THINKING GREEK OR HEBREW? continues
We are looking at the differences between the Jewish (Eastern) and Greek (Western) ways of thinking, so that we can better understand the ways and teachings of Jesus. (See the last 39 weeks issues of PGIM!)CONCLUSION
Today, appropriately in the 40th week, we come to the end of our discussion about the differences between Greek (Western) and Hebrew (Eastern) thinking. I trust it has made you think about some of your 'sacred cows', as it has me. Perhaps we may have sacrificed some upon the altar of ignorance and misunderstanding!
Over the past 20 years or so, the Lord has graciously given me certain inspirations and revelations of His Word. These I have had the privilege of sharing with many of you through 'Tuesday Teachings' View Tuesday Teachings here and the free downloads More Free Downloads available on the website.
Yet I have always been conscious that teachings, in themselves, can titillate the mind, but do not necessarily lead to changes in behaviour. Hence I have always tried to give accompanying practical applications and look to the Holy Spirit to reveal His will to you.
Over the years, I've wondered why I have done this. Have put it down to being a practical person who believes in 'walking the talk' in life. James rings a bell deep within me.....
22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. (James 1:22)
However, over the past 40 weeks, as we have looked at this East v West thought conundrum, I have had my mind and life challenged as I have seen more clearly what 'walking with Jesus' is truly about. It is my hope and prayer that some of this discussion will have rubbed off onto you too!
James goes on to say.....
23 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror 24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25 But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it—he will be blessed in what he does. (James 1:23-5)
In the end, true Christianity is a lifestyle of love and obedience to God's will, not merely an intellectual exercise. It is about relationship, with Jesus and others, not mere academic knowledge.
Paul sums it up succinctly.....
Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up. (1 Corinthians 8:1b)
It was true of physical blessings in the Old Testament....
13 So if you faithfully obey the commands I am giving you today—to love the LORD your God and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul— 14 then I will send rain on your land in its season, both autumn and spring rains, so that you may gather in your grain, new wine and oil. 15 I will provide grass in the fields for your cattle, and you will eat and be satisfied. (Deuteronomy 11:13-15)
and spiritual blessings in the New.
As decreed by Jesus.....
28 He replied, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it.†(Luke 11:28)
And again.....
23 Jesus replied, “If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. 24 He who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me. (John 14:23-4)
Johns sums it up.....
3 We know that we have come to know him if we obey his commands. 4 The man who says, “I know him,†but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5 But if anyone obeys his word, God’s love is truly made complete in him. This is how we know we are in him: 6 Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did. (1 John 2:3-6)
Amen.

FROM THE WORD
Listening and Doing"My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, for man’s anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires. Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you. Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it—he will be blessed in what he does. If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless. Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world." (James 1;19-27)
Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit
"“If you love me, you will obey what I command. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever— the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him.†Then Judas (not Judas Iscariot) said, “But, Lord, why do you intend to show yourself to us and not to the world?†Jesus replied, “If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. He who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me. “All this I have spoken while still with you. But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. “You heard me say, ‘I am going away and I am coming back to you.’ If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. I have told you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe. I will not speak with you much longer, for the prince of this world is coming. He has no hold on me, but the world must learn that I love the Father and that I do exactly what my Father has commanded me." “Come now; let us leave. (John 14:15-31)
"My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world. We know that we have come to know him if we obey his commands. The man who says, “I know him,†but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But if anyone obeys his word, God’s love is truly made complete in him. This is how we know we are in him: Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did. Dear friends, I am not writing you a new command but an old one, which you have had since the beginning. This old command is the message you have heard. Yet I am writing you a new command; its truth is seen in him and you, because the darkness is passing and the true light is already shining. Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates his brother is still in the darkness. Whoever loves his brother lives in the light, and there is nothing in him to make him stumble. But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness; he does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded him." (1 John 2:3-11)

FACTS FOR FUN
LAST WEEKS QUESTION: Do centipedes really have 100 legs?ANSWER: No. Until recently, no centipede was found that did not have an odd number of leg pairs. Usually the number varies from 15 to 191 pairs, all odd. No one knows why. However, Chris Kettle, a doctoral student in ecology, recently found a centipede with 48 pairs of legs, an even number. The remarkable discovery was presented to the International Congress of Myriapodology in Poland and featured in the science journal Trends in Genetics. He suspects a genetic mutation is responsible for the even number of leg pairs.

171. GOOD MORNING!
A couple drove several miles down a country road without saying a word. An earlier discussion had led to an argument, and neither wanted to concede their position.
As they passed a barnyard of mules and pigs, the wife sarcastically asked, "relatives of yours?"
"Yep," the husband replied, "In-laws."

SALT WAS THE CHIEF ECONOMIC PRODUCT.......... of the ancient world. The Hebrews used it for flavoring foods, preserving fish, curing meat, and pickling olives and vegetables. Infants were rubbed in salt before swaddling, to ensure good health. Was also seen as an antidote for tooth decay. Salt was an ingredient of the sacred anointing oil and also used in sacrifices.

Iranian lawyer imprisoned, sentenced to 9 years in Evin
Iran (MNN) ¯ Human rights watchdog Amnesty International is demanding freedom for lawyer Mohammad Ali Dadkhah. He's currently detained in Tehran's notorious Evin prison, sentenced to nine years of imprisonment."I was in a court in Tehran defending one of my clients--a jailed political activist on death row," Dadkhah told the Guardian, a UK news service, "when the judge told me that my own sentence has been approved and I will be shortly summoned to jail to serve the 9-year sentence."
It's not the first time he's been behind the bars of Evin. In 2009, Dadkhah was tortured and held in solitary confinement for the majority of his 74-day incarceration.
Ask the Lord to protect Mohammad Ali Dadkhah. Pray that the charges against him would be dropped.
"I have been convicted of acting against the national security, spreading propaganda against the regime, and keeping banned books at home," he said.
He was also banned from practicing law for the next decade. A co-founder of the Centre for Human Rights Defenders (CHRD), Dadkhah was convicted in July 2011 of charges that included "membership of an association [the CHRD] seeking the soft overthrow of the government" and "spreading propaganda against the system through interviews with foreign media." The CHRD was forcibly closed in 2008 by Iranian authorities.
Dadkhah is the fourth CHRD member to be imprisoned within the last 18 months.
"He should never have been put on trial for his legitimate human rights activities," said Ann Harrison, Deputy Middle East and North Africa Program Director at Amnesty International.
"The Iranian authorities must overturn his conviction and sentence, and release him immediately and unconditionally."
Dadkhah has defended the rights of many high-profile clients, including Pastor Youcef Nadarkhani who faced apostasy charges and a potential death sentence. With the help of Dadkhah and international pressure, Nadarkhani's case was dropped, and he returned to his family last month.
"Mohammad Ali Dadkhah and other human rights defenders should be encouraged and supported in their lawful and important work instead of being persecuted for their activism," Harrison continued.
The World Organization Against Torture (OMCT) also condemned the sentencing of Dadkhah and Iran's continual harassment of CHRD members.
"The authorities in Iran are doing their utmost to stifle human rights defenders by imposing heavy sentences of imprisonment, exile, and ban on professional practice," said Gerald Staberock, OMCT secretary general.
"All this is aimed at intimidating the whole society into a deadly silence."
In 2011, the UN Human Rights Committee expressed concern over the reported persecution of human rights defenders (HRDs) in Iran. It stated that "human rights defenders and defense lawyers often serve prison sentences based on vaguely formulated crimes such as 'mohareb' (enemy of God) or the spreading of propaganda against the establishment."
The committee recommended that all detained HRDs be released immediately. Pray that this would happen.

WAXING LYRICAL
Written over several weeks, this poem is the culmination of several months of looking and looking, and looking, for premises for another recycled clothing shop in our sister city, 20km away. Everything happens in the Lord's timing!THE BUILDING
Look, look, look,
It's all it took,
Not by the book,
Nor how to cook.
Look at one,
Yes, its done!
Too much mon,
It's no fun.
But this week?
More to seek.
Find no leak,
Must be meek.
Offer Tuesday,
Answer Friday.
Delayed Monday!
Relaxed today.
More delay,
Here stay.
Only pray.
One day!
Met landlord,
Seeming accord.
All aboard?
Monday Lord!
Contract signed!
Grateful mind.
God's kind,
We dined!
All's well,
Ring bell.
Clothes sell?
Months tell!
Thanks Lord.
Bon-accord.

Welcome aboard!

Do we really believe? This week I went to a church service where the celebrant had a medical condition. During the service the Lord said to go and offer to pray for healing after the service. So I did. The celebrant turned down my offer as their incurable condition was under reasonable control medically.
How sad. A leader of the church who, for whatever reason, has, in this instance, placed their faith in medical science ahead of faith in God to heal. I was surprised, but did not feel rejection, for I had been obedient to what the Lord had told me to do.
Don't get me wrong, I am very grateful to those doctors whose skills have healed me many times during my life. Yet, if the Lord sent someone specific to pray healing for my long term, productive cough that has foiled doctors best efforts, I would be most grateful!
In the end, do we have a faith that has power, or are we content to rely upon man's understanding? Until the church rediscovers God's power, it will continue to decline. The choice is up to you, is up to me. What will we decide?
Until next week.....
MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOU BLESS GOD
His servant and yours
