WHERE THERE'S A WILL, THERE'S A - 'DISCIPLE'
In Jesus, the key difference between a 'believer' and a 'disciple' is illustrated by the application of faith to our life. While it is good to believe, living out our beliefs, fulfilling our potential in Jesus, is the defining characteristic of a disciple. And it is disciples, He desires us to be.Unfortunately, in our desire to see non-believers come to the Lord, we have tended to water down the New Testament message to such an extent that there is little difference between the beliefs and practices of many Christians and good living people in the general community. We make it so easy to become a Christian. Believe 'this' and 'that' and you will be 'saved'. The emphasis is on the benefits rather than the accompanying responsibilities, or life changes the decision requires.
The more I read the New Testament, the more convinced I become that this approach holds back, rather than grows the kingdom of God. 'Easy Christianity' may be easy, but it is neither biblical nor effective.
The followers, the disciples, of rabbis in the time of Jesus, imitated their chosen rabbi in all that he did. They did not want to be out of his sight, in case they missed something. Each disciple desired to learn all that his rabbi knew, to become like him in every way. It was a total commitment!
Of course, as we see with Jesus disciples, they did not always succeed, but with the exception of Judas, who was otherwise influenced, all tried their best. So much so, that 10 of the remaining 11 were subsequently martyred for their actions! And John didn't have it too easy either, on the island prison of Patmos! Yes, their beliefs were reflected in their actions, right through to the human finality of martyrdom.
There is an old English song that goes, "Give me 10 men who are stout-hearted men and I'll soon give you 10,000 more." This is simply an extension of a basic biblical principle to the world.
The purpose of the church is not simply to attract people through the door. But further, to encourage and assist those who enter the doorway of salvation to become disciples of the Lord, become as much like Him in character as it is possible to be, within our human limitations.
As we change our focus from numbers to discipleship, greater numbers will finally be attracted. It may not seem that way initially, but finally, outsiders will see the positive difference Jesus makes in our lives. This is the application of the principle of the 'stout-hearted men' the song refers to.
We need to be seen to be different to the world! Some will be attracted; others repelled! But that is how it has always been! Time and again persecution has increased the spread of the kingdom, for the persecuted exhibit a point of difference, a commitment, display a reality of Jesus in their lives that attracts others to the faith. Today's classic example is China where the church is growing powerfully, of necessity, in an underground fashion. It has no buildings, no programmes, but simply but simply exhibits the love of Jesus, one to another.
The church in general, although strong in overall congregational activities such as worship and preaching the Word, has been weak in mentoring its followers. One on one, in small groups, encouraging believers to discipleship, to develop the character of Jesus in individual lives in order that we might become the light of the world! That we might be different to those around us! To put our beliefs into action! To truly apply our will, our actions, our life, to the cause of Jesus, becoming His disciples. It's not easy! It's not popular! It's time consuming and rejection will be experienced on occasions! But it is necessary so that, "Where there's a (submissive) will (to Jesus), there's a Disciple"!
"But surely numbers are all important, David?"
"No. Not even when it helps the giving! For it is disciples who change the world"

FROM THE WORD
THE GREAT COMMISSION"Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.â€" (Matthew 28:16-20)
"All men will hate you because of me, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved. When you are persecuted in one place, flee to another. I tell you the truth, you will not finish going through the cities of Israel before the Son of Man comes. “A student is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master. It is enough for the student to be like his teacher, and the servant like his master. If the head of the house has been called Beelzebub, how much more the members of his household! “So do not be afraid of them. There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known. What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight; what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the roofs. Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell. Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. “Whoever acknowledges me before men, I will also acknowledge him before my Father in heaven. But whoever disowns me before men, I will disown him before my Father in heaven. (Matthew 10:22-33)
"We have much to say about this, but it is hard to explain because you are slow to learn. In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil. Therefore let us leave the elementary teachings about Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death, and of faith in God, instruction about baptisms, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. And God permitting, we will do so. It is impossible for those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, who have shared in the Holy Spirit, who have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the coming age, if they fall away, to be brought back to repentance, because to their loss they are crucifying the Son of God all over again and subjecting him to public disgrace. Land that drinks in the rain often falling on it and that produces a crop useful to those for whom it is farmed receives the blessing of God. But land that produces thorns and thistles is worthless and is in danger of being cursed. In the end it will be burned. Even though we speak like this, dear friends, we are confident of better things in your case—things that accompany salvation. God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them. We want each of you to show this same diligence to the very end, in order to make your hope sure. We do not want you to become lazy, but to imitate those who through faith and patience inherit what has been promised." (Hebrews 5:11-6-12)

Dear David,Thank you again for your teachings on the application of the "Way of Holiness" in our lives through the Revelations, they are very inspiring. Dear David,
What about we oldies and others who find it painful to kneel? We knelt as long as we could, but then after a few broken bones, it became impossible when the arthritis set in. Also those other poor folk who have to stay put and can't move.
Thanks again for your food for the soul week by week.

Dear David,
"Yes, the harvest in this parable is about fruit, not gifts."
Your lesson is very enlightening, it brought me to the understanding that we are the seeds sown by God and within our seed there is a spark of light, called "life force or energy." God has given us this "gift of life" so we may grow and bring forth the "Fruits of the Spirit" (Galatians 5:22-25) and thank you for reminding me, "we all have equal opportunity to develop the ‘Fruit of the Spirit’ in our lives! Yes, it is the development of the Fruit of the Spirit in our life that brings us to maturity, that determines of the size of our spiritual harvest. It is through the development of the Fruit of the Spirit in our lives that we can attain a 100-fold crop, the picture of holiness. And they all said,"Amen."

2. Why did Saint Andrew become the patron of Scotland?
St Andrew- Saint of Scotland
http://www.catholic-forum.com/saints/sainta12.htm
There are several explanations for why Andrew became the patron of Scotland.
In 345, Emperor Constantine the Great decided to translate Andrew's bones from Patras to Constantinople.
Saint Regulus was instructed by an angel to take many of these relics to the far northwest. He was eventually told to stop on the Fife coast of Scotland, where he founded the settlement of Saint Andrew.
Fife (fºf). A region of eastern Scotland between the Firths of Forth and Tay. It was once a Pict kingdom.
Pict (p¹kt) n. One of an ancient people of northern Britain. They remained undefeated by the Romans and in the ninth century joined with the Scots to form a kingdom later to become Scotland. [From Middle English Pictes, Picts, from Late Latin Pictº, from Latin pictº, pl. of pictus, painted. See PICTURE.]
In the 7th century, Saint Wilfrid brought some of the saint's relics with him after a pilgrimage to Rome. The Scots king, Angus MacFergus, installed them at Saint Andrew's to enhance the prestige of the new diocese.
When the Pictish King Angus faced a large invading army, he prayed for guidance. A white cloud in the form of a saltire cross floated across the blue sky above him. Angus won a decisive victory, and decreed that Andrew would be the patron saint of his country. Following Robert Bruce's victory at the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314, the Declaration of Arbroath officially named Saint Andrew the patron saint of Scotland. The Saltire became the national flag of Scotland in 1385.
Readings:
After Andrew had stayed with Jesus and had learned much from him, he did not keep this treasure to himself, but hastened to share it with his brother Peter. Notice what Andrew said to him: "We have found the Messiah, that is to say, the Christ." Notice how his words reveal what he has learned in so short a time. They show the power of the master who has convinced them of this truth. Andrew's words reveal a soul waiting with the utmost longing for the coming of the Messiah, looking forward to his appearing from heaven, rejoicing when he does appear, and hastening to announce to great an event to others. To support one another in the things of the spirit is the true sign of good will between brothers, loving kinship and sincere affection.

THE DREAM - HOLINESS AND FRUIT
The Lord speaks to us in many ways, the most frequent being through Scripture.
Occasionally though, He will use a dream. As this doesn't happen very often to me, it is something special. Particularly as I don't normally remember them! Only when they are from the Lord!
This dream had a real application to our walk of holiness, hence why I have included it. Something a little different!

425. I BEG YOUR PARDON
And Jesus said unto the Seminary's Advanced Theology Class, "And whom do you say that I am?"
They replied, "You are the eschatological manifestation of the ground of our being, the ontological foundation of the context of our very selfhood revealed."
And Jesus replied, "I beg your pardon!"
424. EVE AND ADAM
One day, Eve was walking in the garden with the Lord. She said, "Lord, the garden is wonderful, and the animals and birds provide such joy, but I am still lonely sometimes."
"No problem!" the Lord replied. "I will make you a man for a companion. He will desire to please you and to be with you. But I have to warn you, he won't be perfect. He'll have a difficult time understanding your feelings, will tend to think only of himself, and will stay out late with his bowling buddies."
"What's bowling?" Eve asked.
"Oh... never mind. I was just getting ahead of myself, sorry."
"That's OK. I think I can handle this 'man'," Eve replied.
"Great, I'll get right to it!" God said, and started grabbing some mud and shaping it.
Suddenly, the Lord stopped and said to Eve, "Oh, there's one other thing about this man I'm making for you."
"What's that?" asked Eve.
"You'll have to tell him he was here first."

BRIGHTEN YOUR MONDAY
SOUTHERN NAMING TECHNIQUEAn Arkansas woman is in the welfare office filling out forms. The welfare officer asks her how many children she has?
"Ten boys."
"And their names?"
"Leroy, Leroy, Leroy, Leroy, Leroy, Leroy, Leroy, Leroy, Leroy, and Leroy."
"All named Leroy? Why would you name them all Leroy?"
"That way, when I wants them all to come in from the yard, I just yells 'LEROY!', and when I wants them all to come to dinner, I just yells 'LEROY!'"
"What if you just want a particular one of them to do something?"
"Then I calls him by his last name."
EXPENSIVE

Seven million of these were antiques; the rest were college students.
THE DREAM
The school of agriculture's dean of admissions was inter- viewing a prospective student, "Why have you chosen this career?" he asked.
"I dream of making a million dollars in farming, like my father," the student replied.
"Your father made a million dollars in farming?" echoed the dean much impressed.
"No," replied the applicant. "But he always dreamed of it."

MANNERS AND CUSTOMS IN BIBLICAL LANDS
ON THE MOVEAs nomads in Bible times were constantly on the move, their furnishings consisted of bare necessities only. Rugs covered the ground while bedding was only brought out at night. The people lay on mats or carpets and kept themselves warm with a covering of the outer garments worn during the day. They carried bags of grain plus a handmill and mortar with which to pound it. Skin bags or bottles holding water and other liquids hung from the tent poles. You would also find a leather bucket to draw up water from wells, an earthen pitcher used by the women to carry water, plus a few pots, kettles and pans.
Food was served on mats, platters or larger dishes and there would be cups for drinking from. Only some tents would have a primitive lamp for night use. If the family owned a camel, the camelbags and saddle would be utilised as seats.

MEGASHIFT (Part 2)
When millions of ordinary people do extraordinary thingsThe Charismatic Evangelical movement, currently numbering 707 million people around the world, is growing by 8 percent per year. That alone is exciting. The centre of this movement, though, is a mostly unknown and little-understood movement of 100 million Christians who have no building and neither pastor nor programme. "A church without vertical hierarchies," says Rutz, "which will change the future." They have experienced what Rutz calls a 'lifestyle upgrade':
Lifestyle upgrade
Anyone who uses computer software knows what an upgrade is: a new and better version of a programme replaces the old version. Through an act of God, many millions of people have experienced an 'inner upgrade' leading to an entirely new quality of life. Rutz lists a number of changes and advantages offered by this upgrade, which were previously unthinkable for many people:
People experience release from the limitations and burdens of a traditional, hierarchical (and unbiblical) religious system, being freed into an 'open Christianity' with 100% participation.
They are no longer a number in someone else's religious programme.
They experience personal empowerment and are able to do things they previously could not even have dreamed of, including the supernatural (healing, prophesying, performing miracles etc.)
They learn to overcome their own problems, and help others to overcome theirs.
They experience fellowship with a small group of close friends who give mutual support, so that each person and the whole group reaches God's aims, which are their calling.
In doing so, they find that which they have sought for their whole life.
Away from spectator religion
The path away from spectator religion frees people from fixed church role-playing. Previously, many people were passive, conformist churchgoers, experiencing church as a television without a remote control. The personal involvement of every follower of Christ, though, rouses millions of talents and abilities to solve even the most difficult problems. The result is a 'Megashift', a quantum leap in church history.
