THE POWER OF PERSECUTION

Do you know that the Chinese Church is praying for more persecution in America!

Why would that be?

The rapidly growing church in China understands the truth that the true church of Jesus is stronger, grows faster, and is more unified in times of persecution than during peace and prosperity.

I fully understand that most Western readers will think I have finally and completely, 'lost my marbles'! (Kiwi for 'brains', that is.) How could oppression and persecution be good for the church? Surely the USA and many western countries have been successfully built upon Christian foundations and simply need to return to previous godly standards in order to cure the woes of the nation? And, as a side benefit too, re-establish the waning influence of the traditional church!

In my natural mind, I too would like to see this happen. To see God's kingdom established upon the earth peacefully, for I too, enjoy all the material comforts of living in the most prosperous generation in human history. Only problem is, it simply won't happen! Jesus didn't experience it, Bible prophecy contradicts it, and so does history.

Jesus was a revolutionary in His time. Initially feted, through feeding and healing the multitudes, His popularity soon waned as He taught of the sacrifices required in order to enter the kingdom of God. Most of His followers deserted Him, for it was just 'too hard'.

The Roman government of the day too, pursued Him, seeing Him as a rabble-rouser, bent on upsetting the ordered society they were seeking to build. In the final period of His ministry, Jesus travelled widely, avoiding the Roman soldiers and Pharisees who were seeking to bring an even earlier end to His life than they finally did. Hence the reason for Jesus' cryptic comment, "Jesus replied, “Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.” (Matthew 8:20) For the 'fox' referred to Herod, the 'bird' referred to the Roman Emperor (an eagle), while Jesus was 'on the run', having nowhere to rest His head.

The first century church grew rapidly under increasing persecution. Only John of the apostles died a natural death - and the Patmos prison wouldn't have been much fun either! While the church continued to grow numerically, and in wealth, over the next 1500 years of state involvement, it died spiritually. Hence the name given to much of this period was the Dark Ages. During the ferment of the Reformation of he 16th Century onwards, persecution abounded, but the church grew rapidly in fervour and commitment. Martyrs abounded. Many of the founding fathers of the USA were those who had suffered persecution elsewhere. Unfortunately however, even with the best of intentions, a godly society cannot be legislated, for God's kingdom today is not found in the replication of Old Testament Law, or even in the US Constitution, but in people's hearts.

While the Bible predicts a great harvest in the final days, this harvest is not born out of peace, but persecution. I don't particularly like it, but that is the promise of the Word. Today, we are seeing the reality of this in China, where it is estimated that up to 10% of the population are now following Jesus. This is in a communist country where, other than for a small, state controlled church, the worship of Jesus is banned and his followers persecuted.

Persecution too, tends to bring unity. Doctrinal differences lose their importance when believers are being ridiculed, imprisoned and martyred! Nothing serves to unify people more than a common enemy unable to be defeated by a splintered opposition.

Here in New Zealand, we are currently in the middle of an election campaign. There are 3 'Christian' parties vying for the loyalty of the 5-10% of our country's Christian voters. Not a great display of unity, and a subject of ridicule! Conventional wisdom says we need, as Christians, to unite to influence the government, in order to avoid anti-Christian legislation being passed. But is this the right approach?

Maybe instead, we need to become like the Chinese Church, praying for greater persecution. For it is under persecution that a strong, vibrant, end time church will emerge, one growing in unity, preparing the way for Jesus, who is returning to claim His (singular) bride.

This is a bit radical and uncomfortable for you? Let's not forget, Jesus too, was a radical in His time, one without a place to 'rest His head'!

THE COST OF FOLLOWING JESUS
"When Jesus saw the crowd around him, he gave orders to cross to the other side of the lake. Then a teacher of the law came to him and said, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.” Jesus replied, “Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.” Another disciple said to him, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.” But Jesus told him, “Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead.”" (Matthew 8:18-22)

"Jesus left the temple and was walking away when his disciples came up to him to call his attention to its buildings. “Do you see all these things?” he asked. “I tell you the truth, not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down.” As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately. “Tell us,” they said, “when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?” Jesus answered: “Watch out that no one deceives you. For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will deceive many. You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains. “Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me. At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved. And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come. “So when you see standing in the holy place ‘the abomination that causes desolation,’ spoken of through the prophet Daniel—let the reader understand— then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. Let no one on the roof of his house go down to take anything out of the house. Let no one in the field go back to get his cloak. How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! Pray that your flight will not take place in winter or on the Sabbath. For then there will be great distress, unequaled from the beginning of the world until now—and never to be equaled again. If those days had not been cut short, no one would survive, but for the sake of the elect those days will be shortened. At that time if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or, ‘There he is!’ do not believe it. For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and miracles to deceive even the elect—if that were possible. See, I have told you ahead of time." (Matthew 24:1-25)

He produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.”" (Matthew 13:18-23)

It not because Texas is biggest that it's flag is allowed to fly at the same height as
the stars and stripes. It is because Texas was an independent REPUBLIC before it
became a state. Texas may be the biggest of the contigious 48 states, but Alaska
is a little bigger. But don't get me wrong, I am Texas proud and a 9th generation
Texan. My family was in Texas 30 years before the Alamo and Texas Independence.

There is a story that a Texan was visiting a friend in Niagara Falls, and the friend
bragged " I bet you don't have anything like this in Texas" to which the Texan
answered: "No, but we got some plumbers that could fix it".

In fact, the saline solution which is used in intravenous injections, ‘normal saline’, is 0.9% salt to water, the same salinity as seawater. Of course, seawater contains lots of other ‘trace minerals’, which are mostly also present in blood. Yes, human plasma closely resembles seawater. REAL LIFE MEDICAL HUMOUR

TECHNOLOGY
A lady came to the hospital to visit a friend. She had not been in a hospital for several years and felt very ignorant about all the new technology. A technician followed her onto the elevator, wheeling a large, intimidating looking machine with tubes and wires and dials. "Boy, would I hate to be hooked up to that thing," she said.

"So would I," replied the technician. "It's a floor-cleaning machine."

NO STAIRS
An old lady, who lived on the third floor of a boardinghouse, broke her leg. As the doctor put a cast on it, he warned her not to climb any stairs.

Several months later, the doctor took off the cast.

"Can I climb stairs now?" asked the little old lady.

"Yes," he replied.

"Thank goodness!" she said. "I'm sick and tired of shinnying up and down that drainpipe!"

AN APPLE A DAY
While visiting a friend who was in the hospital, I noticed several pretty nurses, each of whom was wearing a pin designed to look like an apple.

I asked one nurse what the pin signified.

"Nothing," she said with a smile. "It's just to keep the doctors away."

MANNERS AND CUSTOMS IN BIBLICAL LANDS

JEWISH JEWELLERY
Men did not generally wear jewellery but would have used a staff or cane with some ornamentation at the top. Certain men ware a ring on their right hand or a chain around their neck as the signet ring or seal that served as the signature of the owner.

Jewish women did not use ornaments, such as were used in elaborate braiding of the hair. But, earrings were worn by the women of Jacob's family (Genesis 35::4) and the gold earrings of the Israelite women contributed to the gold in Aaron's golden calf (Exodus 32:2). Abraham's servant carried 2 bracelets to give to Rebekah. Isaiah also lists many feminine ornaments. (Isaiah 3:18-20)

The ravages of time inflict themselves upon us all!

BODY ‘Not So’ BEAUTIFUL?

Adam and Eve, naked, did roam about,
Fine clothes, jewellery, they were without,
Forever and ever they were going to live,
Nary a thought of dressing, did they give.

Created by God, with ‘bodies beautiful,’
So perfect in form - we can only drool,
The ravages of age had no effect you see,
Their bodies designed to last - for eternity.

Yet one sad day, in the course of time,
Their thoughts with God failed to rhyme.
For they ate forbidden fruit from the tree,
Which greatly affected their longevity.

A DAVID MUSING

Last Friday we celebrated my mother's 85th birthday. At her party, I sat between my mother and my mother-in-law of 35 years. 120 years of combined input into my life. I realised how privileged I am to be able to do this. To still have both my 'mothers' and, in my mother-in-law's case, to have had just the one, for all these years! All because my wife Kathy has put up with me for all this time! And I have been blessed with a most amenable 'other mum' too. Not your 'typical' mother-in-law stereotype!

Yes, no matter whether you are young or old, family is important. As Jesus taught too. May I, may we, never forget.

WALKING WITH JESUS MINISTRIES is a non-profit, non-denominational, Bible based ministry located in Hastings, New Zealand. A ministry dedicated to developing discipleship, fostering unity amongst God’s people to achieve the Great Commission, and in doing so, preparing for Christ’s return. It is securely based upon the foundational principles of the Apostles Creed while recognising the wide and rich diversity of beliefs amongst Christians in other areas. In accordance with the Lord’s direction, materials produced by the ministry are available, free of charge, to genuine enquirers upon request. Our role is to bless and encourage those in ministry while promoting co-operation and unity of direction amongst the body of Christ, as emphasised 3 times by Jesus in His longest prayer, immediately prior to His arrest and crucifixion. "… so that they may be one as we are one."
