WHOSE CHURCH IS IT ANYWAY?
Again I acknowledge that much of the material that follows is drawn from the excellent publication by Eddie L. Hyatt, 2000 Years of Charismatic Christianity. For specific references to the writings quoted, please refer to that publication.THE POST APOSTOLIC CHURCH
We continue looking at prominent spirit filled men who lived during the 4th to 6th centuries AD.
THE MONASTICS 325-600AD
BENEDICT (AD480-547) Sent by his parents to Rome as a teenager for a good education, Benedict of Nursia, shocked by the vice of the city, decided to live as a hermit in a cave east of Rome. Around 529, he founded the famous monastery at Monte Casino, destroyed in World War 2.
In his writing, 'The Rule of Benedict' he set the pattern for life, worship and work under the communal monastic system. It became highly influential in determining the methodology of monastic life throughout Europe during the Middle Ages.
Benedict was renowned both for his powerful prayer and for facilitating miracles. One time, a monk was raised from the dead. When building the monastery wall, it collapsed on him, killing the monk. His mangled body was brought to Benedict's room. Benedict shut the door and prayed most earnestly. Within the hour the young man revived, went out from the room back to the wall, where he continued working normally!
Benedict did not confine himself to the monastery but also ministered to the people of the area. It is quoted by Michael Walsh, in 'Butler's Lives of the Saints' (San Francisco,
CA: Harper, 1991), 212., "He cured their sick, relieved the distress and is said to have raised the dead on more than one occasion."
In his writing "Dialogues", Gregory (see his story next week) relates incidents in which Benedict cast evil spirits out of certain individuals. On one occasion, an evil spirit entered one of the monks and threw him to the ground in a violent convulsion. When Benedict saw what was happening, he struck the man on the cheek. The evil spirit immediately left and never returned.
Benedict also displayed the revelatory gifts of the Holy Spirit and was active in the gift of prophecy. He was often able to describe to his fellow monks what they had done while he had been away.
Additionally, he foretold future events, including his own death. When God forewarned him of his impending death, He told others and got his disciples to dig his grave 6 days beforehand. He died in the chapel of the monastery with his hands raised towards heaven.
So we can continue to say, even in the 6th century, that.....
THE TRUE FOLLOWERS OF JESUS ARE ONES WHO ARE OBEDIENT TO THE LEADING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IN THEIR LIVES.

FROM THE WORD
THE WORDS OF JESUS continuedThe Lord has asked me to compile a publication of the words Jesus spoke, as recorded in the New Testament in chronological order. I have got about halfway, and have found it very enlightening and encouraging in my relationship with Him. The final version will have changes of layout and version used, but this is a foretaste of things to come. Of course, it is not a Bible substitute! I Hope you find it helpful too, in your walk with Jesus.
A Family Seeks Jesus (Matthew 12:46-50, Mark 3:31-35, Luke 8:19-21)
“Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?†“Here are my mother and my brothers. “My mother and brothers are those who hear God’s word and put it into practice.â€
PARABLES BY THE LAKE (Matthew 13:1-35, Mark 4:1-34, Luke 8:4-18)
Parable of the Sower (Matthew 13:1-23)
“A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants. Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop—a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown. He who has ears, let him hear.â€
“The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them. Whoever has will be given more, and he will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken from him. This is why I speak to them in parables:
“Though seeing, they do not see;
though hearing, they do not hear or understand.
In them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah:
â€â€˜You will be ever hearing but never understanding;
you will be ever seeing but never perceiving.
For this people’s heart has become calloused;
they hardly hear with their ears,
and they have closed their eyes.
Otherwise they might see with their eyes,
hear with their ears,
understand with their hearts
and turn, and I would heal them.’
But blessed are your eyes because they see, and your ears because they hear. For I tell you the truth, many prophets and righteous men longed to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.
“Listen then to what the parable of the sower means: When anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is the seed sown along the path. The one who received the seed that fell on rocky places is the man who hears the word and at once receives it with joy. 21 But since he has no root, he lasts only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, he quickly falls away. The one who received the seed that fell among the thorns is the man who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke it, making it unfruitful. But the one who received the seed that fell on good soil is the man who hears the word and understands it. He produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.â€
Lamp on a Stand (Mark 4:21-5)
“Do you bring in a lamp to put it under a bowl or a bed? Instead, don’t you put it on its stand? For whatever is hidden is meant to be disclosed, and whatever is concealed is meant to be brought out into the open. If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear.â€
“Consider carefully what you hear,†he continued. “With the measure you use, it will be measured to you—and even more. Whoever has will be given more; whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken from him.â€

TRUTH AND KNOWLEDGE464. Knowledge is partial, truth complete.
465. Man’s truth is revealed in the world, God’s truth in the Word. One ‘l’ of a difference!
466. Understanding the truth is just one small step for God, but a giant leap for mankind.
467. Knowledge binds up, while the truth sets free.
468. Knowledge is to doubt as truth is to faith.
469. Knowledge is to be desired, faith to be sought.
470. All too often we place our faith in knowledge rather than acknowledging our true need for faith.
471. Knowledge is complex, faith and truth simple.
472. If I had full knowledge of everything, wouldn’t I be God? Fortunately I will never have to answer this question!
473. Knowledge is a golden sceptre, appearing to be so powerful and beautiful to behold, yet it can be quickly disfigured by even the smallest diamond of truth.

806. CHURCH NUMBERS
Recently while we were eating lunch after church one Sunday, my youngest son asked me what the highest number I had ever counted up to was.
I said I didn't know. Then I asked him how high he has counted.
5,372," came the prompt reply.
"Oh," I said. "Why did you stop there?"
"The sermon was over."
805. TO HAVE, OR NOT TO HAVE - A WIFE!
When the famous politician and orator William Jennings Bryan (1860-1925) was a young man, he went to the home of the father of his prospective wife to ask him for her hand in marriage. Bryan was determined to impress the father by quoting from the Bible, and he chose Proverbs 18:22: "He who finds a wife finds a good thing, And obtains favor from the LORD."
Bryan was unnerved when the father replied by quoting Paul: "So then he that giveth her in marriage doeth well; but he that giveth her not in marriage doeth better." (1 Corinthians 7:38)
Bryan, never at a loss for words, said: "Yes, but Paul had no wife and Solomon had 700. Therefore, I believe Solomon ought to be the better judge as to marriage."
804. OOPS!
Our country church may be small, but we make up for it with an active prayer ministry. On Sunday night we developed a tradition of holding a special prayer service that attracted people from all over the county
At the end of the service one night the preacher called out, "Anyone here with 'special needs' who wants to be prayed over, please come forward to the altar."
With that, a young man wearing bib overalls got in line. He appeared a bit nervous. When it was his turn, the Preacher asked, "Son, what do you want us to pray about for you?"
Rather reluctantly the young man replied, "Preacher, I need you to pray for help with my hearing."
Ready to get to work, the preacher put a finger of one hand in the young man's ear, placed his other hand on top of the boy's head, and then commenced to pray in a mighty way. He prayed and prayed and prayed. He prayed a "blue streak" for almost 15 minutes. The congregation joined in with great enthusiasm.
After winding down the prayer the preacher removed his hands, stood back and asked, "Son, how is your hearing now?"
The young man answered, "I don't know, sir. My lawyer said the judge scheduled it for next Thursday."

FACTS FOR FUN
LAST WEEKS QUESTION: Who invented Khaki military uniforms?ANSWER: The light-yellowish brown cloth, used generally for military uniforms, gets its name from the Persian word ‘khak’, meaning ‘dust’ or ‘ashes’. The word ‘khaki’ can be used to refer to the colour, the cloth, or the garment made from the cloth. Lt. Harry Burnett of the Queen's Own Corp of Guides developed the cloth in 1846. The goal was to produce a mud-coloured uniform that would camouflage English soldiers attempting to hide in dusty areas. (To help stop soldiers prematurely returning to ‘ashes to ashes and dust to dust’.)
THIS WEEK'S QUESTION: Why do we call twins who are attached to each other physically, ‘Siamese twins’?
Answer Next Week.
794. BEFORE AND AFTER LUNCH
The initials AM for morning and PM evening are based on Latin words--ante meridiem and post meridiem. ‘Ante,’ of course means ‘before’ and ‘post’ means ‘after.’ ‘Meridiem’ means ‘noon.’ (What about noon itself?)
795. TAKING ITS TIME
The giant sequoia tree, which produces millions of seeds, can take 175 to 200 years to flower. No other organism takes so long to mature sexually. (Some of us, of course, never mature!)
796. NUMBER PLEASE
Gon Yang-ling of Harbin, China, has memorised more than 15,000 telephone numbers! (And I have difficulty remembering my own.)

LIFE'S A LAUGH
62. 'MR TOUGH'On the weekend of the biggest motorcycle gathering of the year, I was bar tending at a club nearby. When the roaring machines pulled up outside, our patrons' eyes swung toward the door and conversation turned into uneasy whispering.
A group of tough looking bikers walked up to the bar, and one of them asked me where the phone was. I pointed it out, and the silence in the room let everybody overhear what the biker said into the receiver. "Hi, Mom. Just want to let you know I'll be home late tonight."
63. REAL LABELLING
My family always gives me a golf shirt as a gift. I was especially delighted with the one I received on my birthday a couple of years ago.
The care instruction label read: "Part cotton, part other stuff. When dirty, wash it."
64. IT'S IN THE BAG
Old Dr. Carver still made house calls. One afternoon he was called to the Tuttle house. Mrs. Tuttle was in terrible pain.
The doctor came out of the bedroom a minute after he'd gone in and asked Mr. Tuttle, "Do you have a hammer?"
A puzzled Mr. Tuttle went to the garage, and returned with a hammer. The doctor thanked him and went back into the bedroom.
A moment later, he came out and asked, "Do you have a chisel?"
Mr. Tuttle complied with the request.
In the next ten minutes, Dr. Carver asked for and received a pair of pliers a screwdriver and a hacksaw. The last request got to Mr. Tuttle. He asked, "What are you doing to my wife?"
"Not a thing," replied old Doc Carver. "I can't get my instrument bag open."
65. MORTIFIED
I was self-conscious about going to the gym because I thought the pounds I had put on would make me stand out among the spandex-clad regulars. I chose a treadmill in the corner so that I'd be inconspicuous.
However, as I exercised, my worst fears came true. At least a dozen people turned to stare at me periodically. I thought it might be my imagination, but then one woman even squinted to get a better look. Mortified, I stepped off the machine to leave. When I turned around, I realized that the gym's only wall clock was hung only inches above where my head had been.
Laugh at life lots here.
BIBLE TRIVIA (About The Bible)
NUTS AND BOLTSACCEPTED AT LAST
The Eastern church accepted the New Testament as we know it in AD367 with the 39th Paschel Letter of Athanasius and the Western church followed suit after Pope Damascus called a synod together in Rome in AD382.

Jesus is Shaking a Nation - Kosice, Slovakia
October 19, 2013Today, all day, we have been ministering in a CfaN Fire Conference in the city of Kosice in Slovakia. I invited two of my dear friends to join me: Todd White and Mike Dow, both have been a great blessing.
This morning after preaching about the outpouring of the Holy Spirit we formed a "Fire Tunnel" with local minters and laid hands on thousands of people! It was exhausting work, but worth every effort. So many people were dramatically filled with the Holy Spirit.
Tonight the venue, the Steel Arena, was packed! Local leaders told me that this was the largest meeting in the nation in over 20 years! I asked Todd and Mike to give their amazing testimonies of how Jesus saved them and then I preached a short Gospel message about the blood of Jesus. When I gave the altar call we almost could not believe our eyes. Thousands poured onto the arena floor until there was no more room. The front, the aisles and the back of the arena were completely FILLED with people surrendering their lives to Jesus. The very sight was enough to bring tears to my eyes.
Then I asked Todd to pray for the sick and Jesus did many wonderful miracles. A young boy, totally deaf for 4 years was healed! Another young man came to the meeting on crutches wearing a brace on his right leg because of a shattered femur bone. After prayer, all pain left and strength returned to his leg. He was overwhelmed, hardly able to believe it himself. He put the crutches down and began to walk!
There was also an elderly lady who was healed of paralysis in her arm and the list goes on and on.
We are all overwhelmed and rejoicing at what the Lord has done here today. I think one young woman said it best tonight when she said, "This is shaking our nation." Praise the Lord. Thank you for praying for us. I look forward to sending you the count of salvation cards returned once they've been tallied.
Yours in the Harvest,
Evangelist Daniel Kolenda

A DAVID MUSING
In two days time, Kathy and I will be flying to Sydney, Australia, about 2000km west of New Zealand over the Tasman Sea. Then we are going on, what for me, is a long held dream - a cruise! For we will spend 10 days and nights travelling round the beautiful Pacific Islands of Vanuatu and New Caledonia. When Kathy and I were first married (Just a few years ago! Can I remember how long!) we did what New Zealanders call an 'OE' (Overseas Experience). Because New Zealand is so isolated at the bottom of the world, we like to travel to broaden our horizons, 'to see the world'. At that time air and sea travel cost the same, so we went to the Britain by plane and returned by boat. The boat trip took 6 weeks and I loved every minute of it! And have wanted to repeat the experience!
Now, having sold Seekers we are able to make the time to do so before our next (ad)venture. It is now the beginning of the cyclone season, but we pray that that is one adventure we wont have to experience!
Of course, I have had to work hard to prepare 3 weeks worth of PGIMs and Tuesday Teachings in advance, so will be pleased when Wednesday comes.
The photo shows our cruise ship, the P & O 'Pacific Pearl'.
So until next week.....
MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOU BLESS GOD
