HEARING FROM GOD

CONCLUSION

Hearing from God, in our humanistic world, is regarded as being 'way out', to say the very least! Yet, is it?

The essence of any relationship is communication. Without communication, true relationship cannot be built. If the acceptance of Jesus into our life is to be more than an intellectual experience, there must be a two way communication between God and ourselves. Hearing brings conviction, which leads to repentance. It is life changing! Without communication, without hearing from God, a true relationship cannot be said to have been established. Sorry, but the 'sinners prayer' is not sufficient, is not biblical, but rather, a man concocted 'event'. True 'Christ'ianity is an ongoing, developing 'experience', one of a life committed to 'walking with Jesus'. This is the 'narrow gate' Jesus talks about.

The Narrow and Wide Gates

13 “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. 14 But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it. (Matthew 7;13-14)

So how do we walk with Jesus when He is not here? Through obedience to His commands and building a relationship through the Holy Spirit who lives within us. The world cannot understand this.

15 “If you love me, you will obey what I command. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. (John 14:15-17)

Sadly, all too many people who call themselves Christians do not have a personal relationship with Jesus, therefore do not hear from God. We teach people to act like Christians rather to be relational disciples of Jesus. Hear what some men, wiser than me, have said.

Bill Bright, who should know (...see Blinded By The Bright) said, "...many who call themselves Christians are not really Biblical Christians at all. Although they may be religious people who attend church regularly, they have never experienced the new birth and a personal relationship with Jesus Christ."

Dr. Rod Bell, president of the Fundamentalist Baptist Fellowship of America, believes 50% of people that go to church are lost.

Evangelist Luis Palau said of the 80% of Americans who claim to be Christian, "few live any differently from pagans or atheists, as though God has no claim on their lives."

Dr. James Dobson admitted that, "The majority of Americans are dabbling in religious expression that has no substance."

A.W. Tozer said "probably less than one out of ten evangelicals knows anything experientially about the new birth."

Our actions speak louder than our words. John the Baptist's message was to.....

8 Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. (Matthew 3:8)

While Jesus said.....

18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit.
(Matthew 7;18)

This principle was also confirmed by Paul.....

20 First to those in Damascus, then to those in Jerusalem and in all Judea, and to the Gentiles also, I preached that they should repent and turn to God and prove their repentance by their deeds. (Acts 26:20)

What does this have to do with hearing from God? Everything! For we will not be convicted to repent unless God places the conviction within us. Without repentance, without relationship, based on talking to, and more importantly, hearing from God, we will not be able to truly walk with Jesus.

I am writing this unpopular stuff because it is what God is telling me to do. I am convicted to do it! It is much easier to go with the flow and talk 'love, sweetness and light, happiness and prosperity', but that is not the true message of Jesus.

Right from the beginning of His ministry Jesus preached the message of repentance.

17 From that time on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near.” (Matthew 4:17)

If we truly do hear from God, what He says will be reflected in our actions.

20 You foolish man, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless? (James 2:20)

This series has not been a mere intellectual exercise to titillate our 'feel good' senses. Hearing from God is a foundational part of our Christian experience, to be evidenced by change in our life. No change, no salvation! It's as simple as that.

May God confirm His word to you today.

But most of the time, He talks to me through the Bible.

FROM THE WORD

John the Baptist Prepares the Way
"In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the Desert of Judea and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near.” This is he who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah: “A voice of one calling in the desert, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord,
make straight paths for him.’” John’s clothes were made of camel’s hair, and he had a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey. People went out to him from Jerusalem and all Judea and the whole region of the Jordan. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River. But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to where he was baptizing, he said to them: “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not think you can say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire. “I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me will come one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not fit to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor, gathering his wheat into the barn and burning up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”" (Matthew 3:1-12)

Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit

"“If you love me, you will obey what I command. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever— the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him.” Then Judas (not Judas Iscariot) said, “But, Lord, why do you intend to show yourself to us and not to the world?” Jesus replied, “If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. He who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me. “All this I have spoken while still with you. But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid." (John 14:15-27)

Faith and Deeds

"What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save him? Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to him, “Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead. But someone will say, “You have faith; I have deeds.”
Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by what I do. You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that—and shudder. You foolish man, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless? Was not our ancestor Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did. And the scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,” and he was called God’s friend. You see that a person is justified by what he does and not by faith alone. In the same way, was not even Rahab the prostitute considered righteous for what she did when she gave lodging to the spies and sent them off in a different direction? As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead." (James 2:14-26)

DAVID'S DOODLINGS

RELIGION, REVELATION AND GOD'S KINGDOM

1061. God reveals, while religion conceals.

1062. Religion is not a church but a mind closed to change.

1063. Revelation is from without, while the heart of religion is birthed within.

1064. Revelation sows, religion mows!

1065. Religion is not the church, but the church too easily becomes religion.

1066. Religion kills, God upskills.

1067. Religion is a gathering of like minds, God's kingdom, one of godly natures.

1068. Religion insidiously enters the church through repetition.

1069. Repetition is religion's close ally.

1070. As people we are inherently religious, for we enjoy feeling comfortable - even in our discomfort!

1071. Religion is revelation become tradition.

1072. Tradition is religion's friend, but the deadly enemy of revelation.

1073. Tradition moulds revelation into religion.

1074. Revelation revs 'Revs'!

1075. While knowledge is gained at a theological seminary, revelation comes from the father heart of God.

1215. The understanding that God's kingdom is available now is the greatest motivator of all for keen Christians.

1216. There's no need to wait. Seek God's kingdom now!

1308. Religion is based upon dependence, the kingdom, interdependence.

1309. Religion looks inwards, the kingdom, upwards and outwards.

1310. The kingdom is not centered round teaching and preaching, but rather, living out teaching and preaching.

LAUGHING AT OURSELVES

***Blessed are those who can laugh at themselves for they shall never cease to be amused***

*** "Those who can't laugh at themselves leave the job to others." ***

272. THREE WISE WOMEN
Do you know what would have happened if it had been Three Wise Women instead of Three Wise Men?
* They would have asked directions,
* arrived on time,
* helped deliver the baby,
* cleaned the stable,
* made a casserole, and,
* brought practical gifts.

271. DO YOU LIVE HERE?
Father Delany was walking home after his sermon late one night when he came upon this intoxicated tramp on the sidewalk. Wanting to help, he asked the man, "Do you live here?"
"Yesh," the man slowly replied.

"Would you like me to help you upstairs?" the father asked.

"Yesh," the man slowly sputtered.

When they got up on the second floor he asked, "Is this your floor?"

"Yesh," again the man replied.

Then Father Delany got to thinking that maybe he didn't want to face the man's irate wife because she may think he was the one who got the man drunk. So, he opened the first door he came to and shoved him through it, then went back downstairs.

But lo and behold when he went back outside, there was another Tramp lying on the sidewalk. So he asked that man "Do you live here?"

"Yesh."

"Would you like me to help you upstairs?"

"Yesh."

So he did and put him in the same door with the first Tramp. Then went back downstairs, where, to his surprise, there was another tramp.

So he started over to him. But before he got to him, the tramp staggered over to a policeman and cried, "For God's sake, offisher, protect me from thish man. He'sh been doing nothing all night long but takin' me upstairsh and throwing me down the elevator shaft!"

270. WHO ARE YOU?
A certain little girl, when asked her name, would reply, "I'm Mr. Sugarbrown's daughter."
Her mother told her this was wrong, she must say, "I'm Jane Sugarbrown."

The Pastor spoke to her in Sunday School, and said, "Aren't you Mr. Sugarbrown's daughter?"

She replied, "I thought I was, but mother says I'm not."

FACTS FOR FUN

LAST WEEKS QUESTION: What or who is the Cardinal Bird named after?

ANSWER: The bright red bird, much beloved in the United States, owes its name to the equally bright red-robed officials of the Catholic Church. The Catholic Cardinals got their name from the adjective ‘cardinal’ which means ‘important’ or ‘that on which something depends,’ from the Latin ‘cardo,’ or ‘hinge.’ They started wearing these distinctive red robes in the thirteenth century, not to be self important, but when Pope Innocent IV proposed they wear red cloaks and red hats as a symbol of their willingness to shed blood for their faith. (Would they – and we - still?)

THIS WEEK'S QUESTION: What is a ‘red dog’?

Answer Next Week.

SOME FUN FACTS

139. MODERN ALCHEMY
Gold salts are sometimes injected into muscles to relieve arthritis. (Truly a ‘golden girl’?)

140. ALL THE EIGHTS
In golf, a ‘snowman’ is a score of 8 for a hole or 88 for a round. (Even a snowman is a better golfer than me, then!)

141. LOST HERITAGE
According to one particular study, plant and animal species are becoming extinct at the rate of 17 per hour. (Can we stop the clock?)

95 THESES to the MODERN EVANGELICAL CHURCH

-by Greg Gordon.
[Founder of Sermonindex.net]

(These rang a bell with me! Maybe they will with you too. - David)

49. Run from those who preach division between races and cultures. (Jam 2:4,
Gal 3:28, Rev 5:9)

50. Run from ungodly, spasmodic movements and endless empty prophesying. (Jer
5:13; 1Cor 14:33, 1Jn 2:16)

51. Run from preachers who tell mostly stories and jokes. (Eph 5:4; Tit 1:8;
2:12)

52. Run from those that are only after money, who use one gimmick after another
to get your money. (2Pt 2:3; 2Cor 12:14; 1Cor 9:18)

53. The phrase “accept Jesus as your personal Saviour” is not found in the
Scriptures. (Rom 10:9-10; Col 1:13; Acts 26:20)

54. Evidence of true conversion does not seem important to modern day
Christians. (1Jn 2:6; 1Jn 4:17; Mt 7:20)

55. Thousands of sinners think of God as having only one attribute: Love! But
they continue in sin. (Rom 1:18; Acts 5:11; Ps 2:12)

56. “God loves you and has a wonderful plan for your life!” has hindered true
evangelism. (Rom 3:19; Acts 26:18; Phil 3:18-21)

57. A Gospel of love and grace only, without the law of God being preached.
This is a doctrine of Satan. (2Tim 4:3-4; Rom 2:4-5; 3:19)

58. There has clearly arisen a careless mixture of 20th century reasoning with
God’s revelation. (Col 2:8; Rom 1:25; Gal 1:6)

59. Decisionism and the “sinner’s prayer” has been a major cause of false
conversions in the “church”. (2Pt 2:1-2; Eph 2:4-5; 2Cor 5:17-18)

60. Many will be surprised to hear Jesus say, “I never knew you, depart from
me.” (Mt 7:22-23; 1Cor 6:9-10; Gal 5:19-21)

61. Men have taken the place of the Holy Spirit in confirming men in their
supposed salvation. (1Jn 2:3-5; 2Ths 1:8; Gal 6:12-15)

62. The doctrine of hell and eternal suffering is something little grasped by
most professing “christians”. (Mt 13:42; Jam 5:1; Ps 9:17)

63. The judgment seat of Christ is perhaps one of the most neglected topics in
the modern pulpit. (2Cor 5:10; Rom 14:10; 1Cor 3:13)

64. The second coming of Christ needs to be re-instated as the church’s general
thrust and burden. (1Jn 3:2-3; Col 3:4-6; 1Ths 4:14-17)

JUST JOKES

176. THREE ENGINEERS
There are three engineers in a car: an electrical engineer, a chemical engineer and a Microsoft engineer. Suddenly the car engine shuts off, leaving the three engineers stranded by the side of the road. All three engineers look at each other wondering what could be wrong. The electrical engineer suggests stripping down the electronics of the car and trying to trace where a fault might have occurred. The chemical engineer, not knowing much about cars, suggests that maybe the fuel is becoming emulsified and getting blocked somewhere. Then, the Microsoft engineer, not knowing much about anything, comes up with a suggestion, "Why don`t we close all the windows, get out, get back in, open the windows again, and maybe it`ll work!?" (Inexplicably it did! - David)

175. JUST IN TIME?
The scene: Alexander Graham Bell's laboratory.

An exciting new discovery is about to take place. Mr. Bell and his assistant, a man named Watson, have been hard at work on Bell's new invention to transmit sound over wires.

As Mr. Watson toiled away in the room with the receiver, he suddenly hears ... ring, ring , ring .... then....

"Good evening, sir. Are you paying too much for your long distance service?"

174. SAD STORIES?
Bill, Jim & Scott were at a convention together & were sharing a large suite on the top of a 75-story skyscraper.

After a long day of meetings, they were shocked to hear that the elevators in their hotel were broken & they would have to climb 75 flights of stairs to get to their room.

Bill said to Jim & Scott, "Let's break the monotony of this unpleasant task by concentrating on something interesting. I'll tell jokes for 25 flights, Jim can sing songs for the next 25 flights and Scott can tell sad stories for the rest of the way."

At the 26th floor, Bill stopped telling jokes & Jim began to sing. At the 51st floor Jim stopped singing & Scott began to tell sad stories.

"I will tell my saddest story first," he said. "I left the room key in the car!!!

BIBLE TRIVIA (Manners and Customs - Houses)

EARTHY HOMES.....

..... create unfamiliar challenges! Grass will likely grow on the roof (Psalm 129:6) which, being made of dirt, will often leak with heavy rain. See the proverb about the dripping being like a quarrelsome wife! (Proverbs 19:13, 27:13) Snakes often crawled in through cracks, while thieves could dig through the roof to get into the house. Amazing Dreams and Visions Coming Out of the Middle East

by Teresa Neumann, Breaking Christian News

One non-Christian woman stopped a Christian man in the street and said "You are the one!" after having seen him in a dream. She had asked Jesus, in the dream, what she should do about her dream. He had replied, "Ask this man tomorrow when you see him."

MIDDLE EAST - E3 Partners (formerly EvangeCube and Global Missions Fellowship) is a Global Partners unified ministry for church planting. Their goal is to equip believers, evangelize the lost, and establish churches.

Tom Doyle, Vice President of Church and Ministry Partnerships with E3, said the way people in the Middle East are coming to Christ is amazing. "We found that Muslim-background believers, many of them, in our informal surveys—maybe even as many as half of them—had a dream or a vision before they came to Christ. They became a 'seeker,' found a believer, heard a message on the radio, or found a Bible."

"We'll ask people as we're talking. We'll say, 'Hey, we're Christians and you're Muslims, but there's this phenomenon happening about Muslims having dreams about Jesus. Do you know anybody. Have you had one?' We have met some people who have said, 'I did have a dream about Jesus, but I didn't know what it meant.' Then we go into the Gospel."

According to a Mission Network News report, Doyle told the story of a woman in Egypt who stopped a Christian man on the street. The woman said, "You are the one!" The Christian man didn't understand what she was talking about. She told him, "[In my dream] you were walking with me and Jesus, and you had that same striped shirt on, those glasses, those pants and those shoes. Jesus was telling me He loves me and wants to have a relationship with me."

In her dream she reportedly asked Jesus, "What do I do?" In her dream Jesus told her, "Ask this man tomorrow when you see him."

WAXING LYRICAL

Back to the family! Mine wasn’t – and isn’t – perfect. But perhaps it is a lot better
than it seems when we are young! The frequent Father/Son conundrum!

GOD IS GOOD!

My Dad was a highly successful man
A Knight of the Realm was he.
His hand would be raised, "Yes, I can"
While others preferred to flee.

Loved three short words, which got on my goat!
‘God is good’ he would always say.
For a job well done - even when sick on a boat!
These three little words came into play.

Most of his life was filled with success,
As Mayor of Napier the city grew strong.
Excelled in his dealings with the press,
‘God is good’, forever his theme song.

Now I found these words so very frustrating,
Why ‘God is good’? –’Twas Dad who was reliable!
Like a scratched record, the words were grating,
For my heart, back then, was not set on the Bible.

For I had seen my Dad succeed,
He worked hard, his job to fit,
A brain and work was all you need,
‘God is good’ - not a factor in it.

So I got stuck in, all work and toil,
Never looked up, ploughed the soil,
‘God is good’, was never right for me,
Success comes, growing your own tree!

But my little tree fell to the ground,
Not a very nice time to be around.
Dad’s ‘God is good’, now struck a chord,
I ended up, giving my heart to the Lord.

So did a happy story end there?
Don’t worry, it has only now just begun!
‘God is good’, as Dad did share,
But applying it, that would be the fun!

Accept it?
Not this bit!
All beliefs?
No reliefs!
God is good?
Things go wrong!
Not so strong!
Life’s snares?
Who cares!
God is good?
On the treadmill
Always uphill!
Never win,
Back to sin!
God is good!
So frustrating!
Ever waiting!
Does He hear?
Where’s His ear?
God is Good!

What is going on? I cried,
Wouldn’t care if I died!
For your words Dad, ‘God is good’,
In you, the test of time they stood!

For at a time near the end of his life,
Things went wrong, he got into strife.
Yet, ‘God is good’ stayed on his lip,
Why wasn’t it in line with my trip?

My Dad he died, things hadn’t come right,
But he didn’t give in, to the end he did fight,
In ‘God is good’ he continued to trust,
From earth to earth, from dust to dust.

Yesterday, we took Mum to visit his grave,
Four years to the day since he died.
Simple words there, his memory they save,
But ‘God is good’ is what he cried.

Over this time I have now learned,
God’s love is given it is not earned.
Dad’s ‘God is good’, I too can trust,
As my life to Jesus, I give to adjust.

A DAVID MUSING

A week ago Kathy and I had, what for us, at least so far, has been a 'once in a lifetime' experience! We got another bed! Yes, believe it or not, we have been married for 40 years and have slept in the same bed for all that time! Truly don't make 'em now like they used to!

For me it was like parting with a bit of myself! After all, we had spent roughly 13 years of our life lying on it! By far, our most used possession.

The first night sleeping in the replacement bed we both found it difficult to sleep, but now are well used to it.

In our spiritual walk too, change is often hard to make. We get comfortable, even in the uncomfortable!

Is it time for you too, to update your 'spiritual bed'?

Until next week.......

MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOU BLESS GOD.

His servant and yours

ABOUT US

WALKING WITH JESUS MINISTRIES is a non-profit, non-denominational, Bible based ministry located in Hastings, New Zealand. A ministry dedicated to developing discipleship, fostering unity amongst God’s people to achieve the Great Commission, and in doing so, preparing for Christ’s return. It is securely based upon the foundational principles of the Apostles Creed while recognising the wide and rich diversity of beliefs amongst Christians in other areas. In accordance with the Lord’s direction, materials produced by the ministry are available, free of charge, to genuine enquirers upon request. The ministry is solely funded by donations, as the Lord provides. A list of materials available (plus some fun!) is obtainable and freely downloadable from our website
wwj.org.nz or by contacting us as follows.

Our role is to bless and encourage those in ministry while promoting co-operation and unity of direction amongst the body of Christ, as emphasised 3 times by Jesus in His longest prayer, immediately prior to His arrest and crucifixion. "… so that they may be one as we are one." (John 17:12, 21, 23-4) Our website is currently being developed to encourage your participation one with another, to share resources, and to enable you to promote events and items of interest to the body as a whole – and have a smile while doing it!
