CHRISTIANITY - A CULTURE, ORGANISATION, OR A RELATIONSHIP?
Last week we looked at the history of the church and saw how the spiritual gifts of Ephesians 4.....11 So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, 12 to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. (Ephesians 4:11-13)
..... were gradually lost in the early church, then progressively restored through the the Reformation and the return of the Holy Spirit in power, from the beginning of the last century. However, we also saw how, once those with the new revelations died, their followers turned their revelations into a religious denomination, effectively going back to the priesthood of the Old Testament. But Jesus came bringing a direct relationship with His followers. Paul warns us against being encompassed by this human religious character or spirit.....
8 See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ. (Colossians 2:8)
Of course, it is easy to criticize, but the real question is 'what do we do about it?' That is the challenge that we as God's disciples face today. Over the next 12 weeks we will look at practical ways God is calling His church, you and me, and the body corporate, to change today. These are taken from my publication A REVELATION OF……. GOD'S CALL TO HIS CHURCH, published 10 years ago. Let's get into it!
1: FROM MARTHA TO MARY
Since the visit of a family member a couple of weeks ago, I have been thinking! Always dangerous! For within our families we see and we analyse, and know our relatives do the same with us! This visit caused me to ponder upon an attitudinal principle that has separated people from the days of Mary and Martha, onward. What started as thinking turned into revelation!
At the Home of Martha and Mary
38 As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. 39 She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. 40 But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!†41 “Martha, Martha,†the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, 42 but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.†(Luke 10:38-42)
Martha was ruled by her mind. She saw the work to be done, the meal to be prepared and the house to be tidied. Mary, on the other hand, preferred to absorb all that Jesus had to teach and impart.
I have seen this paralleled in my own family line, starting 2 generations ago (as far back as I can go) with two sisters who were both committed Christians. One was efficient and organising; the other, a little out of line from normal expectations, but through whom the glow of the Holy Spirit shone. Within our family, some were attracted to my Grandmother some to my Great Aunt. These differing natures have continued down through the generations.
Of most interest to me though, is the influence my various family members have had within the church. For it is the 'Marthas' who have been the elders, deacons and leaders, while the 'Marys' have been tolerated, being regarded as 'a little strange', for they haven't slotted well into the accepted 'church system'. You may guess into which category I fall!
Looking at the worldwide church, irrespective of culture, it's easy to see that the 'Marthas' run it. Those interested in organisation, programmes, buildings, and, dare I mention it, position!
Yet, it is also apparent, that revivals down through the ages have arisen out of the intercession and inspiration of Marys', not the organisational skills of Marthas. God has always used the most unusual, unexpected people to further His work.
One example is particularly appropriate at the present time, for 2016 is the 110th anniversary of the Azusa Street revival and the founding of Pentecostalism. God used William Seymour, a 34 year old, one eyed (literally - and spiritually!) black man, the son of ex slaves, to spark the revival. He learned about the Bible from the hallways of Charles Parnham's (another Mary misfit) Bible school, because of segregation. Yet through his devotion to the Lord, the Lord used him to trigger the most influential spiritual movement of the 20th century. The organised, religious, Martha church hated him and did all in their power to stop him.
Yet God is greater than the church! That bears repeating. God is greater than the church! His will, will be done! In fact, the church is His, and delegated to the control of Jesus. And, like it or not, it is through the Marys' of the world that He works in it.
18 I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, 19 and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of his mighty strength, 20 which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, 21 far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. 22 And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, 23 which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way. (Ephesians 1:18-23)
Today God is calling out a new generation of Marys. A generation of people fully sold out to Jesus. A generation prepared to lay down everything for their Savior and Lord. For it is this Mary generation that will arise from the depths of criticism and ridicule within the church to usher in the return of the Lord.
Are you a Martha or a Mary? It is never too late to change!
PRINCIPLE 1: God is calling out to Himself today a 'Mary church'.
DAVID'S DOUBTS "Maybe God, we can organise a seminar then, on how to become a Mary?" "No David, for I am roaming the earth searching out those whose hearts are truly towards me. Seek me with all your hearts, my sons and my daughters, as did Mary. Then I can, and will, use you to change the world."
FROM THE WORD
THE WORDS OF JESUSMay we hear what the Lord is saying to us.
The Rich Man and the Beggar Lazarus (Luke 16:19-31)
Jesus continued.
“Once there was a man who was rich. He wore purple clothes and fine linen, and enjoyed a luxurious life. A beggar named Lazarus used to sit at his gate, covered in sores, longing to eat the leftovers from the rich man’s table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores.
“Then the beggar died, and angels carried him away to be with Abraham. The rich man also died and was buried. In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham in the far distance, with Lazarus beside him.
“‘Father Abraham,’ he called out, ‘Have mercy on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I’m burning in agony.’
“But Abraham replied, ‘My son, remember that you enjoyed the good things of life, while Lazarus had a very poor life. Now he is here being comforted, while you suffer in torment. Apart from that, there’s a great gulf stretches between us and you. Nobody who wants to cross from here to you can do so, and nobody can cross from there over to us.’
“The rich man said, ‘Then Father, I beg you, please send him to my father’s house. For I have five brothers and he can warn them so that they don’t end up here in this place of torment.’
“But Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the prophets. They should listen to them.’
“‘No, father Abraham,’ said the man. ‘But they would repent if someone went to them from the dead!’
“Abraham said to him, ‘If they won’t listen to Moses and the prophets, they won’t be convinced even if someone returns from the dead.’â€
Instructions to the Disciples (Luke 17:1-10)
Jesus taught them.
“Temptations are unavoidable, but it will be a disaster for those through whom they come! For such people it would be better to have a millstone hung around the neck and thrown into the sea than to cause these little ones to sin. So take care what you do. If your brother sins, warn him; and if he repents, forgive him. Even if he sins against you seven times a day, and seven times comes back and tells you, ‘I’m really sorry,’ forgive him.â€
The disciples asked for more trust.
“Even if your trust was as small as a mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, ‘Uproot yourself, and plant yourself in the sea,’ and it would obey you.
“Say you have a servant who does plowing or shepherding. When he comes in from work, do you say to
him, ‘Come in and sit down now for a meal’? No. You say to him, ‘Prepare a meal for me, get yourself dressed, and serve me until I’ve finished my meal. After that you can have your meal’? And do you thank the servant for doing what you told him? No. Likewise once you’ve done everything you were told, you should simply say, ‘We are undeserving servants. We just did our duty.’â€

272. THREE WISE WOMEN
Do you know what would have happened if it had been Three Wise Women instead of Three Wise Men?
* They would have asked directions,
* arrived on time,
* helped deliver the baby,
* cleaned the stable,
* made a casserole, and,
* brought practical gifts.
271. DO YOU LIVE HERE?
Father Delany was walking home after his sermon late one night when he came upon this intoxicated tramp on the sidewalk. Wanting to help, he asked the man, "Do you live here?"
"Yesh," the man slowly replied.
"Would you like me to help you upstairs?" the father asked.
"Yesh," the man slowly sputtered.
When they got up on the second floor he asked, "Is this your floor?"
"Yesh," again the man replied.
Then Father Delany got to thinking that maybe he didn't want to face the man's irate wife because she may think he was the one who got the man drunk. So, he opened the first door he came to and shoved him through it, then went back downstairs.
But lo and behold when he went back outside, there was another Tramp lying on the sidewalk. So he asked that man "Do you live here?"
"Yesh."
"Would you like me to help you upstairs?"
"Yesh."
So he did and put him in the same door with the first Tramp. Then went back downstairs, where, to his surprise, there was another tramp.
So he started over to him. But before he got to him, the tramp staggered over to a policeman and cried, "For God's sake, offisher, protect me from thish man. He'sh been doing nothing all night long but takin' me upstairsh and throwing me down the elevator shaft!"
270. WHO ARE YOU?
A certain little girl, when asked her name, would reply, "I'm Mr. Sugarbrown's daughter."
Her mother told her this was wrong, she must say, "I'm Jane Sugarbrown."
The Pastor spoke to her in Sunday School, and said, "Aren't you Mr. Sugarbrown's daughter?"
She replied, "I thought I was, but mother says I'm not."

31. BE SURE YOUR SINS WILL CATCH YOU OUT!For the second time in a row, I was forced to impose on the woman with whom I carpooled to our children's soccer practices. I phoned and explained that my husband had the car again, so I wouldn't be able to take my turn.
A few minutes before she was due to pick up my son, my husband showed up. Since it was too late for me to call and say I could drive after all, I asked my husband to hide the car in the garage and to stay inside. I also explained to my son that he shouldn't mention anything about his father's whereabouts.
Unfortunately, my husband forgot and was in front of our house chatting with a friend when my carpool partner arrived. When my son returned from practice, I asked him if she had noticed.
"Yes," he replied, "she asked me which of the two men in front of the house was my father. But don't worry. I told her I didn't know."
32. CREAM DE LA CREAM!
During a dinner party, the hosts' two little children entered the dining room totally nude and walked slowly around the table.
The parents were so embarrassed that they pretended nothing was happening and kept the conversation going. The guests cooperated and also continued as if nothing extraordinary was happening.
After going all the way around the room, the children left, and there was a moment of silence at the table, during which one child was heard to say, "You see, it IS vanishing cream!"
33. ITS ALL IN THE WAY YOU SAY IT
I noticed the neighbor down the street was home every day, so after a few weeks I asked him what was going on.
He replied, "I left my job because of illness and fatigue."
A few weeks later, his wife gave me the real truth of what happened. Turns out my neighbor's boss got sick and tired of him.
34. HEALTH CLUB MEMBERSHIP
Some members of a health club were having their first meeting. The director of the group said, "Now, I'd like each of you to give the facts of your daily routine."
Several people spoke, admitting their excesses, and then one obviously overweight members said, "I eat moderately, I drink moderately, and I exercise frequently."
"Hmm?" said the manager. "And are you sure you having nothing else to add?"
"Well, yes," said the member. "I lie extensively."

2015 Deadliest Year for Christians Worldwide, Open Doors' World Watch List Finds
The Christian persecution watchdog group Open Doors has released its annual list of countries where Christians face the greatest persecution and found that it has reached unprecedented levels worldwide as over 7,000 Christians were killed for their faith between Nov. 1, 2014, and Oct. 31, 2015.Although the California-based ministry, which works in over 60 countries, stated last January that 2014 was the worst year for Christian persecution than any other time in modern history, the organization said during the rollout of its 2016 World Watch List that 2015 surpassed 2014 as the deadliest year for Christians worldwide.
Open Doors found that over 3,000 more Christians were killed for faith-related reasons during its reporting period for the 2016 World Watch List than it found during the reporting period for the 2015 report. Additionally, over 2,400 churches were attacked, damaged or destroyed during the reporting period, which is more than double the number from last year.
"The 2016 World Watch List documents an unprecedented escalation of violence against Christians, making this past year the most violent and sustained attack on Christian faith in modern history," Open Doors CEO David Curry explained at a Wednesday press conference introducing the report. "This research has concluded that after the brutal persecution of Christians in 2014, 2015 proved to be even worse with the persecution continuing to increase, intensify and spread across the globe."
For the 14th consecutive year, North Korea was listed at No. 1 on the World Watch List, again making it the greatest persecutor of Christians in the world with a persecution rating of 92 out of 100. As the Kim regime continues its intolerance toward religion, between 50,000 to 70,000 Christians are suffering in regime labor camps.
While pariah states like North Korea, Sudan (No. 8) and Eritrea (No. 3) continue to stomp on the religious freedoms of Christians and others, the dramatic rise in the amount of persecution against Christians is in part due to the rise of Islamic extremist groups like the Islamic State, Boko Haram and Al-Shabaab.
As IS continues to have a stronghold on much of the historically-Christian Nineveh province in northern Iraq, Iraq is listed at No. 2 on the list.
With the emergence of the IS, thousands of Christians have been forced to flee their homes and villages or risk being killed for their love of Christ. Due to the mass exodus of Christians, the research finds that Christianity is "on the verge of extinction" from Iraq, a place where Christians have lived for two millennia.
Considering that IS also has control of chunks of Syria, Open Doors lists Syria at No. 5 on the list.
"Islamic extremist caliphates are solidified and expanding," Curry said. "The data shows that the Islamic State caliphate has effectively carried out genocide against Yazidis and Christians in Syria and Iraq, pushing hundreds of thousands of Christians into refugee camps in North Iraq and other countries."
Although IS gets most of the global media attention for its barbarity, Curry explained that it is the Boko Haram terrorist group in Nigeria (No. 12) that has killed more Christians in 2015 than any other terrorist group.
"Boko Haram in Nigeria threatened to control large parts of Nigeria, it does control large parts of Nigeria and its extending its territory into Niger and looking into Chad, as well," Curry said.
Another terrorist outfit that has contributed to the high death toll in Open Doors' 2016 report, is Somalia-based al-Qaeda affiliate Al-Shabaab, who last April attacked Garissa University in Kenya (No. 16) and massacred about 147 Christians.
Pakistan (No. 6) rose to its highest levels of persecution ever. According to a fact sheet provided by Open Doors, Pakistan and Nigeria are the two countries where the "most intensive violence against Christians took place."
Pakistan's blasphemy and apostasy laws are often used to lynch and imprison Christians and religious minorities, while the justice system typically does little to hold perpetrators accountable. Saudi Arabia (No. 14) and Egypt (No. 22) also have a history of using blasphemy and apostasy laws to persecute religious minorities.
"Religious freedom is threatened by the impact of blasphemy laws or apostasy laws in countries including Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Sudan and in a number of others as well as laws that purport to protect religious sentiments from offense," David Saperstein, U.S. State Department's Ambassador at-large for International Religious Freedom, said at the press conference.
"They are too often used by individuals to justify violence in the name of religion or as a false pretense for which they seek to settle personal grievances," Saperstein continued. "When governments stand by such actions, such laws create an atmosphere of impunity for those individuals or societal groups who resort to violence and helps explain the numbers of death that have been alluded to in this report."
Saperstein, who is a rabbi and was nominated to his position by President Barack Obama in 2014, praised the Open Doors report as being "vital" to the defense of religious liberty worldwide.
"[The World Watch List] is an important guide for those of us in government to understand the current situation facing Christians around the world and highlights the specific abuses that they suffer and helps us in promoting accountability for governments and societal actors who engage in persecution," Saperstein said. "Reports like this are vital to advancing our shared goal of protecting religious freedom around the globe."

A REVELATION OF……. THE 3 PRIESTHOODSAs we go through this study, my desire is that we will all grasp a little of the majesty and wonder of the plan of God to reconcile you and me back to Himself, after the fall of Adam and Eve to the wiles of satan through the serpent, in the garden of Eden.
As God is pure and we are not, He can only be approached through a mediator, a priest.
This study is about the establishment and development of the priesthood from the earliest of times until today.
I trust that we will all grasp the essence and magnificence of God’s perfect plan for each one who believes back into relationship with Him.

WAXING LYRICAL
Just thinking that I haven't written a poem for quite a while so maybe will have a go now - before I forget how!DAVID'S RAMBLINGS
Don't know what to write about.
Something that will have clout.
Should it be all about me?
No! Well - how about thee?
That might be interesting for we all like to hear about ourself,
Particularly it is nice and complementary, off the top shelf.
But the problem is that I don't know you personally, do you see,
So what can I say about you, not knowing if you're she or he!
Time is moving on,
Nearly time it is for bed,
The day is now gone,
The seconds, each has sped.
So what can I say that is of great note?
Before I have to leave, put on my coat.
Go out into the night and wend my way home,
In the darkness, to our wee abode to roam.
My wife Kathy, now she is not there.
Visiting her mother, do not despair,
She will be home tomorrow, I am so sure,
Returning from her travelling adventure.
So now I will go and cuddle the cat.
Oops - recall I can't now do that,
For she died some weeks ago - very sad.
So I'm all by myself; that's very bad.
But no, no, no! I do now remember!
Whether it be April or September,
I have my Jesus with me always you see,
So I wont be lonely, there's He and me.
I hope now, that's true for you too.
In the bed - even when on the loo!
He is a friend upon whom we all can rely,
When you are lonely, give Jesus a try.

A DAVID MUSING
Kathy and I survived our 3 days in Taihape - really enjoying the break. In this typical country town of 1500 friendly people, we saw the sights , read books, and on the way home, met with 3 groups of relatives and friends. A great break! In fact a Christmas - New Year break which Kathy and I have really enjoyed together.
This week, Kathy is back to her regular work routine while I will return to getting my publications in a form suitable for listing on Amazon and other sites, for wider distribution, still free of charge, as the Lord has always instructed, but which many fail to understand.
If we were always on holiday, it would no longer be a holiday!
So until next week.....
