WHOSE CHURCH IS IT ANYWAY?

THE POST APOSTOLIC CHURCH

Again I acknowledge that much of the material that follows is drawn from the excellent publication by Eddie L. Hyatt, 2000 Years of Charismatic Christianity. For specific references to the writings quoted, please refer to that publication.

We now proceed to the 20th century which, as we all know, was noted for outpourings of the Holy Spirit. Surely all would now be transformed by the Spirit and the bride church produced. Of course, we now know the reality, where there has been greater splits and divisions than ever before. God weeps!

THE EARLY 1900'S

Now we return to the United States and pick up again the story of Charles Parnham and William Seymour.

AZUSA STREET REVIVAL (1906-9) Part 1

THE PREPARATION

In 1905, Parnham conducted a successful revival campaign in Bryan Hall, in Houston, Texas. In order to spread the Word, Parnham opened a short-term Bible school there on 1 January 1906.

WILLIAM SEYMOUR

William Seymour, a black Holiness church pastor, desired to attend. Southern racial segregation policies posed a problem which Parnham overcame by placing Seymour in an adjoining room where he was able to listen to the lectures. Although Seymour did not receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit there, he accepted it as being biblically correct.

Seymour was passionate for God.....

Before I met Parham, such a hunger to have more of God was in my heart that I prayed for five hours a day for two and a half years. I got to Los Angeles, and there the hunger was not less but more. I prayed, "God, what can I do?" The Spirit said, "Pray more." "But Lord, I am praying five hours a day now." I increased my hours of prayer to seven, and prayed on for a year and a half more. I prayed to God to give what Parham preached, the real Holy Ghost and fire with tongues with love and power of God like the apostles had.

Before the course was complete Seymour received a letter from a Los Angeles Holiness congregation to pastor them. He accepted and Parnham provided his fare.

He preached his first sermon form Acts 2:4, broaching the subject of tongues being the evidence of Holy Spirit baptism. Returning for the evening service he found the door padlock, his teaching being unacceptable to the elders.

The Asberry's took him into their home on Bonnie Brae Street where Seymour prayed constantly. One evening, while eating supper, Richard Asberry suddenly fell from his chair and began speaking in tongues. Soon others, including Seymour, followed.

As the word spread, crowds turned up and they were forced to find larger premises. An empty building was found at 312 Azusa Street, in downtown Los Angeles. Originally a Methodist Episcopal Church, it had more recently been used as a stable and warehouse. They removed the rubbish and built rough plank benches and a makeshift pulpit made from wooden shoe boxes. The first service held there was on 14 April 1906. Revival fires blazed even brighter.

PRAYER

Prayer was the foremost activity there. Seymour spent much time with his head inside the pulpit's top shoebox praying for the continual guidance and strength of the Holy Spirit.

A contemporary, John G Lake, commented.....

God had put such a hunger into that man's heart that when the fire of God came it glorified him. I do not believe any other man in modern times had a more wonderful deluge of God in his life than God gave to that dear fellow, and the glory and power of a real Pentecost swept the world. That black man preached to my congregation of ten thousand people when the glory and power of God was upon his spirit, and men shook and trembled and cried to God. God was in him.

So we can continue to say.....

THE TRUE FOLLOWERS OF JESUS ARE ONES WHO ARE OBEDIENT TO THE LEADING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IN THEIR LIVES.

FROM THE WORD

THE WORDS OF JESUS continued

The Lord has asked me to compile a publication of the words Jesus spoke, as recorded in the New Testament in chronological order. I have got about halfway, and have found it very enlightening and encouraging in my relationship with Him. The final version will have changes of layout and version used, but this is a foretaste of things to come. Of course, it is not a Bible substitute! I Hope you find it helpful too, in your walk with Jesus.

The Times Interpreted (Luke 12:54-59)
Now speaking to the crowd.

“When you see a cloud rising in the west, you immediately say, ‘a rainshower’s coming,’ and it happens. When a south wind blows, you say ‘it’s going to be hot,’ and it is. You hypocrites, how is it that you know how to rightly interpret the weather but you don’t know how to interpret the present time? Why don’t you think for yourselves and judge what’s right? As you go with your accuser to the magistrate, on the way you should be working on a settlement. Otherwise you may be dragged before the judge, and the judge hand you over to the officer, and the officer throw you into prison. I tell you, you won’t get out until you’ve paid the last penny.”

Repentance Required (Luke 13:1-5)
Jesus asked about sinful Galileans who were killed while offering sacrifices in the Temple.

“Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than any other Galileans because they suffered like this?” “No, I tell you. But unless you repent, you will all perish as well.
What about those eighteen people that were killed when the tower in Siloam fell on them? Do you think they were the worst people in the whole of Jerusalem? No, I tell you. But unless you repent, you will all perish as well.”

Parable of the Fig Tree (Luke 13:6-9)
Jesus explained more with a parable.

“Once there was man who had a fig tree planted in his vineyard. He came to look for fruit on the tree, but he didn’t find any. So he told the gardener, ‘Look, for three years I’ve been coming to look for fruit on this fig tree and I haven’t found any. Chop it down! Why should it be taking up space?’
“‘Master,’ the man replied, ‘please leave it alone for just one more year. I’ll dig the soil around it and put
down some fertilizer. If it produces fruit, then that’s fine. If not, then chop it down.’”

DAVID'S DOODLINGS

UNITY

213. United we stand, divided... God will wait upon another generation.

401. Unity in Christ is so close to God's heart but so far away from ours!

402. Why do we keep asking God for more strength, when He has already given us the answer - unity!

403. We keep looking for the unity of one world government to arise in the nations, but constantly fail to seek it in the church.

404. The Godhead is the ultimate example of how a many faceted Church is to become united as one.

996. Unity cannot be imposed from without, but needs to grow from within.

997. True unity is birthed in the Spirit, not imposed through a structure.

998. Unity develops in times of oppression. Bring on oppression Lord!

999. Satan divides, the Spirit unites. Who is winning the battle of your life?

LAUGHING AT OURSELVES

***Blessed are those who can laugh at themselves for they shall never cease to be amused***

23. THE FLIGHT TO EGYPT
A Sunday School teacher ask her class to draw a picture of their favourite Bible story.

All were beautiful, deep but understandable until she came to Johnny. For Johnny’s picture showed four people on an aeroplane.

"What’s that? she asked. "Oh, the flight to Egypt," Johnny replied.

"I see…. And that must be Mary, Joseph and the baby Jesus," she said. "But who’s the fourth person?"

"Oh, that’s Pontius – the Pilot!"

22. HEAVENLY GUIDANCE
A boy was watching his father, a pastor, write his sermon. "How do you know what to say?" he asked.

"Why, God tells me."

"Oh, then why do you keep crossing things out?"

21. FEED MY COW
One Sunday a cowboy went to church. When he entered, he saw that he and the preacher were the only ones present. The preacher asked the cowboy if he wanted him to go ahead and preach.

The cowboy said, "I'm not too smart, but if I went to feed my cattle and only one showed up, I'd feed him."

So the minister began his sermon.

One hour passed, then two hours, then two-and-a-half hours. The preacher finally finished and came down to ask the cowboy how he had liked the sermon.

The cowboy answered slowly, "Well, I'm not very smart, but if I went to feed my cattle and only one showed up, I sure wouldn't feed him ALL the hay."

FACTS FOR FUN

CORRESPONDANCE FROM LAST WEEK

Dear David,

The Book of Daniel is almost universally dated to 168 BC, during the reign of Antiochus Epiphanes. This was before the Maccabean revolt. It was intended to encourage Jews who were being persecuted during Antiochus' campaign of Hellenization. Curiously, the "additions" to Daniel (Susanna, Bel and the Dragon) are probably the oldest parts of the book, traditional stories incorporated into the apocalyptic encouragement.

Just sayin'....

Hope thee enjoys this week's basketball game!

Blessings, and thanks for thy work - Phil Anthony.

LAST WEEKS QUESTION: What did Chester Greenwood invent in 1873?

ANSWER: Chester Greenwood invented the earmuffs in 1878. He lived in Farmington Maine, USA and every year they hold a parade and winter carnival called ‘Chester Greenwood Day’. Everyone shows off his or her varied and colourful (and often silly) earmuffs. (Can make as much noise as they wish without suffering hearing loss!)

THIS WEEK'S QUESTION: Is it possible that a caterpillar could have more than 1,000 muscles?

Answer Next Week.

SOME FUN FACTS

715. SOLID AS A ROCK?
Rocks in Death Valley, California, are seen to move by themselves! One of many of nature’s mysteries, which no one can unravel. They move fair distances and leave tracks behind them in the sand. Locally, they are known as the ‘racetrack rocks.’ (One rock never moves – Jesus! But we do – often!)

716. POPULATION EXPLOSION
There are more Barbie dolls in existence than there are people in the United States! (How about in heaven?)

717. CRY NO MORE
In space, astronauts are unable to cry. Because there is no gravity, tears won’t flow. (Onion slicers heaven.)

IF ONLY I'D THOUGHT OF IT!

"""OTHER'S SAYINGS TO ENLIGHTEN, AMUSE, OR BEMUSE"""

1] Prayer is not a “spare wheel” that you pull out when in trouble, but it is a “steering wheel” that directs the right path throughout.

2] So a Car’s Wind Shield is so large & the Rear view Mirror is so small? Because our PAST is not as important as our FUTURE. So, Look Ahead and Move on.

3] Friendship is like a BOOK. It takes few seconds to burn, but it takes years to write.

4] All things in life are temporary. If going well, enjoy it, they will not last forever. If going wrong, don’t worry, they can’t last long either.

5] Old Friends are Gold! New Friends are Diamond! If you get a Diamond, don’t forget the Gold! Because to hold a Diamond, you always need a Base of Gold!

6] Often when we lose hope and think this is the end, GOD smiles from above and says, “Relax, sweetheart, it’s just a bend, not the end!

7] When GOD solves your problems, you have faith in HIS abilities; when GOD doesn’t solve your problems HE has faith in your abilities.

8] A blind person asked God : “Can there be anything worse than losing eye sight?” He replied: “Yes, losing your vision!”

9] When you pray for others, God listens to you and blesses them, and sometimes, when you are safe and happy, remember that someone has prayed for you.

10] WORRYING does not take away tomorrow’s TROUBLES, it takes away today’s PEACE.

JUST JOKES

THE PROPOSAL?
A college senior took his new girlfriend to a football game. The young couple found seats in the crowded stadium and were watching the action. A substitute was put into the game. As he was running onto the field to take his position, the boy said to his girlfriend, "Take a good look at that guy. I expect him to be our best man next year."

His girlfriend snuggled closer, replying, "That's a unique proposal – but I accept!”

BEGINNERS LUCK?
A retiree was given a set of golf clubs by his co-workers.

Thinking he'd try the game, he asked the local pro for lessons, explaining that he knew nothing whatsoever about the game.

The pro showed him the stance and swing, then said, "Just hit the ball toward the flag on the first green."

The novice teed up and smacked the ball straight down the fairway and onto the green, where it stopped just inches short of the hole.

"Now what ?" the fellow asked the speechless pro.

"Uh... you're supposed to hit the ball into the cup." the pro finally said, when he was able to speak again.

"Oh great! So now you tell me!"

RUBBED OUT
Mother: "Why are you home from school so early?"
Son: "I was the only one who could answer a question."
Mother: "Oh, really? What was the question?"
Son: "Who threw the eraser at the principal?"

John: “July 4th”
Jim: “What year?”
John: “Why, every year of course!”

Street preacher held by Police for 19 hours gets £13,000

Mon, 31 Mar 2014

A Christian street preacher who was wrongfully arrested by police and held in custody for over 19 hours has received £13,000 compensation in an out-of-court settlement.

Greater Manchester Police had accused 57-year-old John Craven of public order offences after two teenage boys approached him in September 2011 and asked what he thought of homosexuals.

Mr Craven responded by quoting the Bible’s stance on homosexuality, but said that “whilst God hates sin He loves the sinner”.

Teenagers

The teenagers then kissed in front of him and taunted him with suggestive sexual acts.

Mr Craven was arrested by Police Constable Alistair McKittrick for a public order offence, after the pair told the officer they felt insulted by Mr Craven’s comments.

He was not offered food until, after almost 15 hours, he was given a bowl of cereal and a microwave meal following a complaint to the police from his friend.

He also says he was denied access to medication for his rheumatoid arthritis.

Harassment

Mr Craven, who has been street preaching for seven years, said: “I never intended to cause anyone harassment, alarm or distress. In fact, quite the opposite. I preach the gospel which means good news and the love of God for all.

“The actions of the police have left me feeling nervous and anxious. I found the whole episode extremely distressing.”

“It appears that the actions of the police were calculated to give me and other street preachers the impression that we could not preach the gospel in public without breaking the law and if we did we would be arrested.”

Imprisonment

Mr Craven will now receive £13,000 as compensation for wrongful arrest, false imprisonment and breach of his human rights.

Under the European Convention on Human Rights people have the freedom to manifest their religion (Article 9) and freedom of expression, which includes the freedom to impart information and ideas without interference by a public authority (Article 10).

The total cost for Greater Manchester Police, including both parties’ legal bills, will be over £50,000.

Settlement

The settlement comes a few days before the case was due in court.

The Christian Institute supported Mr Craven’s case through its Legal Defence Fund.

Colin Hart, Director of The Christian Institute, said: “Nobody should face 19 hours in custody for simply answering a question about their beliefs.

Disgraceful

“The disgraceful way in which Mr Craven was treated fell well below what the public deserve. In terms of the infringement of religious liberty, it was one of the worst cases we have ever dealt with.

“Freedom of expression is a very basic human right. The very foundations of our liberty depend upon it. I hope that Greater Manchester Police learn lessons for the future from this case and make every effort to ensure that it never happens again.

“I am delighted for Mr Craven that a settlement has been reached.”

WAXING LYRICAL

Celebrating the most important event in history – the death and resurrection of Jesus.
To some it may seem like a tragedy but the reality is that it was the final victory for Jesus over sin and death, and through Him, for us too. The ultimate example of the saying, ‘No gain without pain!’ For the pain Jesus suffered that day was indescribable. He was beaten to a pulp, unrecognisable, not at all like the sanitised pictures we have
of this gentle looking man sadly looking down on his followers from the cross. He suffered the most agonising and extreme torture and death that it was possible for the Romans to inflict, and they were real experts at it.

This poem attempts, inevitably inadequately, to describe some of the events of that day, a day that had amazingly, been specifically predicted hundreds of years before it came. Indeed it was foreshadowed from the very time that it became necessary, the moment that Adam and Eve were separated from God through sin.

You may wish to use this in your Easter Service.

SEVEN TIMES SHED FOR ME

(Matthew 27:46)"Eloi, Eloi, lama sabaacthani" He cried,
My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?
On the stroke of the ninth hour he died
Rejected, cruelly nailed to the God deserted tree.
My Jesus, shedding his blood for me.

To Gethsemane he came, the holy one
(Luke 22:42) Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me;
Yet not my will, but yours be done.
For I’ll ever be obedient, until you set me free.

(Luke 22:44) Being in anguish he prayed more earnestly,
His sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.
The disciples exhausted, slept on peacefully.
Returning from his prayers, by Jesus they were found.
My Jesus, he shed his blood for me.

(Luke 22:47) While he was still speaking a crowd came up,
Included traitor Judas, with whom he did sup.
The chief priests, officers, soldiers and all,
They arrested him, for that was their call.

At the chief priests house they questioned him,
(Matthew 26:67) Spit in his face and struck him with their fists.
The cup of his blood now overflowing its rim,
Grieving eyes closing, seeing through mists.
My Jesus, again he shed his blood for me.

So Jesus, my Saviour, to Pilate was now taken,
His determination to do God’s will, never shaken.
(Matthew 27:11) "Are you the king of the Jews?" Pilate demanded,
(27:11) "Yes it is as you say". My Saviour then remanded.

(Matthew 27:23) "What crime has he committed?" The people, they were consulted.
(27:22-3) "Crucify him! Crucify him!" The rabble cried out loud.
(27:26) Then he released Barabbas to them, Pilate’s feelings most insulted,
(27:26) While he had Jesus flogged, simply to please the crowd.
A third time, my Jesus shed his blood for me.

Seven hundred years before that terrible day,
Through the prophet Isaiah my Jesus did say,
(Isaiah 50:6) "I did not hide my face from mocking and spitting",
To happen to Jesus, God’s son, was not befitting.

(Isaiah 50:6)"I offered my back to those who beat me,
My cheeks to those who pulled out my beard."
With beard gone, Oh God, how could it be,
So intense the pain, more than he had feared.
Four times, my Jesus shed his blood for me.

(Matthew (Matthew 27:27) Then the Governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium.
No peace for him there, no place to rest, was no sanatorium,
(27:28) They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him,
Preparing my Jesus to die, out on that awful limb.

(Matthew 27:29) They twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head,
(27:29) They put a staff in his right hand, for truly he was the righteous king.
They used the staff to beat the thorns in deeper and deeper instead,
(27:30) Struck him on the head again and again, making worse his suffering.
Five times, my Jesus shed his blood for me.

Under the weight of the cross, voice slurred,
(Psalm 22:15) "My strength is dried up like a potsherd,
And my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth",
Step by step weakening, as he headed south.

(Psalm 22:16) Hung on to the cross, "they pierced my hands and my feet."
(Matthew 27:33-4) At The Place of the Skull. There they offered Jesus wine to drink.
The time was coming near, with his Father again to meet.
His blood poured out, his body near death, it began to shrink.
Six times, my Jesus shed his blood for me.

(Mark 15:33) Darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour,
An ‘awe-full’, fearsome display of God’s fury and power!
(Mark 15:37) With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last,
His worldly pain, now a thing of the past.

(John 9:33) The soldiers came to Jesus and found that he was already dead,
So now there was no need to break his legs.
A lunging spear into his side, spewing forth blood so red,
All poured out, right down to the dregs.
This final time, Jesus shed all his blood for me.

Yes, seven times my Jesus shed his blood for me,
Receiving from the Father, forgiveness of all my sin.
He came to earth; he died, forever to set me free,
He opened the heavenly gates, now to welcome me in.
All because, seven times, Jesus shed his blood for me.

My thanks to Dr Derek Prince for his insights in discovering and teaching this truth.

A DAVID MUSING

A few days before we opened our new re-cherished clothing shop Chez Labelle, we had our Tuesday night group come down and pray over the building. While we were praying the Lord told me to place a cross, in LED lights on the top left hand corner of the building. This would light up at night, along with the other LED lighting we had already installed. I told the group at the time, so that I would do it! LOL!

It is now done, six weeks later! I took photos last night, but I can't seem to download any to the computer today. By next week! But it looks really good. My design and construction skills are improving!

Interestingly, the day after constructing the sign, our turnover doubled from the day before! Hope the trend continues!

Being obedient to the Lord is so easy to put to one side in our busy world. Yet it should be the first priority in our lives. Sometimes we put off things because we are busy, at other times because we don't really want to do what He has told us to do! Neither is a valid excuse.

If there is something the Lord has told you to do and you haven't done it yet, do it now. For that will please Him and give you internal peace.

PS: Got to the Basketball this week and the 'Bay Hawks' won again! A great night out with my son Brendan.

So until next week.....

MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOU BLESS GOD

His servant and yours
