IN CONTEXT AND TIME

THE BIBLE: 66 books by 40+ authors, written over 1500 years, comprising, (in the King James Version) 31,173 verses, totalling 773,692 words made up of 3,566,480 letters! In spite of its variety and size, it is an amazingly cohesive book, IF ONLY.......

If only it is read as a whole! If not, because of its diversity and volume, it can be used, or rather, misused, to 'prove' almost any proposition one can come up with!

One of the biggest causes of division in the Church today comes from those majoring on one piece, a verse, or even worse, a few words of scripture, to justify a 'spiritual' stand on almost any subject under the sun. A practice certainly not of the Son!

Too, one of the amazing things about Jesus was His understanding of Scripture. The teachers of the day were astonished! From a young boy onwards, Jesus had sufficient understanding to answer all the tricky questions that were thrown at Him. How? He did have an advantage, of course, in that He was 'the (living) Word.' However, along with His contemporaries, Jesus had to study all, and memorise much of the Old Testament. He was grounded in the Word. And we are to be the same.

Today however, we glibly quote a few words from here, and a few from there, completely out of context, in order to 'prove' our latest pet theory. Let's take an extreme example. ('I am' being facetious!) Did you know that the Bible is really all about me? For 1036 times it says, "I am". So it must be all about me! Yet we (should) know that the true "I am" in the Bible is God Himself. What an amazing description of the person of God. "I am", in the past, "I am" now, and "I am" He will always be! Forever past, now, and forever more, "I am"! So the important 'I am' of my Bible is not about 'me', but my heavenly Father. He is the true focus of the Bible! And there are lots of word plays on this theme, particularly by Jesus. The Jews would have understood - and been horrified.

Another common error is to quote Old Testament principles that have been superseded by the New. One classic concerns the meat we eat. When Peter got his vision of all animals being good to eat, he had a real struggle to accept it, as did most of his fellow Jews. It was a huge change to their way of thinking.

In summary, the Old Testament measures success by 'physical prosperity', highlighted by the reign of Solomon in the Promised Land of Israel. New Testament success, on the other hand, reverses this, teaching 'spiritual sacrifice'. Building spiritual treasure in Heaven. Highlighted of course, by the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus on the cross. Through His spiritual inheritance, until He returns in the physical, He is be seated at the right hand of God. Upon His return the physical kingdom will be restored. How confused we get by not understanding the overall picture and process of God.

Of course, I love the Old Testament, but always have to remember that it's ultimate purpose was to prepare the way, to point to the New Covenant of Jesus. Otherwise I would be best to convert to Judaism, as some do, when captivated by the Old.

Can I encourage us today to get deeper into ALL the Word, not just our favourite selections. To understand the 'big picture'. Practically speaking, in order to 'prove' something using Scripture, finding confirming scriptures to back up our argument. Scriptures taken in context of the time and situation to which they relate. Not selecting isolated verses (simply a relatively recent, helpful reference system, not part of the original manuscripts) or phrases, without relating the context in which they were written, and to other, confirming Scripture.

Often today, Christians quoted by the media complain of being misquoted, or having their remarks taken out of context. Surely the Bible's authors would have the same grizzle with us!

Now David, wouldn't it be nice to inherit King Solomon's wealth? But wait! What happened to Solomon? Well, better stick with heavenly riches I can enjoy forever. A much better deal!

FROM THE WORD

"Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what shall I tell them?” God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’”" (Exodus 3:13-14)

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning." (John 1:1-2)

"About noon the following day as they were on their journey and approaching the city, Peter went up on the roof to pray. He became hungry and wanted something to eat, and while the meal was being prepared, he fell into a trance. He saw heaven opened and something like a large sheet being let down to earth by its four corners. It contained all kinds of four-footed animals, as well as reptiles of the earth and birds of the air. Then a voice told him, “Get up, Peter. Kill and eat.” “Surely not, Lord!” Peter replied. “I have never eaten anything impure or unclean.” The voice spoke to him a second time, “Do not call anything impure that God has made clean.” This happened three times, and immediately the sheet was taken back to heaven. While Peter was wondering about the meaning of the vision, the men sent by Cornelius found out where Simon’s house was and stopped at the gate. They called out, asking if Simon who was known as Peter was staying there. While Peter was still thinking about the vision, the Spirit said to him, “Simon, three men are looking for you." (Acts 10:9-19)

"Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God,
did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing,
taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death — even death on a cross! Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father." (Philippians 2:5-11)

"Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory." (Colossians 3:1-4)

DAVID'S DOODLINGS

8. A foolish man speaks before he thinks, a wise man thinks before he speaks, but a godly man lets his life speak for him.

9. The foolish man is satisfied with reading the Word, a wise man follows the Word, but the godly man is as one with the Word.

27. Our most dearly held beliefs often inhibit God’s further revelation to us.

34. It’s easy to be wise in theory, but a lot more difficult in practise!

104. ‘Earthly Success’ is based upon achievement, ‘Godly Success’ upon relationship.

105. ‘To be, not to do, that is the answer.’ (with apologies to Shakespeare)

106. God desires our ‘being’ much more than our ‘doing’.

107. God prefers ‘ones self’ to ‘ones works’.

CRANWELL'S CARTOON

13 So Daniel was brought before the king, and the king said to him,
“Are you Daniel, one of the exiles my father the king brought from
Judah? 14 I have heard that the spirit of the gods is in you and
that you have insight, intelligence and outstanding wisdom. 15 The
wise men and enchanters were brought before me to read this writing
and tell me what it means, but they could not explain it. 16 Now I
have heard that you are able to give interpretations and to solve
difficult problems. If you can read this writing and tell me what
it means, you will be clothed in purple and have a gold chain placed
around your neck, and you will be made the third highest ruler in the
kingdom.” 17 Then Daniel answered the king, “You may keep your gifts
for yourself and give your rewards to someone else. Nevertheless, I
will read the writing for the king and tell him what it means. 18 “O
king, the Most High God gave your father Nebuchadnezzar sovereignty
and greatness and glory and splendor. 19 Because of the high position
he gave him, all the peoples and nations and men of every language
dreaded and feared him. Those the king wanted to put to death, he put
to death; those he wanted to spare, he spared; those he wanted to
promote, he promoted; and those he wanted to humble, he humbled. 20
But when his heart became arrogant and hardened with pride, he was
deposed from his royal throne and stripped of his glory. 21 He was
driven away from people and given the mind of an animal; he lived
with the wild donkeys and ate grass like cattle; and his body was
drenched with the dew of heaven, until he acknowledged that the Most
High God is sovereign over the kingdoms of men and sets over them
anyone he wishes. 22 “But you his son, O Belshazzar, have not humbled
yourself, though you knew all this. 23 Instead, you have set yourself
up against the Lord of heaven. You had the goblets from his temple
brought to you, and you and your nobles, your wives and your concubines drank wine from them. You praised the gods of silver and gold, of bronze, iron, wood and stone, which cannot see or hear or understand. But you did not honor the God who holds in his hand your life and all your ways. 24 Therefore he sent the hand that wrote the inscription. 25 “This is the inscription that was written:

MENE, MENE, TEKEL, PARSIN

26 “This is what these words mean:

Mene: God has numbered the days of your reign and brought it to an end. 27 Tekel: You have been weighed on the scales and found wanting. 28 Peres: Your kingdom is divided and given to the Medes and Persians.” 29 Then at Belshazzar’s command, Daniel was clothed in purple, a gold chain was placed around his neck, and he was proclaimed the third highest ruler in the kingdom. (Daniel 5:13-29)

David and Kathy
As a grandmother of 27 years' standing I think I have the right to say that grandchildren are absolutely the crown of life and, of course, every single one of them is the most beautiful baby in the whole world and in the whole history of mankind or indeed, of any kind!

God's blessings and riches to both the grandparents and to the parents and may Charis and Nathan grow up to be filled with the Holy Spirit and full of fun and health.

Shirley C
PS Only a man could have omitted to let us know the weight of his new grandchildren, the colour of their hair etc etc! We women need all the details please! Not really a criticism, more a plea for the important details.

Blessings,
Shirley C

Dear Dave and Kathy,
First the Blessings ... Something promoting or contributing to happiness, well-being, or prosperity and

then the Congratulations.... The act of expressing joy or acknowledgment, as for the achievement or good fortune of another.

Both of these salutations are for two wonderful grandparents who are continuously touching the hearts of many around this wonderful world. A world that God keeps creating constantly for us to enjoy. The birth of your new grandchildren Charis and Nathan are the "proof in the pudding" of the happiness and the joy we all harvest in your ( the Tait)'s vineyard. You two have sown some precious seeds in your garden for your harvest is full with an abundance of blessings. Thank you for sharing them with us. God bless you and the family...

With love and kindness,

TUESDAY TEACHINGS

THE PROPHETIC FEASTS OF THE LORD - Series 2 - THE AUTUMN FEASTS
Part 1 of 10 - THE PATTERN OF THINGS TO COME

Following on from our first series on the Spring Feasts, the pattern of things past, we now come to look at the more exciting Autumn Feasts, the culmination of the Jewish Religious Year and the pattern of things to come.

Of course, our study is slightly more speculative, as we are dealing with the future rather than the past. For God always has the habit of coming up with some twists and turns that we don't predict or fully understand until after they have happened.

Notwithstanding this, the principles of God's plan for his end time church are set out in broad principle in the Autumn Feasts, as was the role of Jesus in Passover and the Holy Spirit in Pentecost.

It is the responsibility of us all to understand and apply the lessons of the Autumn Feasts to our lives and the church today.

Check it out in your letterbox tomorrow. If you aren't on the mailing list, you can register now at... tteach-on@wwj.org.nz

373. TOUCHE!
Melba was a Christian lady who did a lot of traveling for her business. Flying made her nervous so she always took her Bible along, because reading it relaxed her.

One time Melba was sitting next to a man. When he saw Melba reading her Bible he chuckled and said, "You don't really believe all that stuff in there do you?"

Melba replied "Of course I do. It is the word of God."

"Well what about that guy who was swallowed by that whale? You don't believe that, do you?" the man asked.

Melba smiled. "You mean Jonah? Of course I believe it. God doesn't tell fairy tales."

The fellow snorted and asked "Well, how do you suppose he survived all that time inside the whale?"

Melba said "Well I don't really know. I guess when I get to heaven I will ask Jonah."

"What if Jonah isn't in heaven?" the man asked sarcastically.

"Then you can ask him." Melba replied quietly.

FACTS FOR FUN

LAST WEEKS QUESTION: In Greek tragedies, what is the difference between "hubris" and "hamartia"?

ANSWER: "Hamartia" is the one fatal flaw that brings a good character to his ruin. The classic example of hamartia is "hubris," that is pride.

THIS WEEK'S QUESTION: Was Napoleon only five feet two inches tall? Did he lie about his height?

Answer Next Week.

SOME FUN FACTS

672. A LOVE AFFAIR
The cuddly, Australian koala bear is easily satisfied. It is so adapted to the eucalyptus tree that it doesn't need anything else, not even water, to live. (How it ‘bears’ to eat these tough, highly unpalatable leaves and still remain cuddly, I don’t know.)

673. 'DEATHDAY'
Winston Churchill, Prime Minister of England during World War II, and again later, superstitiously feared January 24 because he was certain it was destined to be the day of his death. His father had died on that date. Churchill did indeed die on January 24, in the year 1965. (A self fulfilling prophecy?)

674. AN INSTANT SUCCESS?
No. Before winning the presidency, Lincoln ran for his state legislature, the House of Representatives, the Senate (twice!) and vice president. He lost all those elections. (If at first you don’t succeed, run for President.)

NEW PAGE HELPS CHURCH WEBSITES REACH OUT EFFECTIVELY

What happens when a church creates a website with just its members in mind? Only the members read it! But what is the result when a church has a site specifically designed to reach outsiders, in user-friendly language which connects with their lives?

“Week in, week out, more visitors turn up at our church on a Sunday because of the website, than anything else,” says one church webmaster, who uses these principles.

There are ways to build (or transform) a church site to achieve this effectiveness. See Internet Evangelism Day’s page – ‘60+ Tips for Effective Church Sites’:

This is just one of many resources available on the Internet Evangelism Day site. It also offers downloadable presentations that churches can use to create a web evangelism awareness focus day. “The Internet is a tool of amazing power for outreach,” says the Day coordinator Tony Whittaker. “But we must learn how to use it.”

JUST FOR A LAUGH

NEW RESTAURANT
An elderly couple had dinner at another couple's house, and after eating, the wives left the table and went into the kitchen.
The two gentlemen were talking, and one said, "Last night we went out to a new restaurant and it was really great. I would recommend it very highly."

The other man said, "What is the name of the restaurant?"

The first man thought and thought and finally said, "What is the name of that flower you give to someone you love? You know... the one that is red and has thorns."

"Do you mean a rose?"

"Yes," the man said. He turned toward the kitchen and yelled, "Rose, what's the name of that restaurant we went to last night?"

SHOW YOU HOW
A young man, hired by a supermarket, reported for his first day of work. The manager greeted him with a warm handshake and a smile, gave him a broom and said, "Your first job will be to sweep out the store."

"But I'm a college graduate." the young man replied indignantly.

"Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't know that," said the manager. "Here, give me the broom, I'll show you how."

BULKING UP
My grand-daddy worked in a blacksmith shop when he was a young fella, and he used to tell me, when I was a little nipper, how he had toughened himself up so he could stand the hard work of blacksmithing.

One story was how he had developed his arm and shoulder muscles. As he told it, he would stand outside behind the wood shed, with a 5-pound potato sack in each hand, extend his arms straight out from his sides and hold them there as long as he could.

After a while he tried 10-pound potato sacks, then 50-pound potato sacks and finally he got to where he could lift a 100-pound potato sack in each hand and hold his arms straight out for more than two full minutes.

Then he started putting potatoes in the sacks.

EAGLES FLY HIGH!

A BOOK REVUE……

David Tait has written an exciting and challenging book of ‘three halves’ revealing God’s desires for both His followers and His Church in the 21st Century. Firmly based upon Scripture, its unique, down to earth style will appeal to a wide range of readers from the ordinary Christian to the Biblical student.

David built Kaydees Gardens to become the largest mail order garden company in New Zealand before selling it to devote his time fully to the Lord. The ‘Walking With Jesus’ course promoted through Kaydees catalogues has helped many thousands of New Zealanders to better understand and further their walk with Jesus.

In David’s unique terms, ‘Eagles Fly High!’ is a "book of three halves."

The ‘first half’ of the book is a selection of ‘David’s Musings’ in both poetry and prose; some thoughtful, others wistful or humorous – an entertaining insight into the man behind the words!

The ‘middle half’ deals with God’s Word, revealing His master plan for both and Church. God the Father gave Moses detailed design specifications for the first church, Moses Tabernacle, on Mount Sinai, accompanied by principles of Godly living as set out in the ‘Feasts of the Lord.’ These patterns were confirmed 1500 years later in the New Testament teachings of Jesus, with the modern Church being birthed in Holy Spirit power on the Day of Pentecost, now finally to be fulfilled by the ‘Tabernacle (Apostolic) Church’ before Jesus returns as the Father’s representative to rule and reign on Earth.

The ‘third half’ of the book reveals a challenging, God-given vision of the future, both of Christian living and Church maturity. A necessary read for all who desire a deeper understanding of God’s purpose for their life, as well as Church leaders seeking an understanding of God’s direction for their Church in these difficult yet exciting times.

This is something you cannot afford to miss out on! And yes – it’s free – to download!

A KATHY MUSING

BY POPULAR REQUEST!!!

Hi Precious ones

Greetings from Aberdeen where it is warm & sunny and just lovely altogether!

Have only got a short time to write & don't have computer access at Andrew's so the essential facts are:

Charis Isla (5lbs 15oz @ birth) born 1st with Ventouse extraction easily & good Apgar score of 9.

Nathan Andrew (7lbs 6oz) needed forceps as foetal heart was decelerating and was a face presentation. A bit more battered.

Catriona managed magnificently with only mask & a bit of morphine & all 3 are doing "superbly" in the visiting midwive's words.

They are gorgeous babes & so placid. Margaret MacAskill & I are having a very happy time & Catriona feels she is able to recover more easily because of the help; so that's good. Eva has had her moments but is back to normal now C. reckons.

Catriona is almost back to normal shape and has not a stretch mark to be seen.

I love this bottle feeding! The formula is as close to breast milk as poss & the teats are no colic specials. I can be a proper Grandma & feed. Seem to bottle feed here more. In NZ we hardly see any newborns not breast fed.

HAVE TO GO AS aNDREW HAS TO GET HOME oops!

Lots & lots of love to all

Kathy

So until next week...

MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOU BLESS GOD.

His servant and yours

David Tait

Today's 'Word Puzzle' Answer: VOLLEY

TODAY'S 'DO YOU KNOW?' ANSWER: FOUR: 10 A river watering the garden flowed from Eden; from there it was separated into four headwaters. 11 The name of the first is the Pishon; it winds through the entire land of Havilah, where there is gold. 12 (The gold of that land is good; aromatic resin and onyx are also there.) 13 The name of the second river is the Gihon; it winds through the entire land of Cush. 14 The name of the third river is the Tigris; it runs along the east side of Asshur. And the fourth river is the Euphrates. (Genesis 2:10-14)
