THINKING GREEK OR HEBREW? continues
Over the next few weeks we will be continuing our look at the differences between the Jewish (Eastern) and Greek (Western) ways of thinking, so that we can better understand the ways and teachings of Jesus. (See last week's PGIM! for the introduction)Today we look at 'numbers', that is numerals, from both an Eastern and Western context.
NUMBERS
Greek (Western)
We view numbers very simply, as a quantity. So 1 means a single measure of what it is referring to. The number 2 is a double measure and 3, a triple measure. Combined together, there would be 6 items or units of measure. It is so straightforward, that it is difficult for us to conceive that numbers could be looked at in any different way.
Eastern (Hebrew) While Hebrew thinkers also use numbers to count, their primary understanding and application of numbers is as a quality or symbol. To Westerners it is as if it is a 'secret code' but for the Jews it comes naturally.
Having knowledge of the Eastern, or what we would think of as the spiritual, meaning of the various numbers, will help deepen our understanding of Scripture.
1-----God 4 There is one body and one Spirit— just as you were called to one hope when you were called— 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism; 6 one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. (Ephesians 4:4)
2-----Witness 7 Calling the Twelve to him, he sent them out two by two and gave them authority over evil spirits. (Mark 6:7)
3-----The Godhead 40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
4-----Earth/Man 7 When the thousand years are over, Satan will be released from his prison 8 and will go out to deceive the nations in the four corners of the earth—Gog and Magog—to gather them for battle. (Revelation 20:7-8)
5-----Atonement or Grace4 They were told not to harm the grass of the earth or any plant or tree, but only those people who did not have the seal of God on their foreheads. 5 They were not given power to kill them, but only to torture them for five months. And the agony they suffered was like that of the sting of a scorpion when it strikes a man. (Revelation 9:4-5)
6-----Fallen man 14 Indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, the synagogue ruler said to the people, “There are six days for work. So come and be healed on those days, not on the Sabbath.†(Luke 13:14)
7-----Completion, Perfection, Maturity I saw in heaven another great and marvelous sign: seven angels with the seven last plagues—last, because with them God’s wrath is completed. (Revelation 15:1)
8-----New Beginnings, Resurrection28 About eight days after Jesus said this, he took Peter, John and James with him and went up onto a mountain to pray. 29 As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning. (Luke 8:28-9)
9-----Eternal perfection 26 “‘On the fifth day prepare nine bulls, two rams and fourteen male lambs a year old, all without defect. (Numbers 29:26)
10----Trial and testing 8 “Or suppose a woman has ten silver coins and loses one. Does she not light a lamp, sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it? 9 And when she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost coin.’ (Luke 15:8-9)
12----Divine government A great and wondrous sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head. (Revelation 12:1)
40----Trial and testing 2 After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. 3 The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.†(Matthew 4:2)
50----Anointing 57 “You are not yet fifty years old,†the Jews said to him, “and you have seen Abraham!†58 “I tell you the truth,†Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I am!†(John 8:57-8)
144---(12x12) New man in Christ, Ultimate government of God Then I looked, and there before me was the Lamb, standing on Mount Zion, and with him 144,000 who had his name and his Father’s name written on their foreheads. (Revelation 14:1)
200---Insufficiency 20 Achan replied, “It is true! I have sinned against the LORD, the God of Israel. This is what I have done: 21 When I saw in the plunder a beautiful robe from Babylonia, two hundred shekels of silver and a wedge of gold weighing fifty shekels, I coveted them and took them. They are hidden in the ground inside my tent, with the silver underneath.†(Joshua 7:20-21)
300---Full deliverance 14 So the king commanded that this be done. An edict was issued in Susa, and they hanged the ten sons of Haman. 15 The Jews in Susa came together on the fourteenth day of the month of Adar, and they put to death in Susa three hundred men, but they did not lay their hands on the plunder. (Esther 9:14-15)
50x6=300-Anointed man 7 The LORD said to Gideon, “With the three hundred men that lapped I will save you and give the Midianites into your hands. Let all the other men go, each to his own place.†8 So Gideon sent the rest of the Israelites to their tents but kept the three hundred, who took over the provisions and trumpets of the others. (Judges 7:7-8)
666---Man setting himself up as God 18 This calls for wisdom. If anyone has insight, let him calculate the number of the beast, for it is man’s number. His number is 666. (Revelation 13:18)
SOME SPIRITUAL IMPLICATIONS FOR TODAY
1. The understanding of the meanings placed on numbers helps increase our depth of understanding what God is saying to us in the Scriptures. These verses are but a few examples of this.
2. Witnessing in pairs is the recommended way.
3. Knowing numerical meanings adds understanding to the Book of Revelation, particularly.

DAVID'S DOODLINGS
THE BODY180. Man seeks the body beautiful, but God embraces a beautiful heart.
181. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Man sees the body, God the heart.
182. The world's finest cosmetics are produced by a beautiful heart.
183. Time ravages the body but perfects a beautiful heart.
184. In the "Beauty Stakes", 'The Body' makes the early running, but 'Beautiful Spirit' always comes through to win the race.
386. It is often said that in old age, "The spirit is willing, but the body is weak", but too often in youth, "The body is willing, but the spirit is weak." However, when you find "a young body with a willing spirit", it is indeed a powerful force for God.
387. The body - memories, memories!
388. The body performs better when lubricated by the oil of the Spirit.
389. Youth and exuberance normally drifts into age and experience. But age with experience and exuberance - now there's a winning combination!

CRANWELLS CARTOONS
THE BIRTH OF SAMUEL1 There was a certain man from Ramathaim, a Zuphite from the hill country of Ephraim, whose name was Elkanah son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite. 2 He had two wives; one was called Hannah and the other Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah had none. 3 Year after year this man went up from his town to worship and sacrifice to the LORD Almighty at Shiloh, where Hophni and Phinehas, the two sons of Eli, were priests of the LORD. 4 Whenever the day came for Elkanah to sacrifice, he would give portions of the meat to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters. 5 But to Hannah he gave a double portion because he loved her, and the LORD had closed her womb. 6 And because the LORD had closed her womb, her rival kept provoking her in order to irritate her. 7 This went on year after year. Whenever Hannah went up to the house of the LORD, her rival provoked her till she wept and would not eat. 8 Elkanah her husband would say to her, “Hannah, why are you weeping? Why don’t you eat? Why are you downhearted? Don’t I mean more to you than ten sons?†9 Once when they had finished eating and drinking in Shiloh, Hannah stood up. Now Eli the priest was sitting on a chair by the doorpost of the LORD’s temple. 10 In bitterness of soul Hannah wept much and prayed to the LORD. 11 And she made a vow, saying, “O LORD Almighty, if you will only look upon your servant’s misery and remember me, and not forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the LORD for all the days of his life, and no razor will ever be used on his head.†12 As she kept on praying to the LORD, Eli observed her mouth. 13 Hannah was praying in her heart, and her lips were moving but her voice was not heard. Eli thought she was drunk 14 and said to her, “How long will you keep on getting drunk? Get rid of your wine.†15 “Not so, my lord,†Hannah replied, “I am a woman who is deeply troubled. I have not been drinking wine or beer; I was pouring out my soul to the LORD. 16 Do not take your servant for a wicked woman; I have been praying here out of my great anguish and grief.†17 Eli answered, “Go in peace, and may the God of Israel grant you what you have asked of him.†18 She said, “May your servant find favor in your eyes.†Then she went her way and ate something, and her face was no longer downcast. 19 Early the next morning they arose and worshiped before the LORD and then went back to their home at Ramah. Elkanah lay with Hannah his wife, and the LORD remembered her. 20 So in the course of time Hannah conceived and gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel, saying, “Because I asked the LORD for him.†(1Samuel 1:1-20)

444. REVENGE
A 10-year old boy named Freddie wanted to be Joseph in the Sunday School pageant. Instead the teacher cast Freddie as the landlord. Freddie objected loudly, but to no avail.
When the pageant was presented, Mary and Joseph knocked on the door and asked Freddie if he had a room for them at the Inn.
Freddie smiled and said, "Sure -- lots of room. Come on in!"

FACTS FOR FUN
LAST WEEKS QUESTION: What is the connection of May Day to Robin Hood?ANSWER: The legendary Robin Hood is said to have died on May Day. (So he ‘may’ be well remembered!)
THIS WEEK'S QUESTION: Where did the expression ‘red herring’ originate?
Answer Next Week.
1165. MOUTHWATERING AND MUNCHIE
Q. What does "M&M" stand for?
A. Those addictive little candies are named for the two big bosses at M&M Candies in the 1940s – Victor Mars and his partner Mr. Merrie.
Q. Why were red M&Ms discontinued in the 1970s?
A. They're back now, but in the mid '70s, red M&Ms were discontinued due to fears that they contained Red Dye No. 2, a substance that is carcinogenic (cancer-causing). They never did contain the dye, but to assuage the fears of the public, the red M&Ms were simply dropped for awhile.
Q. Which colour M&M do most people prefer?
A. Surprisingly, it's the brown M&M (perhaps because it looks most like chocolate?) Market research conducted by the company that makes the candy has determined that brown is the favourite, so that's what each bag contains the most of. (Much of our ‘tastebuds’ is in our eyes!)
1166. ANYONE FOR TENNIS? AGAIN AND AGAIN AND ………
The oldest competitor to have appeared at The Championships (Wimbledon) was J.R. Borota (FRA) who was 65 years, 317 days when he played in the Gentlemen's Doubles in 1964. (‘Service’ above and beyond duty!)
1167. (3 x (30+30)) = 1,000,000,000!?
Such is the amazing progress of computer chip miniaturisation that in 1960 a single chip held 3 circuits, while 30 years later in 1990 the total was 30 million. It is estimated that in 2020, thirty years later again, the total will rise to at least 1 billion per chip. (Anyone offering to do a manual check?)

96. OOPS!A preacher was called upon to substitute for the regular minister, who had failed to reach the church because he was delayed in a snowstorm. The speaker began by explaining the meaning of substitute.
"If you break a window," he said, "and then place cardboard there instead, that is a substitute."
After the sermon, a woman who had listened intently shook hands with him and wishing to compliment him actually said, "You were no substitute. You were a real pane."
97. THE FAMILIAR
A detective who spent his entire career in plain clothes quit the police force and bought a farm.
"What kind of crops do you plan to grow?" the police chief asked the farmer-to-be.
"Carrots and potatoes," the man replied.
"Why carrots and potatoes?" asked the chief.
"Because," answered the ex-detective, . . . "I'm very fond of undercover crops."
98. IT'S NATURAL
A Polar bear walks into a bar and says to the bartender, "I'll have a gin.........................and tonic."
The Bartender says, "What's with the big pause?"
The bear answers, "I don't know. My father had them, too!"
99. IT'S IN ORDER
A man and his wife were having an argument about who should brew the coffee each morning.
The wife said, "You should do it, because you get up first, and then we don't have to wait as long to get our coffee".
The husband said, " You are in charge of the cooking around here and you should do it, because that is your job, and I can just wait for my coffee."
Wife replies, "No you should do it, and besides it is in the Bible that the man should do the coffee."
Husband replies, " I can't believe that, show me."
So she fetched the Bible, and opened the New Testament and shows him at the top of several pages, that it indeed says ..

Unimaginable Hope (How a Cairo Church took their praise and worship service to Tahrir Square)
By Dan WoodingFounder of ASSIST Ministries
CAIRO, EGYPT (ANS) -- Nearly unthinkable! Holding a worship service in Cairo's Tahrir Square would be seemingly unimaginable, especially in light of the recent violence there.
The huge crowd at the service in Tahrir Square
But, according to story sent to the ASSIST News Service by SAT-7 (http://sat7usa.org), a member of Kasr El Dobara Church, a major evangelical church near Tahrir Square, put it this way, "We have always been protected under the ceiling and between the columns of the church. The day has come for us to leave our chairs to share with those who need to understand our hope more fully."
"The idea of taking public the scheduled New Year's Eve praise and worship service at Kasr El Dobara came from consultation with leaders of the major Christian denominations and some local activists. Ultimately between 5,000 and 10,000 people joined the worship as it moved from the church into Tahrir Square," said a spokesperson for SAT-7, which describes itself as "the only Christian broadcast ministry to transmit culturally-sensitive programming in Arabic, Turkish and Farsi," adding that "the power of SAT-7's un-censorable satellite broadcasts is indisputable."
Senior Pastor, Sameh Maurice advised the congregation to proceed calmly and peacefully to the square. As the worshippers emerged from the Church, their candlelit procession was joined by those who had been participating outside the church via video screens placed nearby. By the time they reached Tahrir Square a substantial crowd from many backgrounds sang out to God asking for His comfort and love to be extended to those who suffer. One song repeated over and over stated, "You are the God of love. Please listen to our prayers. Make our country a paradise. Give those grieving back their rights. Take away fear and injustice, throw out hunger and corruption."
This communal cry to God encouraged Christians and non-Christians alike to rely more fully on God for the future of their community and country. One of the organizers of the event, who is not a Christian, shared this afterward on Facebook, "I was questioning the security of the event. We must think of everything. But, a colleague who was a representative of the church replied, 'Don't worry it'll be peaceful because we've been praying a lot for this.'"
The organizer continued, "During the event I was crying because I could feel the unity. I said to my colleague, 'You were absolutely right. This is true faith in the true God. Thank you for showing me what it is to really have faith in God.'"
"This New Year's Eve event did indeed end peacefully, but also generated hope across the region as SAT-7 broadcast the service live to millions of others who could not be there themselves. During and long after the event, which lasted from 8pm till 3am, praise, prayer and words of hope were on the lips of Egyptians - and many others across the Middle East and North Africa," added the spokesperson for SAT-7.

A REVELATION OF……. THE 3 PRIESTHOODSAs we go through this study, my desire is that we will all grasp a little of the majesty and wonder of the plan of God to reconcile you and me back to Himself, after the fall of Adam and Eve to the wiles of satan through the serpent, in the garden of Eden.
As God is pure and we are not, He can only be approached through a mediator, a priest.
This study is about the establishment and development of the priesthood from the earliest of times until today.
I trust that we will all grasp the essence and magnificence of God’s perfect plan for each one who believes back into relationship with Him.

WAXING LYRICAL
Many expect life to be easy once they come to Jesus. But His life was not easy - and we are meant to be like Him!LIFE'S ROSES AND THORNS
Life may be short,
It could be long.
Will we be caught?
Or end up strong?
Money comes,
Money goes.
We do our sums,
But no-one knows.
Healthy one day,
Sick the next.
For wellness we pray,
When ill - now vexed.
All's under control,
Now it falls apart!
We're first on a roll,
Then back to the start!
In God too, we must face this place,
For all's not smooth, in life's race.
Him we are called, ever to revere,
And in daily life, to persevere.
He hasn't promised a fine bed of roses,
Nor simple solutions, to all life poses.
For roses were created with thorns you see,
Representing life problems, for you and me.
Yet when we see the rose in triumphant bloom,
Its shining beauty overwhelming the gloom,
The thorns' pricks and scratches are all worthwhile,
Put aside, forgotten, when with pleasure we smile.
For there cannot be a rose, without the thorns,
So with trial and testing, we do lock horns.
In order to become the rose God wants us to be,
We must overcome the thorns of life, you see.
Then He will pick us, now His richest bloom,
Taking pride of place in His heavenly room.
Eternal blooms, never ever to fade,
For by His hand, we have been made.
When locking horns with our latest thorn,
Remember the rose - no, it does not mourn.
From glory to glory, we are being made,
The price of the Cross, now fully paid.

A DAVID MUSING
A report from my friend Asher Peri from India about the Holy Spirit blessing of the New Year, that I wrote about a fortnight ago.......On 31st December night we could see the mighty out powering of the Holy Spirit upon HIS people in the village fellowship. There were the manifestation of the fruit & gifts, the illiterate believers started speaking in tongues and prophesying which is quite unusual in the village congregation. Some have jumped and some have rolled on the floor that night and surprisingly it even continued on January 1st as well!
Prior to that I have been teaching about Holy Spirit for three 3 months and been encouraging them and praying that they to be filled with Holy Spirit. It’s so wonderful that our Lord has answered our prayers!
On 1st January the village congregation requested to me to conduct a Bible Study class during the week and we are having that in this New Year. It so awesome that the believers are so steadfast in their faith and every one so keen after the spiritual thing, surprisingly the believers those who occasionally attend the fellowship have become regular attendant after that the Holy Spirit have convicted them of sin, righteousness and the judgement.
My teaching to them to be filled with Holy Spirit (having been inspired the Holy Spirit) when they are filled with Holy Spirit
1) Will receive the power to witness.
2) He will be with them and in them.
3) He will bring into remembrance what’s that HE taught.
4) He will lead them into deeper truth.
5) He will enable them to pray, when they don’t know how to pray a right prayer HE will intercede in behalf of them with the words that cannot be uttered.
In conclusion I should say that the Holy Spirit has become real in the lives of the believers and could witness a great transformation in the lives of the people. In fact on Friday I wanted to send you the report, unfortunately one person has died in the community that is why I couldn’t write. I love to send a couple of pictures that are taken on my mobile phone while the believers were praying in the Sprit.
Please continue to pray for us.
Love Asher
Will show pictures next week. David
Until next week.......
MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOU BLESS GOD.
His servant and yours
