WHOSE CHURCH IS IT ANYWAY?
THE POST APOSTOLIC CHURCHAgain I acknowledge that much of the material that follows is drawn from the excellent publication by Eddie L. Hyatt, 2000 Years of Charismatic Christianity. For specific references to the writings quoted, please refer to that publication.
We now move on to the post-Reformation eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
1700-1900
PHOEBE PALMER (1807-1874)
The 19th century Holiness movement began in the Methodist Church, as they sought to revive the religious fervour of the 1700's and John Wesley's teaching of a 'second work of grace' in the believer. While other words were used to describe this teaching in the various denominations to which the movement spread, it was what we now know as the baptism of the Holy Spirit.
Phoebe Palmer was the most prominent and influential leader of this movement. The wife of a prominent New York physician, Dr Walter Palmer, she was a Methodist lay person. While never ordained, she has been widely regarded as the most influential female theologian ever.
In 1840, she became the leader of the 'Tuesday Meeting for the Promotion of Holiness'. Meetings were held in the Palmer's spacious parlour, and attended by 4 Methodist bishops and other leaders from the Methodists and other denominations. Phoebe wrote 3 books and edited and published the most influential Holiness periodical of the era, "The Guide to Holiness'.
She travelled widely throughout the US, Canada and Britain, in later times accompanied by her husband.
From England, Phoebe reported, "the Lord was saving the people by scores daily." and that "now the entire (Newcastle) community seems ready to acknowledge its [the revival's] power." Their was such a presence of God that "people are weeping all over the house" and "the power of God is sensibly felt to be present to heal." She also spoke of people who "felt the girdings of almighty power in an unusual manner" and of "tokens of divine presence" among them.
Phoebe understood this as "a resuscitation of primitive Christianity and primitive Methodism."
Speaking in tongues occurred also. In a series of afternoon meetings in England, the emphasis was to be "the full baptism of the Holy Spirit as received by the one hundred and twenty disciples on the day of Pentecost." At another time, "the baptism of fire descended; and, as in the early days of Christianity, utterance as a restraining gift was also given." And again, a local preacher came forward and received "the tongue of fire." then "spoke as the Spirit gave utterance."
Through Phoebe Palmer's influence, Pentecostal language came to replace Wesleyan terminology in describing the second blessing. Sanctification became the baptism of the Holy Ghost and instead of cleansing from sin, the blessing now became endowment of power. Critically, these modern Pentecostal/Charismatic terms have lost much of the spiritual depth of meaning of the original ones, and the godly requirement to live a holy life has been lost to an undue emphasis on speaking in tongues and power, without evidence of a changed life, as Phoebe Palmer pronounced.
So we can continue to say.....
THE TRUE FOLLOWERS OF JESUS ARE ONES WHO ARE OBEDIENT TO THE LEADING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IN THEIR LIVES.

FROM THE WORD
THE WORDS OF JESUS continuedThe Lord has asked me to compile a publication of the words Jesus spoke, as recorded in the New Testament in chronological order. I have got about halfway, and have found it very enlightening and encouraging in my relationship with Him. The final version will have changes of layout and version used, but this is a foretaste of things to come. Of course, it is not a Bible substitute! I Hope you find it helpful too, in your walk with Jesus.
Lawyer Tests Jesus* (Luke 10:25-37)
Jesus replies with Parable of the Good Samaritan.
26 “What is written in the Law?†he replied. “How do you read it?â€
28 “You have answered correctly,†Jesus replied. “Do this and you will live.â€
“A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he fell into the hands of robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. 31 A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. 32 So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. 34 He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, took him to an inn and took care of him. 35 The next day he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’
36 “Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?â€
“Go and do likewise.â€
Martha Works While Mary Listens* (Luke 10:38:42)
Jesus comments.
41 “Martha, Martha,†the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, 42 but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.â€
Jesus teaches the Disciples How to Pray* (Luke 11:1-13)
Lord’s prayer and explanation.
“When you pray, say: â€â€˜Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come. 3 Give us each day our daily bread. 4 Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us. And lead us not into temptation.’â€
“Suppose one of you has a friend, and he goes to him at midnight and says, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves of bread, 6 because a friend of mine on a journey has come to me, and I have nothing to set before him.’
7 “Then the one inside answers, ‘Don’t bother me. The door is already locked, and my children are with me in bed. I can’t get up and give you anything.’ 8 I tell you, though he will not get up and give him the bread because he is his friend, yet because of the man’s boldness he will get up and give him as much as he needs.
9 “So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.
11 “Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13 If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!â€

GROWING IN GOD34. It’s easy to be wise in theory, but a lot more difficult in practise!
314. The major difference between childhood and adulthood is taking responsibility. Many Christians dislike responsibility!
315. In nature, human growth occurs naturally. We expect the same in the Spiritual and get offended when others grow more quickly than us.
316. Human growth is measured in height, girth and wrinkles, spiritual growth by the 'fruit of the Spirit.' Often we confuse the two.
987. To see the view we must first climb the mountain.
988. Growing pains happen in the spiritual as well as the natural.
989. To grow in our God we must first shrink in our self.
990. 'Going down' is the secret to 'growing up' in God.

8. CHILD POWER!
At the end of a series of lessons on the adventures of the Children of Israel, Johnny put up his hand and asked a question.
"Yes Johnny," said the teacher.
"There’s something I can’t work out. According to the Bible, the Children of Israel crossed the Red Sea." "Right."
"And the Children of Israel beat up the Philistines and built the Temple and did lots of other things too. "That’s right Johnny."
"Please tell me Sir then, what were all the grown ups doing?"
7. SERMON TO ORDER
After the praise and worship the pastor got up and said, " For today I have prepared 3 sermons. A $10 hell raiser on fire and brimstone that will take an hour and a half to deliver, a $50 exposition on the evils of sin that will take 45 minutes to give, along with a $100, 10 minute gem on love and generosity. We will now take the collection to see which you vote for!"
6. YOU CAN BANK ON IT!
A woman went into the bank to cash a cheque before going Christmas shopping.
"What denominations would you like?" asked the Teller.
"Oh, good heavens – has it come to this!" said the woman. "Well give me 50 Baptists and 50 Presbyterians, please."

Goldfish: "Just because I have a three-second memory, they don't think I'll mind eating the same fish flakes ... Oh boy! Fish flakes!"
Dog: "Man, why do they keep rubbing my nose in it? I already KNOW whose it is!"
Goldfish: "The wimpy knight never comes out of the castle to fight me for dominion over the fish tank. So I must continue patrolling, for I am lord and master!"
Parrot: "Tease, tease, tease! But do those greedy clowns ever really give me a cracker? HECK, no!"
Dog: "Human legs that just tease."
Cat: "Why are these people in my house?"
Goldfish: "Oh, tap-tap-tap! There's a new one!"
61.DOGS RULES FOR CATS
1. Add the required amount of shampoo to the toilet water, and put both lids up.
2. Pick up the cat and soothe him while you carry him towards the bathroom.
3. In one smooth movement, put the cat in the toilet and close both lids. (You may need to stand on the lid.) The cat will self agitate and make ample suds. (Never mind the noises that come from the toilet, the cat is actually enjoying this.)
4. Flush the toilet three or four times. (This provides a "power-wash" and "rinse".)
5. Have someone open the door to the outside (Be sure that there are no people between the toilet and the outside door.)
6. Stand behind the toilet as far as you can, and quickly lift both lids.
7. The cat will rocket out of the toilet, and run outside where he will dry himself off. Both the commode and the cat will now be sparkling clean!
Sincerely,
The Dog
62. ADMITTING DEFEAT
A man absolutely hated his wife's cat and decided to get rid of him one day by driving him 20 blocks from his home and leaving him at the park. As he was getting home, the cat was walking up the driveway.
The next day he decided to drive the cat 40 blocks away. He put the beast out and headed home. Driving back up his driveway, there was the cat!
He kept taking the cat further and further and the cat would always beat him home. At last he decided to drive a few miles away, turn right, then left, past the bridge, then right again and another right until he reached what he thought was a safe distance from his home and left the cat there.
Hours later the man calls home to his wife: "Susan, is the cat there?"
"Yes", the wife answers, "why do you ask?"
Frustrated, the man answered, "Put that no good thing on the phone, I'm lost and need directions.

Entire Families Coming to Christ in Saudi Arabia
by Teresa Neumann : Mar 5, 2014 : Greg Kernaghan – OM International/Charisma"I am an Iranian and was not only a Muslim but also part of a terrorist family. Jesus appeared to me in a dream and changed my life. Do not miss this!"
In November 2013, Greg Kernaghan, a writer for Operation Mobilization (OM) International, travelled through the Middle East interviewing and recording Christian workers in those areas. The following are accounts from his time in Saudi Arabia. Note that the names and some of the places he mentions have been changed to protect Christians from persecution. (Map via Frontline Missions)
Writes Kernaghan: "We're hearing of women and whole families coming to Christ, which is significant. Normally we would know of individual men but, as the culture places such importance on the family unit, this is a major step forward.
"One girl is writing hymns and posting them on the Internet. That was where she learnt of Christ and has 'met' workers, although she has yet to meet other Christians face to face. Two of her sisters also believe in Christ. A Bahraini across the country is gifted in playing local Arabic instruments. He puts her hymns to music and posts them on YouTube."
Another story told to Kernaghan is about two workers "who walked past a sidewalk café in Europe. Five Arabs invited them to join them. God prompted one of the workers, a Saudi—whose dialect was immediately recognizable and thus a surprise to the five men—to share his testimony. The hearers asked, 'Aren't you afraid of confessing this because of the consequences in your country?' He replied, 'No, because I am at peace with God and know where I will spend eternity.' As he continued to speak one of the listeners, also a Saudi, began to weep. Their time ended with the workers praying for the five men.
"The next day, they met one of the Saudi men who said, 'As you spoke yesterday, I felt real peace within me for the first time.' He asked for materials to share with the other four friends.
"While the workers were in conversation on the street with another Arab," notes Kernaghan, "an Iranian woman approached them – shocking it itself – and said, 'You must listen to this man; he speaks truth. I am an Iranian and was not only a Muslim but also part of a terrorist family. Jesus appeared to me in a dream and changed my life. Do not miss this!' This caused the man to begin thinking and questioning deeply; not long after he came to Christ."

WAXING LYRICAL
I had no idea what to write on this particular day for A David Musing, so just started, and this is the result! Hope you find it an encouragement too, as I do!LIFE
I don't know what to write,
To be humble or to skite!
Which side of my nature will win?
To be godly - or maybe, to sin.
Life, day by day's a combination of good and bad,
Haven't reached perfection yet - 'tis most sad!
But I am letting my God work on it,
Though sometimes, I'm a real twit!
Why do I do wrong when I know what is right?
Do give up on God without even a fight!
But my God, He never gives up on me,
Nor will He - it's the same for thee!
He gives me the grace I don't deserve,
When on the path of life, I swerve,
One day to the left, another to the right,
When I stray away, He keeps me in sight.
Oh Lord, I thank you so much for all you do,
To keep me on your path, straight and true.
May my daily life become a reflection of You,
More like you Jesus, through and through.
Thank you my Lord for sticking with me,
With You, one plus one equals three!
You give me strength the enemy to fight,
When I'm with you, yes, life is right!
