AN AWAKENING
As I travel around Africa, this time particularly, I am coming to understand that there is a new awakening and desire in people's hearts to get back to the basic message of the Bible - a message of holiness and righteousness. In this amazing continent of contrasts and extremes, even in theology, there is a dissatifaction arising with the overemphasised messages of prosperity and superficial spiritual experience designed to titillate mankinds senses rather than please the heart of God.
For our 'religion' has become highly 'man-centred' - what's in it for us - rather than seeking out and rebuilding our relationship with God, which is the essence of the Scriptures.
As Africa is leading world Christianity in so many ways, my prayer is that this understanding and desire to seek out the God's desires rather than our own, will soon extend to those parts of the world where the gospel has become a tool to serve the purposes of man rather than the revelation of the only way to restore sinful man to a holy and righteous God.
Only God can do it - ut He is a God of miracles - isn't he?

FROM THE WORD
THE MYSTERY OF THE GODHEAD - WHAT IS GOD?" (5 of 6)There are 3 essential areas to understanding what God is.
GOD IS INFINITE
He knows everything! Nothing happens that He doesn't know about or allow to happen.
“Am I only a God nearby,†declares the LORD, “and not a God far away? Can anyone hide in secret places so that I cannot see him?†declares the LORD. “Do not I fill heaven and earth?†declares the LORD."
“But will God really dwell on earth? The heavens, even the highest heaven, cannot contain you. How much less this temple I have built!" (1 Kings 8:27)
"Great is our Lord and mighty in power; his understanding has no limit." (Psalm 147:5)
"Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom." (Isaiah 40:28)
DAVID’S DOODLINGS
HEAVENLY TRUTHS GOD HAS SHOWN ME (5 of 12)Unexpectedly given one afternoon when I wasn't feeling very well. How often God works like that! Kept my human input to a minimum.
God has shown me that...
... submission builds character.
... character outscores performance every time.
... 'to be' is infinitely better than 'to do'.
... we cannot put Him into a box, no matter how big we make it.
... sin caused man and God's thought patterns to become diametrically opposed.
... He reveals himself to us when we least expect it.

At the end of our Kenyan Conference, an old lady testified that she had never been to school and did not know English, yet during the seminar she had understood every word! The power of the Spirit was truly present, as was illustrated when praying or the pastors at the end. As each one was lightly touched, the power of God sent them straight to the floor. This is something I have never experienced with pastors before, as they are sadly, usually the most Spirit resistant group!
A truly wonderful African experience.
LAUGHING AT OURSELVES
261. ZEAL AND THE GRADUATE
A boy was sitting on a park bench with one hand resting on an open Bible. He was loudly exclaiming his praise to God. "Hallelujah! Hallelujah! God is great!" he yelled without worrying whether anyone heard him or not.
Shortly after, along came a man who had recently completed some studies at a local university. Feeling himself very enlightened in the ways of truth and very eager to show this enlightenment, he asked the boy about the source of his joy.
"Hey," asked the boy in return, "don't you have any idea what God is able to do? I just read that God opened up the waves of the Red Sea and led the whole nation of Israel right through the middle."
The enlightened man laughed lightly, sat down next to the boy and began to try to open his eyes to the "realities" of the miracles of the Bible. "That can all be very easily explained. Modern scholarship has shown that the Red Sea in that area was only 10 inches deep at that time. It was no problem for the Israelites to wade across."
The boy was stumped. His eyes wandered from the man back to the Bible laying open on his lap. The man, content that he had enlightened a poor, naive young person to the finer points of scientific insight, turned to go.
Scarcely had he taken two steps when the boy began to rejoice and praise louder than before. The man turned to ask the reason for this resumed jubilation.
"Wow!" exclaimed the boy happily, "God is greater than I thought! Not only did He lead the whole nation of Israel through the Red Sea, He topped it off by drowning the whole Egyptian army in 10 inches of water!"
260. GOD WILL PROVIDE
A young woman brings home her fiancee to meet her parents. After dinner, her mother tells her father to find out about the young man. The father invites the fiancee to his study.
"So what are your plans?" the father asks the young man.
"I am a Bible scholar," he replies.
"A Bible scholar. Hmmm," the father says. "Admirable, but what will you do to provide a nice house for my daughter to live in, as she's accustomed to?"
"I will study," the young man replies, "and God will provide for us."
"And how will you buy her a beautiful engagement ring, such as she deserves?" asks the father.
"I will concentrate on my studies," the young man replies, "God will provide for us."
"And children?" asks the father. "How will you support children?"
"Don't worry, sir, God will provide," replies the fiancee.
The conversation proceeds like this, and each time the father questions, the young idealist insists that God will provide.
Later, the mother asks, "How did it go, Honey?"
The father answers, "He has no job and no plans, but the good news is he thinks I'm God."

FACTS FOR FUN
LAST WEEKS QUESTION: What causes "bags" under the eyes?ANSWER: Puffy eyes are caused by fluid that accumulates under the eye and is trapped there. This problem is generally most severe in the morning. (Allergies and sinus problems often also make eyes puffy too.)
THIS WEEK'S QUESTION: What are snow fleas?
Answer Next Week.
SOME FUN FACTS
807. BACHELOR BOY BUCHANAN
James Buchanan was the only bachelor ever to serve as US president. (Proves that every rule has an exception.)
808. WISE WAR
The war between England and Zanzibar in 1896 lasted only 38 minutes. Zanzibar surrendered 38 minutes after England attacked. (Why haven’t we learned more from it! Or from David and Goliath.)
809. GIVE ME A HOME, WHERE THE BUFFALO ROAM…
Couldn’t have been in America, for large herds of buffalo have never roamed there. The animals we think of as ‘buffalo’ are actually ‘bison’. True buffalo, which have longer horns, roam Africa and Asia only. (Perhaps is a game of ‘Blind Man’s Buff-alo’.)

A UGANDAN EXPERIENCE
On the way from Kenya to Kampala in Uganda, my firend David and I were picked up by a man delivering a new car from the port of Mombassa in Kenya to Kampala. We had a very pleasant trip for most of the way, travelling at 100kph. Until we were stopped at a police road block.
The driver got out of the car, spoke to the police, then came back. Suddnly we took off at and travelled the rest of the way at 130-140kph, overtaking at every opportunity, and making opportunitities where none really existed!
We were hurriedly dropped off where we wanted to go and the driver took off into the sunset. By now we had realised that he had run the road block, as he wasn't meant to be carrying passengers.
About 3-4 minutes later a truck full of soldiers with blue lights flashing and siren blazing raced past. It was us they were chasing! But the car wasn well gone - and so were we.
A real 'Keystone Cops' African experience!

PETS RULE!
DOGS ARE BETTER THAN MEN!How dogs are better than men:
Dogs do not have problems expressing affection in public.
Dogs miss you when you're gone.
Dogs feel guilty when they've done something wrong.
Dogs admit when they're jealous.
Dogs are very direct about wanting to go out.
Dogs do not play games with you except fetch (and they never laugh at how you throw).
You can train a dog.
Dogs are easy to buy for.
Dogs understand what "no" means.
Dogs mean it when they kiss you.
BUT BETTER THAN A WOMAN TOO!
A dog's parents will never visit you.
A dog loves you when you leave your clothes on the floor.
A dog limits its time in the bathroom to a quick drink.
A dog never expects you to telephone.
A dog will not get mad at you if you forget its birthday.
A dog does not care about the previous dogs in your life.
A dog never expects flowers on Valentine's Day.
The later you are, the happier a dog is to see you.
A dog does not shop.

BESIDE ME
This is my very first poem, written during a really hard period in my life. For we hadlost our business and I was fighting desperately, ultimately unsuccessfully, to stave off
bankruptcy. Written in the days before I became a Christian, (it took bankruptcy to do
that – some of us are slow learners!) but I was starting to look at what really are the
important things in life. Besides, I am missing her and looking forward to her joining me in Nigeria.

A DAVID MUSING
During this trip, I have come to understand and experience more deeply the extent of the spiritual forces that are arrayed against those trying to extend God's Kingdom. I am not particularly spiritually aware, even though being really blessed by the powerful presence of the Holy Spirit when I minister. But during this trip, two expereinces, one in a meeting and one at home, have woken me up to the reality of opposing spiritual forces. So I would truly value your prayer covering over the next 6 weeks, for me, and particularly for my family at home. We all need it! May His Kingdom grow!
His servant and yours
