it could do.

Finally, the friends asked, "Well, can it do any other tricks that normal dogs do?"

The Baptist father wondered and said, "Hmm, I don't know. I've never tried." He then ordered the dog, "Heel."

Suddenly the dog leaped onto the father's lap and placed its paw on the man's head and started to pray.

"Wait a minute!" exclaimed the Baptist mother, "This dog isn't Baptist! It's Pentecostal!"

FACTS FOR FUN

LAST WEEKS QUESTION: What or who is the Cardinal Bird named after?

ANSWER: The bright red bird, much beloved in the United States, owes its name to the equally bright red-robed officials of the Catholic Church. The Catholic Cardinals got their name from the adjective ‘cardinal’ which means ‘important’ or ‘that on which something depends,’ from the Latin ‘cardo,’ or ‘hinge.’ They started wearing these distinctive red robes in the thirteenth century, not to be self important, but when Pope Innocent IV proposed they wear red cloaks and red hats as a symbol of their willingness to shed blood for their faith. (Would they – and we - still?)

THIS WEEK'S QUESTION: What is a ‘red dog’?

Answer Next Week.

SOME FUN FACTS

946. "THAT'S ALL FOLKS!"
Mel Blanc, the voice of Bugs Bunny was allergic to carrots! Yet he had to crunch into them, for a carrot sound is unique. ‘The Man of 1100 Voices’ would crunch, then ‘spit ‘em out’. (Did “That’s all, folks!” the epitaph on his headstone, really mean, relief at no more carrots?)

947. ‘DONTDONT’
Sadly, the last dodo bird died in 1681. (An early environmental ‘nono’?)

948. TAST TOMATOES
Tomatoes were originally thought to be poisonous. Until 1733 when Dr Siccary couldn’t resist any longer and took the taste test on behalf of all mankind. Thank you Dr Siccary! (Reminds one of Eve and the forbidden fruit – but with the opposite result - a taste of heaven!)

LIFES A LAUGH

203. TOOTH FAIRY
This is a true story that happened to my neighbor years ago when our children were little.
Laura and Patty shared the same bedroom and when Laura lost a tooth, she placed it under her pillow. The next morning when she awoke, her tooth was gone and some money was in
its place to put in her piggy bank. Patty went quietly up to her mother and said, "Mommy, I know who the tooth fairy is."

Her mother replied, "How do you know?"

"I saw you put money under Laura's pillow last night when she was asleep, " Patty stated.

Rather surprised, her mother replied, "Well, I guess you're right, I was the tooth fairy."

Patty thought for a moment and with a big grin on her face said, "Now if you're the tooth fairy, then Daddy must be God!"

204. VERY SAFE
A teenage boy and his grandfather go fishing one day. While fishing, the old man starts talking about how times have changed. The young man picks up on this and starts talking about the various problems and diseases going around.

Teen says, "Grandpa, they didn't have a whole lot of problems with all these diseases when you were young did they?"

Grandpa replies, "Nope."

The teen says, "Well, what did you guys use for safe sex?"

Grandpa replies, "A wedding ring."

205. DAY OR NIGHT?
[I remember] when I was in high school and was in an advanced physics class. Keep in mind that these students were supposed to be the ones more capable of understanding and going much further with some pretty advanced stuff.

Well, our teacher was a hobby astronomer, with some pretty nice camera and telescope equipment. One day he brought in some pictures he had taken of the sun to see the sunspots etc. During the "slide-show," one of the students asked:

"Were these pictures taken during the day or at night?"

After a couple of minutes of uproarious laughter from the rest of the class, he finally realized his mistake.

Lots of laughs at life here.....

Pastor’s wife sends body double to sit pleasantly on front pew

GRAND FORKS, Mich. — Unbeknownst to her husband or congregation, Trudy Smith has been avoiding church for two years, sending a look-alike in her place.

“I’m saddened to announce that the woman you’ve seen here is not my wife,” pastor Nevin Smith said to a hushed congregation at Belfrey Presbyterian church.

His wife Trudy began staying home after running into a woman at Kohl’s who looked very much like her.

“I asked what she did on Sunday mornings, and would she like to make a hundred bucks a week?” Trudy says. “She said yes and suddenly I was free.”

The impostor played the role successfully, greeting people, hugging her husband, listening to the sermon, taking copious notes. But she was found out when Nevin invited her up one Sunday for a spontaneous reprisal of an old hymn they sang early in their ministry.

“I knew the kids’ names, anniversaries and birthdays, but I didn’t know that song,” said the fake Trudy, who asked not to be identified. She made roughly $10,000 over two years.

“Worth every penny,” says the real Trudy, who’s back on the front pew. “You know, mannequins are getting more realistic …” •

WAXING LYRICAL

This tale was written over a 'period of waiting', while seeking premises for a store we wished to open for africa arise'. Go through all the emotions before giving it all to God!

WAITING (Continued)

Monday comes, another deal.
Great rent, it's a steal!
At last, something now, to us to show,
But is it the best, must wait to know.

Two weeks more,
Before we hear,
A deal in store,
Or a bum steer?

But now peace reigns,
God makes the gains.
It's all up to Him,
The battle to win.

Nothing to do but only wait.
Easier now for David Tait.
As I trust Him even more,
For what He has in store.

Wednesday, a call out of the blue,
Sounds too good, to be true.
New on the market that very day.
Maybe for this, has been the delay.

An offer on Friday,
Now wait some more,
Hear on Tuesday,
If not before.

'Just rest in me, my son,
In my time, it is done.
Trust me more and more,
I will open the door.'

The days pass.
Am at peace.
Nothings fast,
With a lease!

Late Thursday afternoon,
Could it be so soon?
An agreement comes,
Have done their sums.

It is all we requested,
Bar one point or two.
Our prayer is answered,
'It's God's gift to you!'

Friday morning,
Points included,
No more waiting,
Signature added.

Deal is done!
Now the fun!
Getting started,
Waiting departed.

Thank you so much Lord!
We are in one accord.
It surely has to be of you,
Deal's too good to be true!

Lord, as I now muse on what I've learned,
I see that more of you, I have discerned.
Now know I can always rely upon You in all You ask me I do,
Just need to wait, to rest, to fully trust, yes, it's true.

A DAVID MUSING

It is now just over a year since Kathy and I were attacked in our home by a disgruntled volunteer in our charity clothing shops who had been caught stealing and referred to the Police.

I ended up with a fractured skull and 58 stitches in my head and arm while Kathy received a black and blue back from her beating on there.

We can testify again today, one year after the event, that we have suffered no emotional, mental or spiritual trauma from this attack. (No ongoing physical problems either. thank you Lord.)

Why is this? It is because Kathy suggested, on the way out to the hospital in the ambulance that we forgive Kurt. We did. And it is just amazing, the power of forgiveness! All that Jesus said is true! How unsurprising!

Yet many of us are not prepared to forgive those who have hurt us, whether in a physical, emotional or spiritual way. And roots of bitterness grow to so easily become all consuming in our life.

If you have unforgiveness in your life, deal with it today. It may well bless the one who hurt you, but I can assure you, it will bless you even more!

Even if you don't believe me, believe Jesus when He said.....

37 “Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. (Luke 6:37)

It truly works!

Until next week.....

MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOU BLESS GOD

His servant and yours
