THINKING GREEK OR HEBREW? continues
We are looking at the differences between the Jewish (Eastern) and Greek (Western) ways of thinking, so that we can better understand the ways and teachings of Jesus. (See the last 31 weeks issues of PGIM!)PEACE
Greek (Western) In Western thought peace is a state of mind.
If all is going well, there is peace. If there is no war, there is peace. If the kids aren't fighting, there is peace in the home. If there is no crime, the neighborhood is at peace. And so on.
Peace and quietness go together. A monk goes into a monastery to find peace. Mum sends the kids away to have peace and quiet for a time. Yoga is seen as a way to find peace. Nirvana is peace.
Peace therefore, is related to a lack of friction, often found in a state of quietness.
Eastern (Hebrew) In Hebrew thought, 'shalom' or peace, is wholeness or completeness.
In Hebrew thought, peace is not quietness or an absence of trouble, but rather, a oneness with God. Peace is found in the submission of body, soul and spirit to the Creator, the Lord of the universe.
Jesus did not come to bring peace in a worldly sense.....
34 “Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35 For I have come to turn â€â€˜a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law— 36 a man’s enemies will be the members of his own household.’ (Matthew 10:34-6)
But He did promise peace to us.....
33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.†(John 16:33)
And again.....
27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. (John 14:27)
When Jesus sent out the 72 He told them to look for houses where there was peace. He did not mean quietness but rather, a house where there was a oneness with the Lord, knowing that these people would put them up for the time they were in that place.....
5 “When you enter a house, first say, ‘Peace to this house.’ 6 If a man of peace is there, your peace will rest on him; if not, it will return to you. 7 Stay in that house, eating and drinking whatever they give you, for the worker deserves his wages. Do not move around from house to house. (Luke 10:5-7)
Paul was able to find peace in the torment of prison and encouraged us to do the same.
As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. 2 Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. 3 Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. 4 There is one body and one Spirit— just as you were called to one hope when you were called— 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism; 6 one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. (Ephesians 4:1-6)
We can therefore experience the true peace of Jesus at all times, when we fully submit our lives to Him.....
36 You know the message God sent to the people of Israel, telling the good news of peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all. (Acts 10:36)
SOME SPIRITUAL IMPLICATIONS FOR TODAY
1. True peace is obtained through a submissive relationship to God, not as an emotional experience or state.
2. True peace can be found in the midst of tumult and torment.
3. True peace is a lifestyle, not a feeling.
(To be continued next week.)

FROM THE WORD
"“Be on your guard against men; they will hand you over to the local councils and flog you in their synagogues. On my account you will be brought before governors and kings as witnesses to them and to the Gentiles. But when they arrest you, do not worry about what to say or how to say it. At that time you will be given what to say, for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you. “Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; children will rebel against their parents and have them put to death. All men will hate you because of me, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved. When you are persecuted in one place, flee to another. I tell you the truth, you will not finish going through the cities of Israel before the Son of Man comes. “A student is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master. It is enough for the student to be like his teacher, and the servant like his master. If the head of the house has been called Beelzebub, how much more the members of his household! “So do not be afraid of them. There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known. What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight; what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the roofs. Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell. Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. “Whoever acknowledges me before men, I will also acknowledge him before my Father in heaven. But whoever disowns me before men, I will disown him before my Father in heaven. “Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to turn â€â€˜a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law— a man’s enemies will be the members of his own household.’ “Anyone who loves his father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; and anyone who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it." (Matthew 10:17-39)Jesus Sends Out the Seventy-two
"After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them two by two ahead of him to every town and place where he was about to go. He told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field. Go! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves. Do not take a purse or bag or sandals; and do not greet anyone on the road. “When you enter a house, first say, ‘Peace to this house.’ If a man of peace is there, your peace will rest on him; if not, it will return to you. Stay in that house, eating and drinking whatever they give you, for the worker deserves his wages. Do not move around from house to house. “When you enter a town and are welcomed, eat what is set before you. Heal the sick who are there and tell them, ‘The kingdom of God is near you.’ But when you enter a town and are not welcomed, go into its streets and say, ‘Even the dust of your town that sticks to our feet we wipe off against you. Yet be sure of this: The kingdom of God is near.’ I tell you, it will be more bearable on that day for Sodom than for that town. “Woe to you, Korazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. But it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment than for you. And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted up to the skies? No, you will go down to the depths. “He who listens to you listens to me; he who rejects you rejects me; but he who rejects me rejects him who sent me.â€" (Luke 10:1-16)
Unity in the Body of Christ
"As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit— just as you were called to one hope when you were called— one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. But to each one of us grace has been given as Christ apportioned it. This is why it says: “When he ascended on high, he led captives in his train and gave gifts to men.†(What does “he ascended†mean except that he also descended to the lower, earthly regions? He who descended is the very one who ascended higher than all the heavens, in order to fill the whole universe.) It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming. Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ. From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work." (Ephesians 4:1-16)

LAUGHING AT OURSELVES
***Blessed are those who can laugh at themselves for they shall never cease to be amused****** "Those who can't laugh at themselves leave the job to others." ***
533. LEFT HANDED
The story told of a little girl and her mom discussing the morning Sunday school class. The child told her mom that they talked about Jesus is going up to heaven, and that He is now sitting beside God. As they continued to look at the Sunday school paper, the mother noticed a picture of a rainbow. She said, "Look at that beautiful rainbow that God pointed for us!" The little girl replied, "And just think, Mommy, God did it all with His left hand." The mother replied, "What do you mean? Can’t God use both His hands?" The girl stated, "Of course not, Mom, my Sunday school teacher said that Jesus is sitting on His right hand."
532. THE PENSIVE PARROT
One day an elderly priest confides in his parishioners that he's feeling a bit lonely and depressed. So one of the parishioners suggests to the priest that he buy a pet. Thinking this a grand idea, the priest hurries into town and after much deliberation, buys a parrot.
Unfortunately not five minutes after arriving home, the parrot starts hurling a string of expletives at the priest.
After about an hour it gets to be too much, so the priest walks up to the parrot, slaps him on the beak, and yells, "QUIT IT!" But this just makes the parrot madder and he starts swearing at the priest in even more colourful language.
Finally the priest has had it and says, "All right, that's it. Grabbing a blanket, the priest throws it over the parrot's cage and screams, "Now, SHUT UP!" Well, this really irritates the parrot and he starts clawing and scratching at the bars of his cage. Finally the priest removes the blanket. Immediately the parrot starts right in on the priest again.
By this time, the priest is so infuriated that he grabs the parrot by the throat and throws him into the freezer. Well, the parrot starts swearing and thrashing about so loudly that the priest is considering killing the bird. Just as he's thinking this, it gets very...very quiet.
At first the priest just stares at the refrigerator, but then he starts to think that the parrot might be seriously injured. He becomes so worried that he runs over to the refrigerator and throws open the freezer door.
The parrot climbs out of the freezer, flaps the ice off his wings, and says, "Awfully sorry about the trouble I've caused you father. In the future, I'll do my best to improve my vocabulary."
The priest is astounded. He can't believe the sudden transformation that has come over the parrot. Finally the parrot turns to the priest and says, "Um.... by the way father, what did the chicken do?"
531. THE REAL OIL
This man and lady couldn't have any children, so they went to the pastor and asked for prayer.
The pastor prayed for them and annointed them with oil.
Sure enough about 9 months later they had triplet babies. The couple once again showed up at the pastor's study and as soon as the woman saw the pastor she ran up to him, threw her arms around him and gave him the biggest hug. "What was that all about?" he asked.
She replied "I'm just glad you used three in one oil and not WD40."

982. MINUTE REIGN
King Louis XIX ruled France for a total of fifteen minutes. (All good things come to an end – some more quickly than others!)
983. A WOODEN CANVAS
Leonardo Da Vinci painted the Mona Lisa on a simple piece of pinewood in 1506. (But not a wooden smile!)
984. ‘TOMATO-LESS’ KETCHUP
The Chinese invented ke-tsiap - a concoction of pickled fish and spices (but no tomatoes) - in the 1690s. By the early 1700s, its popularity had spread to Malaysia, where British explorers first encountered it, and by 1740 the sauce - renamed ketchup - was an English staple. However, it wasn't until the 1790s that New England colonists first mixed tomatoes into the sauce. Until then, it was widely believed that tomatoes (a close relative of the toxic belladonna and nightshade plants) were poisonous. (Wonder what colour it was before the tomatoes were added?)

LIFE'S A LAUGH
5. A NATURAL POSEIt was graduation day and Mom was trying to take a picture of their son in a cap and gown, posed with his father.
"Let's try to make this look natural," she said. "Junior, put your arm around your dad's shoulder."
The father answered, "If you want it to look natural, why not have him put his hand on my wallet?"
6. FOOT COVER RULES
Visiting our son during his freshman year, we were shocked by the mess in his room: clothes, books, and rubbish lay everywhere.
Later, over dinner, we tried to touch on the informal versus formal dress codes that life after college might require. Our son, however, shared his own firmly held dress code guidelines:
1. Informal: socks not required
2. Semiformal: two socks required
3. Formal: both socks must match
7. EVER HELPFUL
One day my brother-in-law noticed an elderly lady slowly pushing a cart through the supermarket parking lot.
Ever courteous, he insisted on taking it over for her.
The woman struggled alongside, doing her best to keep up.
At the entrance, he said, "Here you go, Ma'am," and gave her the cart.
Catching her breath, she said, "Thank you, but I was using it to lean on."
8. SHOOT ONE - SHOOT 'EM ALL!
Being a newspaper photographer, my husband would often get home late with the excuse "I had to shoot a car wreck," or "I had to shoot a football game."
Once, some unexpected company dropped by and asked how late my husband would be. "I don't know," I replied, not intending to shock them. "He has to shoot the governor."

Defense of Marriage Summit Unites Denominations
8/20/2012Charisma News Staff
Traditional marriage defenders from various flows in the body of Christ are gathering in Orlando, Fla., on Wednesday to make their voice heard.
Led by Bishop Harry Jackson, senior pastor of Hope Christian Church in Washington, D.C., the High Impact Leadership Coalition is launching a national initiative focused on the preservation of traditional marriage, as well as other pro-family issues, at the Defense of Marriage Summit.
Beyond ministers, local elected officials and community leaders have also committed to participate in the event to discuss state-specific social issues.
"This election presents unprecedented challenges to the most important social institution—marriage. President Obama has made it clear through numerous actions and statements that he believes the definition of marriage is 'evolving,'" said Jackson.
"Yet, for those of us who stand on the unchanging truth of God's Word, there is only one definition—one man and one woman. The only successful future for America must include God's definition of marriage. For those of us of faith, we must not sit silently by as the president refuses to enforce the Defense of Marriage Act."
Known for his years of pro-family work on Capitol Hill, Jackson has extended an invitation to the entire Orlando community to attend the Aug. 22 Defense of Marriage Summit. As he sees it, the fight for marriage brings together a multi-ethnic and broad coalition of evangelical denominations. The Orlando summit is the first of seven events across the nation as part of the Traditional Marriage tour.
In all, the Defense of Marriage Summit will include a day of events, beginning with a private strategy session for Florida pastors, community leaders and elected officials. A pre-event rally will begin at 5 p.m. featuring Christian entertainer Judy Jacobs, followed by the main portion of the program at 6 p.m. at the Church on the Living on the Edge in Longwood, Fla., outside Orlando.
Dr. Alveda King, American Christian minister, pro-life activist and author; Gen. Jerry Boykin, original member of the U.S. Army's Delta Force, author and ordained minister; Mat Staver, chairman and dean of Liberty Counsel; U.S. Rep. Sandy Adams, Florida's 24th congressional district; and James Robison, founder and president of LIFE Outreach International and the host of LIFE Today are also in the speaking line-up.

A REVELATION OF……. THE 3 PRIESTHOODSAs we go through this study, my desire is that we will all grasp a little of the majesty and wonder of the plan of God to reconcile you and me back to Himself, after the fall of Adam and Eve to the wiles of satan through the serpent, in the garden of Eden.
As God is pure and we are not, He can only be approached through a mediator, a priest.
This study is about the establishment and development of the priesthood from the earliest of times until today.
I trust that we will all grasp the essence and magnificence of God’s perfect plan for each one who believes back into relationship with Him.

WAXING LYRICAL
Busyness and creativity are not good bedmates. But I tried!CREATIVE!
Would like to write a poem
to express my creative side,
But first you need to 'knowem'
To be imaginative inside.
But that is just a struggle,
as with busyness I juggle.
So this offering will be very short,
Even though I have lot's to report.
Maybe next week I will have more time,
Time for the jingling bells to chime.
But then again, the weeks may be two,
Slipping both feet into a single shoe.
Or maybe three, or even four,
as we open, our new store,
Enough of this trash,
Now I must dash!
See you again soon,
Is what I croon,
Goodbye for now,
Don't be sour,
Still can smile,
Go extra mile.
Do wend,
The end!

We are really busy setting up our new Napier shop which is to open on Saturday, so this will be short! We have had a much longer time than normal to get this shop ready, and have done well in our preparations. But, inevitably, there is always much to be 'at the last minute'. For us there certainly will be as we are only going to be closed for 1 day this week! On Thursday night and Friday we have to transfer all our current shop stock to the new premises! This is a huge job! Over 10,000 items of stock and shelving etc., to be moved! Many people make light work! Praying for fine weather!
Will let you know how we got on next week!
Until then.......
MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOU BLESS GOD.
His servant and yours
