MUSINGS ON THE KINGDOM - PAST, FUTURE AND PRESENT
KINGDOM PRESENT - THE KINGDOM PARABLESAN INTRODUCTION
Last week we saw that, according to the parables, developing spiritual fruit in our lives was the key to kingdom living.
Jesus was a very practical person, understanding us better than we understand ourselves. So He also took the opportunity, through the parables, to warn us of the key areas in which we can, more likely will, go astray.
First of all, there is the logical area of living a life no, or little difference, to that which we lived before we knew Jesus. Commonly called, 'one foot in the kingdom, one in the world.' Seeking the benefits without being prepared to pay the price!
Jesus was tough on this! We will see this as we go through the parables individually. A quarter of them deal with the judgment that will come upon us if we don't bear fruit in our lives! Don't know about you, but it certainly gives me food for thought. And motivation for action too!
We live in a time when the love of Jesus is promoted, almost to the exclusion of the other side of His, and the Father's, balanced character, which is ultimately, His judgment, should we choose to continually ignore His will for us.
We need to understand that, just because we have accepted Jesus as Saviour, we are not excused from judgment. Don't believe me, believe the Word! In fact, it is repeated twice in this passage, in both verses 12 and 13.
12 And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. 13 The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what he had done. (Revelation 20:12-13)
The book of life refers to Christians. How do I know that? From verse 15.
15 If anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire. (Revelation 20:15)
So Jesus warned us both in the parables, written specifically for believers, and here in the description of Judgment Day, what would happen if we ignored His instructions to produce spiritual fruit in our lives. This warning is again confirmed in Hebrews.
26 If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, 27 but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God. 28 Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. 29 How much more severely do you think a man deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God under foot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified him, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace? 30 For we know him who said, “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,†and again, “The Lord will judge his people.†31 It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. (Hebrews 10:26-31)
Is all hopeless then? No, it is not.
If we do the will of God...
36 You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised. (Hebrews 10:36)
And again in Romans...
7 To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, he will give eternal life. (Romans 2:7)
The choice is ours.

FROM THE WORD
The Dead Are Judged"Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. Earth and sky fled from his presence, and there was no place for them. And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what he had done. Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. If anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire." (Revelation 20:11-15)
A Call to Persevere
"Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching. If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God. Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. How much more severely do you think a man deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God under foot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified him, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace? For we know him who said, “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,†and again, “The Lord will judge his people.†It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. Remember those earlier days after you had received the light, when you stood your ground in a great contest in the face of suffering. Sometimes you were publicly exposed to insult and persecution; at other times you stood side by side with those who were so treated. You sympathized with those in prison and joyfully accepted the confiscation of your property, because you knew that you yourselves had better and lasting possessions. So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded. You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised. For in just a very little while, “He who is coming will come and will not delay. But my righteous one will live by faith. And if he shrinks back, I will not be pleased with him.†But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who believe and are saved." (Hebrews 10:19-39)
God’s Righteous Judgment
"You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge the other, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things. Now we know that God’s judgment against those who do such things is based on truth. So when you, a mere man, pass judgment on them and yet do the same things, do you think you will escape God’s judgment? Or do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, tolerance and patience, not realizing that God’s kindness leads you toward repentance? But because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God’s wrath, when his righteous judgment will be revealed. God “will give to each person according to what he has done.†To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, he will give eternal life. But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and anger. There will be trouble and distress for every human being who does evil: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile; but glory, honor and peace for everyone who does good: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. For God does not show favoritism. All who sin apart from the law will also perish apart from the law, and all who sin under the law will be judged by the law. For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God’s sight, but it is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous. (Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required by the law, they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law, since they show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts now accusing, now even defending them.) This will take place on the day when God will judge men’s secrets through Jesus Christ, as my gospel declares." (Romans 2:1-16)

DAVID'S DOODLINGS
THE FEAR OF THE LORD1277. Without the fear of the Lord, youth is fearless and old age fearful.
1278. Earthly fear breeds rejection on earth, Godly fear confirms acceptance in heaven.
1279. Earthly fear results in a negative reaction while the fear of God leads to positive action.
1280. Without holy fear, surely God cannot be God?
1281. Genuine 'fear of the Lord' breeds confidence, not calamity.
1282. Fear of man leads to control by others, while self-control is the fruit of 'fear of the Lord'.
1283. 'Human fear' dominates and destroys while 'fear of God' develops character.

to the plank in your own eye? 4 How can you say to

5 You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your

142. ABRAHM AND WINDOWS 95
Avraham (Abraham) wants to upgrade his PC to Windows 95. Yitzhak (Isaac) is incredulous.
"Pop," he says, "you can't run Windows 95 on your old, slow 386. Everyone knows that you need at least a 486 with a minimum of 16 megs of memory in order to multitask effectively with Windows 95."
But Abraham, the man of faith, gazed calmly at his son and replied, "God will provide the RAM, my son."
141. HARD?
Ever wondered what it was like for Jesus at Nazareth High?
Nazareth Secondary School Term Report
Student: J. CHRIST Form: III Term: 1
SUBJECT GRADE TEACHER'S COMMENT
RELIGION (D) To the question "Who made the world?" persisted in answering
'My dad'. Claims bible originated from the same source.
ENGLISH (D+) Tends to speak and write in archaic forms and uses outmoded
figures of speech.
HISTORY (A) Excellent pupil of ancient and Religious History.
GEOGRAPHY (C-) Assignment on 'Hot, dry lands' was excellent, but shows
little interest in the rest. In geology, keeps talking
about the Rock of Ages instead of the ages of Rock.
SOCIAL STUDIES (B+) Shows keen interest in social issues.
MATHEMATICS (F) Lacks basics. Keeps muttering about 'Three in one' and 'I and
the father are one'.
GENERAL SCIENCE (D) Lacks discipline - e.g., when asked to repeat the experiment
for making hydrogen, claimed he knew a better way.
GRAPHIC COMMUNICATION
(D) Prefers to draw with a stick in the sand to pencil and paper.
CONSUMER EDUCATION (C+) Interesting ideas about alternative life style: Something about
living like sparrows and lilies of the fields...too impractical.
ART/CRAFT (B) Obviously has imagination and creativity, a good potter - likes
working with dirt and water.
MATERIAL STUDIES (A) Excellent in woodwork section. Obviously receives help and
stimulation at home.
MUSIC/DRAMA (B+) A keen member of the school choir. On occasions can be
frighteningly dramatic.
COMMUNITY (A) Keenly interested in all aspects of Living community.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION (D-) A trouble maker - e.g. during the learn-to-swim campaign insisted
on trying to walk across the pool.
HEALTH CLASSES (A) Shows a remarkable aptitude for first aid and knowledge of the
body.
CLASS TEACHER'S COMMENT: This boy has a very unhealthy tendency to form gangs. He has organized twelve of his friends into a gang and is seen constantly in the company of the children of publicans and sinners. He needs to be more selective in his choice of friends. Also, he should learn to keep his hair at a tidy length and not wear sandals with the school uniform.

FACTS FOR FUN
LAST WEEKS QUESTION: Why do we call twins who are attached to eachother physically, ‘Siamese twins’?
ANSWER: We call physically-attached twins ‘Siamese twins’ because of
a famous pair of twins in the 1800s who were actually from Siam. Chang
and Eng, brothers attached at the chest, were brought to the US by
famous circus promoter P.T. Barnum. They eventually married Sarah and
Adelaide, unattached sisters, and had 22 children between them. They
died in 1874, within hours of each other. If they had lived in the twentyfirst
century instead of the nineteenth, they most likely would have been
surgically separated. (Would they have been happier though?)
THIS WEEK'S QUESTION: Is it possible for twins to have different
fathers?
Answer Next Week.
277. MUSIC WHILE YOU DRIVE
According to a survey, 75 percent of people who play the car radio while driving also sing along with it. (Driving solo, that is!)
278. STEAK OUT
When it first opened in 1957, the Pinnacle Peak Restaurant in Scottsdale, Arizona, was a general store and rest stop for travellers heading to nearby lakes. To boost sales of his small business, the original owner decided to serve dinners at weekends. He bought six steaks, some lettuce, and pinto beans, and offered an authentic cowboy cookout. The simple cuisine was a great success. What started as a weekend experiment grew into the world’s largest western steakhouse, with seating for 1,800 people inside and outside for 2,000. (Not such good news for the local cows though!)
279. MANY MEANINGS
A 1999 survey of 25,500 standard English-language dictionary words found that 93 percent of them have been registered as .coms. (Becoming an Internet Dictionary?)

BIBLE TRIVIA (Old Testament Family Life)
SEVERAL CITIES ..........mentioned in the Old Testament were built over underground streams. eg. Medigo and Hazor. In Hazor, a woman would descend 30ft (9m) on 5 flights of stairs to the water tunnel before filling her large water jug. She needed to be strong to carry it back out. It was also a socialising time for the women.

Malaysians unite against church attacks
By Leslie LauConsultant Editor
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 10 – On a day when Christians congregate, other Malaysians, including senior Muslim leaders, joined them in a show of unity and peace, and in defiance of the spate of firebombing and vandalism of churches in recent days.
In an attempt to relegate the attacks to the fringe, Barisan Nasional (BN) and Pakatan Rakyat (PR) leaders joined Christians in worship and dialogue even as reports of more attacks streamed in.
BN and opposition politicians made unprecedented visits to churches to reassure Christian Malaysians, who have grown fearful of the attacks.
Tan Sri Koh Tsu Koon said that the government plans to hold a series of dialogues between religious leaders.
Earlier, the BN man sat next to the DAP’s Teresa Kok as they both joined the members of the Metro Tabernacle church in worship at borrowed premises in Wisma MCA here.
The church was the most seriously damaged in the attacks, with its administrative office gutted on Friday.
Also present at the service was CIMB Group CEO Datuk Seri Nazir Razak, brother of the prime minister. He presented a donation of RM100,000 on behalf of the bank to the church.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak had visited the church yesterday and described the attacks as “heinousâ€.
Other leaders like Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Datuk Zaid Ibrahim from PKR, as well as PAS spiritual leader Datuk Nik Aziz Nik Mat also visited various churches and held dialogue sessions with Christians.
“The Caliph Umar, who visited the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in 638 AD, was careful to ensure that the Muslims respect the sanctity of Christian places of worship,†said Anwar, reading from a prepared statement, before attending a dialogue at the Lutheran centre in Petaling Jaya.
According to a Reuters report, Malaysians packed churches to listen to sermons of “reaching out in friendship to all, including Muslims†and “keeping the peace in multi-religious Malaysia†but many still felt their religious rights were being trampled.
“There are extremists in this country and the government seems unable to do anything,†said Wilson Matayun, a salesman who attended Mass at St Anthony’s Church in Kuala Lumpur. “I am losing faith in our government. I pray it does not get worse.â€
Matayun is from Sabah, where a large number of non-English speaking Christians have worshipped “Allah†for decades. Christians account for 9.1 per cent of Malaysia’s 28 million population.
The attacks against churches have come amid a row over the recent High Court ruling that allowed the Catholic newspaper Herald to use “Allah†in its Bahasa Malaysia editions.
Police have been quick to point out that it has still not been ascertained if the attackers are Muslims.
Government and Muslim leaders have also taken pains to emphasise that such acts of violence were not representative of Islam.
In an effort to repair ties, six Muslim NGOs also announced today an offer to work with Rela to help protect churches from further attacks.
A church in Miri reported that a stone was flung at the building today, making it the seventh attack against a Christian institution in three days.
This is the first reported attack in East Malaysia where a large part of the population are Christians who worship in Bahasa Malaysia and also the ruling BN’s “fixed deposit†of votes and parliamentary seats in Election 2008.
Four churches in the Klang Valley were hit by petrol bombs on Friday while one was hit last night in Taiping. A Malacca church reported it was splashed with black paint while a priest in Penang had his car splashed with red paint.
A convent school in Taiping was also the target of an attempt with petrol bombs found near its guardhouse overnight. Church authorities believe it was meant for the St Louis Church next door.
The Home Ministry and senior police officers are expected to brief the press and foreign diplomats tomorrow on the attacks, which are blamed on “fringe elementsâ€.

A DAVID MUSING
Promises, promises, promises...We know all too well that in the world, 'promises are made to be broken'. It is a sad, but all too often, harsh reality.
Here at Seekers we have been promised to be given a shop in another city, by another second hand clothing merchant, for 2 years now. A very generous offer - but sadly, one that never happened. Finally, we opened our own shop there at the end of last year.
Yesterday, I finally had a call from my friend to say he was closing his shop and we could have most of the contents. A promise partially fulfilled. Other than the contents, the reduction of competition will certainly be most helpful.
With God too, we have often have to wait for promises to be fulfilled. For God's time is not our time. We are impatient people!
What I have learned though, is that the timing of God's promises being fulfilled in my life is often up to me! For God will not trust me with greater things until I am ready for them.
Instead of blaming, or pleading with, God about promises yet to be fulfilled, we will do better to ask Him what we need to do to prepare ourselves for what He has promised us. And then do it!
Like me, you too may be amazed at the results!
Until next week.......
MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOU BLESS GOD.
His servant and yours
David Tait
