EDWARD IRVING AND THE CATHOLIC APOSTOLIC CHURCH
(Continued from last week)
EVENTS IN LONDON
Quoting from Strachan, 'The Pentecostal Theology of Edward Irving'.....
Irving began to testify publicly of the events to his congregation, and he encouraged prayer meetings for the purpose of seeking spiritual gifts. As a result, almost a year later on April 31, 1831, Mrs. Cardale, the wife of a prominent London lawyer and a member of Irving's church, spoke in tongues at a home prayer meeting. Six months later, on October 30, Miss Hall spoke in tongues in the vestry of Regent Square Church. The following Sunday, several believers brought forth utterances in tongues and prophecy during the morning worship service. Needless to say, this caused no small stir.
While the majority of the congregation support Irving in his quest for spiritual gifts, inevitably several key leaders opposed him. After 3 months of spiritual manifestations, the trustees of the Regent Square Church appealed to the presbytery of the Church of Scotland to intervene. Following a trial in which he was found guilty of allowing individuals without official appointment or ordination to led public worship, Irving was locked out of his church on May 4 1832. On March 13, 1833, he was also convicted of holding heretical views of concerning the person and humanity of Christ, and excommunicated from the ministry of the Church of Scotland.
A majority of the Regent Square members joined him in forming a new congregation on Newman Street, called the Catholic Apostolic Church. In seeking to restore the gifts, ministries and power of the early church, 12'apostles' were appointed, along with Irving as 'angel' or 'pastor'. Other like minded churches linked themselves with the movement.
THE STANDING SIGN
Irving then formulated ideas on Spirit baptism as being an endowment of power subsequent to regeneration. Speaking of Spirit baptism, quoting David Dorries, "Edward Irving and the Standing Sign," .....
He also speaks of Spirit baptism "whose standing sign, if we err not, is the speaking with tongues."
Irving himself said.....
Therefore it is nothing to be doubted that tongues are a great instrument for personal edification, however mysterious it may seem to us; and they are on that account greatly to be desired. and "that they may prophesy and edify the Church when they themselves have been edified."
Classic Pentecostal doctrine 70 years before the Pentecostal movement began!
Irving's involvement with the CAC was short lived as, failing in health, he travelled on a horse, back to Glasgow in September 1834. Forming a new congregation, his health rapidly deteriorated and he died of consumption (TB) on December 7 1834, aged 42.
Larry Christenson, a Lutheran charismatic, writes.....
He was a man ahead of his time, pointing to things yet future for the great body of the Church. He was a forerunner not only of the Catholic Apostolic Church in a direct sense, but of the entire pentecostal phenomenon of the twentieth century. The things he said and did, his emphases and concerns, largely rejected in his own day, have become common place in the Pentecostal movement of our time.
CONCLUSION
Much like the first church, the Catholic Apostolic Church appointed no successors and after the last apostle died in 1901, the church, in a practical sense, ended. Interestingly, in the very same year that a group of Bible school students in Topeka, Kansas, experienced an outpouring of the Holy Spirit and spoke in tongues. The modern Pentecostal/Charismatic movement began. But, in reality, it had already been experienced by Edward Irving, 70 years earlier!
So we can continue to say.....
THE TRUE FOLLOWERS OF JESUS ARE ONES WHO ARE OBEDIENT TO THE LEADING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IN THEIR LIVES.

FROM THE WORD
THE WORDS OF JESUS continuedThe Lord has asked me to compile a publication of the words Jesus spoke, as recorded in the New Testament in chronological order. I have got about halfway, and have found it very enlightening and encouraging in my relationship with Him. The final version will have changes of layout and version used, but this is a foretaste of things to come. Of course, it is not a Bible substitute! I Hope you find it helpful too, in your walk with Jesus.
Seventy (or 72) Sent Out* (Luke 10:1-16)
Ahead of Jesus.
“The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field. 3 Go! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves. 4 Do not take a purse or bag or sandals; and do not greet anyone on the road.
5 “When you enter a house, first say, ‘Peace to this house.’ 6 If a man of peace is there, your peace will rest on him; if not, it will return to you. 7 Stay in that house, eating and drinking whatever they give you, for the worker deserves his wages. Do not move around from house to house.
8 “When you enter a town and are welcomed, eat what is set before you. 9 Heal the sick who are there and tell them, ‘The kingdom of God is near you.’ 10 But when you enter a town and are not welcomed, go into its streets and say, 11 ‘Even the dust of your town that sticks to our feet we wipe off against you. Yet be sure of this: The kingdom of God is near.’ 12 I tell you, it will be more bearable on that day for Sodom than for that town.
13 “Woe to you, Korazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. 14 But it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment than for you. 15 And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted up to the skies? No, you will go down to the depths.
16 “He who listens to you listens to me; he who rejects you rejects me; but he who rejects me rejects him who sent me.â€
Seventy (or 72) Return* (Luke 10:17-24)
With joy. Jesus praises God.
“I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. 19 I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. 20 However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.â€
“I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this was your good pleasure.
22 “All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows who the Son is except the Father, and no one knows who the Father is except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.â€
“Blessed are the eyes that see what you see. 24 For I tell you that many prophets and kings wanted to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.â€

GROWING IN GOD25. To the believer Jesus is Saviour, but to the disciple he is also Lord.
26. The stairway to great faith is climbed one step at a time. A single leap courts disaster.
27. Our most dearly held beliefs often inhibit God’s further revelation to us.
28. The foundation of our spiritual house is to be built upon the solid rock of Jesus, the walls constructed using the insights of the fathers of the faith, while the ‘roof of truth’ is God’s revelation to us today.
29. As we grow in God, what we are to do assumes greater importance, than what we are not to do.
30. A new believer focuses upon the ‘thou shalt not’s’, while a mature disciple develops the ‘thou shalt’s.’ in their life.
31. God’s word is a two-edged sword, revealing both love and judgement.
32. To believe in God is good, to hear from God is great, but to obey God reaps the ultimate reward.
33. A man’s wisdom is based upon experience, but God’s wisdom comes through revelation.

5. THE FLOCK
Three priests were having lunch in a restaurant.
One said, "You know, all summer I have been having trouble with bats in the belfry. I’ve tried everything to get rid of them - noise, spray, cats – but nothing works.
Me too, said the second. I’ve got hundreds living there too. I even had the place fumigated, but still they stay.
That’s simple, said the third. "I baptised all mine – made them members of the church….. Haven’t had a single one back since!"
4. TRUMPED!
There were two rich brothers who looked great on the outside, even attending church regularly, but whose hearts were evil.
A new, more astute pastor arrived at the church. The congregation grew and a fund raising campaign was started to extend the church.
All of a sudden, one of the brothers died. The day before the funeral the remaining brother sidled up to the pastor and gave him a cheque for the full amount needed to complete the extensions. “Just one condition,†he said. At the funeral you must say that my brother was a saint.â€
The pastor gave him his word and deposited the cheque.
The next day, at the funeral, the pastor let it all go. “He was an evil man,†he said, hard on his wife and family, corrupt in business,†and on and on. He concluded, “but, compared to his brother, he was a saint.â€
3. THE BEST INTENTIONS OF MINISTERS AND MEN…..
The noted Evangelist arrived in the city to conduct a series of crusades. At his Press Conference the day before the first meeting, he asked the reporters not to report the examples he quoted to them, as he wished to use them in his meetings.
The next day’s paper came out with a fine story on the meetings to start that very day and concluded, “The Evangelist also told a number of stories that cannot be repeated!†(One way of ensuring a good attendance! DJT)

IF ONLY I'D THOUGHT OF IT!
"""OTHER'S SAYINGS TO ENLIGHTEN, AMUSE, OR BEMUSE"""FROM ALBERT EINSTEIN continued
Albert Einstein was selected "Man of the Century" by Time Magazine for his Theory of Relativity. Here is some of his "down-to-earth" wit and wisdom:
!!!!!!! Rule #1 If you're coasting, you're going down hill.
!!!!!! Rule #2 If you're not coasting, you're not going down hill.
!!!!! To learn from your mistakes you have to admit you make them.
!!!! The cream rises to the top, but so does the scum.
!!! If you live long enough, something will kill you.
!! The more a person is confused by what you say the more they will agree with you.
! Procrastination is the root of it's own boredom.

MORE GREAT GROANERS
104. TOOTHLESSMy ten-year-old son informed us that part of his tooth had come out. We checked and, sure enough, a piece had broken off.
Trying to lighten the moment, I asked my husband, "What do you suppose the tooth fairy gives for half a tooth?"
"Nothing," he replied,
"She wants the tooth, the whole tooth, and nothing but the tooth."
105. WOOLY HUMOUR
Fleece on earth, good wool to ewe.
106. CHRISTMAS TIME
Santa's helpers are subordinate clauses.
107. REFERENCES
Read a fascinating book I just got from the Discovery Channel. "Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Centipedes".
It's good reading, but about 60% of the book is footnotes.
108. JUAN
Police are investigating the murder of Juan Gonzales.
"It looks as if he was killed with a golf gun," one detective observes.
"A golf gun?" asks his partner. "What in the world is a golf gun?"
"I don't know," the detective answers, "but it surely made a hole in Juan."

Setting the Record Straight on David Yonggi Cho
Posted: 02/27/2014 at 2:08pm | IP Logged Quote News Room
Bob Rodgers
David Yonggi Cho, pastor of Yoido Full Gospel Church in Seoul, South Korea, has been a personal friend of our family for more than 40 years. He has stayed in our home, and my father and I have served on his church growth board for a combined 38 years. Presently, I serve as president of Church Growth International of the Americas.
Because of the slant of some of the media reports, it is important certain details of the situation be made known. Not only was I present in Seoul during much of the trial, but there was also information disclosed during closed-door meetings which has not yet been made public. I want to share some of this as follows.
First, the Seoul Central District Court sentenced Cho, 78, to a three-year prison term suspended for five years. He had been indicted for allegedly causing financial losses worth more than $12 million. He was also fined $5 million. He will not have to serve prison time, but he is on probation.
Second, Cho’s son, Cho Hee-Jun, 49, was indicted for the same charges. Because he was considered a flight risk, he was immediately taken into custody following a court order after being sentenced to three years in prison.
Cho has three sons. The second and third sons are very productive and work in church-related ministries. His eldest son has been the prodigal. He has been married four times and has been involved in sexual scandals with national personalities. In addition, he has served prison time for investment scams and embezzlement. His scandalized life has been an embarrassment to his family and the church.
Twelve years ago, this son purposely defrauded the church in excess of $12 million in a stock-related scheme. Cho testified that he trusted his elders and son and didn’t check and read the thousands of pages of paperwork, which was prepared for him to sign. Because Cho relied upon the direction of his choice elders and son, he signed the papers. He never received any monies from the transaction.
Third, the presiding judge said, “The court considered that even though Pastor Cho had the final say in the church, he never took the lead in any of the crimes, including tax evasion, committed on the suggestion of the accounting firm.â€
The court also considered Cho’s life journey as a religious leader and his long-term contribution to social welfare as mitigating circumstances on his behalf. The court ruled that his son, Cho Hee-Jun, was the instigator of the crime related to the purchase of the shares of 1-Service stock.
Even though Cho established the world’s largest church, with more than 1 million members, he lives a simple life in a 1,000-square-foot church apartment. Neither does he own a car. Cho has raised and given personally to the church more than $170 million.
Dr. Bob Rodgers Sr. is pastor of Evangel World Prayer Center in Louisville, Ky.

WAXING LYRICAL
When you suffer from lack of inspiration, real rubbish comes out!NON-SENSE
My inspiration has gone,
Mind isn't switched on.
Oh dear, what shall I do,
Just haven't got a clue!
So a witty ditty I ought to write
In the hope all will be alright,
For you to entertain if not inform,
The purpose for which I was born?
But to entertain one must have a wit,
If one's not to become a total twit,
For from wit to twit is a very, very, very small jump,
A 't' for Tait or 't' for tea - just a tiny wee bump.
It's easy to write nonsense you see,
Likely send us both up the tree,
The view from the top is an amazing sight to behold,
If to climb back down to earth, we are not too old.
Well, this dribble has gone on long enough,
For I know you are made of sterner stuff.
You would not bother to waste your ink,
On verse that really is, simply stink.
Stuck in the tree,
That, you can see,
Of my own volition,
While on a mission.
Stop now!
Pow wow!
Bid you bye,
From the sky!

A DAVID MUSING
Our new store, Chez Labelle (French for 'House of the beautiful lady') opened on Friday and traded well both then and Saturday. The photo will give you an idea of what it is like. We are selling 're-cherished' (ie. used, but like new) imported Italian label clothing, collected from the Milan area, the fashion centre of Italy. It is beautiful, as is the shop. A long way from our 'op shop' origins!
See for yourself in the photo. A 'glammed up' Kathy is in the foreground. One of the consequences is that I have to get dressed up to come to work! I do that hard! LOL!
God calls you to do unexpected things! Opening another shop was the furthest thing from my mind when the Lord brought along the buyer for our 'Seekers Megamart' group of charity shops. I expected we would go to Africa to help people and minister there. Interestingly, the day we finished at seekers, the Lord took the desire away. I was at a loss. What was I to do? My heart's desire is to do His work, but primarily to be obedient to His will.
When woken up early one morning, after several weeks of waiting to find out His will, He led me in this direction. A real surprise! But He is the Lord! Our ways (no matter how well intentioned) are different to His ways. Kathy was enthusiastic too!
May we never forget this and be open to His leading at all times.
So until next week.....
MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOU BLESS GOD
His servant and yours
